Steve Goldstein Exits Saga To Launch Amplifi Media
The top of the iTunes podcast chart is dominated by NPR and affiliates. They have done a tremendous job but there is a world of mainstream topics yet to be explored for on-demand-audio' - Goldstein
THE MOUTH, MARCH 27TH, 2015 –– After 28 years as EVP/group programming chief for Saga Communications, it may take some time to unlocking Steve Goldstein's name from his longtime home of Saga. The acclaimed programmer announced yesterday the formation of Amplifi Media, LLC, specializing in the development of digital audio-on-demand (podcast) content. “As connected cars, Bluetooth and smartphones converge, time-shifted audio will grow exponentially. People will listen to content at a time and place of their choosing, just as is occurring rapidly in the Television industry with Netflix, DVR’s and on-demand video,” Mr. Goldstein predicted. Amplifi will concentrate on great storytelling, compelling content and fresh voices on a variety of popular subjects, and will adapt, craft and focus the product for the unique needs of the digital audio business. Goldstein stated, “The top of the iTunes podcast chart is dominated by NPR and affiliates. They have done a tremendous job but there is a world of mainstream topics yet to be explored for on-demand-audio. That’s where Amplifi will live.” Ed Christian, Chairman, President and CEO of Saga Communications, Inc., thanked Steve for his many contributions. To assist in the transition, Goldstein has agreed to serve as a consultant to the Company. Goldstein added, “Saga has been a remarkable home for 28 years. We have built some terrific brands and grown top talent. Best of all has been working with a wonderfully gifted staff. While I will miss them and Ed Christian, I am pleased to continue with Saga in a consulting capacity and am excited to move on to a more entrepreneurial role with my own company where I will be focusing on digital on-demand audio.”
[LISTEN] Little Big Town's 'Girl Crush' Causing Stir Over Lyrics
THE MOUTH, MARCH 27TH, 2015 –– Little Big Town's latest single "Girl Crush" is being pulled at some stations after fans complained the song's lyrics are inappropriate, reports the Washington Post. At WOW 104.3/Boise, host Alana Lynn (below left) told a local paper that she was surprised when fans threatened to boycott her station saying the song "promotes the gay agenda." She tells Jockline: "It's been really funny since the article came out....people from outside of Idaho are calling me a close-minded homophobe and the state of Idaho is ready to give me the key."
And what lyrics are causing the commotion: "I want to taste her lips, yeah 'cause they taste like you - I want to drown myself in a bottle of her perfume - I want her long blond hair, I want her magic touch - Yeah 'cause maybe then, you’d want me just as much - I got a girl crush." According to the band, the song isn't about a woman in love with another woman. It's about a scorned woman who is trying to understand why her man left her. "Country music was built on songs about heartache and jealousy," Little Big Town's Phillip Sweet said of the song in an interview. Premiere syndicated host Bobby Bones, while interviewing Little Big Town, expressed his frustration saying "It shouldn’t even matter if it’s a lesbian song, is the first thing," Bones said on his show. "Is it frustrating to you that here is your song — that is one of the Top 10 sellers for weeks and weeks and weeks — and people on the radio are still afraid to play it because they think it’s a 'lesbian song?' Of note, Washington Post writer Emily Yahr is a listener of the Bobby Bones show who's been championing the song for months. In case you haven't heard 'Girl Crush' LISTEN HERE
Chicago Hosts Issue Apologies Following Inappropriate Tweets
THE MOUTH, MARCH 27TH, 2015 –– A couple of sports/talk hosts at CBS Radio's WSCR AM 670 Chicago have now apologized for an exchange of tweets involving Aiyana Cristal (L) a female sportscaster from Comcast SportsNet Chicago. According to blogger Robert Feder, The Score's midday co-host Matt Spiegel and afternoon co-host Dan Bernstein triggered a social media firestorm following series of comments Wednesday about Cristal's physical attributes. Host Matt Spiegel has since apologized for the incident.
Among the comments, Score host Dan Bernstein posted: “I have no rooting interest in her work, but enjoy her giant boobs.” Spiegel: “I am improbably distracted from them by her professional discomfort. It’s a crime.” Bernstein: “That’s a complicated thought. Unpacking that is beyond me.” Rod Zimmerman, senior vice president and market manager of CBS Radio Chicago, did not respond immediately to a request for comment. Sources at the Score said no disciplinary action was being considered against Spiegel or Bernstein. Later, what Bernstein referred to as the “Twitter kerfuffle,” said on the air: “I’m an idiot. There are certain times where you can be childish and crass and other times where it’s just really stupid to be a child. My tweet was childish, my tweet was crass and unnecessary, and I’m sorry I dragged an innocent person into it who’s doing a job, and I made an observation I shouldn’t have made, and it was childish and silly and stupid. . . . I feel bad about it.”

