Listeners More Likely To Purchase A Product After A Personality Discusses It On Air Reveals CRS 2016 Research Presentation:
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 10TH, 2016 –– Edison’s Larry Rosin and Megan Lazovick presented “Ear Wars: The Listeners Speak Back” at during yesterday's 2016 Country Radio Seminar in Nashville. This year’s research study combined a 1,560 respondent online survey with listener and radio station interviews in three markets: Terre Haute, IN, Knoxville, TN, and Philadelphia, PA.
With increasing competition from other forms of audio, this presentation urged broadcasters to instill “FOMO” at every opportunity in the broadcast day – if you’re not listening to the radio, you’re missing out. Survey data and interviews with listeners show that connection, engagement, and community involvement are all important ways for radio stations to create reasons to keep listening. We also visited top radio stations WIVK, WTHI, and WXTU to illustrate just a few of the methods stations can employ to meaningfully engage with listeners. In fact, they showed that four out of ten country listeners said they are more inclined to pay attention to commercials featuring station personalities. Nearly half of country listeners (46%) said they are more likely to purchase a product or service after a personality discussed it on the air. This compared to only 4% who were less likely. For a full presentation deck, including graphs, relevant data points, and videos is available through Custom Show at: https://app.customshow.com/slideshow/8dre9h

MIW Gender Analysis Study Shows Greatest Challenge For Women In Radio Mgt. Continues To Be As Programmers
Women currently only program 10.9% of all stations in the country, which compares to 10.7% nine years ago.
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2016 –– According to the latest MIW Gender Analysis Study released by the Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio Group (MIW’s) out of 11,201 AM and FM radio stations, accounted for by MStreet Publications as of December 31, 2015, 1878 or 17.3% have women holding the GM position in 2015. This is a one-tenth percentage point drop from 2014, which was 17.4%, but does continue to show growth from 2004, eleven years ago when the percentage was only 14.9%. The annual study is compiled, analyzed and released by the MIW’s from information provided by *MStreet Publications.
In the top 100 markets, the number of women GM’s is just barely ahead of the national average. In 2015 16.3% of stations in these markets were managed by women, which compares to 16.2% in 2014. Overall the best management opportunities for women continue to be in sales management although there has been essentially only a minor change for the last eleven years. In 2015, 30.5% of all stations have a women sales manager, which is just slightly up from last year. And in the top 100 markets just under 31% of the stations have women SM’s, which showed a decrease of one and a half percentage points from 2014.
The greatest challenge for women in radio management continues to be as programmers. Women currently only program 10.9% of all stations in the country, which compares to 10.7% nine years ago. The news is a little better in the top 100 markets where women programmers now represent 11.9%, which compares to 12.2% in 2015, but does show a decrease year-over-year. "Tracking the leadership roles of women in media brings awareness to the continued need to reach back and lift up,” comments MIW Spokeswoman Kay Olin (shown). *All information provided by MStreet Publications is subject to the limitations of data provided by radio companies.

At one moment after baby August was out, you didn’t hear him make a noise. Both Spencer and Ricki held their breath but then…it happened. Baby August cried and the room filled with happiness. KJUG's Mike & Lisa Show Stand In Solidarity (And Dresses) Against District Dress Code
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2016 –– The Clovis Unified School District (just northeast of Fresno, CA) is bracing itself for a legal fight with the American Civil Liberties Union, which has taken it to court over the district's dress code. In a surprise vote last week, trustees went against recommendations that would have allowed boys to wear long hair and earrings and removed language that says dresses and skirts are for girls. The decades-old policy directly violates state education code, according to the ACLU. A student petition, urging the board to approve a gender-neutral dress code, had garnered nearly 2,500 signatures by Monday (2/1).
In response, a number of students at Buchanan High School in Clovis flipped the script: the boys wore dresses! Upon hearing the news, Mike Pesto and 'Chad' from Mike & Lisa in The Morning on 106.7, KJUG Country (Visalia, CA) took it upon themselves to stand IN DRESSE in solidarity with their brethren at BHS. Denver Host Shopping New Country/Pop Hybrid Format
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 4TH, 2016 –– Jonathan Wilde, 30 year radio vet announces The COP format—a Country/Pop Hybrid. COP erases the already blurred lines between the 2 biggest formats, Country and HotAC/Top 40. [WATCH] Defense Lawyer Drops Bombshell In Trial Of Canadian Radio Star
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 3RD, 2016 –– It's the trial that has all the makings of an episode from TV's 'Law & Order.' Along with major media coverage, Marie Henein (shown behind radio host Jian Ghomeshi in above photo), defense attorney for Ghomeshi, asked the accuser if, after the alleged assaults, she had anything more to do with Ghomeshi. She said 'no.' Henein remarked that on six occasions she told police detectives she’d had nothing more to do with him. Henein also noted that the woman told the court that when she saw him on TV or heard him on radio, she flipped the off switch. So traumatized was she, the woman said, that she did not even listen to the “new guy” on Q (his station). Henein cautioned her several times. Is there anything you want to tell me? The Star's Kevin Donovan then reports Henein dropped the bombshell:
Henein then presented two emails sent to Ghomeshi after the alleged assault, on containing a photo of her in a bikini. They were shown on a jumbo court screen, the first addressed to “Play>boy” - “Good to see you again!” It invited him to watch her on a music video “when you take a break from ploughing snow naked.” That email was sent Jan. 16, 2004, shortly after 3 a.m. She ends by inviting him to keep in touch. The second, sent June 22, 2004, at 1:46 a.m., says the woman has been watching Ghomeshi on a television show. A photo was attached to the second video. Court saw photo, which is subject to a sealing order pending a media challenge, is a picture of the woman in a bikini on the Toronto islands.
Presented with these emails and the photo. The woman claimed she was baiting Ghomeshi, hoping he would call so she could confront him. He never called, she told court. SEE COMPLETE STORY HERE
Broadcasters Have A Unique Ability To Capitalize On Listener's 'Fear Of Missing Out' Says Edison's Larry Rosin
Lead Finding Of 'Ear Wars' Presentation During CRS/Nashville
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 3RD, 2016 –– With so much competition from other forms of audio, radio’s top competitive advantage is its urgency. Broadcasters have a unique ability to capitalize on their listeners’ “fear of missing out.” That’s the lead finding of “Ear Wars,” Edison Research’s 2016 Country radio research presentation, set to be unveiled Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. at Country Radio Seminar in Nashville by Edison’s Larry Rosin and Megan Lazovick.
The survey answers key questions for broadcasters in 2016 such as “why radio” and “what matters”? Continuing Edison’s tradition of presenting major surveys for country radio at CRS, the researchers surveyed more than 1,500 listeners and conducted one-on-one interviews of listeners and broadcasters in three markets. Legendary stations whose listeners and staffers are spotlighted in this year’s presentation are WXTU Philadelphia, WIVK Knoxville, and WTHI (Hi 99) Terre Haute, Ind. “This presentation will walk programmers through every element of their programming day with an eye toward instilling ‘Fear of Missing Out’ into everything they do, from music to air talent content to other engagement, community involvement, and even your marketing,” says Edison President Larry Rosin. “Without a doubt, our 2016 presentation will be the one most loaded with things that broadcasters can take back to their market,” says Rosin. “Programmers should make sure they don’t miss out as well.”

WCSX Hosts Wants Street Renamed After The Late Glenn Frey
THE MOUTH, JANUARY 28TH, 2016 –– Jim O'Brien, co-host of The Trudi & Jim Morning Show on 94.7 WCSX Detroit, tells Jockline, "Glenn Frey graduated from Dondero High School in Royal Oak, and never let go of his love for Detroit. A lot of people don't realize how close he was to going on the road with Bob Seger back in the '60s (but his mom caught him smoking a joint and wouldn't let him go). This seemed like a no-brainer, so I reached out to the city of Royal Oak and they found a stretch of road (on Willis Dr.) that could be renamed Glenn Frey Drive. Now we need to make sure they know how important this is to Detroit (and the music world in general)."
This started the launch of helping to make Glenn Frey Drive a reality! It'll go up for a vote with the board on Thursday, Feb. 11th and WCSX wants to make sure it passes by showing them support from all over Detroit (and beyond). Check it out at #GlennFreyDrive 1

Scarborough finally said he would do just about anything to get the White House back," which led Hewitt to interpret as a "yes." "No, it's not a yes," Scarborough replied. THE MOUTH, JANUARY 27TH, 2016 –– GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump talked to Michael Savage yesterday on The Savage Nation, just before Trump boarded a plane for Iowa for Monday's Iowa Caucuses. Trump said he would not appear on Thursday night's FOX News Channel GOP debate after speaking to Savage, when Savage told him on-air he hoped he wouldn't appear. The news follows Trump repeated objection to the participation of Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly as one of its three moderators, claiming she has treated him unfairly. He was also critical of Fox's press release issued earlier, which he said was 'belittling him was inappropriately antagonistic and childish.' LISTEN HERE
Joining last night's Mark Levin Show, Ted Cruz told Mark Levin that he is challenging Donald Trump to a one-on-one debate. He suggested that the debate be held on talk radio, and that it be a "Megyn Kelly-free zone". The challenge comes after Trump said he would not participate in the Fox News debate on Thursday January 28, 2016. Cruz told Levin, "The fact that Donald is now afraid to appear on the debate stage. That he doesn't want his record questioned. I think that reflects a lack of respect for the men and women of Iowa." Cruz said if Trump is afraid of Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, or Megyn Kelly hosting a debate that he is willing to do an hour long head-to-head debate with no moderator. LISTEN HERE

CHRISTMAS: 'Kind Of A Big Deal' For Radio In 2015
Adele’s record-setting 25 A Likely Factor That Helped Push AC Into The Record Books At Year-End
THE MOUTH, JANUARY 27TH, 2016 –– The recent release of Nielsen’s holiday ratings data has some formats basking in the afterglow of a particularly generous holiday listening season. With each passing year, the buildup to and payoff from switching to an “all-Christmas” format continues to pay dividends. In 2015, 528 radio stations nationwide adopted a holiday programming format, which was just one station shy of 2014’s record of 529 stations. Either way you slice it, “all-Christmas” radio is a big deal on the airwaves, and the holiday book results prove that out.
After showing signs of growth in the December ratings, which covered Nov. 5, 2015, through Dec. 2, 2015, Adult Contemporary (AC) shot to new heights in the holiday book, posting new records in several demographics and finishing as the top-ranked format nationwide. This is the second year in a row that AC has increased its share of listening during the holiday survey; what’s more, among Millennial audiences (aged 18-34), the year-over-year results jumped by more than a full share point between 2014 and 2015. It also bears mentioning that the release of Adele’s record-setting 25 is another likely factor that helped push AC into the record books to close the year.
