UH OH: Reality Star To Detail Affair With Morning Host In New Memoir

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 26TH, 2013 –– Morning shows are notorious for exposing the lives and affairs of celebrities, but for New York's DJ Envy (shown right) of Power 105, this story hits home. According to theurbandaily.com, model/reality star Erica Mena (shown left) has admitted to an affair with DJ Envy, of DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God breakfast club. This happened before she began dating her manager, Rich Dollaz. At first, Envy denied it, but confessed to the affair on his show. He said it was his own insecurities that led him to stray from his wife, Gia Casey, who is now pregnant. Envy is apparently working out things at home and told his listeners "the hardest thing I had to do was tell my wife EVERYTHING ... We’re good. We’re not great. I don’t know what happens from here. Now if we remain together, as a relationship, we’ll see." After baring his soul on the radio he never actually mentioned Mena by name, but she had already confessed to the affair and said she would be detailing the relationship in her book, “Underneath It All.” The book is due out April 2013. Envy has appeared on shows like '106 & Park, Entourage and Tha Corner, which he hosts on the Music Choice channel.

GOLDEN VOICE 2? Radio Show Transforms Street Person Into Show Regular

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 26TH, 2013 –– Who can ever forget the trials and tribulations of Ted Edwards, aka "The Golden Voice." The former radio host/turned street peddler whose story got worldwide attention following his appearance on the syndicated Dave & Jimmy. Within hours he was an international sensation with job offers and TV appearances galore. Sadly, the story continued with various ups and downs, but for months we were consumed with the story. Now comes word of a similar case all the way to Westchester, England. There, Christina Percival, a producer for Key's 103 "The Wrong Show," has helped transform Stephen Rimmer (shown) from a street musician into a regular on the nationally aired show. Christina told The Bolton News that after their house band had been sacked from 13 of their stations, she invited Rimmer to appear. “I thought it would be funny to invite him on. He asked me if I had a business card, he thought I was joking. Now he is a regular part of the show, known as Squatter Stevo.” Rimmer was given a makeover including a spray tan, knitted suit, advice from celebrity life coaches and now has his own apartment after living on the streets for 4 years. Apparently, so far so good. “He's gone from just a guy living rough to having a job on the radio." Oh yeah, he now wants a girlfriend and Christina is going to try making it happen. Hey, she's a producer. It'll happen, right?

REPORT: Radio Picking Up Steam With Digital Revenue

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 26TH, 2013 –– Radio gained digital share in 2012, and it looks like many stations are building on that momentum in 2013, according to a report issued by Borrell Associates on behalf of the Radio Advertising Bureau. Moreover, there appears to be significant profit in local digital sales operations, the report concludes. The report, Benchmarking: Local Radio Stations, Online Revenues, says that radio grew its online ad revenues 22 percent last year, outpacing the 20 percent overall increase in local online ad expenditures. That was enough to achieve a share increase of two-tenths of a point, to 2.0 percent. The growth signaled a boost for the radio industry, which had lost digital advertising market share for three years against aggressive sales from newspaper, TV, yellow pages and Internet pure play competitors. The results offer strong evidence that radio is turning the corner in digital sales, according to the report. "Digital strategy among radio stations and groups is varied," remarked Erica Farber, president and CEO of the Radio Advertising Bureau.

Jeff & Jer's Sablan & Cain Invade The Oscars

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– Proving once again that The Oscars' security can't be outwitted by one of radios' most top producers, Little Tommy Sablan, our unofficial correspondent at last night's event, and his lovely partner, Laura Cain, somehow landed near front row seats at the annual event. To prove they made it in safely, Tommy passed along a number of photos of them including a shot of them seated right behind Hugh Jackman and Robert Dinero. Laura even snared a pic of her with the legendary Jack Nicholson. Living up to his executive producer roots, Tommy did manage a bit of self-aggrandizement by providing 7himself with his own star on the legendary walk of fame (right). Big night for Seth MacFarland, too, wouldn't you say? 1