[WATCH] KIIS 106.5's Kyle And Jackie O Team With Ed Sheeran To Surprise Listener With $80,000 Wedding & Song
THE MOUTH, MARCH 27TH, 2015 –– KIIS 1065’s Kyle & Jackie O surprised struggling young Sydney couple Kya and Matt Debono by giving them a dream wedding, worth $80,000, the couple thought things couldn’t get any better. But Kyle & Jackie, who were among the wedding guests today, had one more surprise… Kya and Matt had chosen ‘Thinking Out Loud’, their favourite song, as the first dance as husband and wife but they never imagined Ed Sheeran himself would stop by the reception to perform it for them. The shock and then joy on the bride’s face is priceless, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd as Ed Sheeran gave a genuine and beautifully flawless acoustic performance. A little over a month ago, Kyle and Jackie O received an email from Matt explaining that his dream was to surprise the love of his life, and mother of two, with the wedding she was planning but had to postpone indefinitely. Money had always been tight for the young family, with Matt unemployed, but after the sudden death of Kya’s mother in 2012, it looked as though their plans for a small wedding with family and friends may never happen. Last week, Kyle and Jackie O had the young couple come to the studio under the guise of participating in a new radio segment but then surprised them on air by gifting them with the wedding of their dreams worth $80,000. Concerns For "Brian" After John Laws Reduces Caller To Tears - On Sydney Australia’s 2SM, John Laws reduced an 80-year-old caller to tears after the elderly man called to talk about being (s)exually assaulted as a child. It's not the first time the veteran jock has found himself in trouble when discussing (s)exual assault with callers, suggesting to a female listener in 2013, women who dress provocatively were “rape bait”. The call in which “Brian” revealed his ordeal at the hands of a male attacker has angered Dr. Cathy Kezelman, President of ASCA (Adults Surviving Child Abuse) who is “disappointed” at the level of ignorance shown by Laws. During the call Laws suggested "Brian", “...go to the pub and have a lemonade for God’s sake.” Dr. Kezelman said, “Announcers who receive these calls can do best by listening, hearing, validating and being empathic, and finally provide information for the caller encouraging them to seek professional support.”

GAME ON: ESPN 980's Man Cave Set To Debut Following Delay
THE MOUTH, MARCH 25TH, 2015 –– Following a strange turn of events a couple of weeks back, ESPN 980/Wash. DC' highly publicized new Man Cave Show is set to return AGAIN following an unexplained delay. According to The Washington Post, it will make its debut Monday, two weeks after it was abruptly shelved, a move which led to accusations that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, who also owns the radio station, was seeking to kill the program to silence a well-known media critic. Adding to the drama, someone made prank calls to WTEM this month claiming to be the president of ESPN and demanded the show’s cancellation. Although a hoax, the person making them mimicked ESPN President John Skipper’s Southern drawl and knew enough about ESPN 980’s inner workings to initially convince station executives it was the real deal. The Man Cave will be co-hosted by former Washington Post columnist Jason Reid (shown) and veteran radio and TV personality Chris Paul. With an original debut set for March 16th, the morning kicked off with Mike & Mike and offered no explanation of what happened. Instead. As Jockline reported, sports rival 106.7 the Fan (WJFK-FM), had a field day with launch fail mocking the incident.

