The FCC Reaches $540,000 Settlement With Former Owner Of New Hampshire Station

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 8TH, 2016 –– The FCC has reached what it calls the largest settlement ever involving a single station, a $540,000 fine against Cumulus Media, the former owner of WOKQ/97.5 Dover, New Hampshire. “Radio and television stations that are paid to air any announcements or other content are required to clearly disclose the payer’s identity,” FCC Enforcement Bureau Chief Travis LeBlanc said. “While failure to disclose these identities generally misleads the public, it is particularly concerning when consumers are duped into supporting controversial environmental projects.”

The station had broadcast 178 announcements in support of the Northern Pass hydro-electric energy project without identifying the sponsor of those announcements. Investigators found the station had broadcast multiple versions of the announcements from May through October 2011 that referenced the Northern Pass project, but none of them expressly identify Northern Pass Transmission LL as the sponsor. Cumulus Media sold WOKQ in 2013 to Townsquare Media, based in Greenwich, CN.

The Death Of AM Radio In Europe; Should Chris Evans Just Stick to Radio?

BY GRAHAM MACK

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 7TH, 2016 –– The new version of the TV show, Top Gear is in crisis. The new host is Chris Evans from the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. Six months in, things aren’t going well. The first time Chris went around the Top Gear track he crashed a brand new Jaguar that had been lent to the show. Top Gear’s well-respected executive producer Lisa Clark left, and she was followed out the door by script editor Tom Ford. There are claims that BBC bosses are piling the pressure on Evans — who had insisted on taking an executive producer role — to deliver, while “meddling” in editorial decisions. Controller of BBC2 Television Kim Shillinglaw has reportedly become the “nightmare” chief meddler. Her relationship with Evans, who is known for being a control freak, has also come under the spotlight. There are concerns that Evans is over-worked. As well as Top Gear and hid daily Breakfast radio show, he host the weekly chat show, TFI Friday on Channel 4 Television. When Evans indicated he wanted to do another series of TFI, the BBC said he couldn’t.

In the UK, there have been recent closures of AM radio from a number of BBC local radio stations which have turned off transmitters. [LISTEN] Steve Harvey Breaks Silence To Listeners On Miss Universe Blunder; Has Yet To Speak With Miss Colombia

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 6TH, 2016 –– The 2015 Miss Universe host finally broke silence this week on his syndicated radio show, following last month's well-publicized naming of wrong winner of Miss Universe pageant. "Immediately after it happened, they asked the pageant people to come to the press conference," Harvey recalled. "I wasn't scheduled to be at a press conference, so I went and made all the apologies there … Here's the situation: Now, when the mistake was made, when I said the wrong woman's name, I can only give information I had. No one knows, and that information is not in the teleprompter because you've got two women standing there. I read what was on the teleprompter, then I read what was on the card .. t said first runner-up," Harvey explained of the gaffe. "Now, what happened, how it got like that, how it was done, how it was worked on, that's neither here nor there. I said the name that was on the card. When I walked off, everything was cool … and then all hell broke loose."

Harvey was quick to own up to his flub "Did I make a mistake? Yes I did, wholeheartedly," he said on Monday. "And at this point in the game, I'm not in the finger-pointing business and rolling people under the bus. So, I did what I was trained to do by my father … You make a mistake and you own up to it. And I tried to fix it, I tried to fix it right there." Harvey feels for Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, and attempted to make amends. "When I did it, it was horrible for Miss Colombia. And she's the only one I haven't had a chance to talk to," he said. "Now, have I tried? Yes. But haven't gotten a response." While the situation was incredibly sticky, Harvey's only regret was this: "How this must have made the woman from Colombia [feel] … I felt for her more than me." CLICK ON PANEL ABOVE TO LISTEN

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 5TH, 2016 –– At 3pm today, The Twin Cities is scheduled to welcome a new hip-hop station, Go 95.3. THE MOUTH, JANUARY 4TH, 2015 –– The stalker of Mary Lucia, a popular host on 89.3 the Current, received probation and a five-year restraining order last Wednesday.

