Edison: AM/FM Listening Remains Steady In Older Cars; SiriusXM Listening Rising In Newer Models

THE MOUTH, MARCH 28TH, 2024 - In Edison's latest Insights, they pointed to its 2024 Share of Ear which was able to pinpoint the moment when daily time spent with on-demand audio passed time spent with linear audio overall in the U.S. In fact – on demand had passed linear in every location years earlier – with the exception of one popular listening location: the car. The car has proven to be a different animal when it comes to audio consumption.

Share of Ear also collects data on the model year car of the primary vehicle of listeners, which has revealed something fascinating about in-car linear listening. We discussed in a report last year that the newer the car, the more likely the listener to consume SiriusXM satellite radio. The graph above shows that among those with 2020 or newer model year cars, 22% of their daily in-car listening time is spent with SiriusXM, compared with only 4% of daily in-car time spent with SirusXM by those with cars from model years 2009 and older.

Newer cars have newer hardware, and people who buy newer cars can afford subscription services. But that’s not the beauty of this graph. For ALL model year cars, the time spent with “radio” is essentially the same – 74-75% of the total daily in-car audio time. Add the percentage of time spent with AM/FM radio to the time spent with satellite radio in-car, and it’s almost identical regardless of the age of the vehicle. Which means that the same amount of time is spent with linear audio options in the newest of cars as the oldest of cars, just through different distribution mechanisms.

AM/FM radio dominates time spent with audio in older vehicles, and still accounts for over half of all time spent with audio (52%) in-car, but you can easily see SXM’s strength in newer cars. On-demand listening is growing in the in-car environment, albeit slowly. For most people at most times, driving and 'radio' seem to just go together. S

THE MOUTH, MARCH 26, 2024 - ICYMI, Kevin Rolston of WRMF-FM's top-rated KVJ show has been named the 2024 recipient of Morning Show Boot Camp's (MSBC) prestigious 'Kidd Kraddick Award'. Kevin is joined on-air by co-hosts Virginia Sinicki and Jason Pennington (shown L-R). Named in honor of the late Kidd Kraddick, the annual award recognizes those of unparalleled success, inimitable style and authenticity. exemplary service to their community and serving as a constant source of inspiration to other shows and personalities.

dTraditionally, each year's recipient is charged with selecting the following year's honoree. Last year's recipient, Dave Ryan (R) of iHeart's KDWB-FM Minneapolis, said in selecting Rolston, "The responsibility of choosing the next Kidd Kraddick Award winner is the hardest part of winning this award. So many amazing radio people went through my head like characters on a slot machine! But I owed Kevin for helping me hide that body at Boot Camp 2014 so I knew he was the one."

Ryan adds, "Seriously, Kevin is amazing on two important fronts. Of course he's an incredible radio talent. His content is different and fun and innovative and absolutely compelling. He never plays it safe and it pays off. On top of dthat, he's a visionary. He sees where the industry is going and how to get his show on that same path. If you want to know where to point your show in 2024, follow Kevin. He gets it. I get such a kick out of knowing I had anything to do with Kevin's career and I'm honored to pass this award on to that college student that used to listen to my show back in the day."

On being named as this year's recipient Kevin says, "There isn't an honor I would cherish more. I believe Kidd Kraddick was the most gifted person to ever crack a microphone in our industry. Everyone to have received his award is an industry giant. I don't feel worthy, but I'm not gonna turn this down either! And to receive this award from Dave Ryan is such a cool full-circle moment for me."

"Dave Ryan is the sole reason I'm even in radio in the first place," Kevin added, "Hearing him on the Morning Zoo at WNCI in Columbus as a young impressionable kid at Ohio University who couldn't pick a career path, inspired me and gave me the idea that maybe I could do this too. I wanted to be him so bad. Kind of weird where life takes you."

Past honorees include Bert Weiss of the syndicated 'The Bert Show,' The YEA Network Syndicated 'The Kidd Kraddick Show, The Ace & TJ Show, 97X Quad Cities' Dwyer & Michaels Show, Big 105.9 Miami's Paul Castronovo, BJ Shea, co-host of The BJ & Sarah Mornings on KZOK-FM Seattle, The Roula & Ryan Show, on KRBE-FM Houston, Brother Wease Radio 95.1 Rochester, Mojo of Channel 955 Detroit's Mojo in the Morning and, of course, Dave Ryan.