[WATCH] Host Lands Car Loaner With Nudge From Governor
THE MOUTH, MARCH 25TH, 2015 –– Every host alive has experienced the benefits of mentioning a product on-air, like pizza, coffee or donuts, only to have one or more local merchants come knocking at the station's door with goodies galore. Numerous others have enjoyed a loaner car in station promotion. But a Corvette? Here's the short story: According to politico.com, New Jersey 101.5 host Eric Scott was interviewing Governor Chris Christie last week and mentioned that he wasn't paid much. Christie started urging the show’s sponsor, the Lester Glenn Auto Group, to give Scott a free car. One caller recommended a Corvette, and Christie suggested something dark blue. Voila! Lester Glenn president Adam Kraushaar showed up at New Jersey 101.5 (WKXW-FM) studios and presented Scott with the keys to a brand new dark blue 2015 Corvette Stingray. Granted, it was a loaner, but some, arggggg, cried conflict and made it out to be way more than just some amazing publicity for the dealership and one heck of a short-term ride for Scott. Lester Glenn VP of operations argued that it was just a temporary loaner, “We didn’t give it to him,” he said. Alex Berkett, EVP/Townsquare Media, owner of New Jersey 101.5, also defended Scott's acceptance of the gift, calling it the result of "an unsolicited humorous comment made by Governor Christie." “Neither New Jersey 101.5 owner Townsquare Media, nor Mr. Scott, paid for use of the automobile,” Berkett told PolitickerNJ. “The car belongs to Lester Glenn Auto Group." Hats off to Townsquare for clearing the air on this non-controversial story and to all the other hosts who will likely start mentioning their love for Corvettes on future shows. Just saying.

Radio 1 Head Says Madonna Isn't Banned; Just Needs Better Songs
Radio 1 Now Setting Up A ‘Youth Council’ To Tell It What Is Cool
THE MOUTH, MARCH 24TH, 2015 –– Madonna has been on a tear lately saying she was “shocked” after learning that 'Living For Love' would not be played on the BBC's Radio 1. Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper sees it a different way. He tells The Telegraph: “I love Madonna. I’ve been to see her concerts several times, and I’ve bought several of her records. I’ve even got a signed front cover of The Face magazine that she was on, on my wall," said Cooper. “There’s nothing personal about Madonna. It’s just about the merit of the music an artist is creating at the time. We haven’t banned Madonna .. but with this current record – when it’s a choice between that and, say, Wolf Alice [a 20-something British band] or a new up-and-coming artist, you go, ‘Which is more relevant to a young audience?," he added. In an effort to better understand its audience, Radio 1 is setting up a ‘youth council’ to tell it what is cool. Madonna, now 56, has endeavored to stay relevant over the years “They will meet four times a year, they will review the previous quarter’s output, and they will also tell us about what’s happening in youth culture – whether that be about Nike or Nando’s,” Mr Cooper said. The group of a dozen 16-24-year-olds “will give us insights into how we should be distributing our content, what content we should be doing, and what issues are relevant to young people today."

Top British Host Defends Decision To Keep Madonna Off Playlist
THE MOUTH, MARCH 23RD, 2015 –– One of BBC Radio 1's most popular host, Scott Mills, has backed the station's decision to not play Madonna's new single 'Living For Love.' According to nme.com, Radio 1 have consistently denied refusing to playlist artists on the grounds of age, but Madonna has said the decision not to give airtime to the song is "discriminatory." Mills, has stepped in to defend the move and explained that Madonna does not appeal to the younger listeners that the station is trying to attract. Speaking to The Mirror, Mills said: "'I don't actually mind the new single. But do I think Radio 1 should play it? Probably not." Explaining his reasoning, Mills said that the age of Madonna fans - as opposed to the singer herself - were behind the decision: "They're trying to get the average age of the listener down and, to be honest, most Madonna fans are in their 30s and 40s. When you’ve got more relevant up-and-coming artists and bands and there’s a space on the playlist, then it’s in the BBC Radio 1 remit that it should go to a British artist anyway." Mills response comes after Radio 1 issued its own reply to Madonna's ageism claims. The station recently said that they "do not ever ban artists" and that "Tracks are chosen on musical merit and relevance to our young audience. An artist’s age is never a factor." Madonna will play London on December 1st.

