Iowa Host Relieved After Avoiding Deportation

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 11TH, 2015 –– A Mason City radio host says it's like the "weight of the world" was lifted off his shoulders after learning he could stay in the U.S. following a potential deportation to Canada. James Shaman of 103.7 The Fox tells the Mason City Globe Gazette he's learned federal prosecutors have agreed to settle his case. The former Manitoba, Canada native says he should get his green card back soon. As Jockline first reported last December, Shaman e came to the U.S. with his 7parents when he was 2. He says a record check over three years ago at a border crossing alerted officials to a 1993 burglary conviction. He says he has turned his life around since then. Federal law allows legal foreign residents to be deported for a number of criminal convictions. The threat of deportation had been looming over Shaman for 3½ years. Shaman's case was going to be heard in April. A few days ago, he learned that might not be necessary as officials intended to let him stay. The order still has to be signed by a judge, but Shaman is ecstatic. He told his teen daughter first: Had he been deported, she would have stayed in the United States and they would have been separated. His co-workers at The Fox and other North Iowa Broadcasting stations were excited to hear the good news. Some had written letters of support to convince officials to let Shaman stay.

Former Host Sentenced Nearly Six-Years In Prison For Fraud

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 11TH, 2015 –– Former WIND-AM 560/Chicago radio host and attorney, Kathleen Niew was sentenced to nearly 6 years after stealing $2.3 million from clients, reports The Chicago Tribune, Niew was sentenced for fraud after stealing more than $2.3 million from clients. Prosecutors said Niew, then an attorney, led an local couple to believe she would hold the money for them for use at closings on commercial real estate deals but then misappropriated the money for herself, financing purchases of gold mining operations around the globe in an ill-fated scheme to garner hefty finder's fees. U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber said Niew's risky investments were tantamount to ""putting it all on some long shot" at the racetrack. Prosecutors had sought a 10-year prison term for Niew, who had pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud last June. Before her indictment, she was a self-styled real estate and probate law guru known for her Saturday morning show on WIND-AM 560. The judge said Niew's betrayal of her clients played a part in his decision to sentence her to five years and 10 months in prison. He also ordered her to pay restitution of $2.34 million. Niew, rose to address the judge, asking for forgiveness from both Leinenweber and the victims. "It's my fault that the money is gone," Niew said. "What I thought was taking place was not what was taking place. I regret every action that was taken." PHOTO/screengrab

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 11TH, 2015 –– Pop star Lorde's mom, Sonja Yelich, was none too pleased w7hen New Zealand's Thane Kirby, morning host along with Kara (below), on George FM showed up at her doorstep where she claims he attempted to film her pop star daughter. According to The NZ Herald, Yelich calledv the incident "intrusive" and "upsetting" in her latest post on Instagram. "It was invasive and upsetting to have @georgefmnz's @thanekirby on our property and at our front door yesterday morning rxecording me for his breakfast programme," she wrote. "He had another man with him who videoed me while @thanekirby recorded me on his cellphone. He could see that I was upset and yet he STILL broadcast me live on his programme." In a statement released to the Herald, George FM said the segment was intended to be "fun" but admitted it was the wrong thing to do. It said there was "no plan or intention to film Lorde". "Knocking on Lorde's door was an off-the-cuff moment of live radio intended to be light hearted and fun. There was no malicious intent, but George recognizes the moment was inappropriate and ill-advised. "Apologies were made to Sonja Yelich and her family yesterday, both on air and in a formal letter."

NPR'S JARL MOHN: Broadcast Radio Is The Cockroach Of Media. You Can't Kill It

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 10TH, 2015 –– NPR CEO Jarl Mohn, longtime broadcast radio's Lee Masters, must be exuding a lot of panache these days. On the heels of monster successes such as 'Serial' and the recent blockbuster 'Invisibilia,' he has a lot to be happy about. In a lengthy 7interview with current.org's Ben Mook, when responding to a prediction that Vivian Schiller had made when she was NPR’s CEO, Mook quoted her as saying the Internet radio would be replacing terrestrial radio within ten years. 'We’re now five years into that decade. What’s your prediction about the future of terrestrial vs. Internet radio? Mohn: Broadcast radio is the cockroach of media. You can’t kill it. You can’t make it go away, it just gets stronger and more resilient. That doesn’t mean that I see digital radio as a passing fad. It’s for real. I’m a huge Spotify user. I think it’s a great service, but I use broadcast too." With regard to commercial radio, Mohn said, "It’s suffering right now, in part because of the incredible consolidation and cost-cutting that has occurred in the business. There’s less room for creativity, innovation and local relevance. Most often, it’s not live .. Over-the-air commercial radio is not as good as it can be." Mohn added, 'We are in the golden age of the spoken word, whether it’s about news, culture or science. Some of it’s going to be on broadcast, and some will be digital. It’s not an either-or. The radio listeners and digital users aren’t making either-or choices. Mohn’s background includes managing and owning radio stations, working as a program director, managing VH1 and MTV, and holding the chief executive job at E! Entertainment. Consultant Walter Sabo, a friend of Mohn, told Jockline, “Jarl Mohn is an amazing man. He grew from progressive rock DJ and programmer at WLRS in the 1970’s to a formidable media visionary. I would pay close attention to what he says about NPR and its appeal." READ COMPLETE ARTICLE HERE

First-Ever, Live On-Stage Focus Group Of Talk Listeners Reveals Key Insights

While there was an overall feeling that talk radio could do some things better, there was a clear love of the product

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 10TH, 2015 –– NuVoodoo Media Services has released the findings of a live focus group of talk radio listeners conducted on stage at the Talk Radio Boot Camp on Saturday, February 7, at the W Hotel in Buckhead/Atlanta. Carolyn Gilbert, President of NuVoodoo Media Services and Leigh Jacobs, Executive Vice President, Research Analysis for NuVoodoo Media Services, conducted a live focus group of talk radio listeners in front of a room of talk radio managers, consultants, programmers and hosts. Panelists were men and women, aged 40-54, who were active talk radio listeners from Atlanta who were 7comfortable speaking in front of a room full of people. There was no mirror or video camera between respondents and viewers. Gilbert and Jacobs moderated the panel that later took live questions from the industry heavyweights in attendance.

The eight panelists represented a balance of Conservatives and Liberals, but even the Liberals admitted to spending time with the more Conservative-leaning talk hosts. Conversely, the Conservatives in attendance were aware of offerings on NPR and several referenced shows they listen to regularly on the local NPR station. While those in the room reaped the full benefit of experiencing the comments and insights shared by the respondents, several themes lit up the session: Among the takeaways, many complained about too much political talk. Others mentioned the boredom of a string of callers who do nothing more than agree with the host. While there was an overall feeling that talk radio could do some things better, there was a clear love of the product and a passion for myriad variations of the talk format. For more information about these findings, contact Carolyn Gilbert at NuVoodoo Media Services at 888.9VOODOO (888.986.6366) and at cg@nuvoodoo.com.
