VoxPro To Pit Jock Against Jock At Morning Show Boot Camp 28 Atlanta

THE MOUTH, JULY 26TH, 2016 –– It takes one to know one. And no one knows how to personalize radio better than Caffeinated Radio’s Jason Pullman (far left) and Power 96-1’s Maddox (left), who will be judging the upcoming VoxPro skills competition during Morning Show Boot Camp in Atlanta next month. The two are among Atlanta’s best-known radio personalities and will be making the final call for this year’s VoxPro challenge, which pits jock against jock in a test of editing skills using the VoxPro recording/editing system.

The competition will take place at the VoxPro booth, where competitors will sit down with a VoxPro audio recorder/editor to edit a two-minute master file using VoxPro recording and editing tools. They will be able to crank up, scrub out, insert record and add special effects – in short, do all the moves typical of a fast-paced radio show, only with a prize at the end! Maddox and Pullman, both self-described VoxPro power users, will judge entries based on speed, creativity and how much of their personality they can inject into a final cut. “Technology, fun, and a little friendly competition between jocks; this is right up my alley and it’s going to be a lot of fun!” says Maddox, who is known for making listeners a part of his afternoon show (4 to 8 p.m.) on Atlanta’s #1 Hit Music Station, Power 96.1. “Could get interesting,” agreed Jason Pullman, who keeps things lively as half of morning show Caffeinated Radio on 94.9 The Bull, Atlanta. The VoxPro skill competition will take place August 11 and 12 at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead in Atlanta. The lucky winner will take home a version of the new VoxPro6 software with GapBuster automatic silence removal, multi-track editing and detachable Hotkeys panel.

Qualified talent can enter the VoxPro skills competition by registering HERE. All registered entries will receive a free T-shirt that can be picked up at the VoxPro booth during Morning Show Boot Camp. Staff will also be available during the conference to provide free editing tips and hands-on VoxPro coaching.

WOR To Rebroadcast Mike Piazza Home Run From 9/21/11

7

THE MOUTH, JULY 26TH, 2016 –– This Thursday night, 710 WOR-AM, the New York Mets’ radio flagship station, will once again open the vaults to re-air the now-iconic game from September 21, 2001, in which Mike Piazza hit the first home run for a New York team after the terrorist attacks of September 11. This special rebroadcast will serve as a lead-up to Saturday evening’s ceremony at Citi Field in which the Mets will retire newly-minted Hall of Famer Piazza’s number.

Howie Rose, the lead radio voice of the Mets, said, “The Mets-Braves game of September 21st, 2001 was perhaps the most unique sporting event in New York City history. Just ten days after the attacks which took down the World Trade Center and killed nearly three thousand people, it was with great trepidation that many of us made our way to Shea Stadium.” “A crowd of over forty thousand people had not gathered in one place in New York over the previous week and a half, and there was a palpable nervousness in the ballpark. Until Mike Piazza changed the narrative .. Fifteen years later, that home run still provides solace, warmth, and yes, sheer happiness. Hopefully this rebroadcast provides a bit of that," said Rose.

Jumpstarting A Personality Show? 'It's About The Big Event' Says Fred Jacobs

"It’s not every day when personalities have a golden opportunity to shine because of an external story or event"

THE MOUTH, JULY 25TH, 2016 –– While most pundits were buzzing last week about the various speeches or comments made during the GOP convention in Cleveland, A LOT of other buzz came courtesy of Jon Stewart's guest hosting on CBS' Late Show with his former Comedy Central Cohort Stephen Colbert.

In answering how long it should take a for a new PD to have an impact on a station, its big show, or its brand health, consultant/media visionary Fred Jacobs points out in his latest blog to CBS 'Late Show “showrunner” Chris Licht (below). Having previously written in his blog about Chris getting the “PD” job on a show that sorely 7needed a jumpstart this past April, he writes: "last week, Colbert and team stepped up and started to make the kind of noise and create the type of content that can turn what appeared 7to be a miscalculation on the network’s part into a contender. And Licht engineered this feat in the same way that great programmers are tasked with establishing a weak brand or breathing life into a tired personality."

