Edison: Podcast Listening On-the-Go U.S. vs. UK

THE MOUTH, JULY 11TH, 2024 - Ask Americans to conjure up images of the UK and two things quickly come to mind: double-decker buses and The Beatles crossing the street outside Abbey Road Studios. It turns out these iconic figures represent things that podcast listeners in the UK do a lot more than their cousins in the U.S. – listen on public transport and while walking around. Edison Podcast Metrics™ has been collecting detailed data about podcast listening in the U.S. since 2019, and now in the UK for over one full year, and is the source of this week’s insight on podcast listening locations.

One of the items we can examine is where people tell us they listen to podcasts most often. While “at home” is the answer for the majority of podcast listeners in both countries, some clear cultural differences emerge when we look at podcast listening in other settings. In the UK, respondents are far more likely than those in the U.S. to say they listen most while “walking around or on foot” – it is the choice of 14% of weekly podcast listeners in the UK, but only 6% in the U.S.

Similarly, Brits are three times more likely to say they listen most while on public transport (6%) than their American podcast-listening counterparts (2%). The percent of weekly podcast listeners who listen most in the car is higher in the U.S. due to America's car-dominated commute culture. Fifteen percent of respondents in the U.S. say the car is the location where they listen most, as compared to 10% across the pond.

AQ6, Radio's Exclusive Study Of Air Talent By Air Talent Is Now Underway From Jacobs Media

d

THE MOUTH, JULY 9TH, 2024 - In collaboration with Don Anthony’s Morning Show Boot Camp, Jacobs Media’s AQ6 is seeking feedback among on-air personalities, shows, teams, and producers across the U.S. While the radio broadcasting industry has been roiled by disruption, the role of radio air talent remains even more important to the success of radio’s companies and brands. In the famous words of the late Sam Kinison, this is your chance to 'Say It!!'

dThis sixth study is the only one of its kind, tracking the talent mindset, their perceptions of careers, and how their jobs and lives are changing in a fluid media environment. Last year, AQ5 began to explore their understanding and concerns about the impact of Artificial Intelligence on radio. In this new study, Jacobs Media will take a deep dive into how AI is being used at the station level, both in the studio and behind the scenes. AQ6 will again examine talent relationships with their home companies, the progress of women on the air, what motivates talent and disheartens them, and how many personalities are starting their own companies to prepare for an uncertain future.

The true value of AQ6 lies in the demographic and lifestyle breakdowns. Once again, this confidential survey will include crosstabulations by market size, company type, daypart, along with a trended look at how many “hats” they’re wearing and their perceptions about the state of broadcast radio and the companies that employ them. Jacobs Media's sixth edition of this study will again cover the basics of being on the air – the excitement, aspirations, and disappointments. It will also help broadcast leadership better understand how air talent thinks, both on-the-air and in their personal lives. It will also measure how personalities are adapting to new technology, and how they perceive their changing roles. As in past years, a summary of the findings will kick off Morning Show Boot Camp 36 in San Diego on August 8 by Jacobs Media President, Fred Jacobs.

Jacobs adds, “Radio continues to evolve, and so do the roles of air talent in big markets and smaller metros,” notes Fred Jacobs. “As always, AQ6 will include respondents who are morning drive stars for the biggest companies in radio, along with talent in small communities working for mom and pops. These are radio’s ambassadors, and understanding their changing mindset goes to the heart of radio broadcasting continuing its relevance in American media and entertainment.”

AQ6 is “live” now through Tuesday, July 23. On-air talent in commercial radio in the U.S. can take the survey by clicking the link below. In addition, those now out of work in radio are encouraged to take the survey if they were on the air at any point post-COVID.

We also encourage broadcasters to forward the survey link to other on-air talent in their buildings or around the country. Take the survey here

AQ6: Would You Be Willing To Sell/Rent/Lend Your Voice By AI For A Station Contest Or Promotion?

f

THE MOUTH, JULY 8TH, 2024 - As NBC gets ready to unveil its Summer Olympics package, a sidebar story came out last month about how the network is using AI to clone Al Michaels' voice to record an estimated 7 million personalized wrap-ups of events of interest. Interestingly, Al has not commented on this modern-day application of his "Intellectual Property" - his voice. That seemed like a great excuse to ask YOU in this year's AQ6 survey about your willingness to sell/rent/lend your voice to a client or for a station contest or promotion - for a fee, of course.

