CBS Atlanta Terminates Deal With 790 The Zone In Wake Of Hosts' Firing; Gleason Accepts Apologies
THE MOUTH, JUNE 19TH, 2013 –– In the wake of this week's firing of Steve "Steak" Shapiro, Chris Dimino and Nick Cellini at Atlanta 790/The Zone, CBS Atlanta has terminated its arrangement with with the station. According to The AJC's Rodney Ho, GM Trey Fabacher said the trio were the primary talent on the hour-long weekly Saturday evening "CBS Atlanta Sportsline" program at 7 p.m. Without them, he said, CBS Atlanta had grounds to end the arrangement. Plans are now reportedly underway to hire a new sports director in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, Steve Gleason released his own statement yesterday and accepted the apologies of the fired hosts, stating "... the DJs have provided genuine apology. Received and accepted. We have all made mistakes in this life. How we learn from our mistakes is the measure of who we are." During the segment, two of the on-air personalities took a call from a third host who pretended to be Gleason using a robotic voice and telling a series of jokes and eventually asked the two others to do him a favor by smothering him.
FIRED HOST: If I Were Listening In A Car, I Would Have Been Offended [VIDEO]
THE MOUTH, JUNE 19TH, 2013 –– Steak Shapiro (shown), one of three hosts fired from Atlanta's 790/The Zone following it's bit mocking a former NFL players who suffers from ALS, admits he too would have been offended If he had been listening from his car. In an interview with CNN's Brooke Baldwin, he said "You walk a fine line trying to be somewhat on the edge," Shapiro said. "We blew it. We blew it in a huge way." He explained that it all started as the show's crew tossed around ideas during a break. The Falcons and Saints are big rivals and it turned out that Steve Gleason, the ex-Saint who now battles ALS, had been the guest writer for Peter King's column in this weeks SI.com. They decided to spoof Gleason's illness, specifically, the fact he speaks with a synthetic voice and featured punchlines with knock-knock jokes "Smother me, do me a favor." Shapiro offered no defense for the segment. "The pressure is to try to do a good radio show, and that wasn't a good moment," Shapiro said. "It was a horrible moment." WATCH VIDEO
Fred Jacobs Weighs In Atlanta Mayhem: "Another Black Mark On The Industry"
THE MOUTH, JUNE 19TH, 2013 –– Make now mistake about it: when it comes to great talent and content, there's no bigger fan or supporter than consultant, researcher and visionary Fred Jacobs (shown), of the Detroit based, Jacobs Media. No sooner had the yesterday's news that “Mayhem In The Morning” was given the ax by Lincoln Financial’s 790 The Zone/Atlanta he penned in his latest blog "Stupid DJ Tricks." "The story really isn’t about whether they should have been suspended, fired, or disciplined," he writes "What makes this disaster “news” is that it keeps happening. Again and again." He adds "Now we’ve all been there – a morning show, DJ, or talk host goes off, does something embarrassing – and management is left to clean up the mess, apologize, or give out the old wink and a slap on the wrist. And because so many stations push talent to be more outrageous, crossing the line is always a possibility that many PDs and managers accept and face. But in the case of this latest incident, you have to wonder why radio programmers cannot get out in front of these problems before they go nuclear. In this case, you have a former NFL player (and his family) that have been terribly offended, the New Orleans community (where he played) up in arms, a station in turmoil, and a morning show suddenly out of work ... beyond that, another black mark on an industry that has become too famous for tasteless, moronic, offensive humor. That’s the part that you don’t see. READ ENTIRE BLOG HERE

The station’s SVP/GM, Rick Mack, quickly issued an apology saying “"We deeply regret the offensive programming that aired this morning on “Mayhem In The AM” on 790 The Zone, related to former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason and his battle with ALS." "Not much, like I've just thought about it and, I mean, like maybe when I like change a tampon." Syke'd then paused long enough to realize what she just said (and how many websites would likely zero in on this audio pearl) before breaking into some nervous laughter he says "OK. Alright. Ascap Williams Calls Pandora's Radio Purchase A 'Stunt' [AUDIO]
THE MOUTH, JUNE 17TH, 2013 –– Pandora surprised the industry last week with its purchase of KXMZ-FM, a small station in Rapid City, Iowa. Presumably, the move was intended to give the Internet radio broadcaster a better edge of royalty rate. This prompted a quick legal challenge from BMI and Ascap. According to NPR'S WEEKEND EDITION, Paul Williams, the president of ASCAP, says broadcasters pay the same in royalties for radio and streaming because those streams account for a tiny portion of their audience. "The fact is," he says, "they're very, very different models. Internet radio and terrestrial radio use music and generate revenue in different ways." He says Pandora's purchase of KXMZ isn't going to reduce its rates. "This is what I would refer to as a stunt, a way to do an end run to reduce the price of what they pay just one more little notch." Blake Morgan (shown), whose song "Better Angels" was among a number of his songs that got about 28,000 plays on Pandora. "The song earned $1.62 in royalties over a 90-day period on Pandora," he says, "which is a very typical rate." Pandora's attorney, Christopher Harrison says "Pandora shouldn't be discriminated against simply because we don't own a radio station," he says. So, (last) week they purchased KXMZ. Morgan says "I have a new record coming out — most people have new records coming out," he says. "These are things that we've worked on for months, if not years, and we're not looking to be paid unfairly. We're simply looking for a fair working wage for the music that we make."