Radio Hosts Put Regular Programming On Hold To Cover Bridge Crash; To Console Listeners

THE MOUTH, MARCH 27TH, 2024 - As local news/talk radio stations in the Baltimore and surrounding areas keep its listeners continually updated on the latest developments of the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse, other music-oriented stations were quick to put their regular programming on hold and open up their phones to listeners. Among them included The Kramer & Jess Show on Mix 106.5. Steve Kramer tells Jockline, "We turned our show over to the feelings of the situation. Early in the morning, we didn’t have a lot of details yet as it had just happened. So we gave whatever facts we could give, but mostly turned the show over to the listeners to get their feelings out about it. It was a scary morning and we just wanted to try to be the warm hug the city needed."

Co-host Jessica Dutra added, "Yesterday was one of the most difficult days I’ve had in my career so far. There’s no right answer, or way of knowing what people need or want. You just have to take a chance and put radio aside, and lead with your heart. Waking up yesterday morning I was devastated, heartbroken and terrified. I couldn’t think of anything else. ... Spouses of the first responders listen to our show, and they’re scared." Jessica added, "Today Is uncomfortable". Everyone deals with grief differently. Some people just want to move on, while others need to talk things through. Kramer and myself are the kind of people that need to talk things through. We wouldn’t be authentic if we ignored the aftermath. For those who are tired of hearing about it, we’re not the show for you this morning. And that’s OKAY. We’re doing our best to try and balance keeping listeners informed - both on the air and on social media - see example here

SiriusXM's Phlash Phelps had a conversation with fellow SiriusXM host Pat St. John about the tragedy on SiriusXM's Ch 73 60's Gold. Phelps, who has crossed the Francis Scott Key Bridge countless times, says, "Like everybody, he was stunned but this unspeakable catastrophe is at the harbor entrance of his home town.  He got the call very early yesterday morning from friend Mike Seidel of The Weather Channel while traveling in east Tennessee.  He was scheduled to cross that bridge on his way back home later yesterday afternoon.  Phelps said "this is going to be a real test of our country's best engineers!"  Listen to Audio here

Art Vuolo tells Jockline, Local TV did wall-to-wall coverage, pre-empting ALL network shows.  News-Talk WBAL-AM 1090/FM 101.5 had the big advantage of having WBAL-TV NBC Channel 11 in the same building and access to the markets only news helicopter.  Photo/YouTube: NTSB B-Roll

Edison: 'Crime Junkie' Tops List Of Podcast With Largest Weekly Reach Of Women Listeners

THE MOUTH, MARCH 21ST, 2024 - In Edison's latest Insights, they point to The Infinite Dial 2023 which shows that 27% of women in the U.S. age 12+ have listened to a podcast in the last week. The list below ranks the Top 10 Podcasts in the U.S. based on the number of women weekly podcast listeners for Q4 2023 from Edison Podcast Metrics.

The podcast with the largest weekly reach of women weekly podcast listeners age 13+ in the U.S. is the true crime podcast 'Crime Junkie' hosted by Ashley Flowers with Brit Prawat, and launched in December of 2017. Crime Junkie consistently ranks at the top of the podcast charts quarter after quarter, and currently sits at the #2 spot among all weekly podcast listeners in the U.S. The Joe Rogan Experience, the top podcast in the U.S. overall, is #2 among U.S. women, and true crime pod Dateline NBC ranks #3.

Podcasts with women hosts take five of the top 10 spots, including Crime Junkie, The Daily with Michael Barbaro and Sabrina Tavernise, 'Call Her Daddy' with Alex Cooper, 'Morbid' with Alaina Urquhart and Ash Kelley, and 'My Favorite Murder' with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. And Dateline NBC’s 20-year veteran Andrea Canning is part of the team of correspondents on the true crime pod. All of these podcasts also have tremendous reach with the overall podcast audience, as seen in our most recent Top 50 Podcasts in the U.S. for Q4 2023.

The true crime genre accounts for four of the top 10 podcasts among U.S. women, with three of those podcasts having women hosts. The sports-focused and NFL player-hosted 'New Heights' with Jason and Travis Kelce would seem to be an unusual contender for the women’s top 10 list but its place in the women's ranking is notably attributed to the influence of Taylor Swift and the loyalty of her primarily female fanbase of Swifties. Our data shows how the “Taylor Swift effect” caused a massive increase in listeners and a shift to a female demographic. This is a prime example of how women can significantly shape the trajectory of podcasts, even in male-dominated genres like sports.