Don't laugh - this is very likely a situation some of you may likely have to deal with sooner or later. Other new questions of interest in our AQ6 study include your reaction to the end of the non-compete, how often personalities generate social media content, whether your station has marketed you/your show during the past year, and (my favorite) the dumbest thing you've ever done in an air studio.

This year's 6th survey launches tomorrow morning, June 9th. We can't wait to hear your opinion.

WNYC New York To Celebrate Centennial Beginning In Subways With Voices Of Personalities

STHE MOUTH, JULY 8TH, 2024 - WNYC launched onto the airwaves on July 8, 1924, with a bold mandate: to serve, in the words of our visionary founder Grover Whalen, as “the voice of New York.” Today, that first broadcast echoes as a credo, a challenge, and a resounding call to action. As WNYC’s Centennial approaches, they'll celebrate its first — and next — 100 years on July 8 at 7pm.

Brian Lehrer will host an on-air birthday party with WNYC Archivist Andy Lanset and special friends. At approximately 8:50pm, they'll segue into a reimagining of WNYC’s debut broadcast from 1924, starring Sarah Jones, Brooke Gladstone and John Schaefer with musical accompaniment by Arturo O’Farrill and J’Nai Bridges.

The celebration extends down to the subways as well. Starting July 8, subway announcements will feature the voices of WNYC radio personalities, Brian Lehrer, Michael Hill, and Brooke Gladstone. Additionally, All of It‘s “Public Song Project,” invited listeners to submit reimaginings of songs from the 1920s. A panel of esteemed judges selected the top entries for WNYC to play on air. The winners will also be featured on the Centennial album alongside, Rosanne Cash, The Lemon Twigs, Steve Earle, and They Might Be Giants, among others. Philadelphia Host Resigns After Revealing Biden Team Gave Her Questions To Ask In Interview

Philadelphia radio station WURD has cut ties with Andrew Lawful- Sanders who revealed President Joe Biden‘s team provided her pre-approved questions before a recent interview reports Deadline. WURD president and CEO Sara M. Lomax announced that the station “mutually agreed to part ways” with Andrea Lawful-Sanders in a statement on Sunday after Lomax admitted that the “questions were sent to me for approval.” Lomax noted that the interview “was arranged and negotiated independently” by Lawful-Sanders “without knowledge, consultation or collaboration with WURD management.”

Using the campaign’s pre-approved questions “violates our practice of remaining an independent media outlet accountable to our listeners,” said Lomax. “WURD Radio remains an independent voice that our audience can trust will hold elected officials accountable,” she said. “As Pennsylvania’s only independent Black-owned talk radio station, WURD Radio has cultivated that trust with our audience over our 20-year history. This is something we take very seriously. Agreeing to a pre-determined set of questions jeopardizes that trust and is not a practice that WURD Radio engages in or endorses as a matter of practice or official policy.”

Lomax added, “WURD Radio is not a mouthpiece for the Biden or any other Administration.” Lawful-Sanders previously asked Biden four questions on WURD’s The Source after his debate with former President Donald Trump last month. “The questions were sent to me for approval. I approved of them,” she told CNN. “I got several questions. Eight of them,” added Lawful-Sanders. “And the four that were chosen were the ones that I approved.”

Biden campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt told The New York Times in a statement that providing preferred topics is “not uncommon,” but noted they “do not condition interviews on acceptance of these questions.” “Hosts are always free to ask the questions they think will best inform their listeners,” added Hitt.

Podcasting: The New Talk Radio? Advantage For AM/FM Is Coming Entirely From '65 And Older'

f

THE MOUTH, JULY 8TH, 2024 - In 2017, The Atlantic ran a story entitled “Podcasting is the new Talk-Radio.” It argued that podcasting takes the “codes and crafts” of radio but adds “flexibility and chronicity—whenever and wherever you want, but you’ll hear from us again next week.” While the intervening years are proving this argument correct, we can use Edison Research’s Share of Ear® data to determine whether the ‘new Talk Radio’ has yet passed by the incumbent. All audio consumption is categorized by ‘content’ so we can strip away music listening and only look at the spoken word audio universe of news, sports talk and play-by-play, audiobooks, talk shows, and ‘personalities.’

