REPORT: Google Considering Ranking Search Results On Accuracy
THE MOUTH, MARCH 3RD, 2015 –– If you are among the many who've occasionally been burned after picking up a bizarre story off the internet that later proved inaccurate, or even a hoax, there may be good news on the way. According to Gossip Cop, a site who takes pride in separating fact from fiction, are now reporting that Google which controls an incredible amount of Web traffic, is reportedly considering a new approach to ranking search results based on an outlet’s adherence to the facts rather than the number of inbound links it gets. Google currently operates in a way that often rewards “unique” content, regardless of whether that content is valid or accurate. It’s one of the reasons something like a phony death hoax (or stories like Emma Watson dating Prince Harry) can spread so quickly. Under the current rules, an outlet that makes up a crazy or sensational story is rewarded on Google when other outlets race to link to it. This is partly what’s made sites that basically make up news stories so successful. Google researchers have presented a new report outlining potential new tweaks to the company’s search algorithm that could help put an end to viral hoaxes by using a “Knowledge-Based Trust” Score to measure how trustworthy an outlet is before ranking search results. The potential changes would theoretically reward sites with a track record of accurate reporting (like Gossip Cop) instead of sites that sometimes publish whatever they want without consequences. Gossip Cop adds, whether these changes are actually implemented remains to be seen, but they are hopeful that Google and other search engines do indeed pursue an approach that benefits the outlets doing their best to get things right.

Study Reveals Continued Dominance Of AM/FM In Cars
Over 9 In 10 Want How They Operate Their Car Radio to Remain Unchanged
THE MOUTH, MARCH 2ND, 2015 –– A research study conducted by Ipsos Research makes it clear that AM/FM radio remains the overwhelmingly preferred audio entertainment option in the car. While consumers use new streaming services, virtually all consumers 99% -- are comfortable with the current AM/FM in-car radio operation. And 91% of consumers say they prefer physical AM/FM radio buttons and controls built into the car dashboard, rather than AM/FM being an app that appears in the car's electronic interface (with only 9% saying they would want it changed into a dashboard app).
An additional eye-opening finding was that while AM/FM radio remains paramount in the car, consumers use their in-car CD player three and a half times as much as they use any digital music service. The survey also detailed other facts highlighting the unparalleled importance to consumers of AM/FM radio in the car; the demand for digital services is increasing, but they are still behind AM/FM radio, the CD player and satellite radio:
AM/FM radio still dominates in-car listening as the top platform used, with 84% of consumers using it in the car, followed by CD players at 64% -- but radio still maintains a huge leadership position over the next closest service choice, Sirius/XM which had 22%. Pandora was 18%; iHeartRadio was 8%; HD Radio 7%; and Spotify was 7%. · 80% of consumers chose AM/FM car radio as the top option for their car's entertainment system, followed by the CD player at 68%, satellite radio at 45%, and a streaming music service at 34%. The study, conducted by Ipsos for iHeartMedia in January 2015, surveyed a nationally representative sample of 1036 adults 18+. 1