Women within the podcasting industry have influence not only as creators, but also as active listeners who drive engagement across content categories.

[WATCH] Kansas Host Pops The Question To His Girlfriend Live On The Air

THE MOUTH, MARCH 20TH, 2024 - James Copeland Operations Manager, KGGF-AM in Coffeyville, KS says," One of the perils of dating someone in broadcasting is the risk of an on-air proposal. This opportunity was too good to pass up for Matt Jordan, afternoon news director and sports broadcaster at KGGF-AM in Coffeyville. On Saturday, March 16th, Jordan popped the question to his girlfriend Gracen Post live on the air. The good news is, she said yes - and it made for some great radio.

Jordan took advantage of the station’s live Saturday programming schedule to pull off the proposal. KGGF’s longtime call-in buy/sell/trade show, Open Line, which airs Monday through Saturday. Under the complicated guise of “dropping off some equipment for a baseball game” before “heading to Tulsa” for a date, Jordan swung by the studio with Post in tow, and both were beckoned on the air by Open Line host James Copeland. Listeners had already been tipped off to the proposal the previous hour. After she said yes, and with family looking on from the other side of the glass, callers flooded the lines with messages of congratulations, including station owners Kevin and Dorea Potter and son Kaleb.

Dorea said, “After 42 years of owning broadcast stations, we’ve never had a proposal on the air before.” Jordan looks forward to continuing his work at the station and serving as a newly-elected member of the local school board. Post will soon be moving to Coffeyville from her current home in Claremore, Oklahoma. Watch Here

SNAPS: Anna Zapotosky, Co-Host of 'The Anna and Raven Show,' Subject of TODAY.com Feature

s

Anna Zapotosky co-host of the Nationally Syndicated Anna and Raven Show has her finger on the pulse of the issues that Mother’s care about most. Like “How Come Dads Don’t Have To Carry Anything?” To spot a mom, just look for a human pack mule. “That’s how you know,” Anna Zapotosky tells TODAY.com. Zapotosky, who shares two kids with her husband, Paul, recently posted a rant about the weight of motherhood — and she wasn’t talking about the mental load. “How come dads don’t have to carry anything?” Zapotosky, 43, asked. “You ever notice how you walk out of your house — you have 7,000 things on top of you, and your husband walks out and he’s got his wallet and his keys?”

Zapotosky filmed the clip while juggling a variety of items, including, two backpacks, a cold cup of coffee, garbage from the backseat of her car that “accumulated somehow in the last 45 minutes,” and a pair of Converse sneakers. “And you know what? I still have like seven more things to bring in,” Zapotosky said. “But my husband will walk in without a single thing in his hands.”

Zapotosky is glad she gave people a good laugh. “When is the last time you saw a mom walking around without water bottles and snacks? It’s like we’re ready to fuel an entire soccer team for two weeks,” she tells TODAY.com. My husband is the best,” she continues. “But sometimes I’m like, ‘Where is the emergency food? What if you get stuck in traffic? But somehow dads survive.” Read Today Story Here

Jacobs Media To Present Webinar That Examines 29,000 Radio Listeners About Coming Election

S

THE MOUTH, MARCH 14TH, 2024 - On the heels of the release of Nielsen’s new report, “Optimizing Political Campaigns To Win In November,” Jacobs Media has released initial results from its 2024 Techsurvey report, providing radio broadcasters with a road map to utilize when generating political advertising dollars. In this study conducted during January and February of this year, more than 29,000 core radio fans from the U.S. responded to the world’s largest online radio survey. As Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs noted, “While Techsurvey 2024 results won’t be widely released until next month, the importance of this data for radio stations today is obvious.

Key findings include: 1. Radio listeners will be following the 2024 Presidential election very closely. In fact, more than eight in ten broadcast radio fans say they’ll be very closely following the race to the White House, especially males and progressively older radio listeners. Those likely to focus on the election this year are especially apt to be partisans of News/Talk, Triple A, and Sports Radio stations. More than nine in ten say they will be “very” or “somewhat closely” following the political goings-on.

In comparing the 2020 data to this new survey, we see a 2-point shift between Democrats (up) versus their Republican counterparts (down). Independents have also seen their ranks grow by 2%, while those without a stated party preference comprise nearly three in ten respondents.

