Rush (The Band) Issues C&D To Limbaugh; Radio's Michaels Miffed

"You want us to play your music on the radio when it helps you sell records, but now your huge nose (Geddy) is out of joint and you want to stop a dj from playing your music??" - Bill Michaels 97X Quad Cities

THE MOUTH, MARCH 8TH, 2012 –– Perhaps you read where Peter Gabriel wanted Rush Limbaugh to stop playing his music for rejoiners. Now, Rush (the band) has sent a C&D to make Rush (Limbaugh) stop playing Rush. This prompted Bill Michaels' of Cumulus' 97X/Quad Cities' Dwyer and Michaels show to ask: "You want us to play your music on the radio when it helps you sell records, but now your huge nose (Geddy) is out of joint and you want to stop a dj from playing your music??" He then brings up Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders. "She's a huge environmentalist and Limbaugh uses her song "My City Was Gone" as his theme music at least 2X per hour, 3 hours per day for almost 30 years. How come she isn't squawking? Money, of course. He has a deal to pay her $100,000 per year, every year he pays her just to play that song!" says Michaels. The distinctive opening riff from this song has been used as theme music for Rush Limbaugh's talk show since 1984 during his days at KFBK in Sacramento, CA. Reportedly, Hynde once demanded that Limbaugh stop using the song, which he did. However, she did an about-face and offered Limbaugh the use of her song in exchange for his donating $100,000 to PETA. According to Limbaugh, Chrissie Hynde never said she didn't want him to use it. She isn't a fan, but her parents are and that is why she has allowed him to use it. READ C&D LETTER HERE

Rush Puts Kibosh On Sponsor Rumors

Rush: "Two of the sponsors who have canceled have asked to return.."

THE MOUTH, MARCH 8TH, 2012 –– Premiere syndicated Rush Limbaugh began his show yesterday by asking listeners to indulge him for a few minutes before getting to the day's issues. Well, even though this was the day after 'super Tuesday' their biggest issue was likely his latest take on 'Flukegate." Particularly, reports involving the rapid rise of sponsor drops. He relayed a message sent from his own brother who asked "You really lost 28 sponsors?" "No, we have not lost 28 sponsors," says Limbaugh. "Well, how can they say it?" his brother asked. "Because they lie," says Limbaugh. He added "..because they don't understand how it works..:" He then announced "We have three brand-new sponsors that will be starting in the next two weeks." This was followed by the tease: "Two of the sponsors who have canceled have asked to return ... One of them is practically begging to come back. Everything is fine on the business side. Everything's cool. There is not a thing to worry about. What you're seeing on television about this program and sponsors and advertisers is just incorrect. "

Payne, a friend of the TNT Radio Empire, stopped by to talk movies and joked about an alternate ending of his Oscar winning movie, The Descendants. "After the wife dies, I would have liked to include a scene the in crematorium where they all standing there solemn and we cutaway into the casket and the wife wakes up." Clearly in jest about the alternative ending, but Alexander did confirm in order to really capture the Hawaiian lifestyle he moved there for eight months. Rough. Payne also revealed the constant pressure he puts on himself to look for the next great movie and that to stay focused in the business he watches a movie a day. Todd, a fellow yogi with Alexander, was able to get out Alexander how he got Jack Nicholson for his movie 'About Schmidt' and how he got Kathy Bates to get naked. LISTEN TO AUDIO

7TOP NEWS FROM THE UK: Englebert Humperdink In Boy Band? Bee Jock Changes Name

By Graham Mack

THE MOUTH, MARCH 8TH, 2012 –– Anthony Seldon is a respected private school headmaster and authoritative political commentator better known for writing about Tony Blair than Bono. He showed exactly why he should stick to politics after telling a live radio show that 75-year-old Engelbert Humperdink was a ‘young singer’ in a boy-band. The gaffe came when Dr Seldon was asked to comment on the decision to name the singer of the 1967 hit “Release Me” as the UK candidate for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions?’ on Friday night, Dr Seldon replied: ‘I think  that he is absolutely excellent. I’m all for boy-bands and young singers.’ As the astonished studio audience began to snigger, panel chairman Jonathan Dimbleby quipped: ‘He’s quite old.’ A dumbfounded Dr Seldon, 58, replied: ‘He’s old?’ Dimbleby continued: ‘There is a view that he’s a pensioner!’ As the audience laughed, an embarrassed Dr Seldon was heard saying: ‘I give up.’

Bill Maher Defends Limbaugh

"Hate to defend #RushLimbaugh but he apologized, liberals looking bad not accepting."

