STUDY: Radio Use Changes As Millennials Move Through Life
THE MOUTH MAY 26TH, 2016 –– While millennials fall into one generation group, they have different beliefs, interests and behaviors as they move through life reports Nielsen Q4 2015 Total Audience Report. As this group moves through life stages, media remains an important part of their lives, especially radio. On average, radio reaches nine out of 10 Millennials across all three life stages each week. Their lives are in rapid transition, they are joining the workforce, moving into their own homes and starting families. And these changes influence their media consumption habits, including how and when they listen to the radio.
To better understand the media habits of the different sub-groups within the overall Millennial generation, Nielsen’s fourth-quarter 2015 Total Audience Report separated the 18-34 crowd into three different groups: Dependent Adults (those living in someone else’s home), On Their Own Millennials (those living in their own home without children), and Starting a Family Millennials (those living in their own home with children).
As for formats, On Their Own Millennials are the least ethnically diverse group and show a preference for non-ethnic formats like Hot Adult Contemporary and Alternative. They also listen to sports stations more than the other two Millennial groups.
Radio Effectively Reaches Millennials With 265 million Americans 6 and older listening to the radio each week, the medium reaches more people each week than any other platform. Despite the proliferation, many advertisers perceive Millennials as unreachable by radio because of the abundance of media options available to them. The reality, however, is that Millennials account for 66.5 million radio users each week. And no matter which life stage Millennials are in, nine out of 10 listen to radio weekly. iHeartMedia Shares Surge Following Judge's Verdict
THE MOUTH, MAY 25TH, 2016 –– IHeart shares rose 43 percent at 4 p.m. in New York. They had surged as much as 61 percent following the ruling reported bloomberg.com. “We believe this clears an important hurdle and expect the company to aggressively address its capital structure in 2016,” David Phipps, a Citigroup Global Markets Inc. research analyst, said in a note to investors. “We think some form of bond tender offer and/or debt exchange announcement could occur near-term.”
iHeartMedia, led by Chairman/CEO Bob Pittman, issued a statement writing "Today, the State District Court in Bexar County, Texas ruled in our favor when it determined that our contribution of Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, Inc. stock to our subsidiary Broader Media, LLC was a permitted investment under our financing agreements. The strong performance of our operating business provides us with the flexibility to manage our capital structure in a prudent manner. In full compliance with our financing agreements, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to strengthen our balance sheet. We look forward to constructive discussions with our lenders as we continue to position iHeartMedia for long-term growth."
iHeart Prevails In Lawsuit Against Bondholders
THE MOUTH, MAY 25TH, 2016 –– Saying the company has been harmed by the threats of default notices that started early this year, San Antonio-based iHeartMedia Inc. won its lawsuit Tuesday against bondholders unhappy over the company's recent transfer of assets within the company.
The verdict from state District Judge Cathleen Stryker permanently blocks bondholders from filing default notices against the company in connection with the transfer. According to The San Antonio Express, the legal dispute involved a Dec. 3, 2015 transfer of 100 million shares of iHeartMedia’s billboard subsidiary Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc. to another subsidiary for the purpose of issuing new debt to buy back expiring debt. The bondholders had threatened default notices against iHeartMedia earlier in the year, and several notices were filed March 7, but those were rescinded March 9 under a temporary restraining order pending the trial. IHeartMedia contended that the rules for its earlier bond sales allowed the company to make the Dec. 3 transfer. IHeartMedia seeks to buy back existing debt, which is trading on the secondary market at a discount, to save money on future interest payments. PHOTO/Brian Friedman for iHeartRadio
PIERRE BOUVARD: 'Reach Is Still The New Black'
THE MOUTH, MAY 25TH, 2016 –– Pierre Bouvard, Chief Insights Officer of Cumulus/Westwood One, in a new post on his Westwood One blog writes what radio can learn from this year’s TV upfront: "Reach is still the new black." The bigger the reach, the greater your target. As America’s number one mass reach medium, AM/FM radio can reach more of the advertiser’s right audience. Secondly, while TV wants to reduce ad loads, radio commercial time is significantly lower.
TV runs 36% more commercial minutes than radio. AM/FM radio holds 93% of its lead-in audience through its commercials. Bouvard adds, AM/FM radio should be part of the 71% to 78% optimal allocation to traditional media. The Advertising Research Foundation’s new “How Advertising Works” study advises that most of the media plan be allocated to traditional media, even for campaigns targeting 18-34 Millennials. Both TV and radio have a halo effect on digital impact. Recent Nielsen studies for multiple advertisers reveal that those exposed to the radio campaign have a higher recall of all other elements of the media plan. 5. TV and radio run their ads, and real people hear the ads. No fraud and bots here. Broadcast ads actually air. Real consumers are exposed. READ BLOG HERE

This is massive.” Adele is already worth appx. $124 million, according to this year’s Sunday Times Rich List. But that will more than double when she inks her new deal. In addition to her new mega deal, her fortune will soar even higher this year thanks to earnings from her sold-out 105-date tour.

