Given Listeners Preference For Radio, Bing Is Making It Easier To Find and Stream Stations
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 21ST, 12016 –– Bing has partnered with TuneIn to improve the way people find information about radio stations, as well as locate where to stream them online reports searchenginejournal.com. Searching Bing for “online radio stations” will offer 'a carousel' of links to streams of some of the most searched for radio stations. Streaming a station will require the TuneIn app and you will need to have the TuneIn app installed on your phone. If you’re searching on a desktop, Bing will redirect you to TuneIn’s website after clicking on a radio station.
According to the Bing Team, this foray into the search for streamable radio stations is just the beginning. With the help of TuneIn, Bing says it has identified 10,000 streamable radio stations and will continue to add more over the coming months. When mentioning why it has now decided to enhance the search experience for radio, Bing points to a Nielsen report which indicates 93 percent of adults listen to the radio every week. “Given this preference for radio, the Bing team has partnered with TuneIn to improve our radio-related search results.”

Taylor Swift Wants 'Extremely Personal' Photo In Lawsuit Against Radio Host Placed Under Seal
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2016 –– Looks like you won’t be seeing any photos of Taylor Swift‘s alleged butt-groping incident anytime soon reports The Wrap. Swift who's currently locked in a legal battle with a former Denver host who allegedly groped her rear, has filed legal papers to keep evidence from the lawsuit out of the public’s hands, including one photo that is “extremely personal and sensitive in nature.” Swift is being sued by David Mueller, who says he was fired after being accused of “grabbing Ms. Swift’s bottom” at a meet-and-greet in June 2013. Mueller, who went by the name “Jackson" on the air at KYGO, has adamantly denied the accusation. Swift subsequently filed a countersuit against Mueller.
Swift and the other parties in the suit seek to keep her motion for summary judgment, as well as “confidential and private evidence” relating to it, out of the public eye. The joint motion in particular mentions a “photograph taken on June 2, 2013, and documents describing it.” “Exhibit 14 is extremely personal and sensitive in nature and should not be shared with the public until absolutely necessary (at trial),” the motion reads. The motion contends that, given the intense public interest in the case, dissemination of the evidence to the public would likely taint the potential juror pool in the case. However, the motion adds, the photo in question would likely be shared for “scandalous and prurient interests.” Swift’s countersuit, filed in October 2015, makes mention of a photo documenting the alleged incident. “Defendants admit that Mr. Bell showed Mr. Haskell a photograph of Mueller with his hand in an inappropriate place and a grin on his face,” the papers said, referring to Frank Bell, Director of Radio & Research at 13 Management, who is named as a co-defendant in the filing.
77 WABC Seeking New Revenue Via Livestreaming
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2016 –– WABC Radio in New York has begun testing streaming of some live broadcasts of three of its weekday shows reports The Wall Street Journal. In the process, they're hoping to unlock a new revenue stream. The WSJ points out it's not uncommon for top radio shows to be simulcast on TV, i.e. ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike” or WFAN’s Mike Francesa, whose show in the past aired on sports cable networks Yes Network and FS1. And radio stations have long streamed audio on the web, but radio has been relatively quiet when it comes to live video streaming online. One exception is WMMS in Cleveland, which has been streaming the show “Rover’s Morning Glory” (below) for roughly four years.
WABC’s tests involve three shows: “The Bernie and Sid Show,” which airs weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon, “Curtis and Kuby,” which airs each weekday from noon to 3:00 p.m., as well as “The Drive at Five,” which airs at 5 p.m. The live streams will feature most of these shows’ content, excluding the station’s live news breaks. “This is a good opportunity for us to rebrand the station a bit,” said Chris Rudzki, director of digital sales and operations at Cumulus Media, which owns WABC. “It lets us dip our toe in the waters and see what’s out there.” Rudzki added. “And the algorithm changes every time you do something.” Facebook is testing some “mid-roll” video ads during live video streams. WABC has tapped the technology company Livestream to deliver the live content to the web and help the station insert video ads. Some of the new video ads will be produced by the station, while others will be sold by video ad networks - PHOTO/WABC
LA Host Suing Former Employer Claiming She And Husband Were Fired Over Objection To Payola Scheme
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2016 –– Former radio host Stephanie Himondis, known on the air as Chiquibaby (L), is suing the Spanish Broadcasting System, claiming it fired her and her husband for objecting to its illegal payola scheme, which she claims demanded $5,000 from musicians to play one song one time reports courthousenews.com
According to the Oct. 17 complaint in Superior Court. The couple claim that SBS "demanded that Mr. Lopez engage in an illegal payola scheme" as part of his job. "SBS demanded five thousand dollars ($5,000) in payment from musicians in exchange for one play of one song on the air per station," the complaint states. "SBS flat-out refused to play music on its stations if musicians refused to pay SBS's illegal 'fee' for the same. SBS in turn gave Mr. Lopez a monthly sales quota of five (5) music spots, i.e., SBS required Mr. Lopez to illegally sell and collect from musicians at least five such 'fees' each month, per station, per month, which would yield at least $50,000 per month of $600,000 per year in illegal revenue to SBS."
The only defendants are SBS, a Delaware corporation, and SBS Inc. of California. Himonidis says she hired an attorney, who sent SBS a letter in October complaining about the payola scheme and underscoring her refusal to participate in it. That brought retaliation from the station, which appointed a large security guard to hound her at work, moved her show to the graveyard shift and fired her entire support staff, according to the complaint. She says the retaliation culminated in early January 2015, when SBS fired her, citing false ratings. READ ENTIRE REPORT HERE
[LISTEN] Cumulus' McVay Bullish On Next Wave Of Radio Talent; 'They're Out There'
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 20TH, 2016 –– As SVP/Content and programming for Cumulus Media and Westwood One, Mike McVay tells Billboard's Jim Asker, "I get to be the showbiz guy and [oversee] the content for about 500 stations." He recently sat down with Asker on the Chart Beat Podcast in Nashville to discuss a wide range of topics including the next wave of radio talent.
"If we give young people the opportunity, if we show them where the jobs are, if we don't voice-track everywhere, if we don't eliminate every opportunity for new talent to grow, we will see them come into our business. They're out there," says McVay.
When asked about listening to radio in an on-demand era, McVay says, "It's two-fold.""One, it's time consumption. You get to a point where, 'I'm busy. I just want to turn on the radio today.' The older you become, the more your life responsibilities grow [and] the less time you have to create [playlists with] your favorites. The second part of it is music discovery. [Radio] is like a CD player on shuffle. You [never] know what songs are going to come up." LISTEN HERE

