Woman Lands Job With Cumulus Station After Posting "Take My Resume" Sign On Public Square

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 6TH, 2013 –– You have to hand it to Wilkes-Barre's Laura Doherty, 27, who stood on a street corner, dressed in formal attire in Wilkes-Barre holding a sign listing her credentials with the headline "Take my resume." According to The Citizen's Voice, despite having a master's degree in counseling and applying for 250 positions, Ms. Doherty said she hasn't been able to find a professional job. After only a half-hour on her street-marketing shift, Ms. Doherty said she had already given away 15 resumes. Doherty said she got the idea to promote herself in the street from a co-worker at Olive Garden, where she waits tables while looking for a more permanent gig. This led to three interviews with Cumulus Media, but was passed over in a sales position. She then followed up with the company and received another offer to interview for another round of hiring. She then started her new job Tuesday. Gerald Getz, the vice president and market manager of Cumulus Media in Wilkes-Barre, said he eventually decided to hire Doherty - despite her lack of sales experience - because of her "drive" and "passion." According to the article, he first heard about his newest employee after another sales representative in his office saw Doherty from a car during her resume distributing in Public Square and relayed their conversation to the boss. Entercom Prevails In Wee Fro Wii Reimbursement Case By Former Employee

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2013 –– It's been nearly seven years since the tragic death of Jennifer Strange, a participant in KDND/Sacramento's 2007 "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" contest. In the latest legal twist, Matt Carter, then a part-time employee who handed out bottles of water during the promotion, sought to get his legal expenses reimbursed. According to The Central Valley Business Times, four days after Strange's death, he and others were fired, but Entercom promised to provide legal counsel. Carter chose instead to hire his own lawyer whose fees and other costs totaled $807,421.22. He then wanted Entercom to reimburse him for these fees. A California Appeal court now says Mr. Carter “did not have an absolute right to chose his own attorney to represent him at the expense of his employer” or the radio station’s insurance company. “Nor did the fact that he faced potential liability for punitive damages and potential criminal charges give him the right to insist that his employer or its insurer pay for the attorney he chose,” the appellate court said. Strange's death resulted in a jury awarding the woman’s husband and other plaintiffs a total of $16.57 million. READ COURT DOC. HERE

TRN'S Mark Masters Fights To Block Dial Global Acquisition

THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2013 –– Talk Radio Network's Chief Mark Masters warns that Dial Global must not be permitted to merge with Cumulus. In a released statement, he said "Over the past five years, Dial Global has become a monopoly and engaged in a long list of illegal and unethical behavior, including failing to pay us our share of advertising revenues generated by our programming. We have detailed that conduct in two cases pending against Dial (and others) in federal court in Manhattan and Oregon. Dial’s illegal conduct has continued recently, as it has refused even to pay to us mour advertising revenues, which Dial collected as our ad rep. We believe that discovery in our actions will show that Dial’s conduct was part of a deliberate strategy to acquire or destroy viable companies by interfering with revenue streams that Dial controls as a result of its monopoly power." Masters adds "Dial’s history shows that all members of the industry should be concerned about, and should act to prevent, Cumulus’s proposed acquisition of Dial. In our view, if the transaction goes forward, the combined company could dominate both the radio station platforms in the top 100 markets and the talk and news content for broadcast in those markets."