THE MOUTH, MAY 23RD, 2016 –– A lawyer for iHeartMedia said the company has been harmed by the threats of default notices that started early this year reports The San Antonio Express News. The judge’s verdict, which is expected early this week, will either allow a group of bondholders to file default notices against the company or block the creditors from pushing the company to the brink of bankruptcy.
“There’s a disagreement in the interpretation” of the bond rules, iHeartMedia lawyer Kevin Huff acknowledged. The conflict arises from iHeartMedia’s transfer Dec. 3 of 100 million shares of its billboard subsidiary, Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc., from a holding-company subsidiary to another subsidiary. Darren Davis (shown), president of iHeartMedia’s networks, said the company is missing business opportunities because of uncertainty caused by the news of default notices. He added that the company has lost contract opportunities because it cannot hire hard-to-find technology talent it needs to run its operations.
The company has said in SEC filings that if it does not receive the permanent injunction it seeks to block future default notices, it will have 60 days to take actions to avoid bankruptcy that would follow if an avalanche of debt repayments from many other bondholders is triggered, possibly totaling more than $15 billion. One of those options is moving the 100 million shares back to the control of the bondholders. Battle Intensifies As Sumner Redstone Ousts Former Confidants
THE MOUTH, MAY 23RD, 2016 – Sumner Redstone has removed Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman and Viacom board member George Abrams from the seven-person trust that will determine the fate of both Viacom and CBS in the event of Sumner's incapacitation or death, reports Reuters. The move gives his daughter, Shari Redstone (shown), who is also on the trust and vice-chair of both CBS and Viacom, more certain control to determine the fate of her father's $40 billion media empire.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Viacom board members had been blocked from seeing the elder Redstone. According to cnn.com, a spokesman for Dauman called the steps "illegal and invalid" in an e-mailed statement to Reuters. "They are a shameful effort by Shari Redstone to seize control by unlawfully using her ailing father Sumner Redstone's name and signature. As she knows and as court proceedings and other facts have demonstrated, Sumner Redstone now lacks the capacity to have taken these steps," the spokesman said. "Sumner Redstone would never have summarily dismissed Philippe Dauman and George Abrams, his trusted friends and advisors for decades." Abrams and a spokeswoman for Shari Redstone did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment. Sumner Redstone and Dauman have worked together for more than 30 years, and Redstone has called Dauman "a great friend."
Trump Reaches Out To Milwaukee Host With Handwritten Note
THE MOUTH, MAY 22ND, 2016 –– Could this be a glimpse of the more 'presidential' Donald Trump? Charlie Sykes, popular host on Milwaukee's WTMJ, got an unexpected handwritten note from presumptive GOP nominee candidate. It was written with a “magic marker,” and sprawled across the front page of the New York Times. As you'll see in the closeup, it says: Charlie — I hope you can change your mind. Look forward to doing your show. I WILL WIN.
Sykes makes note of article's headline: "Once Against, Another Flank Of G.O.P. Warms Up to Trump." Sykes writes in rightwisconsin.com, The story recounts how some social conservatives who had spent most of the past year "opposing and condemning Trump, are now moving to embrace his candidacy..." Sykes calls the photo at left "my "DEWEY BEATS TRUMAN" pose."
"Okay, so I didn't see that coming. Not sure he really wants to do my show again, but he seems to be opening the door. Interesting. Perhaps we are in the midst of a Trump Charm Offensive. Despite the fact that Trump has publicly called me a "lowlife" and a "dummy," I do appreciate the outreach. (Mr. Trump is apparently willing to be more gracious than his legions of Trumpkins.) But, still #NeverTrump. PHOTOS/Courtesy of Charlie Sykes

STUDY: Podcast Listening By Adults Doubled In Past 5-Years
A Nielsen Scarborough study found that podcasting consumption is increasing with the number of adults listening to podcast during the past month doubling over the past five years. But who’s listening? What are their areas of interest? These questions are explored in their "If You Create It, Will They Come? Nielsen Scarborough found that podcasting consumption is on the rise with the number of adults 18 and older listening to a podcast during the past month doubling over the previous five years! But while anyone with a smartphone or a computer can become a podcaster, building a loyal audience is where the challenge begins. And with so many platforms vying for the attention of the consumer, selecting the right content is the key to success.
Nielsen Scarborough examined the lifestyles and behaviors of podcast listeners to identify the types of content that engaged these consumers and kept them coming back for more. Who Listens? The study found that podcast listeners are equally male and female, with the majority (70%) being between the ages of 18-44. They are 39% more likely to be single, 44% more likely to be a college graduate and 33% more likely to be employed in a white collar occupation. With an average household income of $83,700, podcast listeners exceed the national average by about $12,000.
As media consumption continues to shift more to on-demand and advertisers wanting to reach consumers must go beyond age and gender, knowing lifestyle and interests are critical to reach the right listener. So “yes,” they will come, but only if you fill your podcast with the right content. Methodology Podcast listeners include adults 18 and older who watched, listened to or downloaded a podcast on any device during the past 30 days. SEE MORE DETAILS HERE