According to The Star Tribune, Assistant Hennepin County Attorney Dan Allard had asked that Patrick Henry Kelly receive the maximum probationary term of five years, stay at least 10 blocks from Lucia’s Minneapolis home and her St. Paul workplace, and pay restitution of $9,222.99. Taylor Swift Steps Up Legal Action Against Former Host

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 23RD, 2015 –– Taylor Swift’s lawyers filed new documents on December 14th in her case against former Denver host David Mueller, aka Jackson, reports Radar Online. They're demanding $150,000 — $75,000 in compensatory damages and $75,000 in punitive damages — alleging the Colorado DJ caused her mental pain and suffering, resulting in inconvenience, emotional stress, fear, anxiety and humiliation.

Meanwhile, in Mueller's suit he is seeking a total of $300,000, plus interest, from Swift accusing her of costing him his radio gig for what he insists are false accusations. In his complaint, Mueller says he has been working in the radio business for over 20 years, including 98.5 KYGO Denver where he served as co-host on the Ryno & Jackson morning show. According to Mueller, his bosses informed him and his co-host, Ryan Kliesch, he would have to attend a meet and greet at Taylor Swift’s concert on June 2, 2013. Mueller said that he eventually went backstage to meet Swift. He explained that both he and his girlfriend complimented Swift and then took photos with her. He said the interaction went great and the singer “remained pleasant as she bid them goodbye.” Mueller claimed he later ran into a co-worker who bragged that during his meet and greet he put his arms around Swift and grabbed her butt during a photo op. Taylor's bodyguard approached Mueller later that night and accused him of grabbing Swift’s butt when they took their photo.

Swift fired back at the former radio host saying it was Mueller — not his co-worker — who inappropriately groped her when taking a photo. She stated that her security team correctly identified Mueller as the groper. Swift said the accusations by the radio DJ that his co-worker was the one who touched her are lies. She explained she is suing the former host to serve as an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts, and she insists any monetary judgment she wins will be awarded to charity. [LISTEN] Rep' Says 'Absolutely' Wants Steve Harvey Back For Next Miss Universe Pageant

Belize Has Invited Harvey To Host Its International Costa Maya Festival Next Summer

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 23RD, 2015 –– The world may still be abuzz over Miss Universe pageant host Steve Harvey announcing the wrong winner, but when all is said and done, he, along with Miss Philippines, may turn out as one of the night's big winner. Mark Shapiro, Chief Content Officer for WME IMG, who was in charge of Sunday’s pageant, joined CBS Sports Radio's The Jim Rome Show and explained exactly what happened with Harvey.

“It just was a flat-out mistake," he told Rome. "I mean, on the left side of the card, and it’s been tweeted around, obviously, it says Third Runner-Up: USA, Second Runner-Up: Miss Colombia, and then, on the right side of the card in big letters, it says 2015 Miss Universe and right underneath it, Philippines,” Shapiro said. He also added that the card could be made simpler in the future, featuring only the winner and first runner up." Shapiro said Harvey was extremely apologetic after the show, and he gave the host props for turning around after he had made the mistake and going back out to correct it live. “That’s live television, the guy made a mistake. He felt terrible, he was humiliated, he felt he humiliated her. He was very regretful, he was very remorseful in that dressing room. That wasn’t a good scene. I mean, he just felt miserable that he let so many people down.” Shapiro said.

When asked if he’d have the 58-year-old back again as host next season, Shapiro replied without hesitation, “Absolutely, absolutely. If anything, I’m sure FOX would support it ... I definitely want him back, and I would hate to see him not come back. He’s going to want a shot to redeem himself,” Shapiro said. “Look, the world forgives, the world forgets. It could happen to the best of us." Meanwhile, The New York Daily News reports Belize has invited Harvey to host its beauty pageant next summer. PHOTO/ s_bukley LISTEN TO INTERVIEW HERE

Jeremy Vine Gets Reported To BBC For 'Breach' of Equality And Diversity Code

By Graham Mack

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 23RD, 2015 –– A listener complained to the BBC after presenter Jeremy Vine said he had 'man flu' on air. Jeremy told his guest Dr Sarah Jarvis that he was suffering with the illness during a feature about Victorian ailments on his Radio 2 lunchtime programme live across the UK. One listener was apparently offended by the term and reported Mr Vine under the BBC's Equality and Diversity Code.

