EDISON: 53% Of 13-34 Year Olds Are Reached By At Least Some Radio Every Single Day

THE MOUTH, APRIL 18TH, 2024 - Two of the themes running through many presentations and panels at NAB 2024 over the past several days have been in-car listening and listening among younger audio consumers. It turns out, when we are talking about today’s 13-34 year olds, the two topics come together. According to Share of Ear® from Edison Research, fully 53% of today’s 13-34 year olds are reached by at least some radio every single day – a stat that points to radio’s resilient reach. But location of listening is key when it comes to radio consumption among this group. The car is not only a good place to reach young radio listeners, for many it’s the ONLY place they listen. Among the 13-34s who listen to any radio, 56% of them will listen only in the car.

Programmers should consider the fact that when their messages and music are heard by young radio listeners, it is often in an in-car environment. Of course that means 44% of younger radio listeners report listening either someplace else, or both in the car and someplace else, which is also notable.

Share of Ear also tells us when young Americans are most likely to be listening to radio in the car. Morning (6am - 10am) and late afternoon (3pm -7pm) drive times are important for engaging almost all audiences, but specifically Americans 13-34. Programmers should be mindful of all the content they place on-air during these times since this key demographic is most likely to be listening to radio in the car then. Further daypart and age information is available within the broader Share of Ear report.

Beloved Kansas City Host Brian 'Slacker' Adams of KCFX-FM Passes Away Following Cancer Battle

THE MOUTH, APRIL 18TH, 2024 - Longtime Kansas City afternoon host, Brian "Slacker" Adams, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer. Slacker, a 33-year veteran of Cumulus Kansas City radio, was on-air at 101 The Fox for the last 16 years. He was 59.

"It is with a broken heart that we share with you that our friend Slacker has passed away due to complications from AML. His wife Jennifer and daughter Brianna were with him at home as he left this life. We know you’ll join us at 101 The Fox in expressing your heartfelt condolences to Slacker’s family. Slacker had two great passions - his family, and his time on the air in Kansas City.

For over 33 years, the last 16 at 101 The Fox, Slacker loved to entertain his radio audience. He helped Veterans with Cars 4 Heroes and many other charities. He pointed out the little absurdities we all deal with, making us laugh at him and ourselves. Named Radio Legend by his peers, Slacker was a voice of, and for, Kansas City. Sadly, that voice is now silent. If you choose, Slacker asked that you pray for his family, and all who are affected by cancer. And pick up the phone and talk to that friend you haven't gotten around to talking to, today. Slacker would like that."

101 The Fox, Kansas City 101 The Fox aired a one-hour Slacker Special last night. In the special, Slacker talks about his favorite interviews, music, and what he loved about being on the radio in Kansas City. To stream the special, visit: https://www.101thefox.net/. The station has also posted a video tribute here.

And with syndication, having the full backing of David Wood and WIBC, and Dennis Green of Key Networks guiding the ship, I have that perfect alignment. Study: 'Audiences Are Open To Use Of AI For Content Creation - 'Just Want To Be Informed Of Use'

THE MOUTH, APRIL 16TH, 2024 -During this week's NAB Show in Las Vegas, Futuri’s CEO Daniel Anstandig, alongside co-presenter Ameca, the AI-powered humanoid robot, shared findings from a study conducted on AI's role in media. Futuri’s AI in Media Study surveyed nearly 5,200 media consumers across the United States, including 2,624 radio listeners, revealing powerful insights into audience perceptions, expectations, and the future of AI-powered media content. The study was conducted by CMG Custom Research. The findings challenge the traditional approach of radio and audio content production, suggesting a shift towards openness to human-AI collaboration:

"Futuri’s study shows that audiences are open to media’s adoption of AI for content creation. In fact, 1 in 5 listeners believe they already listen to a radio station that is using AI. Listeners also believe that AI will assist media in creating more relevant and engaging content. They just want to be informed of its use, and for it to be used in the right scenarios,"

Anstandig noted, "This study reveals an industry at the dawn of an AI revolution. The demand for content in general, is at an all-time high, and AI promises to make broadcast teams capable of generating the sheer volume of audio content across multiple platforms that audiences demand.”

Anstandig concluded: “Now is the time for radio to maximize its human talent, and use AI to enhance our ability to produce content for every daypart and every platform. The radio industry is not served by debates about whether or not AI is coming... it’s here, it’s inevitable. Content creators are using AI to grow their audience and revenue every day. Now, we in radio need to adopt practical tools and solutions to make ourselves more efficient and impactful. Radio is also not served by debates about replacing humans with AI. We need all the human ingenuity and creativity we can get, and we need to augment and extend it with AI. A strong media industry is good for democracy, and good for society. ”

Leighton Media To Demonstrate How Small/Medium Market Radio Broadcasters Can Achieve Digital O&O Revenue

THE MOUTH, APRIL 12TH, 2024 -With the steady decline of on-air ad revenues continuing, many radio broadcasters have turned to digital ad sales to make up the difference and stake their claim as effective solutions for their advertisers. While many radio groups desire to make this adjustment, they face the challenge of convincing advertisers of being a viable option.

Leighton Media, the group owner of radio stations in seven locations in the Upper Midwest, is celebrating results generated by their internal digital ad sales team which serves as living proof that radio can be successful at selling digital. Leighton is reporting a tremendous rise in digital revenue generated by their owned assets with an impressive increase of approximately 4x over the last five years, the same time frame during which Leighton has been partnered with SoCast.

At Leighton, outgoing Executive Director of Digital, Kelli Frieler, was responsible for overseeing much of the growth in digital sales during the company’s five-year partnership with SoCast. According to Kelli, “As we focused our efforts on a content-first approach, we needed a technology partner that enabled our team to manage many properties effectively and efficiently. SoCast’s partnership gave our team the support to scale quickly and keep audience experience at the forefront of our efforts. As our audience platforms expanded, our partnership with SoCast gave us the extra support we needed to manage all of the integrations, vendor relationships, app store administration, and multiple billing teams."

Edison: The Top Five Podcasts For Exclusive Listeners

THE MOUTH, APRIL 11TH, 2024 - In Edison's latest weekly insights it says for most people, once they start listening to podcasts, they can’t stop. A new listener starts with that first show, which leads to another show, and down the podcasting rabbit hole they go. For others, it is a single show that captures their attention and all of their podcasting time gets devoted to it.

In Edison Research’s recently released Infinite Dial 2024 report, we determined that more than one-third (34%) of all Americans age 13 and older now listen to podcasts each week. Among this group, there is a portion that listens to only one podcast title in that week. Using Edison Podcast Metrics we can look at shows that perform best for garnering these kinds of listeners.

Looking at the 500 biggest active shows in America, shown above are the shows with the highest portion of their audience that listens exclusively to that show. Each of these shows features a unique voice. But at the top of the list, and the leader by a large margin, is one of the many great stories that podcasting has spawned, a show hosted by Father Mike Schmitz, a Catholic priest from Minnesota. The Bible in a Year publishes every single day, starting on New Year’s Day, winding through the entire bible text to finish by December 31.

Edison Podcast Metrics estimates that an average of 30% of listeners to this show will not listen to any other show each week. Podcasting allows so many unique voices to find their audience, often in a manner that no one else might have considered. That a priest in Duluth Minnesota could build a very large and clearly very devoted audience is just one of so many examples of how podcasting fills in spaces in the content universe and sometimes finds large spaces that no one else could see.

Chaz & AJ Make 6-Year-Old’s Wish Come True

de

THE MOUTH, APRIL 10TH, 2024 - Chaz and AJ, the co-hosts of Connecticut’s “Chaz and AJ in the Morning,” heard on 99.1 WPLR FM AND 95.9 WFOX FM, teamed up with Premier Subaru of Branford and Make-A-Wish Connecticut to help grant a child’s wish. Six-year-old Camryn from Guilford bravely battles leukemia. Her one wish was to have a playhouse in her backyard – somewhere for her and her sister to play.

On Thursday, April 4th, Chaz and AJ began accepting donations at wplr.com and 959thefox.com to help raise the $10,000 needed to make Camyrn’s wish come true. To help generate excitement and donations, AJ agreed, if the total amount was raised, that he would travel across Camryn’s hometown of Guilford and perform karaoke to her favorite singer Taylor Swift. Thanks to the incredible support and generosity of Chaz and AJ listeners, the $10,000 was raised in record time and Friday, April 5th, AJ made good on his promise and performed a series of mini-concerts throughout Guilford starting at Premier Subaru which he dubbed “The AJ Errors Tour.” He was joined by Make-A-Wish and Camryn herself along with her family, who helped back-up AJ with singing and dancing to Taylor Swift favorite.

“I was very honored to be a small part of helping Camyrn’s wish come true. To the town of Guilford, I’m sorry for any shattered ear drums,” said AJ. Camryn’s mother Courtney said, “Our family has been so touched by the kindness and generosity of Chaz and AJ and all their listeners. The girls had an incredible time on the “Errors Tour,” so surrounded by love and support, and of course Taylor hits! Thank you so much from all of us!”

WRMF-FM's Kevin Rolston Of The 'KVJ Show Named Recipient Of MSBC's 2024 'Kidd Kraddick Award'

S

THE MOUTH, MARCH 26, 2024 - ICYMI, Kevin Rolston of WRMF-FM's top-rated KVJ show has been named the 2024 recipient of Morning Show Boot Camp's (MSBC) prestigious 'Kidd Kraddick Award'. Kevin is joined on-air by co-hosts Virginia Sinicki and Jason Pennington (shown L-R). Named in honor of the late Kidd Kraddick, the annual award recognizes those of unparalleled success, inimitable style and authenticity. exemplary service to their community and serving as a constant source of inspiration to other shows and personalities.

dTraditionally, each year's recipient is charged with selecting the following year's honoree. Last year's recipient, Dave Ryan (R) of iHeart's KDWB-FM Minneapolis, said in selecting Rolston, "The responsibility of choosing the next Kidd Kraddick Award winner is the hardest part of winning this award. So many amazing radio people went through my head like characters on a slot machine! But I owed Kevin for helping me hide that body at Boot Camp 2014 so I knew he was the one."

Ryan adds, "Seriously, Kevin is amazing on two important fronts. Of course he's an incredible radio talent. His content is different and fun and innovative and absolutely compelling. He never plays it safe and it pays off. On top of dthat, he's a visionary. He sees where the industry is going and how to get his show on that same path. If you want to know where to point your show in 2024, follow Kevin. He gets it. I get such a kick out of knowing I had anything to do with Kevin's career and I'm honored to pass this award on to that college student that used to listen to my show back in the day."

On being named as this year's recipient Kevin says, "There isn't an honor I would cherish more. I believe Kidd Kraddick was the most gifted person to ever crack a microphone in our industry. Everyone to have received his award is an industry giant. I don't feel worthy, but I'm not gonna turn this down either! And to receive this award from Dave Ryan is such a cool full-circle moment for me."

"Dave Ryan is the sole reason I'm even in radio in the first place," Kevin added, "Hearing him on the Morning Zoo at WNCI in Columbus as a young impressionable kid at Ohio University who couldn't pick a career path, inspired me and gave me the idea that maybe I could do this too. I wanted to be him so bad. Kind of weird where life takes you."

Past honorees include Bert Weiss of the syndicated 'The Bert Show,' The YEA Network Syndicated 'The Kidd Kraddick Show, The Ace & TJ Show, 97X Quad Cities' Dwyer & Michaels Show, Big 105.9 Miami's Paul Castronovo, BJ Shea, co-host of The BJ & Sarah Mornings on KZOK-FM Seattle, The Roula & Ryan Show, on KRBE-FM Houston, Brother Wease Radio 95.1 Rochester, Mojo of Channel 955 Detroit's Mojo in the Morning and, of course, Dave Ryan.
