As a publisher, I constantly get ideas for articles. Heres an example. Recently, I was doing research on building your own studio. My first call was to Charlie Brown of Audion Labs. About this same time, a reader requested an article on maximizing use of the VoxPro. I wondered about its level of appeal, so to be safe, I put the question to several morning shows. To my amazement, many were ecstatic about the idea. Some went on to ask if we could turn this into a session at Boot Camp XIV. Being the bright one that I am I quickly shifted gears with Charlie, and he was more than happy to respond.
Here are some tips for using VoxPro to your full advantage:
It always amazes me how little many jocks use what's available to them
besides Record and delete. Power users however use cut, copy, paste, Voice Slip,
Insert Record, Make Master from Selection, import, export, etc.
One of VoxPro PCs features is VoiceSlip. Inevitably jocks talk
over callers. When that happens highlight the area in the edit window and in
the Effects menu select VoiceSlip. Silence is automatically inserted in the
caller and jock channels separating each and making it easy to delete one or
the other.
When you have a call recorded and dont have time to edit the whole
file to get what you want, highlight the audio you want to air and press the
Play Sel button. Only the highlighted selection will playback.
PDs who also do morning drive often tape out the last hours
sets inserting phone calls from earlier in the show to add a timely, live effect.
Having the producer play the sets back gives the PD an extra hour to do programming
duties.
The bleep feature is not only used to bleep out un-airable words, but
is effective between edited calls. It adds a sense that a lot of calls are coming
in and a lot is going on.
Recycle bits... before deleting a bit, if there's a good short caller
response ("All right!" "Yeah!" "Who won last night?"
'That was awesome" "What was that song?") save just that
short portion to use later. Select that area, Save Selection to New Master,
and then move it to a Phone Drops folder. Later, in the course of doing
a live rap I can drop in something that fits... and I will reuse them
every couple of weeks. Also works well for song requests, when you've got that
song scheduled after a break. The shorter the drop, the more I can recycle
it.
The Production Director is
always wanting bits for promos to play throughout the day. Export them in .WAV
format to any .WAV editor on the network. Likewise other .WAV editors files
can be edited on VoxPro PC.