[LISTEN] Radio Spinoff Would Likely Occur In Early 2017 Says Moonves
Says 'There Are A Lot of Companies Looking At CBS Radio'
THE MOUTH, MAY 20TH, 2016 –– During yesterday’s Q&A with the CBS Corp. chairman & CEO Leslie Moonves at the Needham Emerging Technology Conference in New York he was asked about the pending spinoff of its radio division. Moonves said, "There are a lot of companies looking at CBS Radio" and they are exploring every single possibility. "The radio business is still a very good business," he emphasized, but repeated that it's a slow-growth business. “There's a lot of interest in it and there should be,” Moonves said. “It’s a very solid, solid business.”
As for a time frame, Moonves said a spin-off would likely occur in the first quarter of 2017, but if someone wanted to acquire it sooner or a merger it could happen sooner. Once again he reiterated that radio is a great business but thought it would be better off on its own. With regard to other businesses CBS has sold, Moonves called the sale of it's record division in 1988 to Sony one of CBS' 'biggest mistakes. He said then-CEO Larry Tisch “couldn’t stand the guys in the record business. He thought there was a little too much drugs and rock ‘n roll.” But it “wasn’t a great deal. Sony Music has done very very well since then.” LISTEN HERE

Viacom Board Scraps Sumner Redstone's Annual Pay
THE MOUTH, MAY 19TH, 2016 –– Viacom's board on Wednesday decides to eliminate its annual pay for ailing founder, Sumner Redstone, who turns 93 next week. According to a person familiar with the situation, The Los Angeles Times reports Redstone was paid a $2-million salary for the 2015 fiscal year, according to a regulatory filing. The board's decision comes nearly two weeks after Redstone struggled to answer questions during an 18-minute deposition for his mental-competency trial.
According to a transcript conducted at Redstone's home, it showed that he had trouble answering basic questions, such as his given name: Sumner Murray Rothstein. Last week, a judge in Los Angeles stopped short of declaring Redstone mentally competent. But Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David J. Cowan found that Redstone was in command of his faculties enough to know who he wanted in charge of his healthcare -- his daughter, Shari Redstone (shown). Despite the pay cut, the billionaire showed 2014 that he received $13.2 million in compensation, including a $10-million cash bonus. In fiscal 2013, he received a compensation package valued at $36.2 million, including changes in the value of his pension. Court papers also revealed that he had given his former girlfriends Manuela Herzer and Sydney Holland, approximately $150 million over a five-year period.

iHeart Court Battle Being Eyed Closely By Other Groups
THE MOUTH, MAY 18TH, 2016 –– In a case being watched closely by other U.S. companies looking to restructure their debt, the iHeartMedia’s lawsuit against investors comes down to the definition of an investment. According to The San Antonio Express News, If state District Judge Cathleen Stryker rules against iHeartMedia, it could kick off a cascade of events that could quickly trigger technical default on as much as $15 billion of its bonds and put iHeartMedia at risk of bankruptcy, company executives have said in court. The paper reports both sides tried to no avail to find a compromise before the trial, but may still be able to strike a deal that allows iHeartMedia to avoid bankruptcy if it loses in court.
iHeartMedia has been battling a group of its bondholders since early January, when investors began threatening to force the company into default on some of its notes over a transaction they claim technically violated their bond agreements. At issue is whether iHeartMedia’s Dec. 3 transfer of 100 million shares of company-owned stock from one subsidiary to another qualified as an investment. The transaction was done as part of a complicated strategy to reduce iHeartMedia’s financing costs on its staggering $20.8 billion in debt. On Monday, iHeartMedia lawyer Kevin Huff told Stryker that the transfer was proper because it fits the definition of “investment” in its debt agreements. “Investment has meaning beyond a profit motive. This was a permitted investment,” Huff said in court this week. Huff added, IHeartMedia performed similar transactions in 2008 and 2009 by moving cash into subsidiaries designed to buy company debt at a discount. “No one threatened notices of default then,” Huff said. iHeart's Darren Davis Tells Judge Rumored Financial Trouble Keeping Skiddish Young Job Candidates From Joining Company'
THE MOUTH, MAY 18TH, 2016 –– Among those testifying in court yesterday in San Antonio was Darren Davis reports forbes.com, President of iHeartRadio. “It’s disrupting our operating business every day,” said Davis. He told the judge that the company’s line of credit was recently reduced from $1.5 million to $50,000, hampering its ability to quickly respond to market opportunities. And two of its largest manufacturing partners, who offer iHeartRadio as an integrated feature of products like televisions and cars, also claim to be “very concerned”’ about sticking with a company rumored to be in financial trouble.
“It damages a brand perhaps irreparably.” Davis said and feared that at least one of the company’s partnerships wouldn’t survive any potential bankruptcy “based on conversations we’ve had.” “We’ve had $20 billion in debt for the last eight years, and we’ve never had any bankruptcy threat until the last 60 days,” Davis told Texas State Judge Cathleen Stryker. The default threat has also kept skittish young job candidates from joining the company, added Davis. "Because of the drumbeat of negative news bombarding their social media accounts.
Davis denied under questioning by the lenders’ attorney that his comments conflict with recent trade-press assurances by Bob Pittman, iHeartMedia’s CEO, that company operations haven’t been disrupted by the default threat. He said those comments were aimed at reassuring company employees worried their jobs are in jeopardy. “He’s trying to calm them down, let them know their card key is still going to work,” Davis said. “But we’re still ordering pizza on Fridays, and we’re still ordering bagels to start Mondays.” The case is IHeartCommunications Inc. v. Benefit Street Partners LLC, 2016CI04006, District Court, Bexar County Texas (San Antonio).
'Is The Name 'Podcasting' Hurting Its Growth, Asks Jacobs Media's Seth Resler
THE MOUTH, MAY 18TH, 2016 –– Jacobs Media head Fred Jacobs calls Seth Resler their resident podcast maven and this week, Seth sought the wisdom and counsel of some the smartest people in the podcasting space to settle a score that has been brewing for some time now, whether the word “podcasting” is preventing the medium from reaching its full potential. Resler points to Leo Laporte, founder of the This Week in Tech (TWiT) Network, and widely respected as one of the forefathers of podcasting, yet he has famously shunned the word in favor of “netcasts.” To settle the argument once and for all, Seth asked a number of luminaries in the podcasting world to respond to a simple statement: “The name ‘podcasting’ is holding the medium back and ought to be changed.” You can click below to read numerous responses. Among the many was a comment from Dean Cappello, EVP & Chief Content Officer for WNYC/New York's Public Radio.
“The history of the world is littered with less-than-elegant show names and handles and identifiers. ‘Cable TV’ was an awful term until HBO and CNN gave it value. Whether it’s ‘podcasting’ or some other term, it’s up to us, producers, to make the term exciting and relevant and sticky by defining it with amazing stuff. ‘Podcasting’ may not be natural until someone produces Serial or Radiolab or Another Round and the broad audience understands what it is. You might ask yourself where we would be if Apple had not created an app for ‘podcasts’ and put it on the home screen.“ READ MORE HERE
Seth Resler, along with Amplifi's Steve Goldstein are presenting two exclusive, back-to-back sessions on podcasting at this year's MSBC in Atlanta set for Aug. 11 & 12 - Details coming.