By age, Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to classify themselves as Democrats, while radio fans who fall in the Gen X, Boomer, and Greatest Generation groups lean Republican.

Jacobs Media will schedule an all-industry webinar to share Techsurvey 2024 results in April. For more information, contact Fred Jacobs at Fred@jacobsmedia.com or Paul Jacobs at Paul@jacobsmedia.com.

BIA Updates U.S. Local Advertising Estimate For 2024 To $172 Billion; 9.3 Percent Rise From 2023

THE MOUTH, MARCH 13TH, 2024 - In its update to the 2024 U.S. Local Advertising Forecast, BIA Advisory Services estimates revenues across all media in the U.S. will reach $172 billion in 2024, an increase of 9.3 percent over 2023. The rise will be driven by local political and other key local vertical ad spend, and significant ad growth for connected TV/over-the-top (CTV/OTT), TV OTA, and TV Digital. The forecast reflects a reduction of 2.0 percent from BIA’s October 2023 estimate.

“As expected, local political advertising will be substantial this year, and it’s fueling spend across the media landscape,” said Nicole Ovadia, VP of Forecasting & Analysis, BIA Advisory Services. “Our slight adjustment down for this year is mainly due to mixed economic signals, a slowdown in certain consumer purchases, and lower than expected spending in Digital and Direct Mail advertising at the end of 2023 that may flow into this year. However, we still anticipate 2024 to be better for local advertising than 2023 and certain media like TV OTA, TV Digital, and CTV/OTT are growing substantially.”

The 2024 forecast update shows a small increase in expectations for local political advertising. BIA estimates $11.1 billion in spending this year, up 15.5 percent from 2020. Local television will continue to get the largest share of the spending, with forecasted increases in local political advertising going to CTV/OTT. The split between traditional and digital advertising shows that digital has a slightly smaller share, 48.7 percent, of the overall advertising spend at $84 billion.

Key vertical takeaways from the forecast include: • Top three fastest-growing verticals year-over-year: o Political (+1975.2 percent) o Real Estate (+12.5 percent) o Leisure and Recreation (+4.7%) • Key local business verticals declining year-over-year: o Health (-3.3%) o General Services (-2.5%) o Automotive (-1.0%) “Beyond political, one category to also watch is real estate, as there’s been so much pressure around home prices and interest rates,” said Ovadia.

'Alice’s Attic With Alice Cooper' Picks Up Nights In Chicago & Detroit

THE MOUTH, MARCH 13TH, 2024 - Superadio Networks and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Alice Cooper are proud to announce seven new affiliates of "Alice's Attic with Alice Cooper," including WDRV-FM Chicago and WCSX-FM in the rock legend's hometown of Detroit.

Keith Hastings, Brand & Content Director, WDRV-FM says "We're in the business of creating great content to wrap around great music, so it makes great sense to have one of rock's greatest creators grab a mic and share his stories. Alice Cooper does rock radio like few of his peers can, with a twisted sense of humor and the intrigue of a classic rock musician. Superadio makes it easy to bring the well produced and compelling show "Alice's Attic" to your station and raise the game for the entire market."

Scott Jameson, WCSX-FM, Vice President National Content, Beasley Media Group, says “Alice Cooper takes listeners behind the velvet rope for interesting anecdotes about our rock heroes bringing the songs we love to life. Sure, the music is great, but his storytelling makes it best in class for today’s Classic Rock stations.”

Additional pick-ups for "Alice's Attic" this week are WLER-FM Pittsburgh, WMDC-FM Milwaukee, KKDC-FM Albuquerque, KROR-FM Lincoln and WLLT-FM Rockford IL. Audacy: Driver Dashboard Habits Have Witnessed a Significant Shift In The Last Two Years

THE MOUTH, MARCH 12TH, 2024 - From 2021 to 2023, Audacy conducted four surveys to explore the connected car experience, aiming to decipher what truly captivates drivers. The resounding answer? Audio emerges as the driving force behind an unforgettable journey. Today’s modern fleet of connected cars is advancing with intelligence, safety, and interactivity at its core. Equipped with smart dashboards and the integration of cutting-edge AI technology, the vehicle’s cabin has transformed into an immersive and interactive experience. Audacy has unveiled the power of Audio in the connected car, driven by research that has been the roadmap for the industry, revealing the hottest trends in automotive tech and how users are steering their experiences.

