Cumulus Sees 21.4% Net Revenue Rise For Second Quarter

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2014 –– Cumulus Media reported its quarterly earnings this morning and showed that the company’s quarterly revenue was up 21.4% on a year-over-year basis. On an actual basis, net revenues for the three months ended June 30, 2014 increased $57.9 million, or 21.4%, to $328.2 million, compared to $270.3 million for the three months ended June 30, 2013. The increase resulted from increases of $44.1 million, $7.0 million, $2.7 million and $4.1 million in broadcast advertising, digital advertising, political advertising and license fees and other revenue, respectively. These increases were primarily attributable to the addition of the operations of WestwoodOne, which was acquired by the Company in December 2013. The increases were partially offset by decreases in local spot and national spot revenue. The increase in political advertising was due to additional activity associated with mid-term and gubernatorial elections in the current period. READ FULL REPORT HERE

Pandora Cuts Direct Licensing Deal With Artists

THE MOUTH, AUGUST 6TH, 2014 –– AP reports that Pandora has cut a direct licensing deal with artists, including independent label group Merlin that both said would mean higher payments to artists and more play for them on Pandora stations. This means artists such as Arcade Fire, Bad Religion and Lenny Kravitz could get more rotations as their representatives will be able to lobby Pandora to place their songs higher in playlists where they fit. Artists also get access to Pandora data for the first time, enabling them to make informed decisions about where to tour, who to tour with, what their concert set list should be and what songs they might release next. They will also have tools to directly communicate with fans on Pandora. Artists had complained that royalties on digital streaming services are too low. This represents a departure from its current business model, where it relies on government rate-setting bodies like the Copyright Royalty Board to determine how much it pays artists. The arrangement covers royalties for performances, not songwriting rights, and it comes as the Department of Justice is re-examining Pandora's right to automatically license song rights from publishing groups.
