Station Apologizes For Controversial Float; Show Director Exits

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 26TH, 2012 –– G105/Raleigh's "Showgram" headed by 20-yr market icon, Bob Dumas is certainly no strangers to controversy. On the weekend before Thanksgiving they stirred things up again during the WRAL Christmas Parade with its entry of a black man dressed in a skirt with fairy wings, strapped to a harness on the back of a tow truck which was described as "Tyrone the Black Christmas Fairy." According to Brooke Cain / The News & Observer, Dick Harlow, market manager for G105 owner Clear Channel Media, apologized last week to the Greater Raleigh Merchants Association, which puts on the parade, saying "Some very poor judgment was used .. It was meant to be a harmless stunt, and it was never our intention to offend anyone." Michael "Breeze" Rackoff (shown far right), who recently arrived by way of Charlotte's Ace & TJ, said he questioned the concept of the Christmas fairy when Dumas first proposed it in a staff meeting. Last week, Breeze departed the show after just a few months. The man suspended from the truck, Tyrone Dunston, is not a Showgram employee but is a longtime fan of the show.

Gene Baxter Returns To The Air In Time For Miss Double D-Cember Pageant

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 26TH, 2012 –– Not even a kidney transplant could keep Gene (Bean) Baxter, one half of the venerable Kevin & Bean Show on KROQ/LA, from returning to the air today following his donation to engineer Scott Mason on Nov. 13. Of course, their infamous Miss Double D-cember Pageant may have provided some added stimulus. According to Gary Lycan's OC Register column, he reports Bean was released from the hospital Nov. 17. He also said he wanted to be back in time for the Miss Double D-cember pageant. As reported, CBS-TV had exclusive access to the operation, giving Bean the opportunity to watch the removal of his own kidney on "CBS This Morning." Bean joked at KROQ's website: "went down the hallway to visit Scott .. I went down to check on my other kidney.' We know how poorly he's looked in recent years. It's unbelievable. The transformation... he looks 10 years younger, smiling, laughing, happy... You guys always make fun of me for being a robot not a unicorn, but I teared up when I saw him. It was emotional to see how great he looked." Meanwhile, KROQ Miss Double D-cember pageant takes place Nov. 30 at the Slidebar in Fullerton. And if you must, CHECK OUT FINALISTS HERE (Hide the children, first).

Apparently, Minaj wasn't there to just talk about American Idol, she wanted her songs played. “Why don’t you have the songs cued up though? I wanna hear ‘High School’, I wanna hear ‘Hell Yeah’, I wanna hear ‘I’m Legit’, I wanna hear ‘Up in Flames’. Y’all don’t even know these songs ... Those are the songs that I would like y’all to play. I don’t understand why I’m coming to radio and y’all don’t even have my songs ready ... That’s the main focus of the kid coming to the radio ... When the kid comes to the radio, the kid comes to hear her songs on the radio!” Then, as if she wasn't already fired up enough, co-host Angela Yee admitted she hadn’t seen her music video:“Freedom” “How are y’all on radio, especially if you know an artist is about to come up to your show and you know, she just put out a video" Minaj added: "If y’all gonna interview me, at least give me the respect to do some research prior to the interview. I’m not here for your entertainment ... all you want to talk about is some damn American Idol ... How do you not watch a video of an artist that’s coming on your show? Of the single? ... It’s fake and y’all not prepared. If you’re gonna support me then you’re gonna watch stuff and prepare yourself and ask me relevant questions to what I’m promoting right now. WATCH VIDEO HERE

Exercising six days a week and eating well Monday through Friday. As he says, "I don't want to get back to heavy again." He said back then, Zach Thomas, from the Dolphins told him about the Miami Dolphins' Cycling Challenge. "It's to raise money for cancer. MOVERS/WAKERS: Dave & Chuck The Freak Show Exit 89X

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 26TH, 2012 –– Dave Hunter and Charles Urquhart, known affectionately as 89X/Winsor/Detroit's Dave and Chuck the Freak morning show, posted on their Facebook page last week that the show was history. “Unfortunately, we can’t go into detail, but as of today the Dave and Chuck “the Freak” show is no longer a part of the 89X line up. We greatly enjoyed our time at 89X for over a decade, made some great friends, and are so thankful we got to be a part of your lives every morning. According to The Winsor Star, Eric Proksch, vice president/general manager of Bell Media Radio Windsor Detroit, the company that owns 89X, said today that the duo decided to leave the station for another gig. That's the radio business." Proksch said Cal Cagno is the interim program director and will do the morning show this week.