At the time of The Atlantic’s publication in 2017, 66% of spoken word audio went to AM/FM radio, and 13% to podcasting. Fast forward to today, and the race is far closer. AM/FM now accounts for 43% of spoken word listening, and podcasts 36%. So, the margin has gone from 53 percentage points to 7 percentage points in the last seven years. Podcasting’s share of spoken word will almost surely surpass that of AM/FM within a few more years. There is one more thing to note – the advantage for AM/FM is coming entirely from those age 65 and older.

Among those ages 13-64, podcasting has already passed AM/FM listening by, 41% to 39%. Meanwhile, among the oldest Americans age 65+, AM/FM radio continues to dominate, with a 66%-13% advantage. Curiously, that 66%-13% difference among the oldest Americans is the exact same difference we recorded for all Americans 13+ in 2017.

EDISON: AM/FM/DAB+ Radio Is The Top Audio Source For Australians In The Car

f

THE MOUTH, JULY 8TH, 2024 - Australian radio has grown its audience and is the number one choice for in-car listening, according to The Infinite Dial 2024 Australia released by Edison Research and Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA). The eighth annual report was presented in a webinar by Edison Research President Larry Rosin, CRA Chief Commercial Officer Jo Dick, and other audio experts. These industry experts shared insights into Australians’ digital audio behaviour on the latest trends including podcast listening, audio streaming services, and smart speaker ownership. Some key findings from the report include: ·

• Australian radio reaches the vast majority of the population: AM/FM/DAB+ radio over the air or online now reach 81% of weekly audio listeners age 12+ in Australia, with significant engagement across all demographics.

• Australia has experienced a 20% increase in podcast listenership over two years: 48% of the Australian population 12+ have listened to a podcast in the last month.

• The number of Australian 25–54-year-old weekly radio online listeners has more than doubled in the past three years, demonstrating how audiences are embracing the way radio and audio fit into their digital lifestyle.

Radio is the top choice for in-car listening: 88% of Australians age 18+ who have ridden in a car in the last month currently use radio as an audio source in-car; in-car listening to streaming radio has increased by 75% in just two years.

Rosin said, “The Infinite Dial 2024 Australia study demonstrates the strong global position of the Australian audio industry, with robust engagement across different platforms, including traditional AM/FM/DAB+ radio, online radio, and podcasts.”

THE MOUTH, JULY 1ST, 2024 - Damon Amendolara has been a champion for Athletics’ followers who want their team to stay put. Athletics’ owners on the other hand are looking to move the team to LasVegas, which has sent their fans into a frenzy. During the interview, Thao opened up and for the first time and blasted Oakland A’s owners. "It's frustrating... and it's f***d up," she said. "I have warned the legislators in Vegas to watch out for John Fisher and Dave Kaval... and the majority have not listened. And that's what pisses me off. If you just wanted a ballpark (and not the property around it), that could've been done."

“I’ve been a supporter of the Athletics staying in Oakland from early on,” said Amendolara. “I’ve become the national voice for the team’s fans, who feel that no one else is listening to them. I was shocked at how emotional it was. There were fans with tears in their eyes saying, 'Thank you for telling our side of the story.'” Amendolara also hosts The D.A. Show with Babchik weekdays 6a-9a ET on SiriusXM and was looking to expand his presence to a visual platform for live events. Randy Travis Asks Radio To Pay Up In House Hearing On ‘100 Years Of Inequity For Recording Artists’

f

THE MOUTH, JUNE 28TH, 2024 - The American Music Fairness Act would "correct 100 year old issue regarding artists and non payment for their work," said Randy Travis' wife, Mary, at Wednesday's hearing before members of Congress. Billboard's Glenn Peoples writes: Country star Randy Travis had members gushing and brought star power to an otherwise businesslike hearing titled “Radio, Music, and Copyrights: 100 Years of Inequity for Recording Artists,” held Wednesday (June 26) by the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet.