THE MOUTH, JUNE 17TH, 2013 –– In case you weren't aware, Billy Joel and Elton John have had an ongoing feud the last couple of years following a 15 years of touring together. At last Thursday night's Songwriters Hall of Fame 2013 induction ceremony in New York, it appears the pair kissed and made up (so to speak) direct from stage. “I didn't see you tonight Mr. Joel, but I love you dearly," Elton said from the stage after he and Bernie Taupin accepted the Johnny Mercer Award. Shortly afterward, Joel took the stage to induct Foreigner’s Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. There he asked “Is Elton still here,” he asked. “I tried to get over to his table, but some girl came up and said ‘Remember when you threw me in the pool?’ If he’s still here, call me. It’s the same phone number. We’re fine. It’s probably just pianist envy.” In 2011, John told Rolling Stone Joel keeps canceling concerts due to illnesses and various other things, but added "He’s gone to rehab, but they’ve been rehab light. When I went to rehab, I had to clean the floors.” According to hitfix.com, In a piece in last month's New York Times Joel responded by saying, “That’s his opinion. I don’t do it because I don’t wanna. He tends to shoot off his mouth...Maybe he’s trying to motivate me, to get me mad or something. He’s kind of like a mom.”

On Ian Kennedy Throwing at Yasiel Puig's Head: Gibson said “We were ahead of him. It was a 1-2 count at the time… If you look at the at bat before, Ian came in at all the pitches and we seemed to kind of find a hole up and in on him…He uses a long bat and covers everything on the outside part of the plate. They were just trying to go in there and virtually duplicate the previous at bat’s pitch that they struck him out on…There's definitely no intent there at all. O’Brien: “Is Alan Trammell OK after flying over the rail?” Gibson: “Everybody's fine. It's good to be down on the ground occasionally for everybody.”O’Brien: “We're going to send Mark McGwire to one anger management class.” LISTEN TO FOX SPORTS AUDIO

British Member of Parliament says award is distasteful and should be handed back - Michael Christian, one of the Australian DJs involved in the royal phone prank that lead to the nurses Jacintha Saldanha’s suicide has won the “Next Top Jock” title in Australia. Keith Vaz, the British MP supporting Jacintha Saldanha's family, has labelled the award to Christian as "distasteful." He told Britain's Channel 5 Television News: “I'm appalled that they first of all entered for this award and secondly were given this award. It's in very poor taste and, frankly, it reflects very badly on the DJ for having accepted it but also on the company for giving it to him. “As a direct result of this prank somebody lost their lives, I think he ought to hand it back – he certainly shouldn't accept the prize which I understand is a visit to Los Angeles.”

Hey Look, Pandora Has Jocks - Kinda
THE MOUTH, JUNE 12TH, 2013 –– Didn't take long for Pandora to make news of its own this week, following Apple's new iRadio announcement. Yesterday, Pandora answered with an acquisition of an FM radio station in, of all places, Rapid City, South Dakota. But don't look for this to lead to more purchases. According to Bloomberg, Pandora purchased KXMZ-FM to gain the same access to music and rates as terrestrial competitors.. Station owners or their Web-based products such as Clear Channel’s iHeart Radio benefit from an agreement between their negotiator, the Radio Music License Committee, Ascap and BMI, according to Pandora, which has failed to obtain the same terms. Pandora is set to begin arbitration with the music industry at the end of the year to set rates that would start in 2016. The company filed a lawsuit in November 2012 seeking lower fees from Ascap. KXMZ is best known for morning host, Mike Swafford (shown), and its tagline: “Today’s best hits without the rap.” Although the station features a cast of live hosts, it shouldn't be construed as Pandora's ingress into jocks on their internet music stations.

