"I think as a one-time GRAMMY nominee, I am the best person to provide a shoulder to all the amazing artists who do not win on the night because I too know the pain of not winning the award! BLOG: Air Talent Should Bring Emotion And Energy To Promos To Mimic On-Site Experiences

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 24TH, 2020 –– Before the pandemic, remote broadcasts and appearances were staples of the AM/FM radio industry. This week’s Westwood One blog looks at how social distancing measures and shelter-in-place mandates have paused this type of station remote but offers solutions for how a virtual event could deliver similar results.

The media plan for a station event is the engine of impact: An example weekly campaign has twenty ads, twenty promos, and eight live reports. They promote the station’s presence at the store, give listeners the important details, and, most importantly for advertisers, give consumers the necessary call to action. The media plan: Average remote broadcast schedules have massive audience reach and generate significant frequency:

According to Nielsen, a typical AM/FM radio buy of twelve weekly commercials reaches 43% of a stations’ 25-54 audience an average of 1.7 times. The average remote broadcast schedule includes significantly more ads, promos, and live reports – forty-eight announcements in all. It generates a massive reach of 76% of a station’s audience with exposure to the campaign an average of 4.1 times.

While in-person remotes can rely on the onsite excitement of call-ins, virtual remotes need to develop that atmosphere. For example: The message: On-air talent should bring emotion and energy to promos to mimic onsite experiences. The media: Align to the consumer purchase mindset by knowing key buying windows or times when consumers might be in their cars. The tools: Use music or a sonic logo to add interest and capture attention. Creative, however, cannot stand alone. According to Nielsen, of the 3 media elements of targeting, recency, and reach, reach is by far the most significant media sales driver. SEE ENTIRE BLOG HERE

Bruce St. James Succeeds Mancow In Mornings At WLS

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 23RD, 2020 –– Chicago's Robert Feder reported on Friday that Bruce St. James Bruce who's aired for the last ten years on Phoenix's KTAR has been tapped to replace Erich Mancow Muller in mornings at WLS 890-AM. St. James will begin on December 14, according to Marv Nyren, vice president and market manager of Cumulus Media Chicago. Muller’s last day on WLS will be Wednesday. Fill-in hosts will substitute in the coming weeks.

“Bruce St. James is here to have a conversation, not a lecture. He is not here to change formats,” WLS program director Stephanie Tichenor told staffers in an email today. “He is here to continue what 890 already does best – inform and entertain our listeners.” St. James had been one of three top candidates for the job, according to Nyren, who said all of the finalists were from outside of the market.

St. James previous stops included stations Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix, including KTAR, where he hosted middays for 10 years until last February. He previously spent 13 years as program director of KKFR in Phoenix. Muller announced last week that he was not renewing his contract after two years at WLS. Mancow said at the time, “Much of the enjoyment I had left doing radio has been sucked out of it,” he told Feder. “For me, no interaction has been the radio kiss of death. Talking during this political season and hearing endless tales of woe from my listeners has been radio without joy.”

FRED JACOBS: Top Ways Your Radio Station Can 'Ease The Pain' This Holiday Season

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 23RD, 2020 –– During a time of 'extraordinarily bad', Jacobs Media's Fred Jacobs writes in his latest blog, that despite this years woes, there are things local radio stations can do to ease the pain, and more importantly, bring joy into the lives of listeners. "These holidays will indeed have a very different feel than any other season we've experienced in our entire lives," says Jacobs. Among the things that stations can do to make a difference include the following:

–– What are they missing most? This one's not rocket science. Many music fans will tell you they miss going to concerts and shows. Your station can't fix things, but it can help fill in the blanks. A concert weekend or even one of those “faux festivals” we've talked about these past several months is one tactic. And depending on your contacts, you might be able to arrange for an artist to do a Zoom “meet & greet” with your audience.

–– Talk to them. Better yet, listen to them. You're going to be broadcasting to many dispirited people, and more than a few who will be alone for much of the holidays. Venting on social media only gets you so far. This is when radio's role as a companion comes into play. Those studio lines may be more important than ever. Your emotional intelligence is more important than ever. Give our the phone number, welcome calls, and play back short segments that reflect the emotion of the moment. Your audience won't get this kind of “eye contact” on Spotify, SiriusXM, their favorite podcasts, or anywhere else.