Stern: Replaying Trump Interviews Would Be A 'Betrayal,' Not Intended To 'F**k Someone Over'
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 18TH, 2016 –– "I fully knew what I was doing when I interviewed Trump," said SiriusXM host Howard Stern on yesterday's show. "I knew I had a guy who loved to talk about (s)ex" said Stern but replaying his old interviews with Donald Trump on the radio would be a "betrayal" During his presidential run, media outlets have seized upon controversial interviews with Howard Stern between 2002 and 2013 reports Rolling Stone. But on the Monday's radio show, Stern said, "These conversations that I had with Donald Trump weren't done in private like the Billy Bush tapes – this was on the radio. Why don't I play all the tapes? I have to tell you why: I feel Donald Trump did the show in an effort to be entertaining and have fun with us, and I feel like it would be a betrayal to any of our guests if I sat there and played them now where people are attacking him."
Stern, a supporter of Hillary Clinton, said he was pleased the recordings have sparked a national conversation. However, he maintained that the chats were in the spirit of "having a good time" – and not intended to "f**k somebody over." He added. "I knew I had a guy who loved to talk about (s)ex ... I had a guy who loved to evaluate women on a scale of 1-10. These are avenues I went down because I knew it would entertain the audience." Stern also rebuked Trump's infamous statement that the leaked Billy Bush tapes were nothing more than "locker room talk."

REPORT: Top 40 Listeners Least Enthusiastic About Voting
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 18TH, 2016 –– A newly released white paper from NextRadio® explains how political parties and candidates can use radio to reach voters effectively in the weeks before the election. The paper’s publication coincides with various news outlets suggesting there will be a last-minute influx of advertising dollars to persuade voters in local or down-ticket races. The data comes from a survey that NextRadio conducted earlier this year, asking its listeners if they intend to vote on November 8.
Compared with the 2012 Presidential race, in which 38%* of eligible voters abstained from voting, the high number of people willing to sit out the race puts pressure on local races and many down-ballot candidates.
Looking across station formats, Top 40 listeners were the least enthusiastic about voting, with nearly 70% stating “No” or “Undecided” on their voting plans. Country and Spanish Music format listeners fall right behind with “No” and “Undecided” responses (66% and 63%, respectively). Additionally, 1 in 4 listeners of the following formats says he/she is “Undecided” about voting in November: • Rock (26%) • Country (25%) • Classic Rock (24%) • Hip Hop (24%) • Spanish Music (24%) • Top 40 (23%) For more information about TagStation®, visit TagStation.com. 'A Symbiotic Relationship; 'Top Comedians Name The Most Influential Radio Shows For Stand Up
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 14TH, 2016 –– Chad Zumock is the former radio host who recently sat down with Gregg “Opie” Hughes and his former long time partner, Anthony Cumia (this was the first time in two years O&A were on the air together during Opie's new afternoon show on SiriusXM). Zumock writes in theinterrobang.com that he began thinking about how radio has been so important to so many comedians through out history. He recalls that through radio he became acquainted with the likes of Jim Norton, Rich Voss, Bill Burr, the late, great Patrice O’Neal and how he heard about Louis C.K. from the Opie and Anthony Show. Zumock adds that in the early days of radio, comedians like vaudevillians Eddie Cantor and Ed Wynn did classic bits and over the years and decades since comedy and comedians in radio would continue to grow and evolve."
"Are there still radio shows out there that are changing the lives of comedians like some have in the past?" he ponders. This led to his reaching out to several of the top comedians and radio hosts to find out which shows still remain the most influential to stand up comics. Troy Hanson (Corporate Program Director of Rock formats for Cumulus Media) tells Zumock, "It’s really a symbiotic relationship isn’t it – morning radio shows & comics. Both bring a great piece of the puzzle that the other needs to the table. When I think about how great Nick DiPaolo sounds on Tom Barnard’s show at KQRS in Minneapolis, or how Jim Breuer absolutely kills it when he goes on Opie’s show, it’s the way a naturally funny conversation happens. Senior U.S. District Judge Frederick Scullin Jr. issued the ruling Sept. 19 after “an agreement of the parties” was reached to end the case. He wrote that it was “with prejudice” and would prevent the case from being brought again. The resolution leaves WIOF free to continue identifying itself as “Woodstock 104”.
Information provided by WDST showed the station trademarked the phrases “Radio Woodstock” in 1994 and “Woodstock Radio” in 2002. Representatives for both stations have sought to identify themselves as small, independent voices in a broadcast world that conglomerates otherwise control. WIOF, which began operations in September 2014, is at 104.1 FM and operates on 100 watts, while WDST has been on the air since 1980 at 100.1 FM and uses 3,000 watts. While both sides agreed to pay for their own attorney fees, Steele said a lawsuit seeking damages could still be filed to recover other costs.
Woodstock, NY was near the home of the legendary 'Woodstock Music & Art Fair,' which attracted over 400,000 people in 1969. It was held at Max Yasgur's 600-acre dairy farm in the Catskills - 43 miles southwest of Woodstock, New York - ref. wikipedia