CRS Kicks Off This Week: Country Taking Aim At Younger Audience

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– As hundreds descend on Nashville this week for the annual Country Radio Seminar, younger demos will be top on mind. On the heels of WSIX-FM Nashville just launched the Bobby Bones Show, PD Michael Bryan tells tennessean.com, “We’re targeting the show to the 20- and 30-somethings, which hasn’t been done in the country format.” WSIX Program Director Michael Bryan said. “If you look at the artists, what we’re doing is a reflection of what’s popular. We have to do this if we’re going to raise a new generation of country listeners.” The agenda reflects that same sentiment with one of its sessions "Is 18-34 the new 25-54?” sTwenty years ago, the topic might not have generated the same level of interest, said Sean Ross, vice president of music and programming at Edison Research. “There wasn’t any music that a self-respecting teen would have been interested in .. There wasn’t as much tempo .. There wasn’t as much of a rock edge.” Ross adds "There also wasn’t a Taylor Swift. Or a Jason Aldean. Or a Lady Antebellum." Consultant Jaye Albright says radio programmers should take a cue from census data, which indicate that today’s 16- to 33-year-olds, estimated at about 78 million people, as a group are not only larger than the generation immediately preceding them, but also larger than the leading edge of baby boomers. Jacobs Media Announces Smart Launch

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 20123 –– A recent post in the JacoBlog about the launch of Nash FM and its difficulty in corralling its social media accounts has led to the debut of a new Jacobs Media service, Smart Launch™. Spearheaded by social media strategist, Lori Lewis (shown), the company will offer a 30-day program to ensure that new station debuts go off seamlessly – socially. It will be available to broadcasters launching new stations as well as to those defending against a debut from another station in the market. According to Lewis, “I am excited to be able to work with companies to make sure that everything’s in place socially on Day One. I’ll then personally work with a station’s social accounts to welcome fans, connect with new listeners, handle competitive threats, and take full advantage of the social sphere.” Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs notes, “Radio pays a lot of attention to the meat and potatoes of a launch – testing the music, production, sales support, and marketing. But too often, the all-important social assets are on a back-burner or not accounted for at all. Smart Launch™ will give new stations an important advantage.” Broadcasters interested in Smart Launch™ can contact Paul Jacobs for more information – 248-353-9030.

REPORT: Radios' Star Being Dimmed By The Internet

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– Interesting, if not a sobering article in mysanantonio.com on the impact of internet radio. "Since the turn of the century, the onslaught of new technology has contributed significantly to the dimming commercial radio's star," says writer Nolan Hicks. "It was about that time that the first major satellite radio service launched, offering subscribers the opportunity to listen to hundreds of channels of programming for a fee. Apple created the iPod, which popularized the digital music player and allowed CD owners to put their music on one device. Tim Westergren then founded Pandora Media. And, of course, now that it isn't limited to just computers, things have gotten even more complicated. The ability to stream music from the phone in your pocket — using Pandora or one of its competitors — represents the biggest challenge to commercial radio that the technological revolution has wrought, said Larry Rosin, president of Edison Research, a media research provider ... Pandora is clearly stealing time from commercial radio music stations, primarily among people under 35 years old,” Rosin said. Some on the terrestrial radio side aren't convinced: “We've seen them complement each other,” said Ezra Kucharz, president of Local Digital Media at CBS. As an example, he said someone might listen to 1010 WINS — an all-news radio station in New York City — on their car radio on their way to work, and then use the web stream to listen to the station on their computer on the job. “They're not cannibalizing each other,” he said. “If anything, it's growing the overall pot.” READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

POWERED BY PURTAN: Detroit's Radiothon Raises $1,364.122 For Salvation Army

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2013 –– Annual to radio's best bud, Art Vuolo, the annual Salvation Army Radiothon in Detroit was started 26 years ago by Dick Purtan at (then) WCZY. Those calls became WKQI and later, when Dick segued to WOMC the Radiothon shifted over to that station. After his retirement, the event was picked up by The Great Voice of the Great Lakes WJR-AM. The last two of the three Radiothons on WJR brought Purtan out of retirement and last Friday in one day, on one station, in 16 hours, they raised an amazing $1,364,122! Even in Detroit's crippled economy, Purtan said "that is impressive."
