Florida, Georgia And Coastal South Carolina Brace For Matthew, 'Fiercest Hurricane In A Decade'

7

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 6TH, 2016 –– As we head into the weekend, our thoughts are with everyone along the lower east coast who are among massive evacuations headed to safety. According weather.com, Hurricane Matthew is now in the Northwest Bahamas and will likely strengthen before striking the Florida coast beginning sometime tonight. Matthew will likely bring hurricane-force winds to northeast Florida, Georgia and the coastal South Carolina and move off the Southeast coast well into next week. Hurricane Matthew is expected to be a rare Category 4 hurricane and strike the Florida East Coast tonight into Friday, and will bring destructive hurricane conditions to Georgia and much of the coastal Carolinas into the weekend. Project watch areas extend to just north of Charleston, South Carolina. This includes Savannah, Georgia and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. A hurricane warning remains in effect along the entire east coast of Florida, as well as the Bahamas.

Our radio friends and associates in the region are keeping us apprised of the latest news and updates and we'll provide more feedback on their coverage in the hours and days ahead. Most tell us until weather conditions change dramatically, simple update are the most they can share - or, as one host in Jacksonville quipped, at this point we're basically just talking about where to buy stuff - 'Home Depot owes us big time!'. Others, like Kevin Rolston, of WRMF/West Palm's KVJ Show says "We're talking about the lifestyle stuff news isn't covering - calming kids and pets." Meanwhile, if you have a story or photo to share, please send HERE

REPORT: 'Howard Stern Has Now Emerged At The Center Of The National Political Conversation'

7

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 6TH, 2016 –– In a lengthy piece in Politico, Virginia Heffernan writes that Howard Stern has now emerged at the center of the national political conversation. It was on Stern’s show where the then non-politician Trump commented on the Iraq War; It’s “hard to be a 10” if a woman is flat-chested and called the challenge of avoiding STDs his “personal Vietnam.” There was also Trump’s assertion in 1997 that he could have “gotten” Princess Diana. “Why do people think it’s egotistical of you to say you could’ve gotten with Lady Di?" asked Stern. You could’ve gotten her, right? You could’ve nailed her.” “I think I could have,” Trump responded, uncertainly.

Following some two dozen other interviews with Stern, according to counts by Buzzfeed and others, Heffernan adds that Trump admitted at times to being addicted to Stern’s show, telling Stern during one episode that he was late to at least one “really important” meeting, because he couldn’t tear himself away from the broadcast. Trump’s run on “The Howard Stern Show” came to a close right around 2004, when he met Mark Burnett, the creator of The Apprentice. Stern, for his part, hasn’t said whom, if anyone, he will vote for, writes Heffernan, but Stern's interviews with Trump will likely play on. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

BBC Host Sacked For Being White? JonBenet Ramsey’s Father Opens Up In Rare Radio Interview

By Graham Mack

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 6TH, 2016 –– Bafta award-winning comedian Jon Holmes was axed from The Now Show – the hit Radio 4 programme he has appeared on for 18 years – when bosses told him 'we're recasting it with more women and diversity.' In an article for The Mail on Sunday, Jon said he accepted the need for diversity but asked: 'Should I, as a white man (through no fault of my own), be fired from my job because I am a white man?' Damningly for the BBC, he revealed that even bosses responsible for setting up the Corporation's diversity 7policies had got in touch with him to say that political correctness 'had all got out of hand'. Jon revealed his sacking in a tweet in which he joked: 'And I didn't even punch a producer,' a reference to the reason behind Jeremy Clarkson's sacking by the BBC from Top Gear

JonBenet Ramsey’s father John has broken his silence in the wake of last month’s explosive TV special about his daughter’s death, granting a rare interview to refute allegations made during the program. In his only Australian radio interview, Ramsey spoke to Meshel Laurie of Melbourne KIIS 101.1’s Matt & Meshel breakfast show saying “It’s kind of a mixed blessing — on the one hand it brings up emotions again, but on the other hand it keeps the case alive, which is important. I don’t want it to be forgotten,” said Ramsey - READ HERE

Special Radio Show In Britain Highlights Swear Words - InRadio, The online radio station for people who work in radio has spent 30 minutes talking about swear words you can’t say on the radio. inRadio’s News Director Stuart Clarkson helped Station Director Roy Martin work out which words you can and can’t say on-air, while talking through the list of expletives. For the first time, the study showed that offensive language is generally seen as more problematic on radio than TV. People said they regarded radio as a more intimate medium, often on in the background at home, or where children could be listening without parental control.