Scott Thorson Rings Up Lamont And Tonelli; Gets Surprise Call From Ghost Of Michael Jackson [AUDIO]
THE MOUTH, JUNE 12TH, 2013 –– Longtime Liberace lover, Scott Thorson (left), has been in the news a lot lately. Aside from the recent biopic, 'Behind The Candelabra,' starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, he sent gossip rags into a frenzy with his recent claim of being a former lover of Michael Jackson. "Hee heeeee," the caller sang. Lamont quickly asked Thorson if he knew who that was, and at first he didn't, until the ghost of Jackson said "I think you're a big fat liar!" Hee heeee. MATT LAUER: When It Comes To Publicists' Don't Ask List, You Always Have To Ask The Question
THE MOUTH, JUNE 12TH, 2013 –– Nice read in Wise Brother Media's Studio Think Tank this morning on dealing with publicists' "Don't Ask List." Randy Lane consultant, Angela Perelli (shown) reached out to a few morning hosts for their approach to this common dilemma and the gist of it is, remaining interesting. Kevin Rolston of The Kevin, Virginia and Jason Show on WILD 955/West Palm said "I had the opportunity to sit and chill with Matt Lauer. I asked him the question -- about getting in the question that everybody wants to know the answer to, but the booking agent says you "can't ask.” Matt said, "You always ask the question. They don't have to answer, but you always ask." He said that they will not agree to an interview that comes with stipulations. TJ, of the syndicated Ace & TJ out of Charlotte adds, “If the person is not interesting enough without the big question, we'll just tell them, ‘No, thank you.’” But what about the option of agreeing to the stipulation, and then doing what you want? TJ says "As corny as it sounds, we don't go back on our word. If we tell you we'll do, or not do, something, we never intentionally do the opposite ... Weigh the importance of the guest and the long-term collaborative relationship with the booking people (label, agency, publicist, etc.). Kevin says, consider the payoff. The ultimate goal for us is to make something interesting happen - to get a sound bite or a quote that we can use as publicity for the show. Accomplish that and now you have gotten more out of the interview than the celebrity did! READ FULL ARTICLE HERE

The Schnitt's Go At It With Former Law Firm
THE MOUTH, JUNE 11TH, 2013 –– Just when you thought things had settled down after a long court battle between Tampa hosts Todd “MJ” Schnitt and rival Bubba The Love Sponge Clem, think again. According to The Tampa Bay Times, Schnitt and his wife, Michelle, who were sued by the law firm of Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick when they refused to pay an extra $1 million in legal fees, are now taking aim at their former law firm. After losing their suit against Clem they fired the firm, saying they were done handing over cash, especially after their lead attorney, C. Philip Campbell, was arrested on a DUI charge during the trial. Reportedly, the Schnitts had already paid Campbell's firm about $1 million, but then refused pay an extra million. The Schnitts then claimed legal malpractice and are now suing to have some of their original fees returned. The Schnitts want it to go before a jury, but Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick seek arbitration, where a panel of lawyers would decide the outcome. According to Campbell's firm, the couple reviewed an "arbitration clause," which said any disagreements with the law firm would go directly to arbitration. The Schnitts' attorney, Wil Florin, said the couple never received such a clause.

THE MOUTH, JUNE 11TH, 2013 –– Radio host Lex Staley (shown), of the syndicated Lex & Terry show, raised the ire of the transgender community last week after reporting on a story about a Florida teenager, 16, that allegedly shot a transgender woman who had (s)ex with him. I deeply apologize for an insensitive remark concerning a news story being discussed on my radio show ... Please know that my off the cuff remark was not intended to offend or hurt anyone, but after listening to the audio I understand why the comment caused hurt and anger ... what I said was just plain wrong and there is no context in which my statement is acceptable and I take responsibility for it..." He added: "..as a father of a young daughter I am always distressed when I hear of adults having inappropriate contact with minors. But instead of properly expressing my distress in this situation I made a stupid comment that had no place and failed to express what I was actually thinking... " PHOTO/Staley-Facebook

Last Minute Father's Day Antics From Nienaber
THE MOUTH, JUNE 11TH, 2013 –– Still bangin' your head for some cool show ideas for Father's Day? Perhaps Paige Nienaber, evil genius of CPR Promotions can offer a few ideas. Here's one from KDWB's Dave Ryan: Father Factor - Dave suggest getting five dads (plus kids) in the studio the Friday before Fathers Day. Ask them some kind of dad-related trivia question. The winner stays in the studio and the other four have to leave. The bit? They have to do something that it is traditional for parents to warn their kids never to do, to win. Like shove a pea way up their nose. They have 30 seconds to do it before they’re eliminated and the next dad comes in. Bad Dad Fashions - For Facebook, one of the stations plans to have listeners post photos of embarrassing dads fashions. Music Dad Hates - Done by Now in SFO where the imaging stated: “this weekend we are playing music your dad hates, giving away tickets to concerts that your dad really hates, from the station that your dad really, really hates." Give Your Dad The Finger - From CRS Morning Show Of The Year at ‘VOO in Tulsa, where last year they helped 98 dads get prostate exams. Have one you would like to share? MAIL IT HERE
Beck: What Would You Say If This Were Your Last Day?
THE MOUTH, JUNE 11TH, 2013 –– Radio/TV/Publisher Glenn Beck estimates that he's said roughly 89 million words on the air since he began in 1979. He also startled readers by announcing he recently learned he has temporarily lost the ability the ability to speak. Doctors informed Beck that his vocal chords have been temporarily paralyzed. The effects will “come and go,” but thankfully it is a repairable condition, he explained. Responding to the situation, he did something out of the ordinary on yesterday's TV show, by wondering how many things he has said in the past that actually contained real meaning; how many of those words were used to lift people up instead of tear them down. Using only note cards and music, Beck delivered a moving and often emotional monologue without speaking a single word. He reflected on the man he once was and the man he is now, which he says are two very different people. He asked: “If today was the last day you had a voice, what would you say?” WATCH VIDEO HERE

Is Today The Day For Apple's Radio Launch?
THE MOUTH, JUNE 4TH, 2013 –– Today's the day at the Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. With Apple now having reached deals with all three major music labels, it appears likely they'll unveil its free Internet radio service. Apple still has to work out deals with music publishers, Having already done so with Warner/Chappell, it all but assures the rest of the publishers will sign on soon. When Apple enters online radio, it will be difficult for companies like Spotify and Pandora to compete, said Laurence Isaac Balter, chief market strategist at Oracle Investment Research in a New York Times article. He said Apple will be at an advantage because it will have deeper control of the iPhone software and hardware, as well as more data about its own customers, than outside companies would, so that it can make smarter music recommendations for customers. Streaming music will also give customers a chance to listen to music they would otherwise never have heard before, and then perhaps buy the songs in iTunes, Mr. Balter said.
TV Host Calls Radio's Alex Jones An Idiot [VIDEO]
THE MOUTH, JUNE 10TH, 2013 –– Ever since the infamous Charlie Sheen, '2 And 1/2 Men' fiasco, the name Alex Jones, conspiracy theorist and syndicated radio host, began popping up more and more on national TV. You'll recall earlier this year when he got into a one-siding 15 minute shouting match with CNN's Piers Morgan while discussing gun control and The Sandy Hook school massacre. This past weekend, he went worldwide as he appeared across the pond on BBC's Sunday Politics with Alex Neil to discuss the recent meeting of Bilderberg group members. He told Neil that the creation of the euro was a "Nazi German plan", and that "Bilderberg is heavily involved in the EU plan" and "it is a Nazi plan", according to The Digital Spy. Guest David Aaronovitch, who has written on the subject, asked Jones If the group is so powerful why are you still alive?" Jones then claimed that he had received calls threatening to cut off his head off. Jones began to shout and Neil told him to "shut up" and that it was "not his own radio show". "I'm here to warn people. You keep telling me to shut up. This is isn't a game," shouted Jones, to which Neil said "You are the worst person I've ever interviewed." Then turning to the camera, Neil says "We have an idiot on the program." WATCH VIDEO

Host Passes Out During Blood Donation Promotion [VIDEO]
THE MOUTH, JUNE 10TH, 2013 –– There's hardly a host alive who can't relate to Wally, of BSR Australia's Wally and Kel Show, who gave an on-air blood donation for a good cause, but apparently lack of sleep and a bad chair didn't go too well with the event. As part of a drive to encourage the local community to give blood to its Australian Red Cross Blood Service, he and his partner did a synchronized blood transfusion, however, during a commercial break, Wally become unresponsive and one of the nurses told staff that he had passed out for a short period of time. A fellow host back at the station said "The line went a little quiet during a commercial break. Fortunately, Wally awoke with about 20 seconds to go before the commercial break. Once to, he blamed "the chair and getting up a 4 o'clock in the morning." WATCH VIDEO

Simon Cowell Egged By Former Show Contestant
THE MOUTH, JUNE 10TH, 2013 –– Leave it to a former Britain's Got Talent contestant who didn't make the cut to take aim at judge Simon Cowell--literally. Natalie Holt, a backup singer for the singing brothers Richard and Adam Johnson, rushed to center stage during their performance and began throwing eggs at Cowell. She was quickly overtaken by security. According to NME, she failed to make it past the bootcamp stage in 2012 so, apparently, decided to offer one last performance for the sometime caustic judge. She later released a statement saying: "I want to apologize to Richard and Adam for overshadowing their performance ... I basically took a stand against people miming on television and against Simon and his dreadful influence on the music industry." The show was eventually won by an Hungarian shadow dance troupe and was watched by a peak audience of 13.1 million. Richard and Adam came third despite Holt's interruption. Amazingly, both singers continued singing as Holt pelted Cowell with eggs. And she apparently was a pretty good aim. Cowell is seen at the close of the video removing clothing. WATCH VIDEO

51 Years Ago: Beatles Make First Recording 'Love Me Do'
THE MOUTH, JUNE 7TH, 2013 –– Most people reading this were perhaps but a sparkle in your parent's eye when The Beatles made their first recording, Love Me Do. Ken Townsend, who assisted George Martin at this session on June 6, 1962, said in an interview at abbeyroad.com “They looked just like four peas in a pod and I could not tell one from the other for some while, except for Ringo when he took over from Pete Best on the 4th September session. As for the first song, he said in hindsight it was a toss-up between Love Me Do and Ask Me Why. What fascinated him was that none of the lyrics seemed to include words of more than four letters. Of interest, this session almost cut short. "After running through the songs, it was obvious we were getting distortion from the bass guitar. Norman Smith tried the usual remedy of reducing the level in the studio and cranking it up on the mixer, but to no avail. George Martin said if we could not find a solution, then he might have to abandon the session.

JACOB'S STUDY: Mainstream Rockers Value Personalities Ahead Of Music On Broadcast Radio
THE MOUTH, JUNE 5TH, 2013 –– In Jacobs Media’s latest technology study of core radio listeners of Rock Radio formats, Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs, “Each of the rock oriented formats has its distinct digital footprint. Programmers and managers need to understand that while they all enjoy rock music of one type of another, that’s often where their media similarities end.” Here are some key takeaways by format: Alternative fans – distracted and engaged: They listen to less radio and place high values on music discovery. These listeners are the youngest of the four formats, very social and mobile, consuming media content whenever and wherever they go. While vulnerable to pure-plays like Pandora and Spotify, they are especially likely to download radio-centric mobile apps. If you connect with these listeners, they’re most apt to share the digital content they love, so there’s tremendous potential. And while they’re frequent Facebook users, they are also moving to Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. As for mainstream rockers – personality matters: Of all the music formats represented in Techsurvey9, these fans say that DJs now outweigh music in their consumption and enjoyment of broadcast radio. Triple A fans – the “hopelessly hip” audience: While they love music – music discovery is their primary driver – their overall listenership to broadcast radio is on the low side. Even Triple A fans who listen to Pandora are especially critical of that service’s lack of music discovery. Unabashed Apple fans, Triple A listeners are above average for both smartphone and tablet ownership. But they also profile as the least social compared to fans of the other three rock-centric formats. READ MORE HERE

WEATHERMAN: "Get In An Underground Shelter Or Die"
THE MOUTH, JUNE 3RD, 2013 –– Longtime KATT/Oklahoma City morning host, Rick Walker, tells Jockline Daily "Growing up in Oklahoma and living most of my life here, I can honestly say I don't remember ever hearing a weatherman say, "Get in an underground shelter or die." This was his take on Oklahoma's second deadly tornado in as many weeks. "The monstrous tornadoes you've seen on TV over an last 11 days are more vivid, bigger, louder and more chilling in person. The destruction is shocking when you see it first hand. Hosting a morning show in Oklahoma City for decades, my co-hosts and I have discovered just how truly resilient our people can be. Yes, we consider our people as family. It's not really an option. If you're involved in this community, you're family. This community has faced its share of tragedies over the past 20 years and during those times we've learned some valuable lessons about how to quickly shift gears on the air. It boils down to riding the wave and mirroring what our people are experiencing. The emotional highs and lows across our town eventually subside and shift into a numbness. Yet the survivors and rescue teams forge ahead. Sounds cliche, but it really is true that when our people hurt, we hurt. We know them. We're all threads in the same shredded Oklahoma fabric.
This wasn't Oklahoma's first or second experience with disaster, says Walker. "This community became closer after 1995 when the Murrah Federal Building exploded and since then we've become smarter, stronger and even more resilient. Our listeners know that we'll make our very best effort to keep each others' chins up, to share and give all that we can until last person in our ravaged community has rebuilt and healed...no matter how long it takes. After all, this is my town...my family. Rick Walker is co-host of "The Rick & Brad Morning Show" Rock 100.5 "The KATT Oklahoma City. PHOTOS/Rick Walker

Craig Carton Debuts 'Loud Mouth' And Hits CBS Trifecta [VIDEO]
THE MOUTH, JUNE 3RD, 2013 –– Perhaps CBS Radio Chief, Dan Mason, said it best in a Facebook post, writing: "This is why CBS is radio heaven. Craig does his morning show on WFAN owned by CBS..writes a book published by Simon and Schuster owned by CBS and then gets to promote his book on The CBS Television Network---life is good for a radio guy!" He's referring to Craig Carton, one half of WFAN/New York's Boomer (Esiason) & Carton Show. Now, in addition to radio host, he now adds 'Author' to his resume with the tomorrow's release of 'Loudmouth: Tales (and Fantasies) of Sports, (s)ex, and Salvation from Behind the Microphone [Kindle Edition]. As the description goes, In 1991 Carton drove a crappy 1980 Buick to Buffalo, New York, to interview for a job at WGR radio. The station manager who hired him was the first to recognize his considerable on-air talent, and helped start what has become a legendary radio career. In 2007 he joined WFAN. In his book, Carton defends his longtime love affair with the Jets and reminisces about the shenanigans of some of the highest paid and most celebrated athletes playing today. As a sidebar, while Jockline Daily loves seeing its radio peeps on the tube, we want to remind our friends in other media that the term Shock Jock (see above frame) has long been retired and applies today, at best, to maybe a handful of hosts. Okay, we feel better now. WATCH VIDEO

TuneIn Raises $25 Million To Keep Streaming
"The Likes Of Spotify and Pandora Are Giving Traditional Radio A Shot In The Arm" - TuneIn's John Donham
THE MOUTH, MAY 31ST, 2013 –– TuneIn chief executive John Donham has raised $25 million in new funding as its website and apps reports passing 1 billion listening hours for the first four months of 2013. According to The Guardian, its service has more than 40 million monthly, active users. "It's been very entertaining to go out to these top-tier investors and talk about what radio's going to look like over the next five or ten years," says chief executive John Donham. "They get just as excited about it as everyone else we talk to." But are streaming services like Spotify and Pandora killing traditional radio? "Of course not. Partly because radio is about more than just music, news, sports, comedy and other kinds of programs," says Donham. He adds, "There's still something very powerful and appealing about a real person talking to you and playing your music." Donham's pitch for TuneIn, which makes sense, is that the same technological trends that are driving the growth of the likes of Spotify and Pandora are also giving traditional radio a shot in the arm. "More and more smartphones are being sold every year, and TuneIn reaches those new customers every day as the number of devices in use goes up," he says. "Mobile and cars are our two fastest growing platforms. We now have 2m monthly active in-vehicle listeners, in the latter case."

Miranda Lambert Tears Up During Heartland Performance
THE MOUTH, MAY 30TH, 2013 –– To say that emotions were running high during last night's 'Healing In The Heartland' Benefit on NBC TV would be an understatement. Beyond Usher's surprise visit on stage during Blake Shelton's performance, his wife, Miranda Lambert's breaking down during her song sent shivers to those in the audience as well as its likely massive TV and radio audience. The concert which sold out in 30 seconds, offered a huge array of performances from several of county's top artists. Coupled with literally hundreds of other relief efforts nationally such as Cumulus Media, who broadcast all day yesterday on its 500+ stations for help, plus Dial Global's simulcast of last night's NBC Special on the radio, plentiful help should be its way to Oklahoma's tornado victims. Nicki Minaj And Hot 97's Rosenberg Make Nice [VIDEO]
THE MOUTH, MATY 29TH, 2013 –– In a well-documented radio spat that's lasted nearly a year, it looks like current Idol judge and rap diva, Nicki Minaj, and Hot 97 morning host, Peter Rosenberg, have finally buried the hatchet--sorta. The feud which came as a result of comments Rosenberg made about Minaj during last year's "Summer Jam," resulted in her pulling out of the event and no longer speaking with Rosenberg or the station. Yesterday, the calm finally returned as she joined Peter on air for an in-studio interview. From all accounts, it looked like her and the show MAY be back on track. On the show, she thanked him for setting the record straight, and then said, "It's water under the bridge…I mean it's so long ago. I can't even act like I care anymore, but I appreciate you guys having me." She said In hindsight...I should've just did the show," and she went on to add why she took such offense. "I never found you funny. I never found you entertaining. I never found you smart. I just found you annoying...To me you don't have enough of a resumé to make those comments." Yeah, that's progress, right. Hey, at least she showed up. Now we'll see if she performs during this year's Summer Jam. WATCH VIDEO HERE

Toledo Reunion Brings Longtime Friends And Colleagues Together
THE MOUTH, MAY 29TH, 2013 –– Without much fanfare and advanced publicity, onetime Toledo radio executive, Peter Cavanaugh, a member of Cleveland's Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, pulled together an informal gathering of former Toledo radio stars last night at an uptown restaurant. According to The Toledo Blade, the reunion turned into quite a celebration with many of those whom Cavanaugh got into the business. Mark Benson, a 30-year vet, who now host mornings on classic rock station WXKR-FM, 94.5, said it was Mr. Cavanaugh’s appearance at a radio conference for college students in 1985 that got him “fired up about doing radio.” Cavanaugh, who was once chief operating officer of Reams Broadcasting when it owned WIOT-FM, 104.7, and WCWA-AM, 1230, teamed Benson with a Flint radio talent, Jeff Lamb. They became Jeff and Mark, “The Dawnbusters,” in the early 1990s. Becky Shock, who now broadcasts afternoons on WRQN-FM, 93.5, started her radio career as an intern at WIOT. “I think how lucky I was to be 20 years old and to work in a place like that with someone like Peter, who encourages you and has you push your limits with things you’re not comfortable with,” she said. “He was always a big supporter. “They are all my kids,” he said later, when asked about this reunion of radio friends and colleagues. “And I love them very much.” Of course, radio's best bud, Art Vuolo, was there to capture the evening and provide the attached photol READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE PHOTO/Kirk Baird - Toledo Blade

THE MOUTH, MAY 24TH, 2013 –– You may have read awhile back about the mixed reviews Justin Bieber got when he was a guest host on Saturday Night Live. Retiring cast member, Bill Hader, joined Howard Stern this week and, more or less, put an asterisk next to that perception by saying that when the precocious uber star made an appearance he showed up with like 20 people and backstage. In comparison, he called Justin Timberlake a 'classy' guest. "He’s great a real class act. Also, the guy doesn’t show up with anybody. It’s just him,” Hader said. In contrast, Hader said Bieber came to the SNL studio with quite the large entourage. “He had a guy holding a slice of pizza. A guy holding a diet coke. Going around stage, you're trying to fight through all these people to get dressed," Hader said. Stern told Hader he thought for sure we would be seeing him on TV or Film real soon. We tend to agree. STUDY: Teen Interest In Facebook May Be Waning
THE MOUTH, MAY 23RD, 2013 –– A new study from Pew Research shows that teens interest on Facebook may be waning. According to the report, they specifically dislike the increasing number of adults on the site, get annoyed when their Facebook friends share inane details, and are drained by the “drama” that they described as happening frequently on the site. The stress of needing to manage their reputation on Facebook also contributes to the lack of enthusiasm. Nevertheless, the site is still where a large amount of socializing takes place, and teens feel they need to stay on Facebook in order to not miss out. That said, they're still very much engaged. They are sharing more information about themselves on social media sites than they did when last researched in 2006. Among the takeaways: 91% post a photo of themselves, up from 79% in 2006.––––71% post the city or town where they live, up from 61%. 60% of teen Facebook users set their Facebook profiles to private (friends only), and most report high levels of confidence in their ability to manage their settings. The study was based on a nationally representative phone survey run by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project of 802 parents and their 802 teens ages 12-17. It was conducted between July 26 and September 30, 2012. SEE COMPLETE STUDY HERE

Bad Luck Comes In Threes For BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw
THE MOUTH, MAY 23RD, 2013 –– It's been a tough few weeks for the Radio 1 Breakfast Show’s Nick Grimshaw. He was the victim of a celebrity slamming, a disappointing start to his latest TV show and then he discovered his car had been clamped. But Grimshaw looked determined not to let the latest batch of bad luck get him down, posing next to his clamped car and giving a thumbs up to a Daily Mail photographer. The common cost for the removal of a clamp is £70.00, ($106) and it is likely the star would also have been slapped with a parking fine for £80.00 ($121). At the Sony Awards last week, the singer Robbie Williams branded Grimmy a 'b******' for banning his music from Radio 1. Grimshaw's BBC 3 television show Sweat The Small Stuff has got off to a slow start despite high profile panelists and guests. The show attracted just 400,000 viewers - 20% lower on the stations average ratings for the time slot.

That was Dave And Chuck The Freak's announcement on Facebook last Friday following the final show of Drew & Mike on WRIF. Dave Hunter, Lisa Wray and Chuck Urquhart, who left 89X/Windsor last November, have also been tight-lipped, but with their latest FB post, those rumors should be put to rest later today. Meanwhile, filling in on WRIF before the launch of its new morning show, Meltdown will be holding court.

WHO's Simon Conway In It To Win It
THE MOUTH, MAY 20TH, 2013 –– Just in case you think only music jocks are the only ones willing to put themselves in funny costumes for fun and laughs, check out WHO/Des Moines Afternoon Drive host Simon. Conway at right. He took the phrase "you've got to be in it to win it" to a whole new level on Friday as he broadcast his show from INSIDE the Powerball! "The comments from our webcam and iHeart Radio audiences along with every line in the place lit up for the entire time I was inside more than justified what we did. It was hot, it was tricky (the headset had to be put on and removed from SImon's head by someone else!), but it was worth it," he said. Des Moines is the Headquarters for Powerball.

Drew & Mike Air Final Show From WRIF/Detroit
THE MOUTH, MAY 17TH, 2013 –– In a radio rarity, longtime Detroit morning duo, Drew & Mike, broadcast their final show this morning at its 22 yr. home, WRIF-FM where they got a chance to say one last goodbye. According to Detroit's Free Press, Some of it's members, like Senior Producer, Marc Fellhauer, started as listeners. “I was in Ann Arbor and I remember thinking, ‘I could work for those idiots. That’s soooo my sense of humor,’ ” says Fellhauer. “Seventeen years later I am still with them. On the long run. Drew Lane said “The show far exceeded anything I had envisioned. When we first started there wasn’t really a talking FM morning show and now there’s like five or six,” says Lane. “We first started having some great success at this time when (Howard) Stern came on. And (Ted) Nugent and Bill Bonds, both huge stars at the time, were also on. After we withstood that, people started to really pay attention.” As for it coming to an end, Mike Clark is still a bit baffled. “..Everything I heard about the why. ... I don’t know, man,” says host Mike Clark. “We had always thought that we’d be ending the show on our terms, when we wanted to. But this last week has been great — so many incredible listeners sharing their memories. I can’t believe they can remember everything in so much detail. It’s been a great run. But we definitely plan on making another one.” Radio historian Art Vuolo was there to film Drew & Mike's final show.
The Bert Show Debuts In D.C.; Brave Calls From Former Show's Fans
THE MOUTH, MAY 17TH, 2013 –– Everyone knows that replacing another show can often come with its share of angry emails and callers. But when that former show has been a market fixture for nearly 24 years, like Mix 107.3's Jack Diamond Show, it's safe to say you'll be in for a bumpier than normal ride. Yesterday, the syndicated Bert Show debuted live from its newest affiliate at Weiss' former home where he once co-hosted with Diamond. To the surprise of many, Weiss, unlike many hosts in this same position, took upset callers head-on by putting them on-air and letting them air their feelings. Weiss didn't back away from its show's make-up by admitting their show may not be as family friendly as Diamond's and would likely be more edgy. As for the initial response, Weiss tells Jockline Daily: The first few days has been exactly what I thought it would be. Our show is so different from Jack's that his p1's aren't gonna be our p1's. Nothing unexpected. It's the difference between Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon. I'm in no rush. It's gonna take a long time to bring listeners to our show 'cause the station is so well branded with Jack; as it should be. So, the ppm answer, not shocked at all by the pushback." He added later: "Jack was at MIX for 24 years. Those comments are a shining example of the legacy he built. If people WEREN'T outraged it would be shocking."
Howard Stern Purchases $52 Million, Palm Beach Mansion
THE MOUTH, MAY 17TH, 2013 –– Like our conferences, Jockline Daily often serves to inspire as much as inform. Perhaps this latest news will achieve that purpose. According to The Daily Mail, radio host and America's Got Talent' judge, Howard Stern, is apparently now set to split time between his apartment in New York with a new $52 million beachfront mansion in Florida (shown). The former home of textile tycoon Martin Trust has 12.5 bathrooms and five bedrooms, plus over 19,000 square foot on the beach. The exclusive community bears a residents' motto 'The best of everything,' and judging from the photo, there's little room for doubt. Among the notable past residents have included the Kennedy clan, Michael Jackson and John Lennon. And somewhere up the road, Rush Limbaugh. PHOTO/Bing
Colleen Addair Hits 25 Year Mark At WIVK-FM Knoxville [VIDEO]
Only Two Host Have Held Midday Slot Since 1980
THE MOUTH, MAY 17TH, 2013 –– Looks like Colleen Addair's move from a small station in West Virginia back in 1988 to WIVK-FM/Knoxville turned out to be great move. Yesterday she celebrated her twenty-fifth year with the country station in middays, a slot only shared by two hosts since 1980. "The biggest thing for me so far...everyday when I sign off the air I get to tell people that God loves them and encourage people. I've heard some very powerful stories about how that made a difference in their life. I don't want to leave that," Addair said during an interview with WBIR TV. Along the way, Addair has experienced a few firsts. She once went into labor while in the studio. In addition to her air shift, she also serves as the station's music director. WATCH VIDEO

Iconic Chicago Host, Clark Weber, Returns To The Air At 82
THE MOUTH, MAY 16TH, 2013 –– Chicago’s boomer-age fans of ‘60s rock ‘n roll radio will be transported to another time upon hearing the voice of Clark Weber back on the air. The 35-year veteran of WLS, WIND, WCFL and WJJD can now be heard every Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. on WIND AM 560. At 82, Weber’s voice hasn’t changed a bit. Weber comes from an era when disc jockeys were as famous as the people who made the music. Having left the airwaves in 1996, retirement has only partially caught up with “Mother Weber’s oldest son.”“People fear retirement as an end to their productive lives,” Weber says. “But those fears are unfounded. Our skills are still valuable and needed.” In addition to the topic of aging, Weber also speaks about his recent memoir chronicling rock and roll's golden age: “Clark Weber's Rock and Roll Radio: 1955 to 1975 The Fun Years.” The book is filled with photos and “behind the scenes” anecdotes and recollections about time spent with an array of stars to include the Beatles, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Barbra Streisand and Janis Joplin.
