Greg 'Opie' Hughes Gone From SiriusXM

THE MOUTH, JULY 7TH, 2017 –– First tipped yesterday morning by the website interrobang.com, SiriusXM later confirmed in a statement that it had ended its relationship with afternoon host Gregg ‘Opie’ Hughes, of the ‘Opie Radio Show.' In the brief statement, SiriusXM added "that it does not publicly discuss internal personnel issues.” The news comes nearly three years after Opie's longtime co-host Anthony Cumia was abruptly pulled off the show following a series of racially-insensitive tweets.

Opie Radio show regular Sherrod Small (R) later teased on Twitter, “Shows not over, just not on SiriusXM.” Opie Radio has been airing from 3 to 6 pm ET on the Faction channel since October 2016 along with regular friends of the show restaurateur Carl Ruiz, and comedians Sherrod Small, and Vic Henley.

Opie was co-host of Opie and Anthony show for twenty years until 2014 when his longtime partner Anthony Cumia was let go. Since leaving SiriusXM, Anthony started his own podcast network, Compound Media. Opie then co-hosted a short-lived Opie and Jim (Jim) Norton show from July 3, 2014 until October 2015. Norton then teamed up with former producer Sam Roberts and took over the morning slot, as Hughes moved to afternoons. In January SiriusXM renamed the channel from Opie Radio to Faction Talk. In February, Opie joked that he might get fired after he made news by taunting SiriusXM colleague Howard Stern, by sneaking into his 'off limits' hallway at SiriusXM (L). Earlier today, Opie tweeted 'Won't be sitting out long.' Stay tuned.

Entercom Chief, David Field, To Be Honored With National Award

THE MOUTH, JULY 7TH, 2017 –– David Field, president and chief executive officer of Entercom Communications Corporation, will receive the National Radio Award during the Radio Luncheon on Wednesday, September 6. NJ Gov. Christie To Fill In For Francesa On WFAN New York

THE MOUTH, JULY 7TH, 2017 –– Following this week's highly publicized 4th of July family beach outing, NJ Gov. Christie will be headed to the safe harbor of hosting duties on WFAN New York's afternoon show for 2 days next week reports northjersey.com. And could the temporary move turn into one that's more permanent? Mark Chernoff (R), WFAN's program director and vice president of CBS Radio New York, said he "would certainly at least want to consider" Governor Christie as a replacement for Francesa.

Christie is scheduled to sit in as a guest host on sports-talk radio station WFAN 660-AM New York on Monday and Tuesday instead of afternoon host Mike Francesa, the radio station posted on its website. The two days Christie will be on the radio could be an audition as Francesa is set to leave the station once his contract ends later this year. Christie will host the 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. show along with WFAN's Evan Roberts. Chernoff, the station's program director and vice president of its parent company, CBS Radio New York, previously told the Record he would consider the governor, whose term ends in January 2018. NIELSEN: For Eighth Consecutive Year, Country Radio Still Top Format In 2016

THE MOUTH, JULY 6TH, 2017 –– For the 8th Consecutive year, country radio has remained the top format. In Nielsen’s new Audio Today Report, it took stock of the top radio formats in America last year, and, once again, Country came out on top when ranked by share of total listening.

According to our analysis, 13.6% of all radio listening in the U.S. went to a Country-formatted station. Country has been the top-ranked format since 2009; the last time it was bested was in 2008, when News/Talk was the top format by share of audience.

News/Talk held steady at No. 2 last year, followed by Pop Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR), Adult Contemporary and Classic Rock. SEE REPORT HERE

NAB Urges FCC To 'Modernize' Regulation

THE MOUTH, JULY 6TH, 2017 –– In an effort to eliminate burdens that divert broadcast stations’ scarce resources away from programming and other services that benefit the public, the NAB has launched it Modernization of Media Regulation Initiative. The initiative says such reform is especially important for smaller stations with fewer financial and personnel resources. The modification or elimination of a number of broadcasters’ existing regulatory burdens will in no way reduce radio and TV stations’ incentives to serve their local audiences with responsive programming. Indeed, the incentives of broadcasters to offer programming attracting the widest possible audiences have never been greater, given intense and ever-increasing competition from multichannel and online audio and video providers.

It adds, these dramatic and continuing changes in the competitive environment over the past several decades obligate the Commission, under the Communications Act of 1934 , to reexamine its existing broadcast regulations will ensure they still serve the public interest. The FCC also has an affirmative obligation under the Paperwork Reduction Act and the Regulatory Flexibility Act to reduce paperwork and administrative burdens on broadcast licensees and to minimize the economic impact of its regulations on small broadcasters -- As the Commission has previously done by modernizing certain broadcast regulation s to take advantage of the Internet, it should reform other outdated rules to permit broadcasters to utilize online methods of providing notice, including giving the requisite public notices associated with various types of broadcast applications. 1 READ COMPLETE INITIATIVE HERE

Radio's Kix Brooks Working On Another Film For The Hallmark Channel

THE MOUTH, JULY 6TH, 2017 –– Kix Brooks, known for his Westwood One syndicated 'American Country Countdown,' one half of the legendary duo Brooks & Dunn, and even his own vineyards, is co-creator of Vaquero Entertainment with his son Eric Brooks, William Shockley, Dustin Rikert and John Kuelbs. Tony Blackburn To Host Show With Nick Grimshaw For Radio 1's 50th Anniversary

THE MOUTH, JULY 6TH, 2017 –– The BBC is operating a digital pop-up radio station this September in the UK to celebrate the 50th anniversary of BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2. Tony Blackburn will be on the station, who will host a live show with Nick Grimshaw, simulcast on Radio 1 and Radio 2 on September 30th from 8.30am. Tony will also recreate the opening of BBC Radio 1, including ‘Flowers in the Rain’ by The Move, famously the first song ever played on Radio 1. This show will be broadcast live from 7:00am on Radio 1 Vintage and Radio 2 (as a part of Sounds of the Sixties).

Simon Barnett leaving More FM in New Zealand after 20 years - New Zealand radio veteran Simon Barnett has announced he will be retiring from breakfast and music radio at the end of next year. Over a quarter of a century of breakfast radio has finally led Barnett to call it a day, opting not to renew his contract with More FM and MediaWorks when it expires. Instead, he will be taking up a non-breakfast position as host on Newstalk ZB.

Shaun Doherty Is Leaving Highland Radio In Donegal Ireland - Highland Radio’s mid-morning presenter Shaun Doherty has announced on-air that he is leaving the station. Shaun shared the news on air, saying “It is time for me to look for fresh challenges in my life, new opportunities. I will be leaving on July 14th. So, I wanted you as my loyal listeners to know that before you get to hear about it anywhere else.” Shaun stepped down as Managing Director of the company in 2015 having taken over the position of Acting Managing Director two years earlier.