[WATCH] FEMA Head Makes Case For FM Chips In Cellphones
THE MOUTH, MARCH 20TH, 2015 –– At a Congressional hearing this week, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler seemed to suggest that broadcasters are seeking a government mandate. The NAB's Dennis Wharton responded saying that broadcasters are NOT seeking a government mandate; we merely seek the FCC's help in using its influence in enabling a technology that can save lives in emergency situations. He added feedback from Craig Fugate, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Association, who strongly backs the idea of activated FM chips in cellphones. Fugate notes that cellphones often become "a brick" in a lifeline situation because of capacity constraints and the inferior one-to-one transmission architecture of cellphone networks. Referencing the Washington, DC earthquake and Hurricane Sandy a few years ago, Fugate note that "When cellphone systems went down or data was overloaded, you just couldn't get information." By contrast, Fugate noted that local radio's "one-to-everyone" transmission architecture remains reliable in emergency situations. Having activated radio chips in a cellphones can be a critical lifeline source. "It would be another way to ensure that when all else fails, you get information from the broadcasters. … The most important information is going to come from your local broadcasters" Fugate noted. Mel Greig Returns To Radio For First Time In Over Two Years Since Royal Prank
"I feel quite sick to be perfectly honest … this is quite overwhelming"
THE MOUTH, MARCH 20TH, 2015 –– Hard to believe it's been over two years since the infamous royal prank. Surprisingly, Mel Greig (L), one half of the 2Day FM show responsible for the prank, hasn't stepped foot in a radio studio until this week when she returned to a studio mic at BBC Radio 2. According to news.com.au, she said of her return, “I feel quite sick to be perfectly honest … this is quite overwhelming,” Ms Greig told BBC2 Radio listeners in the UK. During the interview Greig was forced to listen back to part of the original broadcast and then took calls from listeners most of which were sympathetic although one said it was “disgraceful” the BBC should give her airtime to defend herself. She said she did try to alter the hoax call and dub over the nurses voices and it was never her idea to do the prank in the first place but she felt disgust with herself when she heard the nurse had taken her life. Asked whether 2 Day FM, owned by Southern Cross Austereo, protected her or “hung you out to dry” after the incident to she paused then retorted “well I mean what do you think? ... They were really concerned for my safety and my well being which was good, providing a psychologist straight away straight away, I mean we were in lock down for three months and I had constant security guards, bodyguards, we had bullets sent to police stations with our names on it we had so many active death threats,” she said before she recounted verbatim some of the death threat messages she had received from people in Britain.

Big Boy Seals $10.5 Million Deal With iHeart Media Amid Legal Tussle
THE MOUTH, MARCH 18TH, 2015 –– Amid an ongoing lawsuit, Big Boy, host of “Big Boy’s Neighborhood” has just officially inked with iHeart' Real 92.3 Los Angeles (KRRL) for a reported 3-year, $10.5 million deal it was announced Tuesday. According to legal documents obtained by The Wrap, his three-year contract provides an annual salary of $3.5 million, plus an additional $200,000 video production budget, four weeks of vacation and the use of a private jet for domestic travel (including Hawaii) iHeartMedia, has also committed to spending a minimum of $1 million a year to promote Big Boy’s show and will make him a featured presenter at national tent-pole events. After joining Real 92.3 on Mar. 9th, the deal wasn't officially closed until a Los Angeles Superior Court lifted a temporary restraining order filed by his previous employer Emmis that would have prevented him from commencing with the new show. Following the ruling, Emmis issued a statement saying, “While Emmis is disappointed with the Court’s ruling and will evaluate our legal options, we are pleased with the Court’s indication that damages are an available remedy at trial. Emmis remains resolute in continuing to protect our legal rights and committed to the continued success of Power 106.”
Emmis Radio LLC, filed a lawsuit against Big Boy, whose real name is Kurt Alexander, alleging he breached his contract, which ended on Feb. 28, 2015. According to legal documents, Alexander, informed Emmis in January 2015 that he had received a more lucrative offer from iHeartMedia. His contract allowed for a 60-day window at the end of his deal to entertain other offers, as long as Emmis was allowed to match the offer. Emmis said it countered Big Boy’s proposed new agreement with a substantially similar deal, but “Alexander announced that he would not honor the terms of the agreement;” thus, claiming a “brazen breach” of his contract, the lawsuit stated. Since Big Boy' departure from Power 106, J Cruz has shifted from nights into mornings.

