INFINITE DIAL 2017: Podcasting Continues To Boom; Weekly Online Audience Rises To 53%

7

THE MOUTH, MARCH 10TH, 2017 –– Yesterday's much anticipated 2017 Infinite Dial Study by Edison Research and Triton Digital was unveiled and showed that Podcasting continues to be a growth medium, as 40% of Americans 12+ say they have listened to a podcast, while 24% say they have listened to one in the past month, up from 21% one year ago. In addition, six in ten Americans are now familiar with the term “podcasting,” a number that has risen 22% in two years.

7The 2017 Infinite Dial, the latest report in a series dating back to 1998 that covers consumer usage of media and technology, also introduces coverage of “Smart Speakers,” a category which includes voice-controlled devices such as the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Today, 63% of Americans 12+ are aware of at least one device in this category, while 7%, an estimated 20 million Americans, live in 7households that have at least one smart speaker. The study has become the report card on digital audio and other digital media, and is widely used and quoted by broadcasters, Internet radio, ad agencies, and the financial community. Among the many other highlights:

The Weekly Online Radio audience is now 140 million Americans, or 53% of Americans 12+ • Time spent listening to online radio surges to an all-time high of 14:39 per week • Pandora continues to lead in the online radio space—32% of Americans have listened in the past month—but Spotify is a strong second at 18%. • Social Media usage is beginning to consolidate around a few platforms, with Twitter’s growth rate continuing to decline—especially 12-24

“With 7% of Americans 12+ now owning smart speakers such as the Amazon Echo and Google home products, this represents an extraordinary opportunity for increased consumption of internet radio in the home,” said John Rosso (shown), President of Market Development at Triton Digital. “Content producers would be wise to pay close attention to this growing segment of the market.” SEE MORE HERE

[WATCH] Mike Stern Shares Comedy Tips By Steve Martin

THE MOUTH, MARCH 10, 2017 –– Jacobs Media’s Mike Stern is always searching for that talent coaching edge and provides a peek at comedy legend Steve Martin's master-class course (see Popline 3/3). The class costs just $90 and includes 25 online lessons. Stern says, what sold him was the promotional video for the class. Here is one of the tips that caught his attention:

1) “You are a thought machine – everything you see, hear, and experience is usable.” While being timely and topical is an important part of a great radio show, so is being relatable. Too many hosts spend their entire day staring at weird news stories on the Internet and instead of balancing the search for content with real life experiences they can bring back to their show. Opening your eyes and ears and experiencing life is prep…if you use it wisely. Stern says, "The way I figure it, if he hit on several worthwhile points in a 2-minute free trailer, an investment of under $100 is well worth it. Who knows? Maybe I’ll see you in class. WATCH HERE

WDST Woodstock Gets Boost From Fan Fund Drive

7

THE MOUTH, MARCH 9TH, 2017 - Radio Woodstock has gotten a boost from its listeners with the aid of pledges made by nearly 300 supporters in a fund drive last week. recordonline.com reports supporters made either a single payment of $100.10 or committed to a monthly contribution of $8.35. "It's really inspiring to us," Richard Fusco, general manager for the station, said Wednesday. "It is one thing to have listeners say they love the station. It is another thing for them to put their hands in their pockets and pull out $100."

WDST is among a shrinking number of independent commercial radio stations left in the country, he said. He believes it is the only one of those to operate as a listener- and local business-supported broadcaster. The results of the drive allow the station to limit commercials to no more than two-and-a-half minutes at a time and only 10 minutes per hour, Fusco said. The infusion of money gives the 3,000-watt station a chance to deepen its mission. "We think of ourselves as a lifestyle station," Fusco said. "We have tried to create a radio station dedicated to classic rock 'n' roll, but to turn on listeners to new music too. PHOTO/Buff talks with Jennifer Maidman about her new record “Dreamland,” and Jennifer plays a tune live, too!
