WABB-FM Era Ends; Signs Off At Midnight

Manager Bets Morning Show And Others Will Land Elsewhere Soon

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 29TH, 2012 –– Jockline Daily has covered the recent sale and history of WABB-FM/Mobile at length, along with a tribute to some of its celebrated former cast members. Tonight, this chapter in Top 40 history is put to rest as the calls, WABB-FM go away at midnight. Cathy Kaufman, WABB’s station manager tells AI '“We go off the air at midnight Wednesday and then it’s theirs to do with as they please.” New owner EMF is a religious broadcaster whose flagships are the K-LOVE and Air1 radio services with both focusing contemporary Christian music. Most likely, it'll adopt the K-LOVE format. The deal doesn't affect WABB-AM 1480, a talk station. “We’re all out of jobs as of Wednesday, so we’re all talking to people ... You don’t have to be a genius to know that with our morning show and our DJs holding such a prominent place with the listeners in the market, that one of the other groups is going to want them to come work there. I just don’t know who it is. I’ll bet that probably before the end of the week we’ll know,” said Kaufman. The sale brings to a close 50 years of local ownership under the legendary Bernie Dittman and his heirs. Check Out WABB History here

Newt Questions The Regular Guys Draw At Hooters [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 29TH, 2012 –– As presidential candidates canvas the airwaves to rally support, it's always nice to hear the occasional call-ins to non-political shows. That was certainly the case yesterday, as presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich rang up Atlanta's Rock 100.5 Regular Guys. While waiting to go on-air, Newt overheard the show discussing their appearance at Hooters. Shortly after being introduced he asked: 'Are you actually going to have people come and watch you eat? ... does Hooters think its going increase traffic by watching you eat? ... I recommend you doing this during happy hour so people can drink." Moments later the subject turned serious as the price of gas came up. Newt has little doubt he could lower it $2 to $2.50 range in short order. When pressed to explain he said there are three things the President could do this morning to make it happen: Sign the XL Keystone Pipeline; 700,000 barrels a day could go from Canada to Houston. Reopen the Gulf of Mexico to a pre-Obama level; 400,000 barrels a day. Open the known spots in Alaska, a 1,200,000 barrels a day. And hat's before you get into anything new." Larry Wachs thought he could do better than that. Gingrich quipped, "What did you pay the last time you filled up your car?" LISTEN TO AUDIO

Trump Wishes Seacrest Had Punched 'The Dictator' Cohen [VIDEO]

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 29TH, 2012 –– By now you're familiar with Donald Trump's infamous viral video rants. His lastest goes after Sacha Baron Cohen after dumping ashes on Ryan Seacrest during Sunday's Oscar broadcast. Calling Cohen a third-rate character, Trump says "He thought he was being cute and funny when he threw ashes at Seacrest. Now I know Ryan Seacrest, he's a great guy, and you could see he was visibly upset." He voiced great disappointment with security as well. "Believe me, if that ever happened to somebody with real security, Sacha Baron Cohen would not be in good shape right now, he'd be in a hospital. He would have been punched in the face so many times he wouldn't have known what happened. I only wish that Ryan had taken a swing at him...' And for those who wonder just how popular Trump's rants are, nearly 31,000 views later, apparently people take notice. WATCH VIDEO

John & Ken Return To KFI; Meet With Black Group

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 28th, 2012 –– KFI LA's John & Ken returned to the air yesterday after being benched over remarks made following Whitney Houston's death. Representatives from the LA Urban League and other African-Americans met with John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou on Monday along with KFI GM Greg Ashlock and PD Robin Bertolucci. The LA Times reports that community activist Najee Ali said Monday he was confident that KFI would move in a positive direction to address the concerns expressed in the meeting."The station pledged to make substantive changes in diversity," he said. "They are trying to build a bridge. John and Ken really want to put this behind them and move forward. Their voices are needed in Southern California, and they have done some good things. We can't throw out the baby with the bathwater." The pair spent less than a minute on yesterday's show discussing the suspension. Kobylt said, "We're not going to talk about what happened a week and a half ago in any detail. What I said on the air and in the press statement 10 days ago still stands, and it was sincere."