Audio Dominates the Next Dashboard -Two-thirds of drivers listen to AM/FM Radio, 20% more than music library streaming. Moreover, 45% of respondents want their next connected car to have voice activation. When it comes to what connected drivers value most, ease of use and safety are at the top of the list. Enter the dashboard. Driver behaviors have witnessed a significant shift in the last two years, with a 10% increase in accessing Audio through the dashboard from 2021 to 2023, while phone usage for Audio experienced a 17% decline. Whether tuning into a favorite station or catching up with the latest Superfly episode, they expect a smooth experience without interruptions. Moreover, they exhibit readiness to spend, particularly in high-budget categories like home improvement and financial services, responding actively to targeted radio ads.

Nearly Half of Radio App Users Sought Information About Advertised Products Online After Hearing Ad in the car - Compared to 22% of all listeners. 31% of Radio App users and 27% of Voice users visited the store they heard about, doubling the rate of all listeners. 27% of Radio App users purchased advertised products, more than doubling the rate of all listeners. Dave Bethell, COO and Co-Owner of TM Studios said, “As a jingle nerd, designing a package for Todd, WLS and with the ICONIC logo is an honor that we don’t take lightly. SiriusXM’s Airs 'A Life In Sound' Ad During Oscars

THE MOUTH, MARCH 11TH, 2024 - SiriusXM brought “A Life in Sound,” short film directed by Emmy Award-winning director Kim Gehrig, to Sunday night's Oscars. The film. as Fast Company's Jeff Beer points out, is an ad that’s aimed at further boosting the overall rebrand and streaming app that launched last fall. SiriusXM chief growth officer Suzi Watford says that the product team has been working over the past few years to build a product that highlights Sirius’ various types of content, from music and human-curated radio shows and playlists to play-by-play sports and Howard Stern.

“We’ve done a better job over the years of establishing those benefits, but haven’t done enough talking about the emotional ones,” she says. The campaign includes billboards and out-of-home ads that will be in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Boston, and Atlanta, to highlight three of the fastest-growing genres across the SiriusXM portfolio: hip-hop, country, and sports.

Each scene shows a single listener, surrounded by a crowd of fans. Shot by photographer and filmmaker Gabriel Moses, the crowd shots feature actual SiriusXM subscribers and superfans of these genres. SiriusXM] Uncommon’s co-founder and chief creative officer Nils Leonard says that many Americans already think they know what SiriusXM is about, and this campaign’s job is to help them reconsider. “Imagine there was a new audio brand that landed from the West Coast for a young audience, what would it do?” says Leonard. “Well, it would offer up incredible opinions from the most fiery people on the planet. It would give you live music, unrecorded, re-recorded cover versions, it would give you all the stuff that we know people want. But that’s actually already in existence, and it’s called SiriusXM. So all we’ve got to do is add emotion, energy, and excitement to a brand that already exists and get people to look at it again.” Photos/SiriusXM - Read Fast Company Article Here - Watch Ad Here

Tracy Johnson Tackles The 'Love And Fear' About AI - Either way, 'It's Here To Stay'

THE MOUTH, MARCH 11TH, 2024 - In a new blog from Talent consultant Tracy Johnson, he weighs in on all the buzz about AI saying some love it, others are confused, many are intrigued, and some hate it. "There’s a lot of love and fear about AI, but it’s here to stay, and the sooner you figure out how to use it, the greater your advantage," says Johnson.

"While helping develop Radio Content Pro, the AI-driven new service for radio, I talked to dozens (hundreds?) of broadcasters, and there was a lot of FUD: Fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Some have tried it but soon gave up. Others are skeptical and refuse to start. Each week, more people begin to play with artificial intelligence, but there’s still a general lack of activity because of a lack of understanding."

"Recently, I spoke with several managers, programmers, and personalities to measure their emotions about using AI on their stations. I tried to avoid the highly polarizing topic of the potential for AI voices to replace live personalities, though many brought it up. Those discussions reminded me of voice-tracking’s controversial (and equally scorned) introduction. But let’s kick that down the road for a future conversation. Here are some things broadcasters love and fear about AI, with recommendations for each.

