'Radio Is What Drivers Want Most,' Says NAB's Gordon Smith

7

THE MOUTH, APRIL 19TH, 2016 –– In yesterday's opening keynote at the NAB being held in Las Vegas, NAB chief Gordon Smith said Radio’s future lies in being available on every device and making choices that support its innovations. “Everyone listens to the radio. But not everyone listens in the same way.” Though Boomers, Gen X’ers and Millennials all spend a lot of time listening to radio, a recent Nielsen report notes that “Millennials have the greatest mass of listenership.” Some 66-and a half million of them use the radio each week. Radio’s audience continues to evolve, and we must continue to evolve with them. Broadcasters have worked tirelessly to promote access to radio receivers in smartphones.

As an industry, we are also focused on ensuring radio’s rightful place in the automotive dashboard of the future. A recent study on the connected car reveals that radio is indispensable to drivers – it is the most used and most important audio source by far. And while many drivers desire interactive features, the great majority also want a traditional radio interface. We know that radio is what drivers want most, and we’ll also ensure that Detroit knows it. We must and we will continue to retain our rightful place in the automobile, offering not just the radio everyone knows, loves and expects, but, also providing our interactive experience for those listeners who desire it." Cumulus Files Counter-Lawsuit Against Former Saginaw Hosts

THE MOUTH, APRILL 19TH, 2016 –– Cumulus Media has filed a counter-lawsuit against former WHNN-FM Saginaw, MI. radio personalities Johnny Burke and Blondie reports mlive.com. Attorneys for the Cumulus, which owns the station, also want a federal judge to issue an injunction barring the hosts from hosting their current internet-based radio show. Cumulus attorneys state Burke and Blondie are in violation of non-compete and non-solicitation clauses in their employment agreements that they entered into with Cumulus and/or Citadel Broadcasting, the former owner of WHNN-FM.

The attorneys allege the hosts have "repeatedly and intentionally" violated those agreements since their Jan. 15 firing by using Cumulus' "confidential, proprietary information" as they broadcast "Johnny and Blondie Live" and solicit "Cumulus' sponsors and employees." The hosts, Cumulus alleges, "have recently initiated a course of conduct that can only be interpreted as intentional 'taunting' of Cumulus, underscoring the bad faith and malice behind (their) actions." The counter-complaint and injunction motion comes after age-discrimination lawsuits were filed by Johnny & Blondie, against their former employer. In the counter-claims, Cumulus points to employment agreements signed in June 2012, which establishes that 5 percent of his yearly income is "in exchange for (him) agreeing to be bound by" language related to exclusivity conduct both during his employment and after. His six-month non-compete clause bars him from engaging in "any activity the same or essentially the same as (his job duties) for any competing business" within 50 miles of WHNN's transmitter in Fairgrove. JACOBS TECH STUDY 12: 'We're Living In A On-Demand World'

7

THE MOUTH, APRIL 18TH, 2016 –– In Jacobs Media's new web study of radio listeners, the big story is on-demand media consumption. Starting in television where a cultural change is taking place with video on-demand and binge viewing, podcasting and on-demand audio are experiencing impressive gains. From Boomers to Millennials, different patterns of consumption emerge, 7providing radio broadcasters with information from which they can map out game plans and strategies. TS12 was conducted from January 19-February 22 of this year. As Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs says this year, we see strong signs that podcasting may emerge as a game-changer for broadcasters. This new survey also includes preferred podcasting categories for each format audience, providing a guide to station content creators. More and more consumers own connected televisions, and their chan7ging video consumption signals similar increases for on-demand audio.

Every broadcaster should be developing a podcasting content strategy." Techsurvey12's Media Usage Pyramid shows the continued rise of mobile, as well as increases for both Smart TV and podcasting." Among numerous takeaways, the reports that more than 90% of respondents spend at least one hour a day with radio and/or television. Plus, the mobile revolution marches on - More than eight in ten respondents (84%) now own a smartphone and two-thirds (66%) now have a tablet.

Jacobs tells Jockline, "The revolution in TV with on-demand viewing is moving over to radio. Podcasting is shaping up to be "the next big thing." Techsurvey12 was powered by NuVoodoo who provided analytical and platform support. DOWNLOAD SLIDE DECK HERE
