REPORT: Jack Diamond Leaving WLS-FM

THE MOUTH, JULY 31ST, 2015 –– Insiders tell crm.com that Jack Diamond's morning show stint on WLS-FM has come to an end. Reportedly, his final show was last Friday before returning home to Washington, D.C. for vacation. Diamond, who spent 24 years handling mornings at Cumulus' sister station WRQX-FM Wash. DC, arrived in Chicago to co-host mornings with Brant Miller on WLS-FM on November 3, 2014. In late December, Diamond returned home to Washington, D.C. for a two-week Christmas break but didn't return in January as planned. Rather, Diamond decided over the break to have surgery to help repair a diverticulitis issue which was causing severe pain. Following surgery on January 20th, Diamond took the rest of the winter off to recover and didn't return to WLS-FM until April 6th.

This latest reported move follows the recent announcement of John Records Landecker announcing he would be voluntarily signing off his night slot with the station. crm.com reports that Cumulus Media Chicago management already had meetings with possible new morning show hosts earlier this year -- including with a certain radio duo who previously turned down the job.

Wise Brother Media Releases First-Ever Social Media Study

THE MOUTH, JULY 31ST, 2015 ––Wise Brother Media has released to the public its first-ever social media study, which they formerly conducted as a service for members of its Studio Think Tank. The study analyzed the fan reach and engagement of over 13,000 Facebook posts published on 40 radio station and morning show pages over a three-month period. "The results were fascinating, and in many ways unexpected," said Wise Brother Media's Vice President of Marketing, Natasha Crain, who led the research. "There's a lot of conventional wisdom tossed around about what works and doesn't work on a Facebook page. Much of what we found flies in the face of that, however.

Among the many take-aways, Crain tells Jockline, "There were many surprising results in the findings. As one example, we found that the difference in fan growth between pages had little to do with how well the pages were reaching and engaging fans. The pages growing most quickly were realizing that growth due to their efforts through other channels (e.g., on-air promotion of their Facebook page). To give you one other example, most page owners believe that they need to post frequently throughout the day to maximize reach in the news feed of their fans. We found that posting more than four times per day does nothing to increase reach and can actually have a strong negative impact on engagement (likes, shares, and comments).

As for mistakes stations often make with their Facebook pages right now, Crain says "I could point to a lot of things, but I'd say the top three are these. First, page managers think it's a big win when they have "viral" posts that are shared with tens of thousands of people. Our study showed those posts do very, very little to actually grow a page. Second, most pages are posting way too frequently and are actually hurting their engagement because of it. Third, page managers are relying too heavily on certain types of posts (e.g., photos). Diversity is key.

THE MOUTH, JULY 31ST, 2015 –– Looks like ESPN Radio isn't wasting any time filling a slightly ahead of schedule exit of Colin Cowherd’s former slot. Leaving a week ahead of his planned departure today, July 31st, awfulannouncing.com reports that ESPN Radio intends to fill the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET for the next month with three different teams (Steve Mason and John Ireland from ESPN LA 710 have been subbing in Cowherd’s former spot this week.)

During the first week of August (beginning Aug. 3), Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley (R) will follow Mike & Mike for the late-morning/early-afternoon part of the ESPN Radio day. They currently host an afternoon show in LA on ESPN 710.

For the next two weeks (beginning Aug. 10 and 17), Michelle Beadle (L) will co-host from Los Angeles with Ben Lyons of ESPN LA. Closing out August in the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET slot will be Tom Waddle and Mark Silverman, who host Waddle & Silvy on ESPN 1000 in Chicago from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. CT.

Thousands Of Dollars Pour In For Injured Spokane Morning Host

As of Wednesday, More Than $35,000 Raised From 700 Donors

THE MOUTH, JULY 30TH, 2015 –– Following this week's heartbreaking news of KZZU/Spokane's Ken Hopkin's bike accident which left him partially paralyzed, comes word that the community has now raised thousands of dollars for him since Monday. Hopkins is a co-host on KZZU's highly popular "Ken, Dave and Molly" morning show. As of Wednesday evening, krem.com reports the account had raised more than $35,000 from 700 different donors.

"I consider myself very lucky to be surrounded by positive people with support from my family, my radio family and my friends inside and outside of the Spokane area," said Hopkins. As Jockline reported, Hopkins was partially paralyzed in a bicycle accident on July 13 and wrote "As of now, I am left without the use of my legs and I have no feeling from my mid chest down," said Hopkins. He said he hopes to regain some functions once the swelling goes down and damages heal. He also said a return to KZZU is one of his highest priorities.
