Radio 1 Head Says Madonna Isn't Banned; Just Needs Better Songs

Radio 1 Now Setting Up A ‘Youth Council’ To Tell It What Is Cool

THE MOUTH, MARCH 24TH, 2015 –– Madonna has been on a tear lately saying she was “shocked” afer learning that 'Living For Love' would not be played on the BBC's Radio 1. Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper sees it a different way. He tells The Telegraph: “I love Madonna. I’ve been to see her concerts several times, and I’ve bought several of her records. I’ve even got a signed front cover of The Face magazine that she was on, on my wall," said Cooper. “There’s nothing personal about Madonna. It’s just about the merit of the music an artist is creating at the time. We haven’t banned Madonna .. but 7with this current record – when it’s a choice between that and, say, Wolf Alice [a 20-something British band] or a new up-and-coming artist, you go, ‘Which is more relevant to a young audience?," he added. In an effort to better understand its audience, Radio 1 is setting up a ‘youth council’ to tell it what is cool. Madonna, now 56, has endeavoured to stay relevant over the years “They will meet four times a year, they will review the previous quarter’s output, and they will also tell us about what’s happening in youth culture – whether that be about Nike or Nando’s,” Mr Cooper said. The group of a dozen 16-24-year-olds “will give us insights into how we should be distributing our content, what content we should be doing, and what issues are relevant to young people today."

Blue Sun Media Launches One Spot Sites Digital Service

THE MOUTH, MARCH 24TH, 2015 –– Blue Sun Media announced that it has launched a new service for radio stations: One Spot Sites. Russ Gilbert, Founder and Managing Director of Blue Sun Media, said: “Up until now maintaining a station’s digital presence has been an exercise in frustration. In many cases, every system has its own login and control panel that doesn’t talk to the others. Editing the Website, Contesting, Text Messaging, Email Club and other functions are typically all on their own islands, and that’s before we even start talking about Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. It’s very different with One Spot Sites. Everything is built into Wordpress. All the tools most stations need are there in one system. The best part is that our websites are available for the cost of just one spot per day!” Blue Sun Founder Russ Gilbert grew up in the radio business was one of the radio industry’s first digital employees in 1998. He built and oversaw the architecture for Clear Channel’s online presence at the radio company’s peak ownership period (1212 radio stations plus the venues and email marketing for Clear Channel Entertainment, now Live Nation). In the second half of the last decade, Russ was Vice President of Digital Innovation for Tribune Interactive before founding Blue Sun Media.

Top British Host Defends Decision To Keep Madonna Off Playlist

THE MOUTH, MARCH 23RD, 2015 –– One of BBC Radio 1's most popular host, Scott Mills, has backed the station's decision to not play Madonna's new single 'Living For Love.' According to nme.com, Radio 1 have consistently denied refusing to playlist artists on the grounds of age, but Madonna has said the decision not to give airtime to the song is "discriminatory." Mills, has stepped in to defend t7he move and explained that Madonna does not appeal to the younger listeners that the station is trying to attract. Speaking to The Mirror, Mills said: "'I don't actually mind the new single. But do I think Radio 1 should play it? Probably not." Explaining his reasoning, Mills said that the age of Madonna fans - as opposed to the singer herself - were behind the decision: "They're trying to get the average age of the listener down and, to be honest, most Madonna fans are in their 30s and 40s. When you’ve got more relevant up-and-coming artists and bands and there’s a space on the playlist, then it’s in the BBC Radio 1 remit that it should go to a British artist anyway." Mills response comes after Radio 1 issued its own reply to Madonna's ageism claims. The station recently said that they "do not ever ban artists" and that "Tracks are chosen on musical merit and relevance to our young audience. An artist’s age is never a factor." Madonna will play London on December 1st.