KHJ: Inside Boss Radio, Now $9.30 In eBook, Not $93

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 26TH, 2012 –– Several years ago when Ron Jacobs, one of the famed PDs of the iconic '60's powerhouse KHJ/LA, first published "KHJ: Inside Boss Radio" a 455-page book which contained numerous memos, surveys and behind-the-scenes stories about its legendary jocks, stunts, etc. at KHJ, he offered it at the whopping price of $93. Reportedly, Jacobs now admits regretting the price and has now put it out again, in digital form, for $9.30 as an e-book, at Amazon. The 'Boss' format, conceived by the late Bill Drake, exploded nationally and got its early start at KFRC San Francisco and KHJ/LA. While many suggest the format was radio's first attempt to put a bridle on deejay banter and place the emphasis on music, it actually accentuated the era of superjocks. Among the many included Robert W. Morgan, Charlie Tuna, The Real Don Steele, Sam Riddle, Humble Harve and numerous others. ORDER HERE

Artie Lange All Smiles And Back To Work After Back Procedure [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 21ST, 2012 –– Not sure whether it was the back relief or.... Okay, we won't go there but either way, this photo tweeted by DirecTV's Nick and Artie Show co-host Artie Lang caught our attention. He tweeted: "About to get sedated for a back procedure. Sweet!" As it turns out he was there to take care of some serious back problems. Fortunately, he was back on the show yesterday and was, not surprisingly, joking about the nurses and the epidural. As expected, the attached photo served as great fodder for DiPaolo who said it made him look like an Italian Grandmother. "Along with the salt and pepper beard," joked Lange. Since September 2011, he has co-hosted "The Nick and Artie Show" with Nick DiPaolo. LISTEN TO AUDIO HERE (11.2)

Nicki Minaj Teams With Hot 97 For Turkey Giveaway

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 21ST, 2012 –– HOT 97 partnered with Nicki Minaj to give back to the community she came from for this Thanksgiving! This week she joined HOT 97’s Hip Hop Has Heart Foundation at her alma mater PS 45 in Queens to give current students free Thanksgiving turkeys. Over 600 attendees, including students, parents, and faculty of PS 45, joined HOT 97 Monday evening to welcome the New York rapper back to her home turf. Nicki certainly did not disappoint her Barbz! Nicki took photos with all of the kids and their families. Minaj moved to Queens at age 5, and has claimed it her home since. And, just to be safe, NYPD was there to add a little protection. Probably not from the kids, but perhaps PETA once they check out her wardrobe. Just sayin.

TSBC IV RECAP: Talk Radio Must Get Beyond Just Politics; Can Only Grow By Reaching Out To Different Audiences

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 21ST, 2012 –– During last weekend's 4th Annual Talk Show Boot Camp co-presented by Don Anthony's Talentmasters and Gabe Hobb's Media, there's was much discussion regarding the need for more diversity of topics by talk hosts, if not more diversity of the format as well. Carolyn Gilbert from NuVoodoo Media Services presented brand new research findings (October, 2012) that added new data to support that thinking. From 1,000 18-54s in 48 PPM markets offered data suggesting there's a great opportunity for the less strident, somewhat conservative audience that goes beyond political talk."It's the economy, stupid,' and issues that touch people every day that can help move us beyond hard-core conservative-talk and help assure the format's future. There's not much that your local station or market can do about what's going on in Washington," said Gilbert. "But issues involving infrastructure, safety, how we live our lives and pocketbook issues (!!!!) that are locally-focused and touch our listeners in a very personal way are right in the sweet spot to develop our audiences." Commenting on the weekend's discussion, All Access' Perry Michael Simon said "I'll say that I was encouraged that more people in the room now recognize that talk radio can't sit still and can only grow by reaching out to different audiences -- younger, less doctrinaire -- with more unique and unpredictable programming. But it's one thing for hosts and programmers to know that and another for group heads and CEOs to write the checks for it. There's no patience to allow talk programming to grow -- KOGO just pulled its FM simulcast after a year with little or no marketing -- and the PPMs still favor music-heavy formats. That being said, the research shown by Carolyn Gilbert and Fred Jacobs and Arbitron and the Topic Pulse team (at TSBC)indicates that there are very large audiences waiting for programming that resonates for them, and there was a larger percentage of people in that room that got it than I've seen in the past. Rather than dwell on the negative, I'll take that as a positive. The next step is to convince the bosses to give more talk and news radio a fighting chance. A year with no marketing isn't that," said Simon
