M

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2013 –– As Jockline Daily reported last week, devoted Dave, Shelly & Chainsaw listeners and industry fans alike, were relieved to hear after 40 days of mysteriously being off the Dave, Shelly, and Chainsaw (DSC) show on 100.7 JACK, KFMB-FM San Diego that he would finally return this week. According to UT San Diego on Monday's show he explained "I had a moment where I realized that my life was getting away from me. I had to take time off to start eating healthy and take control of my life; it was getting out of hand.” Rickards went on to thank his wife and fellow KFMB employees who filled in for him during his break, including Program Director Mike O’Reilly, KFMB 760’s Sam the Cooking Guy, and Channel 8’s Larry Himmel and Phil Blauer.

LEW DICKEY: Radio Broadcasters Are In The Audio Content Business

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2013 –– Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey released a three page memo to is employees yesterday expanding on the recent partnership with Rdio, as well as its acquisition of Westwood One. "Digital technology has impacted virtually every aspect of our lives and perhaps nowhere as significantly as in the way we consume media," said Dickey. "In today’s digital world, Radio, Television and Newspapers have become Audio, Video and Text ... As radio broadcasters, we are really in the audio content business, distributing our local and national content to more than 90% of people in the United States for free on an ad-supported basis. This is a terrific model with high barriers to entry because you can’t start a radio station – you must buy an existing one. We believe our model is healthy and growing and we plan to continue to invest in broadcast assets." He added, Broadcast Radio is our company’s DNA, and it enables us to create some of the best audio content in the world. As technology evolves, we want to be able to distribute our content to consumers whenever, wherever and however they want to consume it," said Dickey. With regard to Rdio, he said "We will closely integrate them into our on-air and promotional strategies and will look to them as our worldwide digital distributor for our network content, including our recently announced acquisition of Westwood One-Dial Global. Congress Eyes Radio Royalties For Artists

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2013 –– In spite of growing progress between radio groups and record labels reaching royalty agreements, the long debate over how royalties should be paid when a song plays on the radio has re-emerged. According to USA Today, the primary battlefront is in Nashville, where performers, labels, songwriters, publishers and radio stations accustomed to working side-by-side have renewed their disagreement. After failing with a similar attempt in 2009, U.S. Rep. Mel Watt, D-N.C.(left), said the time for change has come. He plans to file legislation soon that would recognize performance royalties for artists and require broadcast companies to negotiate royalty arrangements with labels. "I've Mfelt that it was unfair for AM/FM stations to use the works of artists to make money for themselves without paying the artists whose stuff they're using," Watt said. The radio industry strongly disagrees saying artists and labels effectively receive free promotion when their song is broadcast, and this marketing leads to consumers buying albums, concert tickets and merchandise. Adding to the debate is the emergence of Internet radio, which does pay out a royalty to artists and labels. Luke Bryan's (shown) 2012 hit song "Drunk on You," which has 223,889 spins on terrestrial radio and has been streamed 24.9 million times according to research provided by Nielsen BDS. Bryan and his record label Capitol Records were not legally entitled to the royalties generated by his radio airplay. David Macias, president of Nashville independent record label Thirty Tigers, worried that the trend of agreements between broadcast companies and record labels could have a chilling effect on independent music if the radio stations are more inclined to play songs produced by labels with which they have business deals. He said he supported Watt's pursuit of a law.

Second Radio Guy Shares The Stage Of 'Million Second Quiz'

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2013 –– As it turned out, Brandon O'Brien didn't walk away with Ryan Seacrest-type bucks, but at least he can say the stage wasn't limited to just one radio guy. That guy would be Brandon O'Brien (shown) of Norfolk's US106.1 who joined for a short, but eventful night on Monday night's 'Million Second Quiz," hosted by Ryan Seacrest. According to WGRZ TV, Brandon said "As soon as I got into the money chair, I literally soaked in the moment. The skyline, of course, you have the empire state building behind you and I just soaked it in the hourglass, Ryan Seacrest, the audience, the cameras, and I said look, there's nobody else in the money chair right now, but me and I own it and that was my moment." As for the question: "Which NHL Hockey team had won the most Stanley Cups with 24. And growing up in Buffalo, big Sabres fan. You know a lot of hockey history, and the answer was the Montreal Canadians. I was hoping he didn't know that, but he did." Brandon returns to middays and his program duties today in Norfolk.

Jimi Hendrix's Final Interview To Air Tonight On Radio On Anniversary Of His Death

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2013 –– Hard to imagine it's been over 40 years since the death of Jimi Hendrix. Now comes word from TeamRock Radio that it will feature a half-hour exchange which took place just five days before great guitarist was found dead in 1970. According to The Telegraph, The half-hour exchange took place in London’s Cumberland Hotel five days before the iconic guitarist was found dead at an apartment in Notting Hill in 1970 at the age of 27. Keith Altham, the journalist who conducted the interview, saw Hendrix perform three days after he first arrived in England in 1966 and knew him for much of his final four years. Although Altham interviewed Hendrix eight times, he says in their final meeting he saw the musician was “rambling” and showing signs of ill health. "He had been going through a difficult period with drugs and stress and tension and the (new group) Band of Gypsys, which he had brought together, hadn’t quite come off as he’d hoped it would.” The interview will be broadcast on digital station TeamRock Radio during Nicky Horne’s Classic Rock Magazine Show at 6pm this evening. “We are delighted that Keith is allowing us to play this exceptional interview in full for all Jimi’s fans to listen to,” said Horne. “It will be quite an amazing moment.” PHOTO/Toniflap

D.C. Radio Interrupts Programming For Shooting Coverage

Fresh FM's Collis Was Unable To Reach Boyfriend Who Works In Navy Yard For Nearly An Hour

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 17TH, 2013 –– As most shows in the DC area were ending their morning shifts yesterday, news broke of the Navy Yard shooting. According dcrtv.com, DC's TV and radio news operations quickly interrupted its regular programming to provide live coverage of the shooting incidents at the Washington Navy Yard. Radio operations such as WTOP, WNEW, and WMAL quickly joined in. WTOP's website was apparently so overwhelmed with traffic they had to post "Due to the current events at the Washington Navy Yard we have replaced our home page with a live blog of the events to provide you with the latest news and to allow the site to function optimally." Over on WMAL, morning co-host Brian Wilson remained on the air well into the early afternoon, hosting coverage with late morning host Chris Plante, pre-empting Rush Limbaugh's show. Bill Hess, program director of WMAL, told dcrtv: "We also worked with our sister Cumulus station in Dallas - WBAP - to report more fully on the background of the alleged shooter, who apparently spent time in the Dallas-Fort Worth area." Meanwhile, over at CBS' Fresh FM, The Tommy Show's co-host Kelly Collis the news was especially difficult as for over an hour she was unable to contact her boyfriend who works in The Navy Yard. She tells Jockline Daily, 'My young children go to school in DC proper and there was consideration of city wide lockdown of the schools. Thankfully my boyfriend was safe but not being to get a hold of him was terrifying. He rang into the show this morning to say that yesterday he was en route to work and still waiting to hear from some of his colleagues on their status as not all the victim names had been released.

Unsolved Murder Of Radio Host To Be Subject Of 'America's Most Wanted'

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 17TH, 2013 –– Nearly a year and a half after the tragic murder of New Jersey radio host, April Kauffman, the case remains unsolved. April's daughter, Kimberly, told NBC 10 News, “I never expected to be at this point at this stage. I really thought that we would actually have some closure at this point and it’s really difficult.” Kauffman, 47, a popular local radio host and veterans advocate was found shot dead in the bedroom of her Linwood, N.J. home on May 10, 2012. Authorities said after the killing they didn’t believe it was random. But no suspect or person of interest has ever been named in the case and most recently prosecutors said they lacked sufficient evidence in the case. Kimberly recently got in contact with a friend’s friend at America’s Most Wanted and the national website agreed to run Kauffman’s unsolved murder. Peck hoped that the national exposure on AMW.com would bring a break in the case. “Maybe this can bring the tip that can help solve this horrific murder.”

Ted "The Golden Voice" Williams To Narrate Film On Plight Of The Homeless

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 17TH, 2013 –– Ted Williams, the former radio guy turned homeless who rose to fame following a YouTube video, has certainly experienced his share of ups and downs. But it was nice to see him featured yesterday on TV's Access Hollywood looking as if he's finally on the right track for good. He told hosts Billy Bush and Kit Hoover “Now, I’m really ready. I’ve been sober two years, three months and 17 days… I’m really trying hard. I’m doing really well. I’m surrounding myself with great people. I’m going to a lot of 12 step meetings, I’ve got a sponsor.” This path has apparently led to him now narrating a new movie about the plight of other homeless individuals. Even he is surprised by his success. “I thought all of this was going to just last for a week,” he said looking back on his success, which includes a book, a charity, numerous voiceover jobs and now narrating the documentary, “Houseless.” As most will recall, after appearing on the “Dr. Phil Show” in 2011, an incident with one of his daughters led to the police taking Ted into custody (although, not charged). As for his latest project, “Houseless,” Ted told Billy and Kit it shows “the real side of homelessness.” PHOTO/screen grab Access Hollywood
