Jeff & Jer's Sablan & Cain Invade The Oscars

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– Proving once again that The Oscars' security can't be outwitted by one of radios' most top producers, Little Tommy Sablan, our unofficial correspondent at last night's event, and his lovely partner, Laura Cain, somehow landed near front row seats at the annual event. To prove they made it in safely, Tommy passed along a number of photos of them including a shot of them seated right behind Hugh Jackman and Robert Dinero. Laura even snared a pic of her with the legendary Jack Nicholson. Living up to his executive producer roots, Tommy did manage a bit of self-aggrandizement by providing 7himself with his own star on the legendary walk of fame (right). Big night for Seth MacFarland, too, wouldn't you say?

Holy Schnitt! New Attorney Added In MJ's Legal Drama

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– You've gotta believe, casting directors in Hollywood are keeping an eye on this one and now the plot thickens ever more. In the continuing legal drama between Tampa radio rivals Todd "MJ" Schnitt vs Bubba The Love Sponge Clem, Schnitt has now brought in a new Lawyer, according to The Tampa Bay 7New. Exiting the case is Phillip Campbell (shown left) victim of the alleged drunken driving setup and his partner, Jonathan J. Ellis. Entering the case will be Wil Florin. On Jan. 30, jurors found that Clem not guilty of all charges, but Scnitt's former legal team then filed an appeal. Meanwhile, just in case this does indeed end up in a mini-series, may we suggest actor/comedian, Jason Alexander, as a possibility for Schnitt. If you have others possible cast members, submit you photos and suggestions. HERE

CRS Kicks Off This Week: Country Taking Aim At Younger Audience

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– As hundreds descend on Nashville this week for the annual Country Radio Seminar, younger demos will be top on mind. On the heels of WSIX-FM Nashville just launched the Bobby Bones Show, PD Michael Bryan tells tennessean.com, “We’re targeting the show to the 20- and 30-somethings, which hasn’t been done in the country format.” WSIX Program Director Michael Bryan said. “If you look at the artists, what we’re doing is a reflection of what’s popular. We have to do this if we’re going to raise a new generation of country listeners.” The agenda reflects that same sentiment with one of its sessions "Is 18-34 the new 25-54?” 7Twenty years ago, the topic might not have generated the same level of interest, said Sean Ross, vice president of music and programming at Edison Research. “There wasn’t any music that a self-respecting teen would have been interested in .. There wasn’t as much tempo .. There wasn’t as much of a rock edge.” Ross adds "There also wasn’t a Taylor Swift. Or a Jason Aldean. Or a Lady Antebellum." Consultant Jaye Albright says radio programmers should take a cue from census data, which indicate that today’s 16- to 33-year-olds, estimated at about 78 million people, as a group are not only larger than the generation immediately preceding them, but also larger than the leading edge of baby boomers. Jacobs Media Announces Smart Launch

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 20123 –– A recent post in the JacoBlog about the launch of Nash FM and its difficulty in corralling its social media accounts has led to the debut of a new Jacobs Media service, Smart Launch™. Spearheaded by social media strategist, Lori Lewis (shown), the company will offer a 30-day program to ensure that new station debuts go off seamlessly – socially. It will be available to broadcasters launching new stations as well as to those defending against a debut from another station in the market. According to Lewis, “I am excited to be able to work with companies to make sure that everything’s in place socially on Day One. I’ll then personally work with a station’s social accounts to welcome fans, connect with new listeners, handle competitive threats, and take full advantage of the social sphere.” Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs notes, “Radio pays a lot of attention to the meat and potatoes of a launch – testing the music, production, sales support, and marketing. But too often, the all-important social assets are on a back-burner or not accounted for at all. Smart Launch™ will give new stations an important advantage.” Broadcasters interested in Smart Launch™ can contact Paul Jacobs for more information – 248-353-9030.

REPORT: Radios' Star Being Dimmed By The Internet

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– Interesting, if not a sobering article in mysanantonio.com on the impact of internet radio. "Since the turn of the century, the onslaught of new technology has contributed significantly to the dimming commercial radio's star," says writer Nolan Hicks. "It was about that time that the first major satellite radio service launched, offering subscribers the opportunity to listen to hundreds of channels of programming for a fee. Apple created the iPod, which popularized the digital music player and allowed CD owners to put their music on one device. Tim Westergren then founded Pandora Media. And, of course, now that it isn't limited to just computers, things have gotten even more complicated. The ability to stream music from the phone in your pocket — using Pandora or one of its competitors — represents the biggest challenge to commercial radio that the technological revolution has wrought, said Larry Rosin, president of Edison Research, a media research provider ... Pandora is clearly stealing time from commercial radio music stations, primarily among people under 35 years old,” Rosin said. Some on the terrestrial radio side aren't convinced: “We've seen them complement each other,” said Ezra Kucharz, president of Local Digital Media at CBS. As an example, he said someone might listen to 1010 WINS — an all-news radio station in New York City — on their car radio on their way to work, and then use the web stream to listen to the station on their computer on the job. “They're not cannibalizing each other,” he said. “If anything, it's growing the overall pot.” READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

POWERED BY PURTAN: Detroit's Radiothon Raises $1,364.122 For Salvation Army

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– Annual to radio's best bud, Art Vuolo, the annual Salvation Army Radiothon in Detroit was started 26 years ago by Dick Purtan at (then) WCZY. Those calls became WKQI and later, when Dick segued to WOMC the Radiothon shifted over to that station. After his retirement, the event was picked up by The Great Voice of the Great Lakes WJR-AM. The last two of the three Radiothons on WJR brought Purtan out of retirement and last Friday in one day, on one station, in 16 hours, they raised an amazing $1,364,122! Even in Detroit's crippled economy, Purtan said "that is impressive." The Bed and Bread Club in the Motor City provides food and shelter for the hungry and the homeless.(shown L-R - Purtan, Frank Beckmann and WJR's Kevin Metheny)