Radio Still One Of Harvey's Favorite Things To Do
As Host Mulls Cutting Back His Work Load, It's Apparent Radio Won't Be One Of Them
THE MOUTH, MAY 17TH, 2016 –– Steve Harvey will soon be taking on yet another TV show and, along with his Premiere syndicated radio show may have to consider cutting back on at least one of them. As of now, he host four hit TV shows "Little Big Shots on NBC, Celebrity Family Feud on ABC (last summer's biggest new series in total viewers and adults 18-49), the syndicated Family Feud and his syndicated daytime talk show, and an ABC business-reality series tentatively titled Dream Funder, ordered for midseason. Somehow he's able to squeeze in a daily radio show 272 days a year. Harvey tells Lynch, "I do love all of these gigs, but something is going to have to go for sure," he says. "I've only got five fingers, and there's five holes in the dam right now." Harvey says he and his wife Marjorie—and not his agents at William Morris Endeavor—will decide which project he'll give up. THE MOUTH, MAY 16TH, 2016 –– Atlanta's Channel 2 Action News reported over the weekend on scammers attempting to rip off Georgia charities. Among them was Bert’s Big Adventure, a well-known charity of the syndicated Bert Show, which has sent 15 chronically or terminally ill children and their families to Disney World in Orlando each year for the past 15 years.
According The AJC's Rodney Ho, The show had received a bogus check for $44,850. Then the supposed donor would request $15,000 back because the amount was an “error.” Bert officials flagged the scammer because they couldn’t get them on the phone and felt his request seemed fishy and reported it to the authorities instead.
Bert (Weiss) tells Jockline, "The reality is that people wake up in the morning looking to scam anybody or anything. Preying on whomever they thing they can get some cash from. Old people? Kids charities? Sickens me. I certainly am not taking it personally. But if this person got away with it that would have been 3 less families would could have taken on Bert's Big Adventure. My hope is that any other show that has their own non profit reads or listens to the story 'cause this person is now trying to extort from charities all over the country." Bobby Bones Admits Being Behind Billboard Stunt In New Memoir
THE MOUTH, MAY 16TH, 2016 ––The Washington Post Emily Yahr calls Bobby Bones 'sort of the Ryan Seacrest of the country music world ... Like Seacrest, Bones is everywhere, including sports talk radio, award shows and on tour with his band, the Raging Idiots. Now with his latest memoir, “Bare Bones,” set for release this week, he reveals taking drastic measures to get listeners to like him during his first year in Nashville.
Arriving in Nashville in 2013 with no experience in country radio, "some listeners loved it; others took an instant dislike," says Yahr, but a year into his run, he was getting tired of being known as “the weird radio guy.” “My attitude wasn’t winning me any friends — or listeners. I needed to get people to like me, or at least feel sorry for me,” he writes. The plan? “I launched a massive negative PR campaign against myself to garner sympathy.”
Bones says he spent nearly $13,000 of his own money to put up billboards all over Nashville for three weeks with a message: “GO AWAY BOBBY BONES.” (shown). Bones says people started speculating who it could be, from record labels to other radio stations to country singers who didn’t like him. When media outlets tried to investigate, they found the billboards were purchased by an organization called “Anti-BOBBY BONES.” Even now, Bones still can’t quite believe he got away with it. No one guessed it was him. In the book, he admits the billboards were “pretty desperate measures to take to get more ratings.” ORDER HERE, READ ARTICLE HERE