GOLDSTEIN: YouTube Crushes Networks in Debate Coverage With 124 Million Views
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 12TH, 2016 –– Sunday night's debate attracted 63 million TV viewers. That was down 20% from the first debate. Football games and other factors including those simply fed up with the barroom brawling may have contributed to the drop in viewership. But there was another viewing destination which was up 40% over the first debate - YouTube. Debate content garnered 124 million views on YouTube. Facebook Live in partnership with ABC News had 7.4 million views. Twitter's livestream added another 3.2 million. What happened here? Many chose to watch bite-sized segments rather than the entire event. YouTube's livestream averaged 25 minutes. Now in fairness, the 124 million includes viewers from around the world, so it is not an apples-to-apples comparison but it is the digital age, it is a monster reminder that change happens.
And of course there was plenty of debate related content from both parties and beyond. Millions have watched Trump and Clinton singing "I've Had The Time of My Life." And there was Trump's pre-debate stunt streamed via Facebook Live. Facebook reported 20 million people liking and sharing debate content. Twitter had 30 million tweets sent during the 90 minute event. CBS led the TV networks with 16.5 million. CNN topped cable channels with 11.2 million Today, TV ratings tell only part of the story. Who won the debate? Digital media crushed it. Steven Goldstein is CEO of Amplifi Media, LLC, an advisor in strategy and content development for corporations and podcasters. Steve can be reached directly at (203) 221-1400 or firstname.lastname@example.org.

Former Radio Host Billy Bush Suspended From 'Today' Show; Past Radio Cohorts Weigh In
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 10TH, 2016 –– Billy Bush has been suspended from the "Today" show "pending further review of the matter," NBC News said Sunday night. CNN's Brian Stelter reports" It's unclear if he'll ever return to the broadcast. This comes amid calls for disciplinary action against Bush over his vulgar 2005 conversation with Donald Trump that was caught on tape and revealed on Friday. NBC sources initially said Bush was not being disciplined and that he would be in his usual spot as co-host of the "Today" show's 9 a.m. hour on Monday morning. One source told CNN Bush would use Monday's broadcast to reiterate the apology he made Friday. But on Sunday afternoon, senior NBC executives made the decision to bench Bush on Monday, effectively reprimanding him. A couple of hours later, the executive in charge of "Today," Noah Oppenheim, said in an internal memo that the executives had decided to go even further and suspend Bush.
"I know we've all been deeply troubled by the revelations of the past 48 hours," Oppenheim wrote. "Let me be clear -- there is simply no excuse for Billy's language and behavior on that tape," he wrote. "NBC has decided to suspend Billy, pending further review of this matter." At the time the video was recorded, Bush was a co-host of NBC's entertainment show "Access Hollywood.
Meanwhile, some of his former cohorts from then Z104/Washington have spoken out to The Washington Post. “He always let people shine in their own way, whether it was an intern or a musical guest,” said Janet Elliott, who spent five years co-hosting the morning show with Bush at D.C.’s Z104. “He was definitely on the entertainment side of things, always.” Sammy Simpson, who worked as Z104’s marketing director at the time, said one of Bush’s main duties was to participate in entertaining stunts, like at a Cinco De Mayo event, where he agreed to wear a Velcro suit covered in prizes so listeners could knock them off with pool noodles. “That’s his personality,” Simpson said. “He’s a silly entertainer.”

WARM 98.5's Bob Goen, Host Of '96 Miss Universe, Breaks Silence On Trump's Machado Comments
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 7TH, 2016 –– In 1996, Warm 98.5/Cincinnati morning co-host Bob Goen, who at the time co-hosted TV's Entertainment Tonight, hosted The Miss Universe Pageant. Goen and Trump's then-wife Marla Maples co-hosting the ceremony The winner than year was Miss Venezuela, a 19-year-old named Alicia Machado. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Goen this week to recall the event. "She was really enjoying the moment. She was enjoying her chance to shine in the spotlight," Goen says. "She seemed very upbeat, and she seemed comfortable with the position, and that was it."
Twenty years later, Machado has found herself in the spotlight once again after Hillary Clinton criticized Trump during the first presidential debate for his previous comments about Machado. After the debate, Trump also went on Twitter to discuss her past and an alleged (s)ex tape she had made — an accusation that has been proven to be untrue. THR says Goen didn't watch the debate (he goes to bed early for his morning radio show, Bob & Marianne in the Morning on Cumulus Cincinnati's Warm 98.5), but responding to Trump's comments Goen says "I think his position is inexcusable. I thought it was self-serving. I'm not a fan of the way this was handled."
In 1997, Trump called her an "eating machine" and discussed how her weight had become "unacceptable." "He flew in that day for the pageant," Goen recalls. "I do remember seeing him backstage beforehand and talking with him and talking with Marla, and it was quite genial." Goen recalls his time with Machado fondly. He says, "As much as the language barrier would allow, we got along great, and she was a very sweet gal."
Matthew Weakens Slightly But Continues To Pummel Florida Coast; Radio Host Admitted Fear
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 7TH, 2016 –– Hurricane Matthew weakened slightly Friday morning to a Category 3 storm reports CBS NY, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says it’s expected to remain a powerful hurricane. As of 5 a.m. this morning, Matthew was centered about 40 miles east-southeast of Cape Canaveral and is moving north-northwest near 13 mph with its strongest winds of 120 mph just off shore. Matthew's aftermath have left street signs dangling in Palm Bay BS billboards ripped from their frames in Juno Beach. The National Hurricane Center says sustained winds of 46 mph and a gust of 70 mph have also been reported in Melbourne. Massive power outages have left more than 270,000 in Florida in the dark and major airports closed down along with Walt Disney World and other amusement parks.
“I’ve been through earthquakes, I’ve been through tornadoes, but I’m not gonna lie — I’m scared,” Tony Zazza, a local radio DJ, posted to Facebook. In an update this morning, Zazza posted: "We are all curled up in haul. Winds are loud and creepy and the shaking and rattling is eerie. But it looks like the storm weakened to a Cat 3 and the eye stayed over the ocean. Daylight approaching and still 6-8 more hours of the pounding winds and rain!"
Matthew has already killed well more than 300 people in the Caribbean (Reuters reporting this morning that 336 have died in Haiti). Mandatory evacuations are also underway in Georgia and South Carolina where the hurricane is expected to hug the coasts of those states this weekend.