Station Prevails In Lawsuit Against "Donkey Show" By Former Host

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2013 –– It took a jury less than two hours to reject all claims in a lawsuit filed by a former host who claimed he was forced to quit following intense verbal abuse on its afternoon show, “The Donkey Show.” According to The Register Guard, Michael Fleming had charged that he was subjected to "vitriolic and demeaning verbal abuse" while serving as an unpaid co-host of “The Donkey Show” during 2011 and early 2012. He said the on-air insults created such a toxic work environment that he feared for his safety and had no choice but to quit. Mario Conte, the attorney for KFLY/Eugene, Or.'s owner, Bicoastal, said Fleming failed to show that he was subjected to discrimination, was demoted or was treated any differently from anyone else who appeared on the program. Conte argued that the insulting banter on “The Donkey Show” was part of a shtick aimed at generating controversy. Yes, it was crude and crass, Conte said, but it was an equal opportunity insulter. “That’s the nature of this show,” he told jurors. Fleming’s lawsuit claimed he was subjected to age and sex discrimination because many of the insults pounded on those themes, questioning his manhood and insulting him for being over 50. He also claimed that he was fired from the show during a particularly loud rant by lead host Chad “Tanner” Haney when Fleming refused to take part in an annual Super Bowl bet that had demeaning consequences for the loser. SCOOP: Jack Diamond Talks Kelly Clarkson With Clive Davis [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2013 –– Since the release of Clive Davis' (left) memoir "The Soundtrack of My Life," we've heard very few cuts other than his admission of being bi(s)exual and Kelly Clarkson going on the attack over various comments he made about a past meeting. Well, looks like the later track is still in high rotation as, in one of his first radio interviews, he tells Mix 107.3/Washington, D.C.'s Jack Diamond (right), "What's not disputable is that I've believed in Kelly as an artist there at the beginning." He added, "What we have here is simple difference of opinion on memory." He once again stood behind his memoir and repeated he didn't question her talent and wished her only the best in her future. Diamond did move on to other questions saying "We all know who you signed, but went on to ask who he passed on that he regrets. He told Jack, Meatloaf and Jim Steinman auditioned "Bat Out of Hell" live for him and he passed! Admitted he just "didn't hear it." He also passed on John Mellencamp, saying he went to dinner with John and Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Don Henley and John Mellencamp, or "Johnny Cougar", as Diamond reminded him. He said he was just too much like Bruce. Jack then asked Clive if he could attend his next Grammy party and just "serve" or clean up. Clive passed! LISTEN TO AUDIO HERE

INGRAHAM: Scarborough's Beef With Talk Radio May Be From His Show's Cancellation [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 23RD, 2013 –– Leave it to syndicated host, Laura Ingraham to not pull any punches with TV political talker, Joe Scarborough, over his recent talk radio dissage. On her Thursday radio show she fired back at the MSNBC “Morning Joe” host and others who want to blame talk radio for 2012 Republican election fail, suggesting Scarborough’s beef may be linked to his own syndicated radio show getting axed in 2010. According to The Daily Caller, on Thursday's show, Scarborough attacked elements in the conservative movement, including talk radio. A theme he's repeated many times in the past. Ingraham said "Most of the people who berate, or coin this phrase, ‘entertainment complex’ ... they never use that to refer to Hollywood by the way, which actually IS an entertainment complex. It’s only the few shows that actually have some influence and have been quite successful in garnering listeners, advertisers, etc., etc. But the people who urge moderation on the Republican Party got their wish, for the most part: they got Mitt Romney. Host Interrupted By Referee During Live Broadcast [VIDEO]

"I'm On The Air Right Now, Stay Away From Me" [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2013 –– Imagine being on the air and taking a swipe at someone and then turning around and finding them right in your face? That was pretty much the case for WXOX (ESPN)/St. Louis' announcer Bob Ramsey (shown with hands in the air) who called a foul made against his team's Dwayne Evan's a "cheap foul." No sooner said, right in his face is the game official Bo Borowski. To Ramsey's credit he didn't miss a beat by quickly saying "I'm on the air right now. Stay away from me!" ... then joking on air: ""The official is trying to get into our broadcast!" Nicely done. WATCH VIDEO HERE

VANISHING BREED: Critics Weigh-In On Declining Role Of Radio/TV Columnists

"Great hosts once drove the medium’s appeal to listeners ... But those personalities are gone." FEDER

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2013 –– Interesting piece this week from Billboard's Mike Stern who takes a look at the declining number of pure TV/Radio newspaper critics. He writes "Newspapers in most major cities generally had a person tasked with covering the ins and outs of local radio and TV. But today, that position has all but disappeared." To add to his point, he reached out to New York Daily News radio and TV writer David Hinckley who said: “It may be cliché to say this, but radio’s not glamorous and sexy. TV has its visual thing, while people think of radio as background.” One of the country's more notable media bloggers, Robert Feder (shown L), told Stern "The problem is that there isn’t enough local news about the media to cover; a fact that played a role in his leaving a local Chicago paper and starting his own daily blog: "Time Out Chicago." “There was no longer enough content to sustain a daily column about local radio and TV." The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Rodney Ho (shown R) is another of the remaining field of Radio/TV columnists. He laments: “There’s not as many local personalities and a lot more syndicated hosts." Feder said great hosts once drove the medium’s appeal to listeners. “Radio, particularly radio in Chicago, used to be defined by personalities, and that was a large part of what made radio such an attractive and vibrant part of people’s lives. But those personalities are gone.” READ MIKE STERN'S ARTICLE HERE