REPORT: Jimmy deCastro Leaving WGN; "Now The Time Is Right For Me To Build Something New”

7

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– One of radio's most beloved executives, Jimmy deCastro, is stepping down after three and a half years as president and general manager of the Tribune Broadcasting news/talk station WGN Chicago report Robert Feder. The veteran media executive said he plans to leave WGN at the end of the month to focus on The Content Factory, his Evanston-based national syndication and new media company, and to expand into the area of sports representation.

“I’ve done everything I can to respect and build on the legacy of this amazing place, and I believe I accomplished everything I set out to do,” deCastro told Feder. “It’s been great fun to work with the incredibly talented people here. Now the time is right for me to go back and build something new.” Larry Wert, president of broadcast media for Tribune Broadcasting, praised his longtime friend: “Jimmy brought his unique leadership, experience and passion to the job every single day, and it made WGN a better, more focused radio station both on and off the air,” he said. “I am eternally grateful to him professionally and personally.” Wert said he has not decided whether to name a successor to deCastro at WGN.

Feder writes that in the latest Nielsen Audio quarterly survey, WGN ranked seventh overall with a 3.8 percent share and cumulative weekly audience of 647,800. Cochran’s morning show on WGN ranked third with a 6.4 share and 335,400 weekly cume.

Opie And Anthony Reunite On The Air After 2 1/2 Years

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– Yesterday marked the first day in two & a half years that Opie and Anthony were on the air again together reports interrobang.com Around 2pm, Opie went to the phones on his new afternoon show and took a call from “HG From Long Island” that turned out to be a call from Cumia, live from his own show. It was the first time the two have spoken since Cumia’s left their former morning show back in 2014. Cumia's spent forty minutes on the show along with Paul Mercurio (who was in studio with Cumia) and Rich Vos (who was in studio with Hughes). The conversation was mostly amicable, and fans remarked that it felt like old times with the exception of a few moments where things seemed like they could get tense.

Both hosts admitted to some problems– Opie saying “I’m in a bad spot, I’ve burned a few bridges,” at various points in the conversation, and Anthony sharing that it’s been a challenge building his network from nothing, and adding “You might have heard some legal wranglings that have been in the news. But we’re getting through them,” referring to his arrest on domestic violence charges in December. Opie and Anthony split up after SiriusXM fired Cumia in July 2014. Anthony started his own podcast network, Compound Radio, after leaving SiriusXM, Gregg “Opie” Hughes stayed on with SiriusXM with the show’s third host, Jim Norton. READ ENTIRE POST HERE

[WATCH] Radio Host Who's Daughter Is Competing On 'The Voice' Says 'Nothing Prepares A DJ Dad Seeing His Daughter On A National Stage'

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– Cliff Casteel, PD/OM and co-host of The Cliff & Katey Morning Show (bottom right) on KTFX/Muscogee, OK. has been in radio for 28 years, which pretty much is all of this season's 'Voice' contestant Maye Thomas' life. Maye is the 27-yr. old daughter of Casteel who tells Jockline, "You should hear her do Stairway to Heaven. Just Wow! She began singing with school musicals in elementary school. It wasn't long before she began to teach herself guitar and would hideaway in her room. I noticed her guitar and vocals were getting progressively better. By high school she put together an all girl band and was rocking school talent shows." Thomas, who lives in Nashville, is very much a capable country artist as well as a rock artist, says her dad, "but her love is pop."

7"I left Las Vegas in 1988 with her in a car seat sitting on top of clothes in my pickup truck,' jokes Casteel. "We had everything we owned in that truck as we left in search of my first radio job. I 7was told to get experience in a small market so, after a blowout south of Hoover Dam and successfully placing the small donut spare on the right front we made the 1,300 mile (on the donut) trip to Oklahoma where I found my first gig in radio."

Casteel says over the course of nearly three decades in radio "I have seen a lot of shows, played lots of music but nothing prepares a DJ Dad for seeing his daughter on a national stage like the Voice for the first time. It was as if I'd never heard a song, never seen a show and I was experiencing it for the first time. It left a motor mouth like me... speechless. I am excited to see how she does on The Voice this season. That's Casteel and family members shown above behind Voice host Carson Daly.