THE MOUTH, MARCH 7TH, 2012 –– As more Rush Limbaugh advertisers head to the exit door, the last person you would expect to see come to his defense, 'Real Time's' Bill Maher lashed out at liberals yesterday via Twitter. Just after 4 PM he tweeted:"Hate to defend #RushLimbaugh but he apologized, liberals looking bad not accepting. Also hate intimidation by sponsor pullout." Limbaugh apologized Saturday for his choice of words, and again on Monday's show. Numerous conservative radio and tv commentators denounced Limbaugh's choice of words, but were quick to defend his message and pointed out hypocrisy on the left for not taking similar action against hosts such as Mahar who once referred to Governor Sarah Palin in an even cruder term. Following Mahar's post, there was quick reaction by his Twitter followers. @PirateWench ·-- @billmaher Sorry Bill - that was not an apology. After he said he was "sorry" he went right back on the air and piled on again. No Dice. --- @ReverendSue · @billmaher you're not much better than Limbaugh if you truly think that was an apology. You're just furthering the #waronwomen. #women.

RUSH TO JUDGEMENT? Stock Drops Following Ad Dump; Netflix Claims They're Not A Sponsor

THE MOUTH, MARCH 7TH, 2012 –– Carbonite CEO David Friend may want to rethink his rush to judgement after being among the first to dump its advertising on Rush Limbaugh's show. Following Limbaugh's apology, Friend went ahead with it withdrawal saying "We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse." According to the Daily Caller, that apparently didn't fair that well with investors. Since the market's open on Monday through its close yesterday Carbonite stock (NASDAQ:CARB) dropped nearly 12 percent. It was also one of the biggest decliners of the day on NASDAQ. Meanwhile, with Rush detractors quick to report the latest advertiser dump, much was made of Netflix being one of them to go. However, Netflix spokesperson, Joris Evers, quickly dashed off a note yesterday to some of those reports stating: "Netflix has not purchased and does not purchase advertising on the Rush Limbaugh show. We do buy network radio advertising and have confirmed that two Netflix spots were picked up in error as part of local news breaks during the Rush Limbaugh show. We have instructed our advertising agency to make sure that this error will not happen again."

Will Ferrell On The Bone: Gets No Rise From Love Scenes [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, MARCH 7TH, 2012 –– Cumulus 107.7 The Bone/San Francisco's Lamont, of Lamont & Tonelli Show, had just come from a colonoscopy when he arrived at Monday night's screening of Will Ferrell's new movie 'Casa de mi Padre.' Ferrell joked: "That's so ironic. I had a colonoscopy yesterday, too." We have a bond!" screamed Lamont. Co-starring with the extremely attractive Genesis Rodriguez (very happily shown below), (Paul) Tonelli wondered if Ferrell ever got a "rise" during love scenes? Can you say 'boner' on The Bone?, quipped Will. He then explained, "You actually don't cause there's usually a couple of overweight, sweaty crew guys watching you--who aren't suppose to be there." And what would a Will Ferrell interview be without a few impersonations. When asked to do his famous SNL Harry Carey voice, almost on cue he launched into character describing San 7Francisco as the "city by the lake." He was also quizzed as to why there were never any sequels to his films. He didn't seem to know, but did agree that "Anchor Man" would be a good one (see Popline below - Step Brothers 2 is a go). Former Baller Kyle Turley Takes Aim At Drew Brees On Nashville's Wake Up Zone [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, MARCH 7TH, 2012 –– If you're a football fan, you no doubt are familiar with the latest controversy swirling over alleged 'bounty bonuses' being paid in the NFL. Knee deep in the furor are the New Orlean's Saints. On Monday, former NFL offensive lineman Kyle Turley took special aim at New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees who in addition to being the Saint's QB is also an executive member of the NFL Players Association. Because of his highly coveted status, Turley wanted to know if he was aware of such activity. Seeming bent on tarnishing Bree's glow, he joined WGFX/Nashville's Wake Up Zone yesterday and stirred the pot once again. “People don’t like to see when people I guess call out certain things they might not want to see ... I just merely suggested if all of these people in the Saints knew this, then potentially Drew Brees knew. If Drew Brees knew about that, then there’s a bigger, bigger, bigger, problem.’’ "... All I want to know is if Drew knew ... If he didn’t know, then he should say he didn’t know and he should say he didn’t know immediately,’’ Turley said. LISTEN TO INTERVIEW HERE

Programmer Steve Rivers Passes Away; Friends Remember

THE MOUTH, MARCH 7TH, 2012 –– There are perhaps few programmers who touched more lives and careers in radio than the legendary Steve Rivers. Sadly, he passed away yesterday in Tampa leaving behind a legend of devoted friends and fans. River's (Carl Belcher) resume featured an impressive list career stops including head programming positions at Evergreen Media, Richie Balsbaugh's Pyramid Broadcasting and CBS. He also programmed stations such as WXKS-FM Boston and L.A.’s KIIS FM. No sooner had news spread of his passing before his friends and associates took his Facebook Wall with numerous postings. CBS' Greg Strassell told Jockline Daily: Steve Rivers was a fierce competitor when we faced off in Boston, and later I got to know the real Steve when we were on the same team. Warm, compassionate pro, a great man who took pride in the people he worked with closely.  He presented opportunities for people working with them, and he always made them better. We spent one evening walking in Manhattan with him pointing out the pizza restaurants that were “indicators” of what station was hot at the moment. You never knew what you would learn from Steve.  My condolences to his family. I am sorry for what they have been going through.  He was a positive force for a lot of people."
