BLOG: Is Donald Trump Impacting Radio Ratings?

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 21ST, 2017 –– Jacobs Media's Fred Jacobs writes in his latest blog that his company has been conducting one-on-one interviews with Millennials, as well as radio news listeners. These disparate groups are telling us the same thing; interest in politics is driving an increased interest and focus on the news, whether they like it or not. He adds that all of this may be changing the media usage equation. And of course, that has an effect – both good and bad – on radio ratings.

7A recent analysis in the Columbia Journalism Review by Jed Gottlieb suggests the President’s impact on news and our attention spans is like a “black hole,” sucking the oxygen out of the media room – TV, movies, radio, music, and whatever else is in the way. Gottlieb points out that even big music news stories – the Grammy awards and Beyoncé’s pregnancy – have been overshadowed by incessant Trump coverage.

7For News/Talk radio and radio talk shows in general, Jacobs says there’s no problem here. In fact, the only question revolves around how to keep up with the frenzied pace of each day’s events, including weekends. -- For music radio, it a very different challenge. The political maelstrom that’s been roiling for months has only intensified since the inauguration. That leaves stations that specialize in formats like Country, Classic Rock, and Hot AC with an attention-deficit disorder as their audiences are distracted by the politics of today. Comedian/Talk Host Joe Piscopo Mulls Run For New Jersey Governor - No Joke!

I've Never Been More Serious About Anything In My Life

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 21ST, 2017 –– 970 The Answer New York's Joe Piscopo is considering a run for New Jersey Governor reports The New York Times. "I'm very serious about it. I've never been more serious about anything in my life," Piscopo said. Mr. Piscopo pointed to Mr. Trump’s victory as upending the notion of a candidate needing political experience. It was on the Trump campaign trail that Mr. Piscopo started to seriously consider running, saying he received encouragement from Reince Priebus, then chairman of the Republican Party and now Mr. Trump’s chief of staff, and from the former New York City mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

Piscopo says Donald Trump's win shows that someone with no political experience has a chance, he told The Times. “Joe Piscopo obviously goes into this with a whole lot of name recognition,” said Ashley Koning, the director at the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers. “Whether that turns into actual approval and support among New Jersey residents and New Jersey voters, that’s another story, but I think there’s a lot of ground that every candidate has to cover.” READ STORY HERE

STUDY: Most At Work Listening Goes To Radio

7

JUST OVER HALF OF AT WORK LISTENING GOES TO RADIO THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 21ST, 2017 – Just over half of at-work listening to radio is just one of the statistics that will be released this Thursday and the next batch of data from the Alan Burns and Associates/Strategic Solutions Research national study of 2000 women. Alan Burns noted that three out of four women (74%) who work full-time listen to music while they work. “40% of them listen to over the air radio, and another 14% listen to the online stream of an AM/FM radio station.

Pureplay music streamers now account for 21% of women’s at work music choice.” Counting YouTube, 85% of all women now listen to a pureplay at some point during the typical week, according to the study. “Custom music streamers online have become ubiquitous,” said Strategic EVP Hal Rood, “but radio has some terrific strengths versus pureplays that we will detail on Thursday.” REGISTERE HERE

BLOG: Why Isn't Podcasting Bigger Asks Steve Goldstein?

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 21ST, 2017 –– Amplifi Media's Steve Goldstein answers in his latest blog: it is becoming bigger. But the lens needs to be adjusted properly to see the growth. Music and spoken word are generally presented together as “audio.” Podcasting, is a subset of spoken word. So, let’s separate.

As one might guess, Americans spend more time listening to music than spoken audio. Music can be consumed in the background, while speech usually requires the ability to ‘lean-forward’ and listen with intent. For the overwhelming majority of people, the available time for the involved listening that speech (Talk shows, podcasts, sports, newscasts, etc.) requires is significantly less than what is available for music.

Podcasting has quickly taken 10% of the speech-audio market. Importantly, that number rises sharply when focusing on millennial and teen listeners. AMONG 13-34 YEAR-OLDS, FULLY 29% OF SPEECH GOES TO PODCASTING Broadcast radio, with its hundred-year head start, is the biggest player in the space --- talk radio, news, and sports stations - and satellite radio is a factor. But podcasting is rapidly transforming the spoken word space from its historical form as a river of content that listeners dip their cups into as it flows along, to an on-demand medium that provides the exact content they are seeking at the time they wish to listen. 7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 21ST, 2017 ––Gregg 'Opie' Hughes said his job as an on-air personality could be in jeopardy after he breached the King of All Media's sealed-off wing of the New York City building. According to The Daily Mail, Hughes said his fate with SiriusXM could be in the hands of his longtime rival, Howard Stern after he convinced a cleaning lady to grant him access to Stern's sealed-off quarters at the company's New York City headquarters.