“This is a great honor,” said Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chair of the subcommittee, adding that the other three witnesses “will have to live in his shadow.” Travis, who has had difficulty speaking since suffering a stroke in 2013, was represented at the hearing by his wife, Mary Travis. His circumstances made him a fitting witness and supporter of the American Music Fairness Act (AMFA), a bill that would create a performance right for sound recordings at terrestrial radio. Unable to sing, Travis has given up touring and relies on royalties for his long-term health care.

According to Billboard, under AMFA, stations that earn less than $1.5 million in annual revenue (and whose parent companies make less than $10 million in annual revenue) to pay $500 annually. Small, non-commercial stations with annual revenue less than $100,000 would pay as little as $10 per year.

Curtis LeGeyt, president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, warned the committee that any additional royalties would be too much. “AMFA would impose a new royalty on local radio that is financially untenable for broadcasters of all sizes,” he said. Eddie Harrell Jr, regional vp and general manager of Radio One, agreed. “Make no mistake that a new performance royalty imposed on local stations would create harm for local stations, listeners and the recording industry itself,” said Harrell. Chicago Public Media Names Melissa Bell As New CEO

THE MOUTH, JUNE 28TH, 2024 - The Chicago Public Media (CPM) Board of Directors has named Melissa Bell, former publisher of Vox Media and co-founder of Vox.com, as its next CEO. “Melissa brings an incredible depth of experience as a media executive and publisher, a product leader and as a reporter,” said CPM Board Chair Robert Pasin. “With her proven, visionary leadership and collaborative approach, Melissa will bring tremendous expertise and a strong track record of success to help Chicago Public Media develop a sustainable model for high-quality local journalism in the digital age.”

According to The Chicago Tribune, Bell co-founded Vox.com in 2014 and played a key role in developing Vox’s distinctive content style that emphasizes understanding complex topics, commonly known as explainer journalism. Under her leadership, Vox also produced an array of multiplatform news products, including the acclaimed Today, Explained podcast and Netflix’s Explained television series. In 2016, Bell became publisher of Vox’s parent company Vox Media, overseeing the company’s editorial publications, including Eater, The Verge and SB Nation.

“It is an honor to take on this role, where there is both a massive opportunity and an urgent necessity to strengthen the role of public media in our local communities. There is a declining trust, and more worrisome, a declining interest in news at a critical time in Chicago and for our country,” said Bell, who received her master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Sixty-two percent of weekly podcast listeners 13+ have enjoyed video podcasts passively, with the video content playing in the background while listening to the audio. Meanwhile, our data reveals a compelling point – 72% of weekly podcast listeners 13+ have enjoyed video podcasts actively, meaning they have watched video as they listen to the podcast.

Videos can add an extra layer of engagement, allowing users to connect with hosts on a more personal level and enhance the overall podcast experience. Podcasts with video elements also allow creators to repurpose content into short, engaging clips tailor-made for social media platforms – think YouTube shorts, TikTok, or reels on Instagram or Facebook. This strategy can work to enhance a show’s digital presence, while amplifying the reach and engagement of podcasts overall.

Premiere Networks And Bobby Bones Add''In The Vet’s Office' To Nashville Podcast Network

f

THE MOUTH, JUNE 27TH, 2024 - Premiere Networks and Bobby Bones, host of the The Bobby Bones Show, announced the addition of “In The Vet’s Office” with Dr. Josie Horchak to Bones’ Nashville Podcast Network, effective immediately. Each podcast episode, veterinarian Dr. Josie Horchak, sits down with her co-host Shannon Ella to answer questions she’s constantly hearing at the office -- What should I feed my dog? How do I potty train my puppy? Do I really need to brush my pet’s teeth? “In The Vet’s Office” debuted Wdnesday on the Nashville Podcast Network with weekly episodes available Wednesdays on iHeartRadio and everywhere podcasts are heard.

“Everywhere I go, from the grocery store to the hair salon, when people find out I’m a vet they have questions for me about their pets.” said Horchak. “This podcast is meant to share insight from one dog mom, who just so happens to have a degree, to another. I’m thrilled to join Bobby Bones’ Nashville Podcast Network to educate and entertain animal owners out there with the cases I’ve experienced over 15+ years as a vet.”

“Dr. Josie has been my dogs’ veterinarian for years,” said Bones. “Through getting to know her over the course of many visits to the clinic with Stanley and Eller, it was obvious she needed a show of her own to share the plethora of unique and entertaining stories from her time in practice, including treating the pets of many country stars here in Nashville.”