Former Cincinnati Host Found Guilty On Lesser Charges
THE MOUTH, MARCH 2ND, 2015 –– Blake Seylhouwer, a former host of 'Compact mall Business' on WKRC/Cincinnati, was found guilty on two counts of negligent assault. According to WCPO-TV, the jury in the case produced its guilty verdict Friday, according to court documents, and was hung on the remaining count of domestic violence count. Seylhouwer had taken the stand in his personal defense who police say shot his wife in August. At the time, Seylhouwer called 911 and told dispatchers he accidentally shot his wife, 28-year-old Misty Seylhouwer. But police concluded that he took out a rifle from his vehicle and either 'pointed it at his wife to scare her or fired it at her when she turned her back to stroll away.' A report showed that the bullet Seylhouwer fired went into the driveway, blowing out a half-dollar size chunk out of concrete. Shrapnel from the bullet and pieces of concrete hit Misty Seylhouwer in the leg, side and head (shown left). In addition to negligent assault, he also faced a charge of domestic violence for the shooting, but that count was declared a mistrial after the jury of nine women and three men couldn't make a unanimous decision. While on the stand, Seylhouwer said “My finger must have hit the trigger. I didn't – I didn't mean to." Patrick Mulligan asked the judge for Blake to be released immediately for time served. Blake has been locked up since Aug. 28, and may be set free if he posts his original bond. Misty left the courthouse shaking and in tears before the verdict was read. She posted several updates to her Facebook page Friday: "I'm going to have a heart attack." "I appreciate the love and support and the sorrow. Today was truly tragic ... I'm beyond devastated. Westwood One Takes Brandmeier National; Kass and Cohn Exit 89WLS; Lauren Cohn To Audition For Mornings, Says Source
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 27TH, 2015 –– Westwood One announced it has signed a partnership and syndication deal with popular Chicago radio personality Jonathon “Johnny B” Brandmeier that will bring his brand of talk radio back to Chicago and to listeners nationwide in March. The Jonathon Brandmeier Show will air live weekdays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm ET on stations around the country, including WLS-AM Chicago, KABC-AM Los Angeles, KLIF-AM Dallas, KKAT-AM, Salt Lake City, WPRV-AM Providence, KTBL-AM Albuquerque, and many more. John Dickey, Executive Vice President of Content and Programming for Cumulus, said “Jonathon is one of the most versatile performers in radio today, and we know audiences will enjoy his lively humor and take on each day’s topics. His radio career began at age 15 in his hometown of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and before long his on air antics in Milwaukee created a buzz when a national radio talent search named Brandmeier one of the Top 5 Talents in the country alongside Howard Stern. From there Brandmeier went to mornings at KZZP in Phoenix. After quickly becoming a force in the Phoenix radio market, Brandmeier took over morning drive at WLUP/The Loop in Chicago and then dominated Chicago radio for several years until making a move to Afternoon Drive in Los Angeles. In 1998, CBS Radio simulcast Brandmeier in Chicago and Los Angeles. In 2005, Brandmeier returned to Chicago to host mornings on The Loop and, most recently, on WGN-AM.
With the move, marks the end WWO's Dennis Miller Show. “I’m stepping aside from radio at the moment,” Miller said. “It’s been a great run and I’ve had a phenomenal time interacting with my guests and audience. But with so many other commitments right now, it’s hard to maintain a daily talk show ... I wish Johnny B lots of luck.”
Meanwhile, with Brandmeier's move, Chicago blogger Robert Feder reports that Lauren Cohn, half of the midday show with John Kass of Kass And Cohn on WLS which was canceled on Thursday, could be shifting to a new role at WLS AM 890 as a contributor to Big John Howell’s morning show. Feder says sources say Cohn was given the option of trying out for a spot with Howell. Howell, joined WLS in January after nine years at Salem WIND AM 560. At WIND he was teamed with Amy Jacobson.
LARRY ROSIN: Radio Has A Hardware Problem?
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 27TH, 2015 ––According to a special study commissioned by CRS which looked at country listener's wake-up routines, Edison Media Research chief Larry Rosin says radio has a hardware problem. Using video, slides and on-the-street interviews to make their case, Edison's Megan Lazovick revealed results from a survey of 1,540 online respondents showing that most listeners awake by 6:30 am, but then spend an average of 30 minutes in bed, 50% checking their mobile devices from which 40% is spent checking social media. TV came next, with 17%. Only 36% of those who described themselves as frequent country listeners have a radio in their bedroom, compared to 59% who have a TV. Rosin said the technology used in respondents’ bedrooms clearly indicated that radio has a “hardware problem.” The study tracked respondents’ activities throughout the morning. Choosing from a list of over 60 items, the average respondent said he/she did one-third of the activities listed between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Respondent data indicated the peak hour for respondents in the car to be between 7-8 a.m. Rosin suggested programmers might consider adjusting the morning clock. “People are in their cars, yet we do these staccato breaks. We are talking to people at the one place they have the most access to the station-changing button and we create radio that is designed for tuneouts. Then they get to work and go into at-work modality where they are less likely to tune out and we create ‘no tuneout’ clocks.” 'News' topped the list at 88%. SEE MORE RESULTS HERE

By Graham Mack
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 27TH, 2015 –– According to E Online, while discussing his mentors, the late fashion professor Louise Wilson, Kanye said, "Last time I saw her," West recalled, taking a deep breath, "we had dinner at my favorite restaurant in London. And I think she knew that she was going to pass, and she just wanted to give me some words of advice moving forward, and she was asking me about my daughter, asked me about my wife...and she said, you know, 'So many students, they don't give it their all, and the problem is, soon as they do anything halfway good when they're 2 years old, 3 years old, their parents clap.'" At about this point trying to soften the emotion, Zane Lowe promptly started clapping. Kanye smiled. "Exactly," the rapper agreed. WATCH HERE
The Green Party leader Natalie Bennett has given her second car crash interview in as many hours on LBC Radio, with listeners describing the performance as “a complete meltdown”, “extraordinarily bad” and “awkward beyond words”. After telling host Nick Ferrari that the Greens would build 500,000 new social rent homes, Ms Bennett appeared to be stumped by his response: “Good lord, where would you get the money for that?” Despite saying the policy was “fully costed”, she struggled to explain how much money the homes would cost or where the money would come from beyond an unspecified amount from “mortgage relief from private landlords”. One Twitter user described it as “the worst party leader interview ever given”. Listen HERE