It's Complicated: Sean Hannity And Megyn Kelly Make Nice After Kerfuffle
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 7TH, 2016 –– As you may have heard, Premiere syndicated radio host/ Fox TV News' Sean Hannity and cohort Megyn Kelly had a slight kerfuffle this week; thus, setting the internet on fire. This followed Kelly saying on her show, “Donald Trump, with all due respect to my friend at 10:00, will go on Hannity and pretty much only Hannity and will not venture out to the unsafe spaces these days, which doesn’t exactly expand the tent.”
Hannity fired back on Twitter posting that Kelly should instead be mad at Clinton, adding that Kelly wouldn't criticize Clinton because she "clearly supported her." Predictably, this set off a twitter storm along with a bevy of news sites claiming the beginning of an internal war at Fox News. Some Twitter users suggested that Hannity should stand by his Fox News colleagues, which is when he replied simply: "Sure. When they stand by me."
Somehow calmer minds prevailed and the above photo was posted on Instagram with the caption: "We're Irish. It's complicated. #friends." That said, some of those who commented on the photo weren't totally buying this latest truce - SEE HERE

REPORT: 'Howard Stern Has Now Emerged At The Center Of The National Political Conversation'
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 6TH, 2016 –– In a lengthy piece in Politico, Virginia Heffernan writes that Howard Stern has now emerged at the center of the national political conversation. It was on Stern’s show where the then non-politician Trump commented on the Iraq War; It’s “hard to be a 10” if a woman is flat-chested and called the challenge of avoiding STDs his “personal Vietnam.” There was also Trump’s assertion in 1997 that he could have “gotten” Princess Diana. “Why do people think it’s egotistical of you to say you could’ve gotten with Lady Di?" asked Stern. You could’ve gotten her, right? You could’ve nailed her.” “I think I could have,” Trump responded, uncertainly.
Following some two dozen other interviews with Stern, according to counts by Buzzfeed and others, Heffernan adds that Trump admitted at times to being addicted to Stern’s show, telling Stern during one episode that he was late to at least one “really important” meeting, because he couldn’t tear himself away from the broadcast. Trump’s run on “The Howard Stern Show” came to a close right around 2004, when he met Mark Burnett, the creator of The Apprentice. Stern, for his part, hasn’t said whom, if anyone, he will vote for, writes Heffernan, but Stern's interviews with Trump will likely play on. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

Jon revealed his sacking in a tweet in which he joked: 'And I didn't even punch a producer,' a reference to the reason behind Jeremy Clarkson's sacking by the BBC from Top Gear

In his only Australian radio interview, Ramsey spoke to Meshel Laurie of Melbourne KIIS 101.1’s Matt & Meshel breakfast show saying “It’s kind of a mixed blessing — on the one hand it brings up emotions again, but on the other hand it keeps the case alive, which is important. The veteran media executive said he plans to leave WGN at the end of the month to focus on The Content Factory, his Evanston-based national syndication and new media company, and to expand into the area of sports representation.
“I’ve done everything I can to respect and build on the legacy of this amazing place, and I believe I accomplished everything I set out to do,” deCastro told Feder. “It’s been great fun to work with the incredibly talented people here. Now the time is right for me to go back and build something new.” Larry Wert, president of broadcast media for Tribune Broadcasting, praised his longtime friend: “Jimmy brought his unique leadership, experience and passion to the job every single day, and it made WGN a better, more focused radio station both on and off the air,” he said. “I am eternally grateful to him professionally and personally.” Wert said he has not decided whether to name a successor to deCastro at WGN.

