THE MOUTH, JANUARY 15TH, 2014 –– KLAX-FM/97.9's "El Mandril" Sanchez, one of the top names in Spanish-language radio, is no longer on the Spanish Broadcasting System outlet according to billboard.com. A representative for Sanchez said the investigation did not show any violations. Billboard reports that Sanchez reported to work as part of his contract, which ended Dec. 13, but his morning show was no longer broadcast. As for Sanchez, he has yet to make any public comments regarding his departure or future.

Buffalo Talker Tells Listeners He's Mentally Fit To Be On-Air Following Spying Claims

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 14TH, 2014 –– WBEN/Buffalo talk host Tom Bauerle took to the air yesterday during his regular slot telling listeners that he has “been under a lot of physical duress” and underscoring that he will continue as host of the station’s afternoon show. According to The Buffalo News, this followed a Sunday story indicating he has been a frequent subject of attention by the Amherst Police Department after complaining of alleged spying by operatives of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. “It’s been no secret that I have been under a lot of physical duress and situations over the course of the past year or so,” he said. “As I said on Friday, I have dealt with a great deal of exhaustion ... I am clinically and mentally fit,” he said. “I’m cleared to be here. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be here." Bauerle also mentioned ailments such as chronic fluid on the brain, the installation of a pacemaker, a food-borne illness he said he contracted during a recent Dominican Republic vacation, and chronic pain stemming from crushed vertebrae he suffered in an auto accident. Reportedly, Bauerle told police on Jan. 8 that Cuomo operatives were spying on him from his backyard, according to two law enforcement sources. Though The Buffalo News filed a Freedom of Information request regarding the incident on Jan. 8, Amherst Town Attorney Thomas E. Jones issued a denial letter Monday. “No crimes or arrests are reported,” Jones said. “The records do contain medical and other personal information concerning the subject. It is our opinion that the release of the report would constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy as defined by the Public Officers Law.”

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 14TH, 2014 –– In a story Jockline Daily first reported last week, Joel “JB” Baker (shown) a host on KXDD/Yakima, Wash. underwent oral cancer surgery on January 3rd, which removed his tongue and replaced it with a muscle graft. According to The Daily Interlake, he remains in a Seattle hospital unable to fully speak. His wife Kelly said “We’re all alive, so we’ve got that going,” she said. “It was a nine-and-a-half-hour surgery. It was a long one. We can’t say [the cancer] is all gone, but the doctors think they got it all.” After the surgery, Kelly and her father spent several days in the intensive care unit looking after Baker. “He’s started mouthing words, and he always asks me, ‘Have you eaten?’ ‘How did you sleep?’” she said. “He was adamant the hospital got a cot up there so I could sleep.” When not mouthing words, Baker uses his whiteboard (including pens with magnets on them) to communicate with friends and family. His wife said he can get down sometimes, but has been reading his Bible and thinking of his kids more often. “It’s never going to be normal again. It’s a new normal,” Kelly said. “Everything will be all right. We’ll be all right.” A fundraiser to help Baker beat cancer was formed, including a one-day 'Pay for Play' event on the station. So far, $8,000 has been raised. Photo courtesy of The Yakima Herald