–– Help hometown businesses. These types of initiative got off to a great start during the early weeks of the lockdown, but most have languished over the months. Initially, many radio stations were especially supportive of local restaurants, concert venues, and other businesses in need. Nothing's changed. In fact for many local enterprises, the hurt is more acute with another round of PPP assistance nowhere in sight. The third wave of our COVID study conducted last month showed a strong intention to support local businesses this year. This coming weekend, it's American Express' “Small Business Saturday.” Their slogan? “Share Joy – Shop Small.”

–– Find the joy. Don't forget about your team. They've been through a lot this year. And the on-air folks are tasked with the burden of putting a happy face on a challenging situation, especially this time of year. Just like everyone else, many of them are personally or professionally going through trying times when the mic's not on. They've served the industry especially well these past many months. And they deserve a holiday celebration and a break as well. This season has sadly become even more stressful for many in radio, thanks in no small part to layoffs and staff reductions that now coincide with these emotional holidays. Read entire blog HERE

I will miss working with him every day, but I am also happy for him to get to spend more time with his family and to finally get to sleep in every morning!”

Stutts said, “When I first came to Chapel Hill in 1977 I had no idea I would still be here in 2020 hosting the morning show! It’s been a blast and an honor to wake up this community every weekday morning. I hope everyone knows that I have put my heart and soul into this job. Lately, during this pandemic, I’ve been very careful like so many others, and even did the morning show from my kitchen for a couple of months. This just seems like a good time to retire. Look, I’m 71 years old now, and 43 years is probably long enough doing this gig. The radio station has been here for 67 years, and I realized I’ve been a part of it 2/3 of that time! As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end."

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 18TH, 2020 –– Erich 'Mancow' Muller announced he's leaving WLS 890-AM after two years as morning host. His last day on the Cumulus outlet will be November 25 reports Robert Feder. “Much of the enjoyment I had left doing radio has been sucked out of it,” Mulle said Monday. “Alone in an office building with no guests and endless rules is not my idea of a creative process. . . . Neither side had initiated negotiations on a renewal. WLS 890 AM “Mancow has done everything we asked him to do,” said Nyren, noting their warm and cordial relationship this time around. “It’s been a gem for two years.”

November 30, a number of fill-in hosts will be used until a permanent replacement is hired. Nyren said he and program director Stephanie Tichenor have narrowed the field to three, with a decision expected by January 1 or sooner.

Muller has been part of the Chicago radio scene for 26 years after arriving from San Francisco to host mornings on the former WRCX. Other stints included Q101, WLS, The Loop and Talk Radio Network. MUSIC: Scooter Braun Sells Taylor Swift’s Big Machine Master Rights

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 17TH, 2020 –– Scooter Braun’s (inset) Ithaca Holdings LLC has acquired Big Machine Label Group and all of its recorded music assets, sources tell Variety. Reportedly, he sold the master rights to Taylor Swift’s first six albums. The buyer, yet unknown, involves a deal believed to be north of $300 million and closed in the last two weeks. Some insiders speculate the value could be as high as $450 million once certain earn-backs are factored in. Ithaca purchased the Nashville-based independent record label Big Machine, founded by Scott Borchetta in 2005, in June 2019 for just over $300 million, of which Swift’s catalog — from her 2006 self-titled debut to 2017’s “Reputation” — was believed to be worth some $140 million.

Swift tweeted late Monday that she had been trying to actively regain control of her master recordings for the last year following the report in Variety that Braun had sold the assets for $300 million. But despite attempting to negotiate with Braun, she said her team had “received a letter from a private equity company called Shamrock Holdings” announcing they had purchased her music, videos and album art. “This was the second time my music has been sold without my knowledge,” she wrote, adding that she had begun re-recording her earlier songs." Variety has reached out to reps for Swift and Braun for comment.

THE MOUTH, NOVEMBER 5TH, 2020 –– As a followup to yesterday's report of the scheduled demolition of former WMAL 630's towers in Bethesda, WTOP was on the scene for their undoing. Wednesday, the four orange and white steel towers that carried the station’s middle-of-the-road programming to waiting ears in the 1960s and 1970s were demolished, in 23 seconds. The towers, in Bethesda, Maryland, were brought down in a carefully-orchestrated series of explosions, to make way for 309 new homes that will be built in a Toll Brothers subdivision. With neighbors and former neighbors watching from a safe distance, explosives set by Maryland-based Controlled Demolition Inc., one explosive knocked out three legs of each tower, while TNT pushed the towers to fall in the right direction, toward the middle of the large field.
