[LISTEN] Steve Dahl, Mike Veeck Relive 'Disco Demolition' With Tom Barnard; And Yes, Dahl 'Still Hates Disco'

7

THE MOUTH, JULY 14TH, 2016 –– This week crossed the 37th anniversary of radio's infamous 'Disco Demoltion' spearheaded by then WLUP host Steve Dahl and Chicago White Sox' s Mike Veeck. Both of them rang up 92 KQRS Minneapolis' iconic host Tom Banard to discuss how the whole even actually came about and why Dahl first expressed concerns about how it would play out.

7Mike Veeck (pronounced Veck) was the Promotion Director for the Chicago White Sox, Steve Dahl was making noise as America’s first “shock jock” (sorry Howard), in July of 1979 as they both made history with “Disco Demolition” arguably the most notable radio station “stunt” ever. "I hated disco -- I still hate disco," Dahl joked. "At about 10:03 I was standing at (Veeck's door)," says Dahl. "You wanna do that at Comisky Park?" he asked. Veeck said "We did that in Indiana and had about 3 or 4 thousand people." "Three or four thousand people for the White Sox for the way we're playing that would be huge!, let's do it!" Dahl shouted. But Dahl wondered then how that number of people would really stand out against the stadium's backdrop. "I tried to get out of it several times," says Dahl, "But obviously that didn't happen and I was wrong. Disco Demolition Night took place on July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. It featured a twi-night doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers.

White Sox officials had hoped for a crowd of 20,000, about 5,000 more than usual. Instead, at least 50,000 people attended and the second game was initially postponed, but later forfeited to the Tigers by order of American League president Lee MacPhail. [WATCH] Radio Host/Comedian D.L. Hugley Joins With Chris Cuomo & Megyn Kelly To Talk Police And Race Relations

7

THE MOUTH, JULY 14TH, 2016 –– Reach syndicated host D.L. Hughley, host of The K.L. Hughley Show, hit the TV trail yesterday to spoke to discuss the recent police shootings and Dallas ambush. Speaking with CNN's Chri Cuomo he slammed former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani over his recent comments regarding the black community, saying he is in no position to tell African-Americans how to behave. "To tell black people to speak a certain way and act a certain way is no different than telling a woman how to dress so she doesn't get raped."

"I value human life, whether it was a blue uniform or has black skin," said Hughley, emphasizing that people can mourn the deaths of police officers and still recognize "that black people have always been brutalized by police." Last night, he joined Fox New's Megyn Kelly where things got a bit heated after Hughley said “The only place racism doesn’t exist is Fox News and the police department,” he said. “That’s absolutely true.” - WATCH CNN INTERVIEW HERE

2 months ago, we had 3,000 likes on facebook. We are about to break 8,000 soon," says Shawn Wheat

THE MOUTH, JULY 14TH, 2016 –– WIBW Topeka's Shawn Wheat and his digital team have started producing video newscasts, but with a twist,' writes TVSpy's Kevin Eck. “I have a TV background, then moved into radio when I was told I was too fat to be on-air,” says Wheat. “But this is something we have pioneered here, and hope to move it across the entire Alpha media company.

Radio War Breaks Out in Sydney - Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson from the KIIS-FM Sydney breakfast show are at war with radio rivals Nova. KIIS newsreader Brooklyn Ross told Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O that he had heard that Nova newsreader Matt DeGroot had been “saying s*it about the newsreaders on KIIS”, it’s fair to say the duo didn’t take things lying down. Kyle and Jackie O rang the Nova switchboard and then demanded to speak to DeGroot, who at the time was reading the news. DeGroot was unfortunately “too busy” to go on a rival station to get shouted at, so Kyle tried Paul Jackson the head of content for Nova’s personal mobile and ended up getting through to voicemail. Summer Radio Has a Classic Feel To It Reports Nielsen

7

THE MOUTH, JULY 13TH, 2016 –– As we head into the dog days of summer, American radio airwaves are taking on a classic feel. In each of the past two summer rating periods, the Classic Hits format has grown its share of national listening than any other format. The release of Nielsen’s June portable people meter (PPM) survey results affirm the gains of not only Classic Hits, but of the Classic Rock format as well. Despite trailing Classic Hits in audience share among listeners 6 and older in June, Classic Rock had a strong showing among both Millennials (tying last summer’s record 4.8% share) and adults 25-54 (registering its highest share since a year ago). This June marks the fourth straight summer that the format has matched or increased its share in a year-over-year comparison.