In 2016 It's Radio Stars That Are Making Headlines And Breaking More News Than TV Says Jacobs

7

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– In some of Consultant Fred Jacob's recent posts, he's examined lessons that can be learned from the presidential election about media, entertainment, radio, our culture, and ourselves. "These posts are not meant to take sides, instigate a firestorm in our “comments” section, or agitate our readers," explains Jacobs. He points out that in 2016, it is the stars of radio that are making more headlines and breaking more news than their counterparts on the TV side. Case in point, last week’s Presidential debate. "Conservative talker Sean Hannity and former terrestrial broadcast king Howard Stern were both mentioned during the evening. In each case, the issue was over the hotly contested issue of Donald Trump’s support – or lack thereof – of the Iraq War,' says Jacobs. And while hosts such as Hannity, Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Charlie Sykes (shown above) are most closely associated with conservative politics, Jacobs says "I don’t think there’s any question the radio personality that’s truly yielded the most power and impact this year is Howard Stern.

"Howard’s influence is infinitely more powerful because his guests are never too sure about precisely where he’s going, what he’s thinking, or the questions he’ll be asking," says Jacobs. "As mainstream media pundits now observe, Stern has developed into a top-notch interviewer. "The now-famous, much debated interview with Trump back in 2002 has it all. It starts out as discussion of the health of New York City post-9/11, and then this: Last week – 14 years later – Stern talked about that interview and what it was like being at the center of the debate controversy. Jacobs added, It won’t stop there because news organizations continue to cull through Stern’s archives, discovering other candid quotes Trump has made while a guest on the show." READ FULL BLOG HERE

MOTION: Charlie Sykes To End His Radio Show, Brandmeier Ending National Show Early Next Year

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– Popular conservative host Charlie Sykes announced on Tuesday that, after more than two decades on the air, he is stepping down at the end of this year from his show on WTMJ/Milwaukee to "pursue new opportunities." According to TMJ4, Sykes said "This is not a decision that I made either lightly or recently and it was not driven by this year’s political season. Earlier this year, Sykes made national headlines when he had an explosive interview with Trump. “Before you called into my show, did you know that I’m a #NeverTrump guy?” Sykes asked Trump a few days before the Wisconsin primary. “That I didn’t know,” Trump replied. Trump ended up losing the primary to Ted Cruz.

-- A bit further up the road, Jonathon Brandmeier announced on his website that he'll be ending his syndicated radio deal with Westwood One in early 2017. "They decided not to renew and I completely agree with that decision. I truly believe this is the best move for all involved. It was only a matter of time, and there are no hard feelings. When I was offered this shot at attempting to "change talk radio", I couldn't resist. However, I quickly realized talk radio is not ready to be "unhinged". Still, I don't regret the risk. I met some good people at Westwood One, we picked up new listeners from across this great nation of Murica, and I realized what has always driven me in this business was missing: the spirit of JUST HAVIN' FUN. It's time for me to get back to that. We plan to honor our agreement and continue on the air until it's officially over - or until they literally pull the plug.

KEVIN WEATHERLY: 'The Future Of Radio Looks Brighter Than Ever'

THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– Forbes contributing writer Steve Baltin says "When it comes to radio talk in the music industry, these days most of the attention is focused on the major streaming services or aggregates. He add, that old-fashioned terrestrial radio, those AM and FM stations in the local markets are considered obsolete. But Kevin Weatherly, Senior Vice President of Programming at CBS Radio who just inked a multi-year extension with CBS Radio, disagrees strongly.

“I think the future looks brighter than ever, it’s a really exciting time,” Weatherly says. “The other thing is with the way technology has blown up the last 10 years and the way people consume music and discover music it’s all changing so rapidly. And to try to stay a step ahead of that is something else that is really exciting.”

Discussing his latest extension with CBS, Weatherly says, “First of all I have no other skills,” he says laughing. “I love what I do, I wake up every day, I think I have the greatest job in radio.. I’m as excited today as I was 25 years ago.” READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

The annual effort aims to provide every active service member deployed outside the United States with a handwritten Thank You letter on Thanksgiving Day. “This is an ambitious goal, but that’s why we need the nation’s help,” says Bert Weiss, host of The Bert Show. “We know how important it is to make sure the sacrifices made by the men and women in our military and their families are recognized which is why we want every single person deployed outside the United States to receive a handwritten thank you letter from home to open at mail call on Thanksgiving.”
