Atlanta Sports Show Sacked After Mocking Player With ALS [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, JUNE 18TH, 2013 –– The entire cast of the popular Mayhem in The AM Show on 790 The Zone/Atlanta has been fired after mocking a former NFL player who has Lou Gehrig's disease. Two of the hosts, featuring Steak Shapiro and Chris Dimino took a call from cast member, Nick Cellini (shown below), who pretended to be Steve Gleason (left), a former NFL player who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Using an automated sounding voice, the host told a series of jokes and then asked the two others to do him a favor by smothering him. The station’s SVP/GM, Rick Mack, quickly issued an apology saying “"We deeply regret the offensive programming that aired this morning on “5Mayhem In The AM” on 790 The Zone, related to former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason and his battle with ALS." While first posting that the trio was suspended, it was later amended to say they had since been terminated of their employment. All three the fired hosts then tweeted their own apologies on Monday evening. Gleason will always be remembered for his blocked punt for the Saints on the night the New Orleans Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina. In 2011, Steve was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), considered a terminal neuro-muscular disease. LISTEN TO AUDIO POSTED FROM THE TICKET/NEW ORLEANS

Ascap Williams Calls Pandora's Radio Purchase A 'Stunt' [AUDIO]

THE MOUTH, JUNE 17TH, 2013 –– Pandora surprised the industry last week with its purchase of KXMZ-FM, a small station in Rapid City, Iowa. Presumably, the move was intended to give the Internet radio broadcaster a better edge of royalty rate. This prompted a quick legal challenge from BMI and Ascap. According to 5NPR'S WEEKEND EDITION, Paul Williams, the president of ASCAP, says broadcasters pay the same in royalties for radio and streaming because those streams account for a tiny portion of their audience. "The fact is," he says, "they're very, very different models. Internet radio and terrestrial radio use music and generate revenue in different ways." He says Pandora's purchase of KXMZ isn't going to reduce its rates. "This is what I would refer to as a stunt, a way to do an end run to reduce the price of what they pay just one more little notch." Blake Morgan (shown), whose song "Better Angels" was among a number of his songs that got about 28,000 plays on Pandora. "The song earned $1.62 in royalties over a 90-day period on Pandora," he says, "which is a very typical rate." Pandora's attorney, Christopher Harrison says "Pandora shouldn't be discriminated against simply because we don't own a radio station," he says. So, (last) week they purchased KXMZ. Morgan says "I have a new record coming out — most people have new records coming out," he says. "These are things that we've worked on for months, if not years, and we're not looking to be paid unfairly. We're simply looking for a fair working wage for the music that we make."

Elton John & Billy Joel Make Nice At Songwriters Hall of Fame Event; Joel Blamed it On Pianist Envy

THE MOUTH, JUNE 17TH, 2013 –– In case you weren't aware, Billy Joel and Elton John have had an ongoing feud the last couple of years following a 15 years of touring together. At last Thursday night's Songwriters Hall of Fame 2013 induction ceremony in New York, it appears the pair kissed and made up (so to speak) direct from stage. “I didn't see you tonight Mr. Joel, but I love you dearly," Elton said from the stage after he and Bernie Taupin accepted the Johnny Mercer Award. Shortly afterward, Joel took the stage to induct Foreigner’s Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. There he asked “Is Elton still here,” he asked. “I tried to get over to his table, but some girl came up and said ‘Remember when you threw me in the pool?’ If he’s still here, call me. It’s the same phone number. We’re fine. It’s probably just pianist envy.” In 2011, John told Rolling Stone Joel keeps canceling concerts due to illnesses and various other things, but added "He’s gone to rehab, but they’ve been rehab light. When I went to rehab, I had to clean the floors.” According to hitfix.com, In a piece in last month's New York Times Joel responded by saying, “That’s his opinion. I don’t do it because I don’t wanna. He tends to shoot off his mouth...Maybe he’s trying to motivate me, to get me mad or something. He’s kind of like a mom.”