[WATCH] Radio Host Who's Daughter Is Competing On 'The Voice' Says 'Nothing Prepares A DJ Dad Seeing His Daughter On A National Stage'
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– Cliff Casteel, PD/OM and co-host of The Cliff & Katey Morning Show (bottom right) on KTFX/Muscogee, OK. has been in radio for 28 years, which pretty much is all of this season's 'Voice' contestant Maye Thomas' life. Maye is the 27-yr. old daughter of Casteel who tells Jockline, "You should hear her do Stairway to Heaven. Just Wow! She began singing with school musicals in elementary school. It wasn't long before she began to teach herself guitar and would hideaway in her room. I noticed her guitar and vocals were getting progressively better. By high school she put together an all girl band and was rocking school talent shows." Thomas, who lives in Nashville, is very much a capable country artist as well as a rock artist, says her dad, "but her love is pop."
"I left Las Vegas in 1988 with her in a car seat sitting on top of clothes in my pickup truck,' jokes Casteel. "We had everything we owned in that truck as we left in search of my first radio job. I was told to get experience in a small market so, after a blowout south of Hoover Dam and successfully placing the small donut spare on the right front we made the 1,300 mile (on the donut) trip to Oklahoma where I found my first gig in radio."
Casteel says over the course of nearly three decades in radio "I have seen a lot of shows, played lots of music but nothing prepares a DJ Dad for seeing his daughter on a national stage like the Voice for the first time. It was as if I'd never heard a song, never seen a show and I was experiencing it for the first time. It left a motor mouth like me... speechless. I am excited to see how she does on The Voice this season. That's Casteel and family members shown above behind Voice host Carson Daly.

In 2016 It's Radio Stars That Are Making Headlines And Breaking More News Than TV Says Jacobs
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– In some of Consultant Fred Jacob's recent posts, he's examined lessons that can be learned from the presidential election about media, entertainment, radio, our culture, and ourselves. "These posts are not meant to take sides, instigate a firestorm in our “comments” section, or agitate our readers," explains Jacobs. He points out that in 2016, it is the stars of radio that are making more headlines and breaking more news than their counterparts on the TV side. Case in point, last week’s Presidential debate. "Conservative talker Sean Hannity and former terrestrial broadcast king Howard Stern were both mentioned during the evening. In each case, the issue was over the hotly contested issue of Donald Trump’s support – or lack thereof – of the Iraq War,' says Jacobs. And while hosts such as Hannity, Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Charlie Sykes (shown above) are most closely associated with conservative politics, Jacobs says "I don’t think there’s any question the radio personality that’s truly yielded the most power and impact this year is Howard Stern.
"Howard’s influence is infinitely more powerful because his guests are never too sure about precisely where he’s going, what he’s thinking, or the questions he’ll be asking," says Jacobs. "As mainstream media pundits now observe, Stern has developed into a top-notch interviewer. "The now-famous, much debated interview with Trump back in 2002 has it all. It starts out as discussion of the health of New York City post-9/11, and then this: Last week – 14 years later – Stern talked about that interview and what it was like being at the center of the debate controversy. THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 5TH, 2016 –– Popular conservative host Charlie Sykes announced on Tuesday that, after more than two decades on the air, he is stepping down at the end of this year from his show on WTMJ/Milwaukee to "pursue new opportunities." According to TMJ4, Sykes said "This is not a decision that I made either lightly or recently and it was not driven by this year’s political season. Earlier this year, Sykes made national headlines when he had an explosive interview with Trump. “Before you called into my show, did you know that I’m a #NeverTrump guy?” Sykes asked Trump a few days before the Wisconsin primary. “That I didn’t know,” Trump replied. Trump ended up losing the primary to Ted Cruz.
-- A bit further up the road, Jonathon Brandmeier announced on his website that he'll be ending his syndicated radio deal with Westwood One in early 2017. "They decided not to renew and I completely agree with that decision. I truly believe this is the best move for all involved. It was only a matter of time, and there are no hard feelings. When I was offered this shot at attempting to "change talk radio", I couldn't resist. However, I quickly realized talk radio is not ready to be "unhinged". Still, I don't regret the risk. I met some good people at Westwood One, we picked up new listeners from across this great nation of Murica, and I realized what has always driven me in this business was missing: the spirit of JUST HAVIN' FUN. It's time for me to get back to that. We plan to honor our agreement and continue on the air until it's officially over - or until they literally pull the plug.

Radio Hosts Stay In The Mix During 2016 Presidential Race; All The Way To SNL
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 3RD, 2016 –– Without fail, this year's presidential election has been, er, kind of strange. Something else a bit unusual was the mention of radio hosts Howard Stern and Sean Hannity during last month's first debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, brought up before the largest audience ever assembled to watch and hear a presidential debate. Once Dem. And it hasn't stopped there.
For months, Howard Stern's much heralded 2003 interview with Trump has been replayed and referenced numerous times showing the billionaire business man was then in favor of the Iraq war, a claim Trump firmly disputes. During the September 23rd debate when Trump was asked by moderator Lester Holt about his comments to Howard Stern, he quickly referenced syndicated talker Sean Hannity to verify how (Trump) was against the war. “Sean Hannity said very strongly, to me and other people, he’s willing to say, but nobody wants to call him, I was against the war. He said you used to have fights with me, because Sean was in favor of the war,” said Trump. Trump mentioned Hannity’s name at least four times.
In this past weekend's kick off of Saturday Night Live's 42nd season, Former 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin who portrayed Trump along with Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton, re-enacted the debate along with more Hannity mentions . When asked about his supporting the war, Baldwin (as Trump) said, 'Wrong. Wrong. Asks anyone in the world named Sean Hannity... Call Sean Hannity, Call Sean Hannity..."
Meanwhile, according to CNN, Howard Stern's finally on Trump's comments. “I was up late watching the debate. I hung in until about 10:30 almost, heard my name mentioned, and I went to sleep. It was kinda thrilling. Well, it always comes up because, you know, Trump was on our show years ago and said yeah, you know, he was kind of for the Iraq war, us going into Iraq," said Stern. "He was saying he really wasn’t for it, and so they were forced to mention my name. Yeah. It was cool. Good promotion.” And in case you missed SNL's Clinton/Trump parody, CLICK HERE

