Radio's Kevin Metheny Passes Away At 60

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 6TH, 2014 –– The industry was deeply saddened to learn over the weekend of the untimely passing 7of longtime executive, Kevin Metheny. Most recently, he served as Operations Manager of KGO and KSFO in San Francisco at the time of his death and a beloved and highly respected member of the Cumulus operations team. John Dickey, Executive Vice President, Programming and Content for Cumulus said "Kevin Metheny's sudden passing this afternoon is a devastating personal and professional loss for his broadcasting family at Cumulus, and for the entire radio industry. Kevin was a legendary broadcasting talent who touched many lives in his remarkable 44-year career, and whose successes made an indelible mark on radio. His reputation and accomplishments are simply unparalleled and we are grateful for having had the opportunity to work with him .. We will miss him profoundly." Kevin got his start at KWHP-FM in Edmond, Oklahoma while still in high school. From there, he made several stops along the way including his much fabled stint in 1980 at W-NNNNNN-BC NY where his contentious relationship with Howard Stern was immortalized in Stern's 1997 'Private Parts.' It also served as a launching pad for the career of Paul Giamatti (right center) who played Metheny's character, Kenny 'Pig Vomit" Rushton. Metheny often joked about the characterization even posting a photo a few years back on Twitter of a newspaper which headlined an article that included the term 'Pig Vomit' (shown). Soon after "Private Parts" came out, Metheny told the New York's Daily News that "of course, this isn't the way I'd prefer to be known," but that "you just have to roll with it." Other stops included MTV where he and others helped launched VH1. Eventually his skills led him to talk radio.

Brian Joyce Meets Aspiring Talk Host At Talk Radio 102.3 FM

7

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 6TH, 2014 –– Talk Radio 102.3/Chattanooga's Brian Joyce held a remote broadcast at Economy Honda Superstore. A young boy named Philip Roberts showed up with his mom. Joyce tells Jockline, "At first, we thought the mom was there to take a test drive or buy a new car. It turns out 7 year-old Philip is a huge fan of The Brian Joyce Show, to the point where he even pretends he has his own talk radio show! When he comes home from school, his mom says he sets up a table with a "Talk Radio 102.3" logo and puts on a headset, and he'll do an entire talk show for his mom & dad. Anyway, I thought this was super cool so I put Philip on the air with me and we did a 10-min segment on REAL talk radio! Later that evening, I received this email from his mother Claudia: "Hello Brian, It was nice to meet you at Economy Honda. Thank you both for putting Philip on your show. You made his day!! He really enjoyed it although he was very nervous. Right after we got home he put up his studio and put on Dad's headset and pretended he was Brian Joyce :))"

BLOCKBUSTER: CBS & Beasley Swap Stations In Philadelphia, Miami, Tampa And Charlotte

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 3RD, 2014 –– The much rumored swap between Beasley and CBS Radio finally came down yesterday with the announcement that CBS would be acquiring two stations from Beasley in Philadelphia, WRDW-FM (Top 40) and WXTU-FM (Country), and three stations in Miami, WKIS-FM (Country), WPOW-FM (Top 40) and WQAM-AM (Sports). At the same time, Beasley will take ownership of CBS stations in Tampa and Charlotte, as well as WIP-AM in Philadelphia. CBS Radio's Dan Mason (R) said "There are many positive effects this move will have on CBS RADIO in the future. Most importantly, for the first time we will own radio stations in Miami – a 7market where CBS already successfully operates two television stations, WFOR-TV and WBFS-TV. We’ve all seen the tremendous value we create by having our local radio and television properties work hand in hand." George G. Beasley, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Beasley, said, "Throughout Beasley Broadcast Group's 53-year history, we have actively managed our station portfolio with the goal of serving the local communities where we operate, diversifying our operations, managing risk and improving financial results. The asset exchange agreement with CBS Radio addresses all of these strategic objectives as, upon completion, we will expand our station base by nine stations and add completed clusters in Tampa and Charlotte which complement our already strong mid-Atlantic presence. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2014, subject to Federal Communications Commission approval.
