[WATCH] FEMA Head Makes Case For FM Chips In Cellphones

7

THE MOUTH, MARCH 20TH, 2015 –– At a Congressional hearing this week, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler seemed to suggest that broadcasters are seeking a government mandate. The NAB's Dennis Wharton responded saying that broadcasters are NOT seeking a government mandate; we merely seek the FCC's help in using its influence in enabling a technology that can save lives in emergency situations. He added feedback from Craig Fugate, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Association, who strongly backs the idea of activated FM chips in cellphones. Fugate notes that cellphones often become "a brick" in a lifeline situation because of capacity constraints and the inferior one-to-one transmission architecture of cellphone networks. Referencing the Washington, DC earthquake and Hurricane Sandy a few years ago, Fugate note that "When cellphone systems went down or data was overloaded, you just couldn't get information." By contrast, Fugate noted that local radio's "one-to-everyone" transmission architecture remains reliable in emergency situations. Having activated radio chips in a cellphones can be a critical lifeline source. "It would be another way to ensure that when all else fails, you get information from the broadcasters. … The most important information is going to come from your local broadcasters" Fugate noted. NPR has named Michael Oreskes (R), a top Associated Press executive and former New York Times editor, to run its news division. Officially, Oreskes will be the network's senior vice president for news and editorial director, a slightly refashioned title. Oreskes is currently vice president and senior managing editor at the AP, where he oversees the giant international news wire's daily report. Former Senior Vice President for News Margaret Low Smith departed last summer, just weeks into the tenure of Jarl Mohn, the newly appointed CEO. Mohn said he selected Oreskes after a lengthy process and that he intended the appointment to reflect the central role that news coverage should play in defining NPR's identity. NPR has emerged in the black financially this year after six years of failing to do so. Since last summer, former All Things Considered Executive Producer Christopher Turpin has served as NPR's chief news executive. NPR said Turpin has accepted a role as Oreskes' deputy in a new position, vice president for news.

Mel Greig Returns To Radio For First Time In Over Two Years Since Royal Prank

"I feel quite sick to be perfectly honest … this is quite overwhelming"

THE MOUTH, MARCH 20TH, 2015 –– Hard to believe it's been over two years since the infamous royal prank. Surprisingly, Mel Greig (L), one half of the 2Day FM show responsible for the prank, hasn't stepped foot in a radio studio until this week when she returned to a studio mic at BBC Radio 2. According to news.com.au, she said of her return, “I feel quite sick to be perfectly honest … this is quite overwhelming,” Ms Greig told BBC2 Radio listeners in the UK. During the interview Greig was forced to listen back to part of the original broadcast and then took calls from listeners most of which were sympathetic although one said it was “disgraceful” the BBC should give her airtime to defend herself. She said she did try to alter the hoax call and dub over the nurses voices and it was never her idea to do the prank in the first place but she felt disgust with herself when she heard the nurse had taken her life. Asked whether 2 Day FM, owned by Southern Cross Austereo, protected her or “hung you out to dry” after the incident to she paused then retorted “well I mean what do you think? ... They were really concerned for my safety and my well being which was good, providing a psychologist straight away straight away, I mean we were in lock down for three months and I had constant security guards, bodyguards, we had bullets sent to police stations with our names on it we had so many active death threats,” she said before she recounted verbatim some of the death threat messages she had received from people in Britain.
