Chicago Station Renames Show Segment After Legal Action

THE MOUTH, APRIL 24TH, 2018 –– Chicago media blogger Robert Feder reports that B96 was threatening to sue Michelle “Showbiz Shelly” Menaker's new employer if she kept calling her daily pop-culture quiz the “Showbiz Shelly Smackdown.” A cease-and-desist order then forced iHeart's WKSC 7103.5-FM to rename Menaker’s segment to “Showbiz Showdown” on the morning show hosted by Christopher “Fred” Frederick and Angi Taylor. B96 PD Todd Cavanah called the move “standard and contractual. We own the name. . . . It’s really simple.”

Frederick told Kiss FM listeners: “I think it’s a low blow. I think it’s a low, low blow. . . . So dumb. Get a life, guys. Focus on your issues over there, right?” For her part, Menaker said, “I’m trying to put a positive spin on it, right? Maybe this is a good opportunity. It’s a new chapter. Maybe it’s a good time for a new name for it.” Feder adds, Menaker has a trademark on her “Showbiz Shelly” name.

REPORT: Mike Francesa Says 'It's Time To Return To WFAN' Amid Motivation

7

THE MOUTH, APRIL 24TH, 2018 –– No word yet from officials at WFAN, but after The New York Post reported on Monday that longtime WFAN host Mike Francesa 'Desperately missed radio' and is interested in a return, he tells Newsday, 'He's coming home.' Newsday's Neil Best says he plans to return to WFAN in some capacity following the New York Post report. "It is time to return to WFAN," Francesa told Best, adding, "I have been working on a project with the talent/entertainment agency CAA for months. That will be explained in the days ahead. ... I will do everything to work WFAN into an integral part of the project."

Francesa didn't offer specifics, but he also referenced a "campaign" to prevent him from returning to WFAN in his interview with Best - one that seems to have given him the necessary motivation to re-join the station. "This is for those who started this campaign in recent days. I didn't decide to go back to WFAN until I was told I better not go back," he said. "For those behind it, that was the moment I decided to return." The Post's Andrew Marchand reported Monday Francesa or representatives from his camp had had discussions with ESPN Radio New York and WOR. Marchand also said a return to WFAN could not be ruled out. Francesa left WFAN back in December 15 after 30 years and was replaced Chris Carlin, Maggie Gray and Bart Scott. Since his departure from the Fan, Francesa reunited with his former co-host, Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, for an episode of "High Heat" on MLB Network. They teamed on WFAN from 1989 to 2008. “I’ll tell ya right now, though, there may be nobody on FAN before you know it. I guarantee it,” Russo said as the two former co-hosts cracked up laughing. Boomer Esiason and other station hosts weren't laughing and were quick to return fire.