"It’s about the big event," says Jacobs. "It’s not every day when personalities and shows have a golden opportunity to shine because of an external story or event. That was the case with Colbert’s team who correctly saw the Republican National Convention as that moment in time. Looking back, the buzz about last week’s happening in Cleveland had been long anticipated. Most observers expected it to be an unpredictable, news-making event. And it didn’t disappoint. Pointing out what radio stations needs to know from this experience, he suggest 'Takin risks." "The decision was made to do something that really hasn’t been done since Colbert moved to the late night hours on CBS-TV: he adopted his popular “Colbert Report” persona." REPORT: Beasley Not Messing With Its Top Personalities In Philadelphia Following Acquisition Says CEO

“That’s what we’re paying for. Why tear that apart?”

THE MOUTH, JULY 25TH, 2016 –– Caroline Beasley, interim CEO and current CFO of Beasley Broadcast Group is not going to kick your favorite radio personalities to the curb,' writes 7Jonathan Takiff of philly.com. Beasley tells Takiff, “these are iconic Philadelphia brands with wonderful talent and listeners with whom they have an emotional bond and connection. Why would we get rid of a Preston and Steve or a John DeBella?” (citing the morning show hosts on WMMR and WMGK, respectively). “That’s what we’re paying for. Why tear that apart?” As for the current state of radio, Beasley says, “It’s a much more competitive business than it was 10 or 20 years ago. Our listeners have many more options, though more than 90 percent of the population still tunes in to radio” (at least once) “every week.” Beasley cited. “We know we have to adopt and change to the needs of our listeners and advertisers. Now we’re over the air, on line and on mobile apps. We’re not just selling spots, we want to be marketing consultants to our advertisers, to help them make their business grow.”

As reported last week, in connection with the acquisition, Beasley will initially acquire 21 radio stations in seven markets including four new markets (Detroit, MI; Middlesex, NJ; Monmouth, NJ; and, Morristown , NJ ) and three markets where the Company has existing operations (Philadelphia, PA; Boston, MA; and, Charlotte , NC ). Beasley intends to divest certain radio stations in Charlotte, NC to obtain FCC approval of the proposed transaction.

Broadcasters Applaud DOJ's Proposed Anti-Trust Consent Decrees Regulating ASCAP & BMI

THE MOUTH, JULY 25TH, 2016 –– Representatives of local radio and television broadcasters expressed support for the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) proposed conclusions in its multi-year review of antitrust consent decrees regulating two of the nation’s largest music performing rights organizations in comments filed last week. The review concluded that no modifications were warranted to the decrees affecting the songwriter royalties collected by American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), and that ASCAP and BMI should 7continue to offer licenses that provide broadcasters and other users full rights to the musical works in those licensing organizations’ repertories.

Music industry interests have contended in recent public statements that the DOJ’s conclusions represent a radical departure from past practice that will disrupt the orderly licensing of music performance rights. In their comments, the broadcasters concluded that, “there is no reason to anticipate the kind of license turmoil” predicted by the music industry in the future. Instead, local radio and television broadcasters remain prepared to carry on business as usual: negotiating and entering into the same forms of license arrangements they have always maintained, and providing fair compensation to music copyright owners.

“America’s hometown radio and television broadcasters applaud the Justice Department’s apparent conclusion not to modify the ASCAP and BMI consent decrees after a careful and thorough review,” said NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith. “Contrary to reports otherwise, this expected decision maintains the fundamental antitrust safeguards for the licensing of musical works – to the benefit of copyright owners, users, and consumers – and does not jeopardize the longstanding and successful relationship that broadcasters have had with ASCAP, BMI, and the copyright owners they represent.