BBC REBOOT: Distinctive Content First; Ratings Second
THE MOUTH, MAY 13TH, 2016 –– Making it clear he was "emphatically not saying the BBC should not be popular," The UK's Culture Secretary John Whittingdale issued a 'white paper,' part of a major overhaul of how the government-owned BBC is run. According to bbc.com, the White Paper is the government's proposals for the Royal Charter, which will likely be debated in Parliament, but the final shape of the Royal Charter is determined by the culture secretary.
Among the key points proposed by Whittingdale suggests "Commissioning editors should ask consistently of new programming: 'Is this idea sufficiently innovative and high quality?' rather than simply 'How will it do in the ratings?'" Whittingale also raised the issue of star pay; a requirement for all employees and freelancers who earn more than £450,000 ($681,000) to be named. The move will affect some of the corporation's best-known names, such as Chris Evans, Gary Lineker and Graham Norton, although their actual salaries will not be revealed. But a senior figure at the corporation cautioned against cutting the salaries of the highest-paid too much.
James Purnell, director of strategy and digital at the BBC, said "We pay less than the private sector already but we need to make sure that we don't go so low that we can't get brilliant people like Chris Evans (R) to work for us." He added the corporation had already cut its talent bill by 15%, adding: "It's been independently reviewed and been given a good bill of health. "Clearly we need to get the balance between getting the right people to work for the BBC but also paying less than the private sector."
Responding to the White Paper, BBC director-general Tony Hall said it "delivers a mandate for the strong, creative BBC the public believe in. "At the end, we have an 11-year charter, a licence fee guaranteed for 11 years, and an endorsement of the scale and scope of what the BBC does today," he said. But he added there were some areas where the BBC will continue to talk to the government to address remaining issues, including allowing the National Audit Office to be the BBC's auditor and how the new board is appointed. He said: "We have an honest disagreement with the government on this. I do not believe that the appointments proposals for the new unitary board are yet right. "We will continue to make the case to government. It is vital for the future of the BBC that its independence is fully preserved." PHOTO/photosounds - shutterstock READ STORY HERE

According to The Wrap, Apple and Swift have been BFFs since burying a hatchet over artists payments during the service’s three-month free trials last year. As the company was ramping up its launch of Apple Music, Swift threatened to withhold her album “1989” from the service because the company’s deals wouldn’t pay artists, writers or producers for listening during three-month trials. Apple quickly capitulated and reversed the policy, and the two have been cozy ever since. WATCH VIDEO HERE

Like many days in Charlotte, traffic was a nightmare. I was traveling on I-485 when the 'mystery moment' happened. Traffic abruptly stopped and I didn’t. I don’t remember what happened. The next thing I knew I was surrounded by a lot of people – emergency technicians and firefighters. I was trapped with the front dash of my car on top of me. I was immobile and I was having a hard time breathing. The dashboard of my car was crushing my chest. At some point I heard one of the rescue workers say, 'Look, that’s Larry Sprinkle the weather guy'. I told the firefighters they needed to use the Jaws of Life to get me out and they responded..."
Larry suffered several broken bones including two broken legs in multiple places, a broken ankle, broken arm, and cracked ribs. He underwent surgery where they put rods and pins in both legs. Larry will remain in the hospital as he continues to recover. He and his family request privacy at this time. The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries and has been treated and released from the hospital. WBT's John Hancock tells Jockline, "Sprinkle was once a part of Big Ways Charlotte and worked with Jay Thomas and then Murphy in The Morning. Trump answered, "I've actually done that Don. Frankly, I like John McCain and John McCain is a hero. Also heroes are people who get caught or don't get caught. They're all heroes as far as I'm concerned. And that's the way it should be."
"So do you regret saying that? asked Imus. "You know I like not to regret anything. You say things and what I said, frankly is what I said. And some people like what I said, if you want to know the truth. There are many people that like what I said. You know after I said that, my poll numbers went up seven points.” Imus said someone like Trump, who got multiple Vietnam War draft deferments, shouldn’t be criticizing someone like McCain. “I understand that. Well, I was going to college, I had student deferments. I also got a great lottery number,” said Trump LISTEN HERE AT BUZZFEED