REPORT: Bethenny Frankel's Radio Show 'Axed After Throwing Tantrum And Cocktail At Guests'
THE MOUTH, OCTOBER 3RD, 2016 - Bethenny has reportedly gotten the axe by SiriusXM after the star threw a tantrum and a 'sticky' cocktail at other guests at Coldplay's VIP concert in the Hamptons, reports Page Six. “They were prepared to give Bethenny her own show, but they ripped up the contract after that night,” a source said. Frankel was one of the 150 important guests, which included Jay Z and Beyoncé, at Coldplay’s Aug. 7 gig. A witness told the paper she threw a sticky drink over three women who were blocking her view. “Bethenny started poking and pushing them. Then, when they didn’t move, she went to the bar and got a mixed drink and threw it over them.”
Frankel announced three days later, on Aug. 10, that her weekly show, which started in May on Andy Cohen’s channel, was taking a summer break and she’d be back in full force in September. Except she didn’t come back at all. Sirius insisted Frankel’s behavior had nothing to do with its severing ties with her. “When we announced ‘B Real with Bethenny’ . . . back in April, it was as a limited-run weekly series. We often work with hosts [on] limited-run series to develop . . . with the hope they can lead a daily show . . . That requires a great time commitment from the hosts. Bethenny is busy with Bravo and other projects, and we were unsure whether, in the long run, we could get enough of her time for a five-day-a-week show,” a spokesman said. A rep for Frankel did not comment.

Bonamassa's "Taxman" was recorded live at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, while Taylor recorded "Here, There and Everywhere" in a home-made studio in a hotel closet while on tour. REPORT: ESPN Mulls Moving Mike Greenberg From Mike & Mike Show To More Traditional Morning TV Show
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 29TH, 2016 –– In a move that would end one of ESPN's most prominent and longest running radio and TV shows, SI.com has learned that ESPN executives are exploring moving Mike Greenberg—one half of the Mike & Mike radio show—into a new role as host of a new morning television show. SI notes, these are exploratory talks with no decision is final yet, as ESPN management has been grappling with different scenarios to reengineer its morning SportsCenter show.
During the last 18 months the Mike & Mike brand has been in the news, mostly for potential changes to the show. In May 2015, during its annual upfronts for ad buyers, ESPN announced the show would move from its long-time Bristol, Connecticut, location to ABC’s Times Square studio in New York City. The move was designed to turn Mike & Mike into a Good Morning America-style program, including interacting with the ABC show. The move never happened. ESPN pulled the plug on the idea a couple of months later. As for the potential move, SI hears the radio show could become the Golic & Golic Show, featuring Mike's son, Michael Golic Jr. Such a move would put an end to end to Greenberg’s on-air partnership with Mike Golic, which began in October 1998.

NETWORKS: WABC Cutaway To Presidential Debate During Savage Show Stirs Internet
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2016 –– As the internet was abuzz yesterday with stories asking if the WWO syndicated Michael Savage Show had been '"sabotaged” over Hillary Clinton health comments, Bart Tessler (R), Westwood One's EVP, News and Talk, explained that "WABC decided to go local during afternoon drive yesterday to cover the presidential debate at Hofstra, a local as well as a national story." He tells Jockline, "As you know, affiliates are permitted to pre-empt on certain occasions when there’s a big local story. All other affiliates carried The Savage Nation yesterday as usual."
ntsmediaonline.com was first to clarify what actually happened after BrietbartNews.com reported that Savage was “abruptly pulled off the air on Monday afternoon after launching into a segment on Hillary Clinton’s delicate health.” The Breitbart story also reported that Savage’s live network feed was “suddenly cut off to many of his other affiliates and a replay of an earlier episode was substituted.” Breitbart reporter Aaron Klein said Savage characterized the alleged pulling of his broadcast as, “Pure sabotage.” Following a quick call to Tessler by NTS Media's Al Peterson, the real story was soon revealed. The Savage Nation broadcast yesterday as usual by his affiliates.

Futuri To Provide 'Rate The Debate' Voting Feature During Debates
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2016 –– Futuri Media has released a special live voting feature, exclusively for Futuri Mobile and TopicPulse Social Media clients to use tonight during the Presidential debate. The new feature will provide direct viewer and listener sentiment during the debate, providing audiences and analysts with real-time feedback. During all three Presidential debates as well as the Vice Presidential debate, Futuri stations will register live votes from local viewers/listeners on whether they agree or disagree with the politicians on the air. During the debates, viewers and listeners will go to the stations mobile app or website, select their party, identify whether they are registered voter or not, and vote "agree" or "disagree" in real time during the debate. Collective data will be displayed in a website voting window as well as a page in the Futuri Mobile app. At the end of each debate segment, participating Futuri client stations will receive summary data and suggested talking points regarding their local audience's voting metrics.
“Futuri specializes in digital audience engagement. Our goal is to provide Futuri stations with a unique second-screen experience for their audiences, capture real-time audience sentiment, and support our mobile and TopicPulse partners in producing the very best and most relevant coverage for their local audiences,” said Futuri CEO, Daniel Anstandig. With so many undecided voters in contested states, this year’s Presidential and Vice Presidential debates are critical opportunities for the campaigns as well as the media outlets covering them. This year’s debates are anticipating significant audiences, with some predicting that more than 100 million will tune in to view Monday night’s debate. This is especially notable, considering that debates during the last four election cycles have only attracted audiences to the tune of 40-65 million.

