END OF AN ERA: Farley Bids Farewell To WTOP

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 30TH, 2013 –– It was a festive send-off to WTOP's legendary Jim Farley last week as broadcasters from all over the country assembled at the Newseum in Wash. DC to pay tribute and following Farley's 17 yr. reign at radio's most successful station. According to wtop.com, Farley is retiring after 17 years. Known for his one-liners that have inadvertently become his legacy. Sayings, such as, "Get it right, then get it first," have become the mantras in the "nerve center' newsroom (including its own special glass cleaner - shown). "It's what 7I've been preaching: Radio is the medium of the here and now. You've got to reach out through the microphone and grab people by the lapel and say, 'Hey buddy listen to me!' It's storytelling. It's not reporting, it's storytelling," Farley says. Before moving to Washington, Farley spent two decades at ABC- and NBC-owned radio network operations in New York, and started his career as a copyboy at New York City's all-news radio station WINS. Farley officially retires at the end of December, but will remain a consultant for two years after his retirement. WTOP, owned by Hubbard Radio LLC, had $64.6 million in revenue last year, the top-billing radio station in the nation. PHOTOS/wtop

REPORT: Kraddick's Organ Damage From Cancer May Have Contributed To His Heart Failure

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 30TH, 2013 –– Among the top stories of 2013 will undoubtedly be the unexpected passing of legendary morning host, Kidd Kraddick. Following his death in late July, the final toxicology report stated that he passed from a combination of arteriosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, but in a recent D Magazine article, it stated Kraddick's cancer treatments (chemotherapy and radiation) caused organ damage, which might also have contributed to his untimely death. This, despite the fact that he was declared "cancer-free" years before his passing. Kraddick's initial autopsy, released by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's office, declared that Kraddick died from an enlarged heart, blocked arteries and an irregular heartbeat. As Jockline Daily reported earlier this month (JD 12/19) D magazine confirmed the 53-year-old nationally syndicated radio host, was diagnosed with cancer years prior to his death last summer. According to the report, Kraddick, who passed away "unexpectedly" following a charity golf event in New Orleans on July 27, had been suffering from cancer since 2009.

Larry Lujack 'Never Really Considered Himself A Disc-Jockey'

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 20TH, 2013 –– Rick Kaempfer, the former producer/turned author & publisher ("Records Truly Is My Middle Name) shared with Jockline Daily his last interview with Lujack that he wrote for the Illinois Entertainer. Among other observations, Lujack opened up about his arrival to Chicago, The lively WLS/WCFL battle, plus the worst time in his career (when WCFL changed to beautiful music). He also revealed some of his own radio influences. "I think the Real Don Steele(below) is the best pure rock and roll disc jockey of all-time," Lujack said. "...That guy was incredible. I never really considered myself a disc jockey—and I didn’t imitate him, but he was the very best. He was like Landecker or Brandmeier; pure high energy. I didn’t do that kind of radio, but I admired how good he was. The best thing that has ever been on the radio though, in my opinion, was Paul Har7vey. We used to ride up on the elevator every morning together—we got to work around the same time. He was the best that ever was and the best that ever will be. He was a brilliant writer, and had an unbelievably fantastic delivery," said Lujack. After the interview, Rick asked if he could send him a photo to accompany the article. He sent me a recent photo his wife took of him, wearing an Elvis shirt, along with a copy of Clark Weber's book about radio because I told him that I didn't have a copy of it. His note said: "Tell Landecker that I loved his book but I didn't need to read about the catheter in his *ick." PHOTO/Rick Kaemfer READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

LANDECKER: Didn't Know Lujack Was Such A Huge Elvis Fan [AUDIO]

“You don’t know anything about music, you… Phil… a… del… phia… ***K!”

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 20TH, 2013 –– Speaking of Landecker, there are many wonderful memories of Larry Lujack in his book "Records Truly Is My Middle Name." In case you're planning to read it over the holidays, please proceed to next story. If not, here is one of our favorites: John wrote: "..We were in a jock meeting, shooting the *hit, and someone asked the seemingly innocuous question: “Who was more important to music — Elvis or the Beatles?” “I don’t think Elvis was that great,” I said. Well, I had no idea that Larry Lujack was a huge Elvis fan, but I found out pretty fast. Larry glared at me. And then he nearly spit the words at me, in his patented Lujack delivery. “You don’t know anything about music, you… Phil… a… del… phia… FUCK!” Years later I was at the station when the news came across the wire that Elvis had died (August 16, 1977). The first thing that crossed my mind was that nobody in the world would want to know this information more than Larry Lujack. (When someone calls you a Philadelphia fuck for not loving Elvis, you have a tendency to remember that sort of thing.) So, I called him at home, and his wife answered. “Judy,” I said, “It’s John Landecker. I’ve got something very important to tell Larry. Trust me; he’s going to want to know about this.” “OK, hang on,” she said. A few seconds later Larry growled on the phone. “Yeah?” “Larry, it’s me, John Landecker. Elvis is dead.” “Who cares?” he growled again. “I’m taking a nap.” Rick Kaempfer was able to track down the audio of John & Larry reliving that moment, 30 years later. THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 20TH, 2013 –– Toby Foster’s Tweet got him suspended from Radio Sheffield. Toby took to the social network on Wednesday evening after a meeting with his manager, in which he said he ‘pretty much got sacked’. He also made reference to the Danny Baker incident of 2012 but said there was ‘No Danny Baker type rant here. In an email to staff, Head of BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Helen Thomas said: “I want to make it clear the BBC does not condone the offensive language used by Toby in his Twitter feed which was directed at a member of staff. I have met with Toby today and he has offered a full apology to his colleagues and the public for the comments he has made.” Toby took over the breakfast show on BBC Radio Sheffield in 2007 after a schedule shuffle at the station.