Trump Now Regrets Crude Comments On Stern Show
THE MOUTH, MAY 11TH, 2016 –– Presumptive republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said in a recent interview in The Washington Post, "he and Stern “had great moments” on the air, but acknowledged he would not have said certain things had he known then that he would eventually be running for office. “Or I wouldn’t have gone on the show because that is the easier way of doing it,” Trump said. Trump said Stern is a good friend, “a really good guy and a very different guy when you take the radio microphone away.”
Among their chats between 1990 and 2005 included Trump saying, “A person who is very flat-chested is very hard to be a 10.” Another had Stern asking Trump shortly after Princess Diana’s death in 1997. “You could’ve nailed her.” “I think I could have,” Trump said. Now Trump’s crude comments which have already been raised during the primaries, could be moved to high-rotation once the general election between and presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton gets underway. Wapo's Mary Jordan says, "Democrats see Trump’s history as a potent weapon to use against him and other Republicans this fall. Trump’s exchanges with Stern, many of which BuzzFeed posted online this year, are featured in a new ad by the Dem. candidate in the Ark. Senate race." WATCH HERE
(S)ex Assault Charges Dropped Against Canadian Radio Star; Signs Peace Bond
THE MOUTH MAY 11TH, 2016 –– Today in court, Jian Ghomeshi was found not guilty on choking and all (s)ex assault charges. And, according to cbc.com, charges won't be appealed Former CBC Radio host Jian Ghomeshi no longer faces any criminal charges after signing a peace bond at Toronto's Old City Hall courthouse this morning. This led to the prosecution withdrawing the final count of (s)exual assault he was to be tried in June. Ghomeshi apologized to complainant Kathryn Borel, who waived the publication ban on her name, saying that he regrets that his actions made her feel uncomfortable in the workplace.
The court heard that Ghomeshi has been seeing a therapist for 18 months and will continue to do so. Ghomeshi told the court. His mother and sister were sitting in the courtroom and he apologized to them, and his other supporters, as well. Borel, whose complaint dated back to 2008, told reporters that she wanted to avoid the stress of a trial and felt that the apology would be an acknowledgement of wrongdoing. Judge William Horkins acquitted Ghomeshi of four counts of (s)exual assault and one count of choking to overcome resistance on March 24, in a scathing decision in which the judge accused all three complainants of lying or trying to conceal evidence from the court.

Judge Dismisses Sumner Redstone’s Competency Suit; Ex-Girlfriend Files Separate Suit Against Sumner's Daughter
THE MOUTH, MAY 10TH, 2016 –– A California judge tossed out a case challenging the mental competency of 92-year-old Sumner Redstone, the controlling shareholder of Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp. reports wjs.com. Judge David Cowan of Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday dismissed the lawsuit that argued Redstone was incompetent when he made a decision last fall to evict former girlfriend and longtime companion Manuela Herzer from his home and remove her as his health-care agent.
“In now granting this motion, the court is not making any ultimate finding relating to Redstone’s mental capacity, one way or another or whether he was unduly influenced,” Judge Cowan wrote. He said Mr. Redstone is presumed to have capacity, and Ms. Herzer’s expert witness failed to establish that he lacked capacity when he changed his health-care agent directive. The judge dismissed the suit with prejudice, meaning the complaint can’t be amended. Herzer had accused Ms. Redstone of manipulating her father and orchestrating her dismissal. Ms. Herzer’s lawyer, Pierce O’Donnell, said they would appeal. Her lawyers have now filed a separate suit against Sumner's Daughter and children.
Meanwhile, Viacom’s board is considering whether to cut Redstone’s pay as chairman emeritus after the legal battle highlighted his health problems. Viacom and CBS had already scaled back his pay considerably, to $2 million at Viacom in fiscal 2015 and $1.76 million at CBS reports WSJ.

Erin posted on Facebook, "Dear friends, we got a frantic call Friday morning during the show, and came home to find the wonderful paramedics from Fire Station #4 here in SLC working on our MacLean. Our amazing nanny Mele found MacLean unresponsive in his bed. By the time we got home the paramedics told us our son was gone, but they continued to work on him to give him every chance ... Most of you know that 'Cleanie' was on the autism spectrum, and for those who truly loved him JUST AS HE WAS and saw his beauty and light, thank you for being in our boy’s life,” wrote Erin Fraser. MacLean is survived by his twin brother, Zach, and sister, Zoe.
Todd & Erin have handled mornings in SLC since the 90's beginning on KISN 97.1, then B98.7 and in 2013 joining Rewind 100.7 FM
Q100 Atlanta Draws 'Special Notice' By Nielsen Over Online Contest Question
THE MOUTH, MAY 10TH, 2016 –– Q100 (WWWQ) Atlanta was flagged by Nielsen over an online contest question prior to its April report. Nielsen included a “special notice” in the April 2016 ratings about Q100’s transgression but no direct punishment reports The AJC's Rodney Ho. Q100, in an online form to loyal listeners in March, asked if they were using a people meter. "Fishing for PPM users is not kosher," Nielsen wrote. And it might also “prompt” those who are Q100 fans to say yes to participating in the people meter surveying. There is no evidence Q100 was able to identify any actual panelists. And the survey now no longer has the question.
In Nielsen’s explanation they wrote: “Special station activities tend to be different from one another and acting in full transparency, Nielsen added a special notation to the April 2016 eBook. They added that WWWQ's management has cooperated in their investigation and found no basis for concluding the contest resulted in WWWQ-FM learning the identity of any PPM panelist."