Radio NOVA In Ireland Plans Legal Action Against Tunnel Operator - Dublin-based Radio NOVA is preparing to take legal against Transport Infrastructure Ireland, the operator of the Dublin Port Tunnel over the fact its programmes cannot be heard in the Tunnel. Only seven radio stations are broadcast in the Port Tunnel due to limitations in its current system. Radio NOVA is not one of them.

Wave 105 Contest Caller Drops F-Bomb - A competition winner on the South Coast of England used the F-word live on air on Wave 105. It was during Rick Jackson’s Drive Time show when they won £20,000 ($29,626). Rick made the rookie mistake of calling a listener live on air who had entered a text-in competition, the Big £20,000 Bonus, to tell them they’d won. The winner was then heard to use the F-word. The hapless Rick immediately apologized and asked them not to swear again. The station owners, Bauer, alerted Ofcom (UK's FCC) that an example of offensive language had been used on its station, so an investigation was launched. They said that the competition had been running for six years and the nature of its format made it difficult to pre-record or pre-warn the winner (even though pre-recording phone calls is NOT difficult at all). Fortunately for Bauer and Rick, Ofcom do not understand the mechanics of broadcasting well enough to challenge this and now considered the matter, “Resolved”.

Copyright Royalty Board Hikes Rates; NAB Lauds Direction

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 17TH, 2015 –– A panel of federal judges has ordered Pandora and other Internet radio stations to pay higher royalties for sound recordings in a ruling that could have broad ramifications for the music industry reports The Wall Street Journal. The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) ruled on Wednesday (12/16) that online radio companies will have to pay 17 cents per 100 plays of songs through 2020, an increase from the current rate of 14 cents per 100 streams. The new rates take effect Jan. 1. NAB Executive Vice President of Communications Dennis Wharton responded by saying : "We are reviewing the CRB decision, but are pleased that streaming rates have begun to move in the right direction."

The move represents a partial victory for labels and artists who have long complained about trifling payments from music streaming services. “This is a balanced rate that we can work with and grow from,” Brian McAndrews, chief executive of Pandora, said in a statement.

The decision also affects royalty payments from iHeartRadio and SiriusXM, but does not apply to on-demand services such as Apple Music and Spotify, which have direct deals with the record companies that determine royalty payments. Wharton said "For the past five years most local radio stations have paid streaming rates nearly double those of “pureplay” streaming services. For example, most NAB member radio stations that stream music pay 25 cents for every 100 songs streamed, compared to the rate paid by Pandora, which is 14 cents for every 100 songs streamed. TIS THE SEASON: Channel 955 Detroit's Mojo Show Bring 60 Kids With Life-Threatening Illnesses To The North Pole

THE MOUTH, DECEMBER 17TH, 2015 –– This is the 2nd year CHANNEL 955 Detroit's Mojo in the Morning participated in the Flight to the North Pole with the Silverliners (retired Eastern Airlines flight attendants). They helped provide the toys for over 60 kids with various life-threatening illnesses from different area hospitals thanks to our Breaking and Entering sponsor Lady Jane's Haircuts for Men. The kids board a plane and "fly" to the North Pole where Santa is waiting for them. During the morning show they were live from the Delta terminal where the families were checking in and we were able to talk and hang out with the kids before their big flight.

Producer Rachel tells Jockline: "This year Mojo wanted to do something special so I created a Santa's Workshop where the kids and parents could shop for toys either for themselves or other siblings. Often the child who is sick requires a ton of attention and time which means siblings often feel left out, not to mention parents with piles of medical bills can't afford toys for their other kids. I am happy to say Santa's Workshop was a hit, the kids really enjoyed walking through and picking out toys for themselves and siblings. As a morning show we knew our involvement would amp up this event giving them an experience they can't get anywhere else and we hope it was a day the kids will remember forever!
