NIELSEN: Ethnic Listeners Now Account For One Third Of Audience In The U.S.

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2017 –– As a medium, radio is well established as having the greatest reach across the U.S. It’s also clear that despite the increasing influence of digital mediums, traditional radio continues to attract young listeners who grew up fully connected with digital media. But there’s another side to the national radio growth story: The African-American and Hispanic listening audience now accounts for one-third of the listening audience, and that number continues to grow.

7 In aggregate, the Hispanic and black radio audience totals 74.7 million people 12 and older, up 6.25% from 70.3 million just five years ago. While tune-in has grown across both black and Hispanic audiences, growth among Hispanic listeners has been notably higher than among black listeners between 2013 and 2017. It’s also worth noting that radio reaches a significant portion of both black and Hispanic consumers, at 93% and 98%, respectively.

But ethnic consumers aren’t limiting their consumption to their homes and cars. In fact, black and Hispanic consumers are driving significant gains in audio streaming via smartphone, which is up 30% among black consumers over the past year and up 29% among Hispanics. But despite the growth of radio listening among these two groups, there are notable differences. Black listeners spend more time with radio overall, averaging 13 hours and 58 minutes each week, more than a full hour more than Hispanics (12 hours 50 minutes). These two groups also tune in at different times of the day. The top listening time for black listeners is between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the top daypart among Hispanics is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. SEE MORE HERE

7

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2017 – The WGRF Buffalo fundraiser was held September 14-15, 2017, and every song played during the Radio-Thon was a request with a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western New York. 97 Rock also auctioned off many sports and music experiences and collectible items, with all proceeds going to the non-profit organization that arranges experiences described as "wishes" to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Pictured at top, 97 Rock staffers and volunteers in action at the 23rd Annual Make-A-Wish Radio-Thon in 97 Rock's studios in Buffalo, NY.

--In yet another event, Cumulus Fresno's NewsTalk 580/105.9 KMJ recently teamed with local agriculture company Gar Tootelian Inc. and Farm Credit to raise funds for Fresno's Community Food Bank, and KMJ listeners responded in a big way. Last Friday's day-long broadcast at The Market Grocery Store in NW Fresno featured KMJ hosts John Broeske, Christina Musson, Ray Appleton (BR), Chris Daniel and Philip Teresi. All they had to do was ask, and KMJ's generous listeners opened their hearts and checkbooks, donating nearly $200,000 in cash! But the giving did not stop there: Gar Tootelian Inc. matched each cash donation with 50 cents for every dollar, resulting in $285,000 in total funds raised in this year's effort. REPORT: Florida Residents Turned To Their Phones For Radio During Irma

7

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 19TH, 2017 – When Hurricane Irma hit Florida, residents turned to their phones for local radio. NextRadio listener counts and session starts shot up 1,000+% in hard-hit Ft Myers-Naples-Marco Island. Listener counts in Miami and the Tampa area were up 850+% and 700+%. According to The White Paper, if you have the misfortune to be directly impacted, to lose power, television coverage, internet and cell service, to be cut off from the outside world during a disaster – it’s terrifying. Where do people turn for reassurance? To the radio. And to their phones, if they have the NextRadio app.

The Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) recommends listening to the radio for emergency alerts during disasters, including weather events. But the last thing any federal agency recommends is that people go outside and get in their cars during a hurricane. Storm safety and preparedness sources couldn’t be more explicit: Stay inside. Flying debris is the most common cause of injury during a hurricane. Put as many walls between you and the outside as you can. “Given our nation’s dependence on cell phones, the smartphone’s FM switch is a public safety issue,” states the South Florida Sun Sentinel Editorial Board. In a recent op-ed, the paper blasted Apple for refusing activate FM chips in the iPhone and called on Florida’s congressional delegation to take a lead in legislative action requiring mobile phones companies to activate the FM chip. More important, they'll also have a gigantic sports business, broadcasting games from 45 professional teams [and] numerous college teams" on stations like New York's WFAN and Washington, D.C.'s 106.7, Cramer said. The "new Entercom" will also become the United States' second-largest radio company by revenue with the best balance sheet in the industry, the "Mad Money" host said. WATCH HERE