Bobby Bones’ Nashville Podcast Network is home to Bobby Bones’ popular “BobbyCast,” which has nearly 37 million downloads, as well as “4 Things With Amy Brown,” “Sore Losers,” “Get Real with Caroline Hobby,” and “Movie Mike’s Movie Podcast” with Mike Deestro. Kevin is joined on-air by co-hosts Virginia Sinicki and Jason Pennington (shown L-R). Named in honor of the late Kidd Kraddick, the annual award recognizes those of unparalleled success, inimitable style and authenticity. exemplary service to their community and serving as a constant source of inspiration to other shows and personalities.

Last year's recipient, Dave Ryan (R) of iHeart's KDWB-FM Minneapolis, said in selecting Rolston, "The responsibility of choosing the next Kidd Kraddick Award winner is the hardest part of winning this award. So many amazing radio people went through my head like characters on a slot machine! But I owed Kevin for helping me hide that body at Boot Camp 2014 so I knew he was the one."

Ryan adds, "Seriously, Kevin is amazing on two important fronts. Of course he's an incredible radio talent. His content is different and fun and innovative and absolutely compelling. He never plays it safe and it pays off. On top of dthat, he's a visionary. He sees where the industry is going and how to get his show on that same path. If you want to know where to point your show in 2024, follow Kevin."

On being named as this year's recipient Kevin says, "There isn't an honor I would cherish more. I believe Kidd Kraddick was the most gifted person to ever crack a microphone in our industry. Everyone to have received his award is an industry giant. I don't feel worthy, but I'm not gonna turn this down either! And to receive this award from Dave Ryan is such a cool full-circle moment for me."

"Dave Ryan is the sole reason I'm even in radio in the first place," Kevin added, "Hearing him on the Morning Zoo at WNCI in Columbus as a young impressionable kid at Ohio University who couldn't pick a career path, inspired me and gave me the idea that maybe I could do this too. I wanted to be him so bad. Kind of weird where life takes you."

STUDY: Telecommunications Among Most Impacted Industries By Technology in 2024

S

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 2ND, 2024 - “The Impact of Technology in 2024 and Beyond,” found AI as the technology most likely to have the greatest impact on a broad range of industries from film to medicine. The Impact of Technology in 2024 and Beyond: AN IEEE global study (IEEE) Extended reality, cloud computing, 5G and electric vehicles are also among the top five most important technologies in 2024, according to the IEEE. The survey of CTOS (Global Tech. Officers) from the US, UK, China, India and Brazil found AI to be the most impactful technology next year, encompassing predictive and generative AI, machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP).

Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Financial Industries Most impacted by Technology in 2024- The top five industry sectors that will be most impacted by technology in 2024, according to survey responses, are:

  • (41%) telecommunications (as compared to 40% in 2023)

  • (39%) manufacturing (as compared to 30% in 2023)

  • (39%) banking and financial services (as compared to 33% in 2023)

  • (31%) automotive and transportation (as compared to 39% in 2023)

  • (31%) energy (as compared to 33% in 2023)

According to the survey, among the top uses of AI in the coming year will be real-time cybersecurity, increasing supply chain efficiency, aiding and accelerating software development, automating customer service, and the speeding up screening of job applicants. However, integrating AI into existing work isn’t as straightforward as flipping a switch. In the study, nearly half of respondents said they see difficulty integrating AI into existing workflows as one of the top three concerns when it comes to using generative AI in 2024.

The benefit of AI is clear to many, but there’s a tricky part: potential risks. Among them is the risk of overreliance on generative AI for facts. As the IEEE puts it, the problem is that those facts aren’t always accurate. And with all forms of AI, it can be difficult to find out how, exactly, the software arrived at its conclusion. In the survey, 59% of respondents cited an “overreliance on AI and potential inaccuracies” as a top concern of AI use in their organizations. Part of the problem is that the training data itself can be inaccurate. “Verifying training data is difficult because the provenance is not available and volume of the training data is enormous,” said IEEE life fellow Paul Nikolic. In 2024 and beyond, expect intense efforts to ensure that AI results are more accurate, and the data used to train AI models is clean. Read Full Report Here