First up: Fear About AI: Confusion - This is the most common reaction. Even those who understand the potential and are well-read on recent developments in Artificial Intelligence have difficulty keeping up with the constant improvements and innovations. Many are paralyzed by the overwhelming (and rapidly expanding) options. Some lack the confidence to try something new and explain it to their team, while others don’t understand technical terms and what it means. Among those who have ventured into using AI on their stations, a few gave up, concluding it’s “not ready for prime time,” as one personality put it. That may be true sometimes, but there’s wisdom in the old saying, “Garbage in, garbage out.”

Johnson adds, " AI has to be trained to work for you, and that takes time, experimentation, and thought, a commodity in short supply at today’s busy radio stations. He recommends: Use Chat GPT, Anthropic’s Claude, or Microsoft’s CoPilot to start understanding how AI works. Pro Tip: The paid versions are inexpensive and much more powerful. You will get far greater results.

Johnson concludes There’s Plenty To Love and Fear About AI. The exciting thing is that we’re in the first inning of this ballgame. AI is about to invade every aspect of our lives. Read Entire Post Here

Programming Posts Remain 'Greatest Challenge' In MIW's Latest Annual Gender Analysis Study

THE MOUTH, MARCH 8TH, 2024 - Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio, Inc. (MIW) released data gathered for their annual MIW Gender Analysis Study specifically tracking the progress of female professionals holding General Manager, Sales Manager, and Program Director/Brand Manager positions.

The MIW Gender Analysis Study, based on raw data collected by PrecisionTrak from all US-based commercial radio stations, has been released every year since the organization's start in 2000. The figures and percentages shown below represent the calendar year 2023 and are reflective of 11,215 AM and FM radio stations across America, as accounted for by PrecisionTrak as of December 31, 2023.

General Managers:  22.17% (2356 stations) had women holding the General Manager position in 2023. This is almost 2 share points of growth from last year but continues to show growth from 2004 when the percentage of female General Managers was only 14.9%. In the Top 100 markets,  23.96% (828 stations)  were managed by women, which is also more than a full percentage point up from 2022 and still continues to run a bit higher than the national average.

Sales Managers: Overall, the best management opportunities for women in radio continues to be in sales management.  34.37% (3476 stations) had a woman Sales Manager in 2023, but that number is basically flat from 33.45% in 2022. In the Top 100 markets, although the numbers run slightly higher than the national average, the story showed a 3-point percentage drop for 2023.  35.16% (1379 stations) had women serving as Sales Managers in 2023, versus  38.05% in 2022.

Program Directors/Brand Managers: The greatest challenge for women in radio management continues to be in the area of Program Directors/Brand Managers.  Women currently program 11.50% (1173 stations)  Which again, is flat from 2022. In the Top 100 markets, the news was even worse as female programmers now represent only  10.14% of the total number of Program Directors/Brand Managers, which is another drop of over 3 share points from 2022.

MIW Board President Ruth Presslaff said, “Navigating today's landscape poses unique challenges for both the industry at large and women in particular. Our commitment to fostering change remains unwavering. Through MIW's array of mentoring initiatives, we not only recognize but also amplify the voices of women. We are beyond grateful to the companies and individuals who champion our mission. As we press forward, we eagerly anticipate seizing new opportunities to empower even more women in the year ahead."

EDISON: Twitter/X Usage In U.S. Sees 30% Decline

THE MOUTH, MARCH 7TH, 2024 - In this week's Edison lnsight, they point to “X (formerly known as Twitter).” Following Elon Musk taking control over Twitter in the Fall of 2022 with a highly-publicized $44 billion acquisition, and in April of last year renaming it X, The Infinite Dial survey this year shows a dramatic decrease in the number of people who are using the service in the U.S. In 2022 and 2023, 27% of the total population in the U.S. reported using Twitter.

In the 2024 Infinite Dial, 19% of the total population in the U.S. are using “X - a 30% drop from 2023. While The Infinite Dial has recorded many incremental changes over its long history, a 30% change in any metric year-over-year is incredibly rare and noteworthy, acknowledging that in 2022 and 2023 the survey referred to the service as "Twitter" and in 2024 it referred to the service as "X. Keep in mind this is not a measure of subscribers or Twitter/X accounts, but a measure of people who say they are “currently ever” using the service.

In addition to this overall usage drop, Twitter/X saw declines in monthly and weekly usage. The Infinite Dial 2024 will provide more details about the state of social media usage in the U.S., including which social media services are gaining in popularity and which services are used most often by various age groups.

