Radio Rallies For Trayvon Martin [VIDEO]

THE MOUTH, MARCH 26TH, 2012 –– In the aftermath of the tragic shooting and death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, numerous stations, coast to coast, began rallying in tribute for the fallen teen. Among them included Tampa's Hip-Hop Wild 94.1 who stopped playing music for two hours on Friday and held an open forum. Led by The Freak Show's Orlando he was joined by a psychologist, a local reporter and an official from their County's State Attorney's Office. At 102 Jamz/Greensboro, NC, Santillian And The Wild Out Morning Show launched a drive to send empty Skittles bags to the Sanford, Florida police department. Many contained notes like the one shown. Santillian told WFMY TV News "Even if you're not African-American or a minority, you can look at the situation that went on with Trayvon and see something doesn't seem right." Rallies like this and numerous others were fueled by the story of neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman not being charged in the murder. He claims he shot Martin in self-defense. WATCH VIDEO

Murphy In The Morning Comeback Cut Short In Chicago

THE MOUTH, MARCH 26TH, 2012 –– What had been heralded as a triumphant return by one Chicago's beloved personalites, came to a screeching halt last Friday as longtime host Robert Murphy was pulled from morning drive on Rewind 100.3 after only six months. He told Rober Feder's "Time Out Chicago," “It may have been impossible for me to win, but I certainly was willing to give it my best shot." That impossibility Murphy referred to was apparently due to the music-intensive nature of the format. “The personality had to be very, very precise and edited and squeezed in, which does make a personality radio show suffer,” Murphy told Feder. “I do think some listeners may have been put off by the lack of personality, while the ones who had listened to Rewind before were more comfortable with the more music format." According to Arbitron, over the last six months Rewind 100.3 lost 50 percent of its share of women between 25 and 54 and fell from seventh place to a tie for 19th. Brian Peck now returns to mornings, Megan Reed in middays, and Brian Middleton in afternoons.

Comedian Gallagher Announces On Radio He's Going To Retire

THE MOUTH, MARCH 26TH, 2012 –– With the residue of smashed watermelon still embedded on the floors of radio studios coast to coast, came word that longtime comedian and smash-up, Gallagher, is going to retire. Late last week while chatting with WDCM/Ohio's Scott Spears, he said following his second heart attack in slightly more than a year, he decided to hang up the 'Slede-o-matic." According to Lifestyle & Celebrities, Gallagher said he had two coronary stents replaced and experienced some memory loss after he regained consciousness. "I was surprised that I was in the hospital and my son and daughter were there ... That's why I really don't want to get on stage because I can't remember what I said or what the word is — I don't want to be pitiful." Of note, Gallagher once ran as an Independent for Governor of California in 2003. He finished in 16th place; the same election that placed Arnold Schwarzenegger in the mansion.

GLOVES OFF: Rush Limbaugh And Media Matters Go At It

Media Matters Dumps $100,000 On Attack Ads

THE MOUTH, MARCH 23RD, 2012 –– What began a month ago following Rush Limbaugh's comments on Georgetown's Sandra Fluke, has now evolved from a media frenzy into a full-blown Rush Limbaugh attack. Yesterday, the liberal leaning 'Media Matters' launched an ad blitz of a reported $100,000 for two ads that run in eight cities: Boston; Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Macon, Ga and Cedar Rapids. The ads includes Limbaugh's much publicized words on Fluke and then urge local stations that carry Limbaugh to say "we don't talk to women like that" in our city. Reportedly, those cities were selected because of the belief that Limbaugh may be vulnerable there. In response, Premiere spokesperson, Rachel Nelson stated "This is not about women. It's not about ethics and it's not about the nature of our public discourse. It's a direct attack on America's guaranteed First Amendment right to free speech. It's essentially a call for censorship masquerading as high-minded indignation." On Wednesday's show, Rush fired back saying: "They're (Media Matters) not even really offended by what happened," he said. "This is just an opportunity to execute a plan they've had in their drawer since 2009." While much attention has been focused on the number of advertisers who've left the show, only two affiliates have dropped the show. One in Hawaii and the other in Massachusetts.

FINALLY! Hunger Games Opens Today; Will It Live Up To The Hype? [AUDIO]

Talks Eating White Castle Hamburgers, Playing Basketball And Throwing Up With Duran's Monaro

THE MOUTH, MARCH 23RD, 2012 –– In what's clearly been one of most heavily promoted films to come along in awhile, today officially marks the public opening of 'The Hunger Games." As part of the tour, most every top show in radio has either been visted or rung up by one or more of its cast members. This week, Z100's Elvis Duran welcomed a sleepy Liam Hemsworth to the program to talk about today's debut. They asked whether or not he was ready for all the attention from the movie – he said, “I hope so.“ As for preparation, he told Duran: “For about a month before we started shooting I was training a lot…trying to sweat out as much as I could. We trained with this ex-Navy Seal guy who kind of kicked our asses every day and made me want to throw up a lot.” Speaking of that, co-host Danielle Monaro asked him about his experience eating White Castle hamburgers for the first time. “I didn’t know White Castle was real until we went to Kentucky. We got it, we played basketball right after eating it, and then we threw up.” Anyone want to bet Jockline Daily who this weekend's B.O. Champ will be? LISTEN TO INTERVIEW HERE

ARNN Reaches Out To CNN With Free Offer

THE MOUTH, MARCH 23RD, 2012 –– In a unique way to reach out to those stations who may no longer get CNN News, America's Radio News issued a release yesterday which offered a 45 day contract/inventory free trial to approximately 1100 CNN affiliates. “We're so confident in our product and are willing to allow stations to air it, without inventory requirement – contract free through May 15th," says John McCaslin (shown), Executive Vice President of News for ARNN. CEO Mark Masters commented: "This concept was a simple courtesy extended to those former CNN stations of a six week 'pressure relief valve' where they could sample our product inventory free without pressure, giving them extra time to make the best decision. Obviously we think that we are the best choice, but this offer was meant as a thoughtful courtesy to those stations who have not yet made up their mind." ARNN combined with America’s Morning News now has over 275 affiliations and is heard daily 15 hours-a-day, 5 days-a-week

MOVERS/WAKERS: Host Exits Foundation Following President Obama Image On Blog; Stacey K Adds AMD Duties On Hot 101.7 Santa Rosa

THE MOUTH, MARCH 23RD, 2012 –– Tara Servatius, host of WRNN's Hot Talk Morning Show in Myrtle Beach, has resigned from her position as a blogger with the John Locke Foundation over a picture parody of President Barack Obama she published Monday. The image showed President Obama in tight black clothing, chains, high heel boots and a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken in front of him. Carolina Live quotes WRNN FM GM Barry Brown as saying he didn't believe Servatius' blog was grounds to fire her from the radio show."We really don't think Tara's personal blog reflects the view of Next Media," said Brown. "She said nothing wrong on the radio. It was on a personal blog. If it offended people, we are sorry." ---- Hot 101.7/Santa Rosa, CA, PD Stacey K is adding morning host to her daily duties. ---- OUR BAD: In this week's mention of WSRS-FM adding of Heidi West to mornings where she joins Greg Byrne for The Greg & Heidi Morning Show, we listed WSRS as Springfield, MA rather than Worcester. Our apologies for the oversight.
