[WATCH] What Really Happens When Commuters Are Driving?

7

THE MOUTH, APRIL 12TH, 2016 –– In a further peek at Edison Research's Hacking The Commuter Code' they add that according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, over 90% of households have a car, over 85% of workers travel to work, by car – and the overwhelming majority of them are alone for that ride. In 1982 motorists spent an average of 16 hours a year sitting in traffic. In 2015, the average urban commuter spent about 42 hours a year stuck in traffic jams. This latest study gets down to a more granular 7level – how often do drivers switch, what’s playing when they switch, and what do they switch to?

In “Hacking the Commuter Code,” we conducted a large national survey of commuters and in addition we developed a new methodology to capture the actual, second by second, in-car audio behaviors of commuters across the country. People switch for a variety of reasons: they switch when they hear commercials, but they also switch while they are listening to a song, looking for a better song. We have never-before-seen data. In the linked video, WATCH actual drivers along with their listening stats.- SEE REPORT HERE

Radio Great Pat St. John On The Mend Following Fall

THE MOUTH, APRIL 12TH, 2016 –– SiriusXM's Pat St. John was in the news last week after falling off a porch. His daughter Tierney wrote yesterday: "Hello Friends and Family, this is Pat's daughter, reporting on his behalf: On Tuesday, dad was carrying his beloved grandson Chase to bed, it was dark and one misstep caused Dad and Chase to fall off of a porch platform. Dad landed on his back, and while Chase was initially shaken up, when he realized grandpa was hurt, he immediately showed compassion, care, and concern for his dear grandpa.

Thankfully Chase was fine, but dad suffered spinal trauma, including shattered and fractured vertebrae. He is still in the hospital, but he has a wonderful attitude and is determined to heal and recover ... I know dad is really looking forward to being back on the air and to continue doing what he loves. I will share your messages of support and encouragement with dad until he can communicate with you all directly. Full of hope and gratitude. Pat's brother Michael Stevens in Houston, TX emailed radio videographer Art Vuolo, "Considering the seriousness of his injuries, so far news has been positive. Pat and I have spoken, and he is his usual forever optimistic self. This will be a one step at a time process. They did not operate immediately, which I'm told is the best scenario. Send you best to Pat at pat@patstjohn.net

THE MOUTH, APRIL 12TH, 2016 –– Joseph Gerard Spooner, known to listeners of 92.3 The Fan as "J.G." Spooner, did not enter a plea Monday morning during his first court appearance since he was arrested Tuesday reports cleveland.com. Spooner is accused of stealing more than $7,000 from a fundraiser he started for a woman suffering from cystic fibrosis. Spooner, 35, allegedly funneled every donation made last year from a GoFundMe campaign to help 35-year-old Allyson Thadeus-Zappe fight the disease to his personal bank account, according to police reports.

Thadeus-Zappe, who was Spooner's childhood friend, died in July 2015. The campaign initially received about $770 in donations. Spooner reached out to Thaddeus-Zappe and her family and offered to help. The family agreed, and Spooner re-launched the campaign using his name. Spooner's efforts brought in about $7,300. Spooner was arrested last Tuesday and released after he posted bond. He was fired by 92.3 The Fan last week, according to a spokesman for the station.

PIERRE BOUVARD: Pandora Is Clueless About In-Car Listening

7

THE MOUTH, APRILL 11TH, 2016 –– In his most recent blog, Pierre Bouvard, Chief Marketing Officer of Cumulus Media and Westwood One, responds to Pandora’s recent piece on in-car listening noting that AM/FM crushes Pandora in the car. AM/FM has a 72% share of listening in the car, according to Edison Research. AM/FM holds 93% of the lead-in audience during commercials breaks, according to Arbitron/Nielsen and Media Monitors. Plus, 74% of in-car listeners say they mostly keep turned to one station or only occasionally change the station, according to Edison Research.

Bouvard adds, most channel switches Edison observed do not count in Nielsen ratings. Nielsen requires at least five minutes of listening in a fifteen minute period for audience credit. AM/FM is the soundtrack of the American worker. Pandora wishes they were used in the car; but barely anyone listens. Pandora’s bigger issue is YouTube and Spotify and hoping that they don’t become the MySpace of streaming audio. SEE ENTIRE BLOG HERE

Phlash Phelps Surprised With Billboard For 50th Birthday

7

THE MOUTH, APRIL 11TH, 2016 –– SiriusXM '60'S On 6' host Phlash Phelps has apparently endeared himself to listeners in Scranton Pennsylvania as he found his face on area billboards for his 50th birthday reports timesleader.com. Currently, Phelps is on a mission to visit all 50 states in the next year and had passed through Scranton on Sunday. Doreen Yakoski, of Springville, worked for Lamar for 19 years and was the charting manager when she pitched the idea to feature Phelps on a space.

“I was listening to his show as I do every day, and people call in from all across the country,” Yakoski said. After hearing Phelps take a caller from Scranton to discuss the Steamtown National Historical Site and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Yakoski realized he’d spent time in the area. She went to general manager Tom Donohue with a proposition. Donohue, also a fan of Phelps’ show, consented to the idea, and Phelps traveled to Scranton to see the advertisement. “The fact that Lamar right there in Scranton wanted to do that for me is incredible,” Phelps said. A Baltimore native who worked at 16 different radio stations before landing his gig at Sirius, Phelps was bitten by the travel bug in his 20s. “I had 47 states finished by the time I was 29,” Phelps said. “In the last 10 years, I’ve been to all 50, but I’ve never been to all 50 in a calendar year.” Pennsylvania is scheduled as Phelps’ second state. Yakoski said Scranton is essentially kicking off the radio host’s country wide expedition.