According to The Hollywood Patch, his 67 years with the Dodgers is the longest tenure of a broadcaster in any sport. City Councilman Gil Cedillo declared Friday Vin Scully Day, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti presented Scully with the key to the city. "I try to call a play, shut up, and listen to the crowd, and in that moment, I'm 8 years old,” he said recently.
The Dodgers had distributed a letter from Scully to each fan, in which he wrote about growing up with the fans of Los Angeles. “The transistor radio is what bound us together. “Were you at the Coliseum when we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to an umpire? Were you among the crowd that groaned at one of my puns? Did you kindly laugh at one of my little jokes? Did I put you to sleep with the transistor radio under your pillow? You were simply always there for me." Scully, who turns 89 in November, grinned as he talked about his retirement plans. “I’m going to try to live,” he said. And, amid all the love and tears, he closed with a laugh line. “I’m looking for a much smaller house and a much larger medicine cabinet,” he said. “Good night, everybody!" Of note, it was only fitting that the Dodgers celebrated their fourth straight National League West title after Charlie Culberson homered with two outs in the 10th inning to beat the Colorado Rockies 4-3 on Sunday. iHeartMedia 'Reinventing Live Radio' With Launch Of Two New Subscription Services
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2016 –– iHeartMedia announced today that it is reinventing live radio with the launch of its two new subscription services -- iHeartRadio Plus and iHeartRadio All Access -- set to debut in January 2017. While research shows that more than 90 percent of listeners say they listen to both FM radio and music collections, but at different times, for different reasons, this marks the first time ever that on demand functionality will be used to improve the radio experience, unlike current services which can only approach on demand through a music collection offering. Because 73 percent of consumers, which include users of on demand music services, continually cite radio as their primary source of music discovery, iHeartRadio’s new on demand offering will allow listeners to bridge the divide between music discovery and music collecting by seamlessly incorporating true interactivity into the radio listening experience through a variety of new features.
“We’re now making it easier than ever for iHeartRadio users to think of music discovery and collecting in a brand new and easy-to-use way,” said Darren Davis, President of iHeartRadio. “For the first time ever, when listeners hear a new or favorite song on the radio they can instantly replay a song and even save it directly to a playlist. We are reimagining radio -- with the new technologies and offerings powered by our on-demand options, music discovery, music collecting and the power of community and companionship fostered by live radio and influential and trusted personalities.
iHeartRadio is now combining it all for the first time; there’s no other digital music service that can do this.” “For decades radio has remained the No. 1 medium to reach consumers, fostering a sense of community and engaging listeners through entertaining on-air personalities and curated music and content,” said Bob Pittman, Chairman and CEO of iHeartMedia. “While other streaming services have taken a music collection approach to digital streaming, no one has yet built a service incorporating on demand technology with real live radio-- and at a scale that only iHeartMedia can, with its reach of over a quarter of a billion people every month --- It’s a monumental shift for the industry as we lead the way into a new era of interactive radio.”
'Contests Are Not Bad' Says Leigh Jacobs
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2016 –– Lots of buzz this week and during radio show in Nashville following NuVoodoo Media's latest blog showing nearly half of likely PPM participants think radio contests are rigged. Following this weeks post in Jockline (9/19) we heard from NuVoodoo's Leigh Jacobs (L) who assured us that reaction has been very positive from those who actually read the press release or blog post. A few, Jacobs says, who read only the headline or skimmed the post, thought we had concluded that contests are bad -- which is NOT the case." The findings came from our eighth Ratings Prospects Study, a study NuVoodoo fields twice a year to deepen its understanding of the consumers radio cares about most. Our questionnaires always include some questions devoted to contests, prizes and promotions. Some of the questions are just about interest/participation in contests in general, more are specific to radio station contests.
As for key takeaways from the study, Jacobs says, "The problem we believe is a need for greater transparency in contests. I suggested a number of ideas in addition to promoting winners on the air and online: · Showing prize drawings on Facebook Live – involving listeners when possible. · Setting up special groups on Social Media and offering email blasts for listeners who want extra chances at station prizes (in exchange for more of their personal information for the station’s database). · Making sure listeners who email or comment on station Social Media channels get thoughtful, timely responses. · Empowering staffers to answer listener phone calls; since the people who do call are disproportionately likely to be the people stations most want to influence.
I think the underlying problem is promotion practices that are long on solicitation and short on follow-through. We hear lots of promos about contests on the air, but rarely hear anything about people actually winning station contests. Part of the issue is entry method. Texting-in-to-win has become a more attractive contest entry method than the time-honored, “be-caller-10,” but texting robs the process of audio from an excited contest winner as proof that the contest is legitimate.
Group/national contests are troublesome as well, since stations don't want to spotlight winners from distant markets. While our guidance wouldn’t be to move away from shared contests, it IS necessary to start with a plan in mind of how to trumpet the news about local winners on-the-air and in external marketing. We think it's worth putting a few dollars behind ads in Social Media to showcase local contest winners. Station communications and websites need to show actual contest winners with Publishers-Clearinghouse style checks.