Judge Moved By Sumner Redstone Testimony In Competency Lawsuit
Redstone Calls Former Companion A 'F---ing B---h' In Video Deposition
THE MOUTH, MAY 9TH, 2016 –– A Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge is expected to decide today (5/9) whether to dismiss a lawsuit brought on by a former companion of Sumner Redstone, or proceed with a trial to decide whether he is mentally competent reports The LA Times. Last Friday the trial started out with an fiery 18-minute videotaped deposition of Redstone, who described his ex-girlfriend, Manuela Herzer as a 'F--king B---h' and he wanted her "out of his life." Judge David J. Cowan, apparently moved by Redstone's testimony, said, "How can I sit here and say after listening to that video, 'No, you can't have what you want.' ... That's a tough call."
Herzer was Redstone's primary caregiver and the agent in charge of his healthcare before Redstone had her removed from his Beverly Park home, and he cut her out of his will four days later. Herzer brought on a lawsuit in late November, saying Redstone was not in his right mind. Redstone now says he would like his daughter, Shari Redstone (shown), to oversee his healthcare decisions. Herzer's expert witness, Dr. Stephen Read, testified Friday that he believes that Redstone suffers from dementia, and that the mogul's angry outbursts were evidence of such a disease. Read examined Redstone, who has a severe speech impediment, in late January.
The Redstone family controls nearly 80% of the voting shares of CBS and Viacom. The $42-billion media empire includes such prominent assets as MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, BET, Showtime, CBS and Paramount Pictures.

NYT: Bobby Bones Fueling 'Resurgence Of Humor In Country Music'
THE MOUTH, MAY 6TH, 2016 –– In an lengthy New York Times piece on Bobby Bones, host of the Premiere Syndicated Bobby Bones Show, writer Jewly Hight says, "Lately, he’s been shining a light on a trend that he helped cultivate — a resurgence of humor in country music, which has made modest hits of albums that let mainstream and alternative country fans feel as if they’re in on the joke. Bones’s band, the Raging Idiots, that features his show producer Eddie Garcia (shown right), recently released its first full-length album, “The Critics Give It Five Stars,” which not debuted atop Billboard’s comedy albums chart but landed at No. 4 on the country chart."
Mike Dungan, the chairman and chief executive of Universal Music Group Nashville, noted that every country songwriting era has had wits like Roger Miller and Tom T. Hall. Brad Paisley has parlayed his drollness into a long-running gig as a host of the Country Music Association Awards and a new one as M.C. for the Wild West Comedy Festival in Nashville. “I think it’s always been there,” Mr. Dungan said. “However, I do believe that in tough times, people want to feel better. I think these types of songs are a really great Band-Aid to what’s going on in your life.”
Hight adds, "On the Raging Idiots album, he accentuated his own vocal limitations with guest performances from Carrie Underwood and Mr. Paisley. “I don’t want people to think I’m trying to win best male vocalist at the C.M.A.s. I can sing just good enough to be funny.” READ ARTICLE HERE

[LISTEN] 'There's Been A Lot Of Interest From Outside Parties,' Says CBS' Moonves With Regard To Radio Separation
THE MOUTH, MAY 4TH, 2016 –– CBS Chairman/CEO Leslie Moonves was quite upbeat in yesterday'Ss Q1 call saying, "I'm extremely pleased to tell you that CBS has turned in a phenomenal first quarter. Revenue was up 10% to $3.85 billion, the highest we've ever had in the first quarter in our history." Moonves added ,"Obviously, the Super Bowl played a big part in this, but even when you take out the Super Bowl, and our three extra NFL games, underlying network advertising was up 12%, the strongest we've seen in a long, long time." As for radio, Moonves said, "We are working towards separating our radio business from the CBS Corporation ... there's also been a lot of interest from outside parties. So, we have a number of different options to consider." Later in the call in its Q&A with analysts, Bryan Kraft - Deutsche Bank Securities asked CBS' COO Joseph R. Ianniello about CBS pending radio separation. "You mentioned, do youexpect that to be structured as an IPO of the business with proceeds going to CBS and CBS retaining a stake? Or will it be a complete separation of the business?
"Yeah, we do anticipate a traditional two-step and IPO where it'd be sub 20%, again, similar to outdoor," said Ianniello. "If you just looked at that as a template where CBS would own again, 80%-plus initially. But then we would follow that up later with a full separation of the assets, probably again an exchange offer vis-à-vis a split-off. Again, very similar to what we just did with outdoor. That being said, there's a lot of other opportunities in front of us. So, we will explore all those opportunities and pursue the one that we believe will maximize value for shareholders." Ianniello added that the company would continues synergies with CBS Radio. “There’s obviously a lot of stations that have call letters with our call letters on them, and so we’ll preserve that. We’re trying to add to both the profitability of the TV and radio stations, not make one go up and the other go down.” LISTEN TO CALL HERE

THE MOUTH, MAY 4TH, 2016 –– Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc. announced operating results for the three month period ended March 31, 2016 and posted a net revenue gain of 13.2% to $27.5 million. The $3.2 million, or 13.2%, year-over-year increase in net revenue during the three months ended March 31, 2016, primarily reflects higher revenue at the Company’s Tampa-St. Petersburg and Charlotte market clusters.