7Classic Rock - Jun 2013 Jun 2014 Jun 2015 Jun 2016 Persons 6+ 4.4% 4.8% 5.3% 5.3% Persons 18-34 3.7% 3.9% 4.8%* 4.8%* Persons 25-54 4.7% 5.4% 5.8% 5.7% *Record high Source: Nielsen The summertime radio listening story isn’t complete without mentioning Classic Hits, and in June the format posted higher results across all three of the demographics. But the real story lies in the historical comparisons to where Classic Hits stood in past years. June 2016 marks the format’s highest June share in PPM measurement, and bodes well for the rest of the summer. If in a few months’ time if Classic Hits is once again crowned the “format of the summer,” it will mark the third consecutive year it has held this title.

7

Classic Hits - Jun 2013 Jun 2014 Jun 2015 Jun 2016 Persons 6+ 5.4% 5.4% 5.4% 5.5% Persons 18-34 3.4% 3.5% 3.4% 4.0% Persons 25-54 4.8% 4.6% 4.7% 4.9% Source: Nielsen.

Finally, sticking to historical comparisons we can also see that the Country format in June—perennially a summertime gainer—saw some of the lowest shares we’ve captured in several years. In 2013, Country claimed the title of “format of the summer” after a big mid-year ratings boost; it then carried that momentum into the next year before cooling off, and Country has yet to regain those same levels of audience share in PPM markets in the past few years. representative populations. Could Old Radio Series Come Back To Haunt Trump?

THE MOUTH, JULY 13TH, 2016 –– Much has been said about presumptive GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump's long-ago interview on The Howard Stern Show, but somehow overlooked was his 7one-time syndicated daily 60-second radio commentary "Trumped' between 2004 and 2008. It aired on hundred of radio stations across the U.S. and, according to The Wall Street Journal, his daily thoughts ranged from current events, relationships, women and politics.

Among the outakes now making the rounds have Trump saying Hillary Clinton would “make a good president.” He also discussed divorce and the relationship between the sexes in Saudi Arabia. Buzzfeed, in a story about the radio show published in March, reported some of the transcripts and also included a demo audio file that promoted the show. The Wall Street Journal tracked down more audio recordings. they also found nearly 200 full and partial transcripts on archived web pages.

Study: Millenials Opting For Streaming; On-Demand Options

7

THE MOUTH, JULY 13TH, 2016 –– A study released yesterday by the Music Business Association and data analysis firm LOOP (Lots of Online People) confirms that millennials are turning their ears to more and more streaming. According to Forbes, the study contained answers from over 3,000 respondents, and the results focus on younger millennials, which in this case are defined as those between the ages of 15 and 19 (as of May 2016). Many of those polled also opted for on-demand options.

According to the report, on-demand streaming (such as Spotify and Apple AAPL +0.48% Music) accounts for 51% of a younger millennial’s daily listening. Regular AM/FM radio still brings in plenty of people, accounting for 35% of the general population’s listening on any given day. Younger millennials say that they only spend around 12% of their time with radio. For younger millenials, it’s all about smartphones and other connected devices for the younger crowds. These devices are now responsible for 41% of their listening, which is much higher than the average when taking into account all age groups, which is just 18%.

According to a report from Nielsen released last summer, 245 million Americans tuned into a radio at least once during the second quarter of 2015, which represents an incredible 91% of people 12 and older.