Hughes who live-streamed on YouTube told the cleaning lady that he had forgotten something inside the area, to which she granted him access to Stern's facility. In a Facebook post, Hughes said "‘I feel horrible about the cleaning lady and it wasn't right to get her involved,' noting that SiriusXM officials told him that 'her job was never in jeopardy. Security quickly caught wind of the breach and asked Hughes and comedian Sherrod Small to leave. Hughes said he was 'yelled at for 45 straight minutes' by SiriusXM’s president & chief content officer Scott Greenstein in the wake of the security breach. SEE MORE HERE

STUDY: Radio’s Numbers Lower In Connected Cars, But Still Dominant Choice Of Women

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 20TH, 2017 –– In our continued peek at Alan Burns and Associates/Strategic Solutions Research study of 2000 women, the latest news shows that AM/FM radio is still the dominant audio choice in those connected cars. “Most women now know they can connect to the Internet through their phone or the built-in dashboard entertainment system,” said Strategic EVP Hal Rood. “Yet those women continue to listen to radio most. 71% of them listen to radio most in their car. The components of that are 65% to the over the air signal of a local AM/FM station, 4% to the online stream a local station, and 2% to the stream of a station in another city. By comparison, only 14% choose to listen to a pure play streamer most, and 6% to satellite radio.” In comparison, the numbers from “What Women Want – 2017” show that among women who can’t or don’t know they can connect to the Internet in their cars, the “listen most” sources are 81% to AM/FM radio over the air, and 2% to radio streams.

“Radio’s numbers are lower in connected cars, but not to the degree I think most people expected,” said Burns founder Alan Burns. “In aggregate, that’s a loss of only about 15% for radio in the connected car. That’s significant, but certainly not a disaster.” The Burns/Strategic study results are being released in a series of four free webinars. People Spend More Time Listening To Stations That Engage Them Through Social Says NuVoodoo

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 20TH, 2017 –– Last week’s North American Broadcasters Association Symposium, held at NAB headquarters in Washington, showed off coming enhancements in digital technology and connected cars, which will allow instantaneous feedback from listeners while they’re driving. These possibilities come about as connected cars learn to communicate with: • Other cars (for accident avoidance). • Manufacturers for service and performance updates. • Service providers (Filld, for example, a service that brings gas to your vehicle; Bentley is offering this service to people who buy their vehicles as an option, where the service is available.).

7NuVoodoo's Carolyn Gilbert & Leigh Jacobs (L) participated in a panel about building radio audiences in a world that includes new media choices for listeners. An interesting perspective on Social Media was provided by Lux (above), the morning host on Emmis’ KNOU (Now 96.3) in St. Louis. As a Millennial who’s spent her career with the Emmis cluster in St. Louis, Lux has deep experience in station promotions, but is relatively new to on-air work. For her, Social Media allows an extension of her show, from live streaming after her show and at station events and appearances, to using different Social Media platforms to tell stories surrounding her show. She knows instinctively what NuVoodoo Research data shows: People spend more time listening to stations that engage with them in Social Media.

Here’s a large market morning host who got her job because she understands listeners, having seen them up close and in person at station appearances. Organically, she differentiates between the push of legacy media and the increasing preference of today’s consumers to pull what they want at their convenience. Frankly, they’re better qualifications for being on the radio than the old days when being able to slip cue a record and back-time to the news was required - Leigh Jacobs.

[WATCH] American Idol Clears Hurdle For Return

7

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 20TH, 2017 –– Seems like ever since Fox TV's American Idol left tube and ended one of radio's most beloved and engaged series, it's been followed by a steady stream of rumors hinting at its possible return. The Hollywood Reporter reports 'It isn't definitely coming back to television, but the producers of the singing competition show have overcome a major hurdle for its return. On Thursday, U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge Stuart Bernstein blessed an amended agreement between 19 Entertainment and Fremantle Media Limited. According to court papers, the agreement "memorializes the parties’ intention to re-launch American Idol on American television by seeking a new license agreement with a broadcaster, network or other platform subject to various terms and conditions."

Although the parties have come together on reviving American Idol, there's still massive litigation pending. Should NBC in fact revive series, it will be interesting to see how it manages alongside its other competition blockbuster, 'The Voice.'