RECORDS: Cabbie Who Videotaped Talk Host's (S)ex Plea 'Quietly' Paid $40,000 By City
THE MOUTH, MAY 3RD, 2016 –– According to records, the city of New Orleans quietly paid $40,000 last year to a cab driver who claimed he was jailed on bogus charges based on the word of a local radio host reports The Advocate. Jennifer Gaubert, a former WGSO talk host, was seen in the video pleading with to driver to have (s)ex with her in the front seat of his taxi. According to The Advocate, it was revealed the city cut a check to Hervey Farrell last summer to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit over his August 2013 arrest on voyeurism and extortion counts. The city attorney’s office had earlier refused to turn over the settlement terms, citing ongoing litigation that ended last week when a judge formally dismissed Farrell’s related claims against the radio show host and attorney, Jennifer Gaubert.
Gaubert, 35, had gotten into Farrell’s White Fleet cab early on April 6, 2012 after a night of drinking at Galatoire’s on Bourbon Street for a ride to her Lakeview home. She proceeded to crawl over the seat, lift her skirt while urging the cabbie to engage in (s)exual intercourse. In the video, Farrell repeatedly rebuffs Gaubert’s slurring advances before she exits the cab. He quickly filed a civil claim against Gaubert, whose radio show on WGSO, “Law Out Loud,” ended shortly after the cab ride. Gaubert told New Orleans Police at the time that Farrell was extorting her under threat of releasing the video. This resulted in Farrell sitting in jail for more than 27 hours before making a $21,000 bond. In 2014, Gaubert was convicted in Municipal Court on a simple battery count from the incident.

When Will Radio Start Acting Like the 800 Pound Gorilla? Asks Fred Jacobs
THE MOUTH, MAY 2ND, 2016 –– SiriusXM CEO Jim Meyer's 800-pound gorilla metaphor last week (JL 4/28) to describe terrestrial radio caught the attention of many, including consultant Fred Jacobs who says 'This isn’t the first time a satellite radio exec has made this exact comparison between AM/FM radio and large simian beasts.
"You get the feeling that in the halls of SiriusXM there are photos of an oversized ape to remind employees precisely what they’re up against in their fight to carve out a larger chunk of the media usage pie – especially in cars," adds Jacobs. "As tech companies do their R&D and discover that consumers want a device and a product “as simple as a radio,” it begs the question why the real thing – the 800 pound gorilla – isn’t doing more to take the lead, improve its time-honored position in the hearts of minds of consumers, and remind the advertising and marketing community that everyone is trying to copy, mimic, and replicate a product that already exists. Radio continues to see itself through a 20th century lens, often missing the point that while consumers have a bevy of options from which to choose, the original innovation called “radio” delivers a product that already meets many needs, from variety to ubiquity to ease of use." I can't really share the details about it but there's a lot of good things going on that I can't tell you till later in June when we’ll be making the announcement...This other band I’m jamming with is it’s own band with its own band name.” Bailey then asks “Hold on for a second, did you get the gig for STP?” Stapp replies, “I can’t say man, I can’t say.” Jason then pushes “You got the gig for STP. That’s exactly what you’re talking about.” Stapp states “I can confirm or deny.” Scott also hints that he may be joining Stone Temple Pilots when saying “I will tell you this, there is a 6 degree separation connection between this new project and the band you mentioned.” Bailey asks “Is it the tour bus? Because Weiland actually died on the tour bus you use to tour on.” Surprised, Scott says “Dude you are just on point aren’t you?” LISTEN HERE

THE MOUTH, MAY 2ND, 2016 –– Among the many bits and promotions taking place over radio during prom season, 95.5 KOOL-FM's Chad Mitchell's was one that caught our eye. Mitchell, one half of The Maria & Chad morning show, reached out to his prom date back in 1992. He and Lori Judge both went to high school at Princeton High School in Illinois. Mitchell was able to track her down in Savannah, GA where she lives with her husband of 12-years.
Laurie reminded Chad that she only agreed to go on the date because they double-dated with each of their best friends - Ouch! She also recalled the two of them parking later, but Chad kept his lips sealed on that one fearing his wife may be listening. LISTEN HERE

Visually Appealing Stations Experience More Listening Shows NextRadio Study
THE MOUTH, APRIL 29TH, 2016 –– An Analysis of 11 million NextRadio listening hours shows that radio stations that enhance their terrestrial broadcast with visuals and related content average nearly twice the tune-ins and 2 hours more listening, per listener, per month compared to stations which only display their station logo.
“Today consumers are part of an ever evolving app-world, and they expect to see and engage with content on their smartphones. By providing local FM radio listeners a live look at what is airing in their market before they tune-in, NextRadio provides a compelling new listener engagement option,” said Paul Brenner (shown), President of NextRadio.
"Not only does the data show these stations experience more tune-ins and overall listening, but it also shows that the listening gap is widening between those that provide enticing visuals and related content versus those that do not,” said Brenner.

"I apologize to the show’s producers and listeners — if I didn’t like the Hugh Hewitt show so much I’d have said “Ugh, 4:35 AM interview, no way!” In my head, I was able to wake up for 5 minutes and do the interview before getting another few hours of sleep.