Radio 1 No Longer For Ears Only; Adds Pictures And Video To It's Final Hour of Official Chart

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 28th, 2012 –– For the past several months, Jockline Daily has been touting the rise of video in radio's future. In yet another example of this reality, comes word from the UK's Radio 1 which made radio history on Sunday in The Official Chart by adding pictures and videos to its final hour. According to The Telegraph, following what was described as old fashioned audio only, Reggie Yates (shown) launched 'The Official Chart by leaning into the camera and dissing his crew for not having perked up their wardrobe for the occasion. This video inclusion is just in time for Radio 1's upcoming big free event which will include such artist will.i.am, Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, David Guetta and Lana Del Rey in June. Lots of positive tweets and texts quickly followed. “It is definitely impossible to revise and watch The Official Chart,” said Yates. “Focus on your revision.” And just how convinced are we of video in radio's future? Get ready for an exclusive, Comrex sponsored 'Must See Radio,' presented by Jacob's Media's Fred Jacob at this year's Morning Show Boot Camp in Miami. More details coming soon.

YIKES: Jock Fired For Tweeting; Violated Clause In Contract

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 28th, 2012 –– It's a story that happened a few thousand miles away, but it's surely to echo all over the radio world. According to destinyman.com, Fortune Maswanganyi, better known as DJ Cappuccino, was fired by Limpopo-based radio station Capricorn FM. "...Employers may integrate standard online behaviour expectations into your employment contract and also have a separate company social media policy forming part of their standard employee HR policies and procedures." KICKIN' ASH: Chatter Continues Following Seacrest Dusting

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 28th, 2012 –– It was the talk of radio and on the internet yesterday. The infamous scene from the red carpet prior to Sunday's Oscar telecast where actor Sacha Baron Cohen's dressed in full "The Dictator" costume dumped ashes on Ryan Seacrest. Following the mishap, enquiring minds wondered if it was the real deal, or a page out of the ol' radio playbook. FB Friend Yvette Hoffman told us she thought it was ‎"ash" kickin'.... 99 Virgin Radio/Toronto's Melissa Bunting called it one of the most DVR'd moments at the show's Oscar party. So funny." Just most WMGK/Chicago's just moved to PMD Gary Spears called it "Classic. Will show up years from now. Most everyone agreed, staged or otherwise, a work of brilliance. Even Hollywood weighed in. American Idol colleague Randy Jackson tweeted, “Gotta holla at @RyanSeacrest about he and Sacha’s weird ashes later at the party.” And what did Seacrest say about it. He tweeted: “My mom always told me to pack two jackets for red carpets, always wondered why. Now I know.”

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 28TH, 2012 –– The first comment out of the Twisted Sister’s mouth was, “Let me just go on record and say, ‘No it’s not right to put your daughters implants in. No man is meant to hold his daughters nipples in his hand. No!” Duran asked, “Who do you love and who do you hate on Celebrity Apprentice?” Snider responded, “Trump keeps telling us we’re boring…let’s be a bunch of John Riches and get it done and let the women fight it out…This is the worst season of cattiness, viciousness, ugliness on the women’s side. On the men’s side, everyone said ‘I’m going to be a ninja man.’” Snider also promoted a rare Twisted Sister concert this Saturday in Poughkeepsie to benefit Fallen Blue, which raises money for police officers shot while helping others while off-duty. Miguel Fuller Is Out And Open At Play 98.7 Tampa

THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 28TH, 2012 –– Nice piece in Tampa Bay's Creative Loafing featuring FOM Miguel Fuller on of Play 98.7 "That Guy' Kramer Show" featuring Steve Kramer, Holly O’Connor and Miguel. The heart of the story centers on Miguel's quick ties to the local LGBT community for his openess to being the areas only openly gay radio personality. Writer Annie Murphy asked "Have you always been openly gay as a radio personality? Yes, although most other stations I worked for made it something that wasn’t really talked about. When it was brought up the typical response from the stations was, "We’ll see how it goes." With Play 98.7, it was important to me that my program director was comfortable with me being myself, an openly gay black male. He made a point of making this something that was just as important to him as it is to me. As for relaying this to listeners, he says: "I make a point of letting our audience know that being gay doesn’t make someone any different than anyone else. We all have a lot of the same issues and when it comes down to it, we are all the same." Read Complete Article Here
