Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins To Be Inducted Into Broadcasting & Cable's Hall Of Fame; David Kantor Named CEO Of Radio One's Radio Division

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2015 –– President and CEO of Radio One, Alfred C. Liggins III, will be inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame at tonight's annual ceremony in New York City. The event, being held at The Waldorf Astoria, will also mark B&C Hall of Fame history. Liggins, the son of Radio One Inc. founder Catherine Liggins Hughes (below), will receive the honor nearly 10 years after Hughes was recognized for heading the largest African-American-owned radio station group in the United States. This is the first time a mother and a son have been inducted into the B&C Hall of Fame.

7“It has been 35 years and Radio One, Inc. still stands as the only African-American owned and targeted multi-media platform in the United States reaching over 82% of Black households with our diversified portfolio of media assets,” Liggins said. Radio One owns TV One, Reach Media, One Solution and Interactive One, the parent company of NewsOne.com. The B&C Class of 2015 inductees include Ed Carroll, Kathie Lee Gifford and Dr. Phil McGraw, among others.

In other Radio One news, David Kantor has been named Chief Executive Officer of its Radio Division and will now oversee its 54 stations in 16 markets while continuing to run Reach Media. Kantor's past leadership roles have included serving as President of ABC Radio Networks in the 90's and SVP of Network Operations at AM/FM Inc. In 2003 Kantor and Tom Joyner founded Reach Media "I know this business," Kantor said. "I started my career in local radio and in every network position I've had, I’ve touched local radio. I’m excited about the new opportunities before us as we leverage our leading network and local radio business in the market."

TIM COOK: Apple Music Has 15-Million Users; 6.5 Million Paying Subscribers

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2015 ––  Speaking at WSJDLive, The Wall Street Journal’s global technology conference, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said the company has 6.5 million paying customers for Apple Music and 8.5 million customers on three-month trials.

According to The WSJ, after the 3-mos. trial period, users pay $9.99 a month for individual subscriptions or $14.99 for families. The first batch of customers came off the trial period at the end of September. In August, Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue, who is overseeing the rollout of Apple Music, said it had 11 million people on the trial version of the service. That indicates nearly 60% of those users agreed to pay for the service after the trial period ended.

By comparison, Spotify, which launched in 2008, claims to have 75 million active users and 20 million subscribers. Cook said consumers are responding positively to one of the main differentiating features of its service: human curation of playlists. “The runway here is really good,” he said. Mr. Cook also said that the new version of Apple TV will start shipping at the end of next week. Cook said he sees a “massive change” coming in the automobile industry as major technologies shift the sector away from today’s combustion-engine focus. He said he sees software, electrification and autonomous driving technologies playing a crucial role in the cars of the future.

Drew Lane & Detroit Sports Part Ways Over Show Content Issue

7THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2015 –– Greater Media announced that Afternoon Drive host Drew Lane will not be renewing his contract with Detroit Sports 105.1 in the Motor City. Lane has been on the air on the station since August of 2013. Prior to that, he served as the morning show co-host at WRIF-FM. “Drew is a phenomenal talent and has been a valued member of the Greater Media family for over 21 years. Both sides regret an agreement could not be reached on the direction of the show moving forward. We are truly sorry to see him go and wish him all the best." In the interim, Midday Personality Matt Dery will serve as the fill-in host on the show.

Steve Chessare, vice president/market manager for Greater Media Detroit tells Detroit News, the issue wasn’t money. “The only issue we had is in show content,” Chessare said. “Drew has done a phenomenal job for Greater Media for 24 years, and he was instrumental in us getting the sports station launched, but we’ve come to recognize that we’ve got to be true to our format, which is sports, both to the audience and our clients and partners, that we deliver a sports product. “I was trying to impress on Drew to infuse more sports into the show, and Drew was not comfortable doing any more than he was doing right now. We had an issue, in that we weren’t recycling the audience throughout the rest of the day and vice versa."

Radio's Doctor Daliah Comes To Aid Of Wal-Mart Customer

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 19TH, 2015 –– GCN Network's Dr. Daliah came to the rescue of a Wal-Mart customer last Friday night after having a seizure while shopping. She tells Jockline, "I was in the contact lens section finding solution for my son when I heard a man make loud repetitive sounds and then fall back. A woman started screaming and I ran over telling her to calm down. Things were falling off the shelves and I was afraid the other customers would think a blue light special was going on. I told everyone to stay back and let him finish his seizure and tried to keep him safe. He tried getting up when he was done and still out of it and had to fight him to stay down until AMR arrived. People freaked out since he looked like he was dying but he was ok and went to the ER stable."

Daliah posted on facebook: "Walmart staff did a great job working with me!! And thank you AMR for your fast response time. He's stable and on his way to the ER. Hope no one stole the last sale box of tampons I had in my cart while I was away."

Based in Las Vegas, Dr. Daliah Wachs hosts the nationally syndicated medical talk show on GCN Network and luckily for the Walmart Customer, she is a currently practicing physician.