CONDOLENCES: Longtime New York Host Ron Bee Has Passed Away
THE MOUTH, MARCH 18TH, 2015 –– We were saddened to learn this morning that longtime New York radio personality Ron Bee died early Wednesday morning, according to Rich Lauber at B104.7 FM. Lauber, regional programming manager for iHeartMedia, posted the following message on the station's Facebook page: "I just spoke to Ron Bee's wife Tina. I am very sad to report that former B104.7 personality Ron Bee passed away a few minutes ago after a long illness. She asked that we let his listeners know. We will miss our friend. Please keep the family in your prayers. According to syracuse.com, Bee spent nearly 35 years on the Central New York radio waves. Early in his career, he made a name as part of the "Rick & Ron" duo on WOLF 1490 AM. Most recently, he enjoyed a long run as a morning host on B104.7 FM with Becky Palmer. Bee was forced into retirement in 2007 after a car accident and resulting surgery permanently damaged his vocal cords. He moved to Phoenix, Ariz. with his family. Last spring, Bee was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. He attributed the sickness to his exposure to Agent Orange while serving in the Vietnam War. He opted for a stem cell transplant -- a complicated procedure, but one that could have given him several more years. Bee went to Seattle, Wash., earlier this year to undergo the procedure. He said last September that one in three patients who undergo the surgery don't make it out of the hospital. The transplant was unsuccessful. Bee is survived by his wife, Tina, and his son, Jonathan.

[LISTEN] DC's 106.7 The Fan Mocks Failed 'Man Cave' Launch
Did Redskin's Newspaper Diss Put The Kibosh On 'The Man Cave' Launch?
THE MOUTH, MARCH 17TH, 2015 –– Lots of theories floatinf out there as to why ESPN 980/Wash. DC decided to pull the plug on its highly-promoted launch on Monday of 'The Man Cave.' According to The Washington Post, Jason Reid (R) said goodbye to his Washington Post colleagues on Wednesday and was headed to his new morning gig on ESPN 980 (WTEM-AM). But he never arrived. Late last week, station managers said its new program, “The Man Cave,” wasn’t airing as scheduled despite nearly a month of promotion. Meanwhile it was reported that WTEM's PD, Chuck Sapienza, resigned from the station on Monday, apparently over the show’s demise. ESPN 980 is the flagship station of Red Zebra Broadcasting which is controlled by Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. The team's Pres./GM is Bruce Allen. Late last week, unidentified Redskins executives ordered the station to cancel the debut of “The Man Cave,” as reported by people who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, 106.7 The Fan is having a field-day with the news by posting its own “uncensored” coverage with three pre-recorded spots on Monday morning. They aired on both “The Sports Junkies” and “Grant & Danny” shows. Scripts included “Unbiased, unfiltered, uncensored. And still, D.C.’s only local sports show every weekday morning. Start your day with the Sports Junkies on sports radio, 106.7 The Fan.” “No man caves, no mandates, and no Mr. Snyder signing the checks. Just D.C. sports talk all day. Another said: “Somewhere deep inside his man cave in Potomac, a diminutive billionaire tunes his trusty AM radio to 980 to listen to his favorite sports radio station. The station where he signs the checks and calls the shots. But meddle as he may, Mr. Snyder cannot control the sports discussion in Washington. For there is a station on crystal-clear FM, where fans of all genders and ages can talk freely about the Redskins. Where the Nationals, Wizards and Capitals actually exist. And you found that station. Unbiased, unfiltered, uncensored, sports radio 106.7 The Fan.” READ MORE AND LISTEN TO PROMOS HERE

While every expert agrees, nobody has defined exactly what works-and what doesn’t. Until now. In the perfect marriage of science and art, Strategic Radio Solutions and Tracy Johnson Media Group have teamed up to show MSBC attendees exactly what drives listener behavior. Drawing on hundreds of research projects with thousands of radio listeners (the science), Strategic has compiled millions of data points that measure listener’s reaction to air talent in real time. Among highlights: * Talk And Music Get In A fight. Who Wins? And Why? * The 3 Things That Drive Listeners Nuts. * Personal Stories About Your Lives? Who Cares? You’ll Be Surprised. * Length: Does it Matter? * Live and Local. Fact or Myth? * 3 Things to EXCLUDE From Entertainment Reports * When Does Listener ADD Kick In? In this session, Tracy Johnson (TJMG) and Hal Rood & Kevin Cassidy (Strategic) answer these questions and more with facts supported by research and actionable next steps for your show. And, they unveil a formula that shows exactly how you perform against the song you could be playing. COMING AUG. 6/7 TO MSBC CHICAGO - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER
