Radio News Director Facing Deportation Advised To 'Get Married' To Stay Here

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 14TH, 2015 –– Catie Quinn has tried for months to retain her U.S. work visa so she can continue with her job as news director of the KSRM Radio Group in Alaska. According to redoubtreporter.com, Quinn said 'For some reason immigration wanted to 7nitpick. They are not convinced that this job (listed as ‘radio announcer’) requires a bachelor’s level education, which is one of the requirements for a work visa,” Quinn said. The immigration agency determined that a news director does not require a college education. On Dec. 23, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services informed Quinn her application for visa renewal was denied and she must return to Australia. She was ordered to immediately leave the U.S., the country in which she’s been working and paying taxes. She’s got a one-way ticket back to Sydney booked for Jan. 27. “The advice I’ve gotten from everyone, from the U.S. CIS office in Anchorage to immigration attorneys, I’m not even kidding you, is, ‘Get married. That’s the only way.’ It’s not even a joke. I’ve stopped laughing now when people say that. I’ve stopped blushing when people say, ‘Well, I’ll marry you.’ And some of them are already married,” she said. Quinn plans to return to Australia as directed. She will stay with a childhood friend’s parents to start with and look for work. But her first stop will be at the consulate to apply for another visa, as news director at KSRM. The station is currently accepting applications for the position, and plans to hold it open for 60 days. READ COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 14TH, 2015 –– For those still doubting the growing 7interest in podcasts, don't tell that to national trades like The Hollywood Reporter or The Wrap. Along with worldwide coverage of 'Serial,' the latest story catching attention involves the firing of former Adam Carolla co-host, Alison Rosen. No sooner had the new year begun, Carolla announced on his podcast: “Alison Rosen is not gonna be part of this program in 2015. Why? Nothing personal. I like Alison Rosen. I think Alison Rosen is very talented and very funny. I think she’s a great writer and I think she’s a great comedic voice, but I don’t think 7she’s a great sidekick ... It’s not a personal thing ... I just feel like she wasn’t sidekick material...” In the days that followed, Carolla was met with a social media firestorm by disgruntled, and angry rants from Alison fans. The Wrap posted that Rosen fans realized that something 'akin to Howard Stern firing Robin Quivers had just occurred.' Alison Rosen’s sudden replacement is Gina Grad (R), formerly of 97.1 KLSX in and KFI 640 LA. Rosen wrote at her website (L), "I loved working for Adam Carolla, loved being a part of The Adam Carolla Show ... ... I’m sorry to the fans for all the controversy that’s arisen. Podcasting is an intimate medium and it’s a rare privilege to have become a part of your daily lives. In turn, you deserve the best from us." She added: "I love Adam as a friend, a mentor and a comedian and I wish him and the rest of my Carolla Digital colleagues nothing but the best. Meanwhile, on yesterday's show where he was joined Anthony Cumia, Carolla felt the need to expand further on his decision to let Rosen go. LISTEN HERE

Spotify Reports 60 Million Subscribers; 15 Million Paying For Streamed Service

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 13TH, 2015 –– Spotify, sans Taylor Swift, has revealed it has 60 Million subscribers with 15 million of them paying for 7streamed service. According to The Daily Mail, the platform added 10m new users in last two months on 2014. As you'll recall, Swift removed her entire back catalog from Spotify as she was promoting new album 1989, which sold 1.287 copies in its first week. "We had an amazing 2014 at Spotify and owe it all to you, the music fans who listen, discover, share and celebrate music and artists with us every day of the year,' the firm said. The company also introduced its 'family plan' in November, enabling subscribers to add up to four family members with their own accounts on the service for $4.99 a month. 'If you take away only one thing, it should be this: No free, no paid, no two billion dollars.' The latter figure related to the amount of royalties paid out by Spotify since its launch in 2008, including $1bn paid out in 2014 alone. Singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran was the year's most streamed artist on Spotify, while Eminem tops the list in the United States. Pharrell's 'Happy' was the most streamed song of the year globally. Sheeran racked up more than 860 million listens on Spotify. His latest album, 'x,' is the most streamed album worldwide with 430 million streams. Katy Perry and Coldplay were the most streamed female and group around the world, respectively.

PBS' 'Downtown Abbey' Finally Gets Its Own Wireless Radio

7

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 13TH, 2015 –– We'll call this a story within a story. If you follow the hugely popular 'Downtown Abbey' series on PBS, your ears probably perked up a bit during the second episode of the fifth season of “Downtown Abbey,” as Lord Grantham changed his mind and decided that the family could finally get a wireless radio. According to bloomberview.com, after several attempts by Lady Rose to persuade her uncle to allow a wireless radio to be installed, Grantham is finally persuaded when he learns that the king will be speaking on the radio. Bloomberg's Stephen L. Carter opined that nowadays, such news 'would occasion a shrug.' At the time, it was a thunderclap." The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) had been founded just two years earlier, and although there were many who believed wireless was nothing but a fad, the fact that the king would stoop to addressing the nation on the radio taught a valuable lesson about the power of the new medium. The historian John M. MacKenzie quotes John Reith, at the time the BBC’s managing director, who wrote in his diary: “Everything went most successfully, including the broadcast which went all over the country and was the biggest thing we have done yet.”