We hope you will join us for the presentation via livestream, or in person at Podcast Movement Evolutions on March 28 at 3pm ET. Even if you are attending Podcast Movement Evolutions in person, you will want to register for the free Infinite Dial livestream! This ensures you will receive a link to the replay and to the downloadable presentation deck.

Programmers Weigh-In On Beyonce Airplay On Country Radio; 'It Just Sounds So Freakin' Good'

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 15TH, 2024 - The Super Bowl may be over, but the debate on whether country radio will play Beyoncé’s new songs which aired during Sunday's big game rages on. Houston's 93Q PD Travis Moon tells EW's Wesley Stenzel "I'm excited because it just sounds so freaking good on the radio," Stenzel writes, 'If the singles “Texas Hold ‘Em’ and “16 Carriages” are any indication, Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance: Act II appears to be her first full-fledged country project."

Moon says he’s “all-in” on “Texas Hold ‘Em.” “We're playing right now. We’re actually the first station in America to officially add the song,” he tells EW. Moon’s enthusiasm stems from the quality of the track rather than the singer’s stardom. “Am I going at this going, ‘Hey, I want to convert every Beyoncé fan to love country music?’ That's not why I'm doing this,” he explains. “I added the song because it's a great song, and I'm excited because it just sounds so freaking good on the radio.

Meanwhile, Nick Russo, program manager for Houston’s US99 Country, is prioritizing “16 Carriages” over “Texas Hold ‘Em,” as he thinks the track should make a strong impression on country fans, as he noted in an Instagram Reel he shared with EW. ‘16 Carriages’ deserves equal weight in this situation. In the storyline, it really hits the heart, and that's where country music lives. The songs live in your heart.” Russo compared the song’s lyrics, which reflect on the narrator’s teenage years, to Taylor Swift’s early work.

Mike Levine of Go Country 105 in Los Angeles is also excited about Beyoncé’s new music. “The new single sounds great,” he says. “We will probably be able to play it like one or two times this week just to sample it, but I won't know until about a month or so, once we start looking at programming again, just to see how the data is on it, and if it's something we add to our regular programming or not.” The radio managers are optimistic about the singer’s potential to convert the Beyhive into country fans. “Anything to make country more approachable is amazing, so it's fantastic,” Levine says. STUDY: Telecommunications Among Most Impacted Industries By Technology in 2024

S

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 2ND, 2024 - “The Impact of Technology in 2024 and Beyond,” found AI as the technology most likely to have the greatest impact on a broad range of industries from film to medicine. The Impact of Technology in 2024 and Beyond: AN IEEE global study (IEEE) Extended reality, cloud computing, 5G and electric vehicles are also among the top five most important technologies in 2024, according to the IEEE. The survey of CTOS (Global Tech. Officers) from the US, UK, China, India and Brazil found AI to be the most impactful technology next year, encompassing predictive and generative AI, machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP).

Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Financial Industries Most impacted by Technology in 2024- The top five industry sectors that will be most impacted by technology in 2024, according to survey responses, are:

  • (41%) telecommunications (as compared to 40% in 2023)

  • (39%) manufacturing (as compared to 30% in 2023)

  • (39%) banking and financial services (as compared to 33% in 2023)

  • (31%) automotive and transportation (as compared to 39% in 2023)

  • (31%) energy (as compared to 33% in 2023)

According to the survey, among the top uses of AI in the coming year will be real-time cybersecurity, increasing supply chain efficiency, aiding and accelerating software development, automating customer service, and the speeding up screening of job applicants. However, integrating AI into existing work isn’t as straightforward as flipping a switch. In the study, nearly half of respondents said they see difficulty integrating AI into existing workflows as one of the top three concerns when it comes to using generative AI in 2024.

The benefit of AI is clear to many, but there’s a tricky part: potential risks. Among them is the risk of overreliance on generative AI for facts. As the IEEE puts it, the problem is that those facts aren’t always accurate. And with all forms of AI, it can be difficult to find out how, exactly, the software arrived at its conclusion. In the survey, 59% of respondents cited an “overreliance on AI and potential inaccuracies” as a top concern of AI use in their organizations. Part of the problem is that the training data itself can be inaccurate. “Verifying training data is difficult because the provenance is not available and volume of the training data is enormous,” said IEEE life fellow Paul Nikolic. In 2024 and beyond, expect intense efforts to ensure that AI results are more accurate, and the data used to train AI models is clean. Read Full Report Here