1.7 Billion Strong, Millennials Are Just Starting To Flex Their Spending Power Reports Nielsen
they’re just starting to flex their spending power,
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2016 –– According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s International Database, Millennials make up one-fourth of the planet’s population, which translates into 1.7 billion people. As a consumer group, they’re just starting to flex their spending power, which will grow significantly in the coming years. While they’re years from fully establishing themselves, they’re already having a marked impact on the global consumer landscape.
Having grown up amid growing media fragmentation, Millennials are hyper adept at multitasking and are fully immersed in both their digital and physical lives. Notably, findings from more than a dozen Nielsen Global Survey reports from 2013-2016, which polled the attitudes of more than 30,000 online consumers in more than 60 countries, revealed that Millennials are a social, community-driven generation that values the voice of the individual. Millennials are also a demanding generation that wants a more balanced, healthy lifestyle, and they want to be more informed about companies, their products and their business practices. They also expect products to do more for them and for their community. They excel in a fast-paced world that requires an on-the-go lifestyle. They value, even demand, connectivity, convenience and options that allow them to be in control. These core values and characteristics will remain the key influencers and drivers for how Millennials think, spend and act throughout their lifetimes. SEE STUDY HERE
Scott Shannon's Brings Back True Oldies Channel
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2016 –– United Stations Radio Networks announced that it is expanding its association with the legendary programmer, Scott Shannon, by offering his 24-hour-a-day True Oldies Channel to radio stations across America. Since November of 2014, USRN has been the distributor of Scott’s weekend program known as America’s Greatest Hits, which is a co-production with CBS Radio. Now, as an independent producer, Scott is in business with United Stations to re-launch his popular full-time oldies network for the first time since 2014.
The True Oldies Channel is currently on the air again in several test markets using a new cloud-based distribution technology developed by Synchronicity, Inc. Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel began as the brainchild of Scott Shannon in 2004. Shannon noticed that as Classic Hits radio stations were evolving their demographic target and moving their music focus toward more recent decades, there was an opening for programming that featured an entire library of hit music that was starting to be overlooked. Shannon is not only the namesake of the channel but is its program director and on-air host. The True Oldies Channel was originally launched by the ABC Radio Network which then evolved into Citadel Media, and during its original run the channel was heard on approximately 100 radio stations. Fred Jacobs Asks: Are Billboards The New Black?
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2016 –– Jacobs Media's head Fred Jacobs blogs, 'In a time where digital advertising and video are the rage, an old standard is making a marketing comeback: the lowly billboard. Except the modern version – electronic boards – are providing flexibility at every turn of a campaign. The New York Times reports that while billboards have a decidedly retro feel, advertisers continue to reap benefits from outdoor advertising.
jacobs adds, as radio becomes just another choice rather than the front and center attraction in the dash, the challenge become one of awareness, especially for those kids who are part of Generation Z. Many of them simply don’t know what radio is. And if they’re not listening to radio outside the car, they’ll have no motivation to seek out radio when they’re in one. Radio is going to have to market itself, and the billboard becomes an obvious advertising choice. The last decade has proved that while tech brands like Apple, Google, Samsung, and others continue to break new ground, we keep seeing their devices and innovations on the sides of buildings and highly visible on billboards in major markets all over the U.S. It’s an old school and effective approach that creates awareness. Why would NextRadio be any different? The billboard could end up being the way radio delivers that message to consumers – of all ages. " READ COMPLETE BLOG HERE

SABO: How Radio Can Avoid 'Newspaper Killers'
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2016 - Following a recent Pew Research Study showing newspapers seeing its greatest decline since 2010, Consultant Walter Sabo tells Jockline these same 'killers' can be avoided by radio. "Classified Ads once provided the highest percent of profits for newspapers," said Sabo. "They cost nothing to sell, cost nothing to create and customers paid up front. In 2003 the Classified section of the Los Angeles Times out grossed ALL Los Angeles Radio stations combined. Newspapers, however, did not, could not, anticipate the impact of Craigslist. Craigslist killed classified advertising.
As for radio, Sabo says its over dependence on morning drive revenue is similar to newspaper's dependence on Classifieds. "Newspapers had limited local "talent". Most local papers had one star columnist and one sports columnist. The rest of the content was available on many other platforms. Their entire content offering was not unique---except for one or two columnists, maybe.
The lesson is obvious and simple: The more unique talent offered by a station---all day and night---the less vulnerable the business. Almost every single newspaper Editor thought they were committing Journalism. They didn't want to admit that there are key entertainment elements to a newspaper. FOR EXAMPLE the first read section of a newspaper is THE COMICS. Editors hate that fact but it's a fact. A hardcore newspaper person takes the paper and reads the front page---then the Editorial page. An normal reader stars with the comics and then hits the gossip page. If newspapers had celebrated the popular elements such as comics and astrology rather than bury them they would have found more and more popular elements that would build out the paper's appeal. The culture of a legacy editorial staff was to view popular elements as "unclean" and "not serious."
Every radio programmer holds certain principles to be sacred and very serious. Perhaps it's worth reviewing those principles with skepticism. Many newspapers STILL do not embrace the Internet as a distribution channel for their content. At some papers, the website is treated just like the paper product---it is only refreshed once a day. Smart papers update their online presence constantly---and they staff for it. Radio stations that will thrive are the ones the identify every single channel for distribution and monetize them. AdLarge Introduces New Platform To Supercharge Call-In Lines And Enhance Listener Interaction
THE MOUTH, SEPTEMBER 21ST, 2016 –– AdLarge Media has introduced Shout To Me, an audience engagement platform that supercharges traditional call-in lines and revolutionizes the way radio stations interact with their listeners. Shout To Me leverages sophisticated tools to intelligently process listener-recorded audio clips -- called shouts -- and make them available for radio stations to use on-air and online. Listeners can record shouts using the station’s existing call-in line or smartphone application. Once recorded, the Shout To Me platform instantly converts the audio to text, saving producers and screeners from needing to listen to each one. It also categorizes and tags the shouts, so station staff can quickly find the best ones to use on-air.
“The more stations engage with their audience, the more they can increase the time that listeners spend and interact with the station, and that attracts sponsors and increases revenue,” said Jessica Sherman Senior Director, Affiliate Marketing for AdLarge Media. “Shout to Me connects radio stations directly to their audiences wherever they may be.” For more information, contact Jessica Sherman at 646-759-8431 or email@example.com.