94WIP Philadelphia Holds 'Great Birds Debate'
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 26TH, 2015 –– SportsRadio 94WIP will hold the Great Birds Debate today, February 26th beginning at 12pm. This is one of the few times all year that the WIP airstaff is on the same stage together. In his first season as Eagles Head Coach, Chip Kelly turned around a 4-12 Eagles team to 10-6 and a playoff berth. This season the Birds again finished 10-6 but failed to make the playoffs. What do the Birds need to do get back to the playoffs and bring Philadelphia its first Lombardi trophy? Will the team stick with Nick Foles at QB or make the moves to go for Marcus Mariota? What will the team do to improve its beleaguered secondary? These are just some of the topics sure to generate heat during the 8th Annual Great Birds Debate. For the first time ever, WIP’s Angelo Cataldi will moderate the Great Birds Debate. Rob Charry and Ray Didinger will host the Debate pre game show from 10-12:00pm and the postgame show from 1:30-2PM. The format will be a presidential debate style. Each participant will be at a podium, make opening and closing statements and answer questions from the moderator and the audience. Each host will have a challenge flag that can be thrown once during the debate. Challenge flags have been known to cause fireworks between debaters and have become a favorite part of the event.

REPORT: CBS Urged By Hedge Fund Group To Merge Radio Division With Cumulus
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2015 –– According to The Deal Pipeline, Sandell Asset Management Corp. has 'lobbied CBS to spin out the business and merge it with Cumulus Media Inc.' According to a person familiar with the situation, Sandell suggested that the groups pursue a reverse Morris Trust merger of their radio businesses. By spinning off the radio stations to shareholders, CBS would divest an asset with a low tax basis without incurring a large bill from the IRS. Currently, executive Chairman Sumner Redstone controls 79.6% of the shareholder vote. CBS owns 117 radio stations, with more than three-quarters of them in the top 25 U.S. cities. In December, the company strengthened its holdings in Philadelphia and Miami through a station swap with Beasley Broadcast Group Inc. "Lew (Dickey) has always said that would be his ultimate deal," said Macquarie Capital analyst Amy Yong of a combination of Cumulus and CBS's radio stations. CBS and Cumulus declined to comment on speculation.
NAB Introduces Local Radio Freedom Act
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2015 –– The National Association of Broadcasters expressed its strong support for a bipartisan resolution opposing "any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge" on local broadcast radio stations that has been introduced in the U.S. Senate and will be introduced in the House of Representatives later tonight with more than 90 co-sponsors. The Local Radio Freedom Act (LRFA) signals Members of Congress's opposition to any potential legislation that would impose new performance royalties on broadcast radio stations for music airplay. "For decades, local radio airplay has jumpstarted and sustained the careers of countless musicians and record label moguls," said NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith. "Local radio's unparalleled promotional value drives increased record and merchandise sales and sells out concert venues. NAB applauds lawmakers for standing with hometown broadcasters in opposing a job-killing performance royalty that would damage the No. 1 platform for exposing new music." Reps. Michael Conaway (R-TX) and Gene Green (D-TX) are the principal sponsors of the Local Radio Freedom Act in the House of Representatives, which will have bipartisan co-sponsorship from more than 90 Members of Congress. Sens. John Barrasso (R-WY) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) are the principal sponsors of S. Con. Res. 4, the bipartisan resolution in Senate. "Congress should not impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge relating to the public performance of sound recordings on a local radio station for broadcasting sound recordings over-the-air, or on any business for such public performance of sound recordings," reads the Local Radio Freedom Act. Introduction of the LRFA comes as 600 radio and television broadcasters from across the country are visiting Washington for the NAB State Leadership Conference.

[LISTEN] Glenn Beck Draws Tweet From Lady Gaga After Praising Her Oscar Performance
Media Blown Away That He's Blown Away
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 25TH, 2015 –– Like most of us who saw Lady Gaga's amazing Oscar performane, Glenn Beck reviewed Lady Gaga's Oscar performance on his radio show then, surprisingly, Lady Gaga responded with a tweet: "A very humbling review of my Oscar performance … I love this piece of music so much, thank you." Glenn praised the performance and called Gaga a “genius”. “I’ve said this for a long time. This woman is an absolute artist. She is a genius. And at first everybody mocked her. Then she just became such a big pop star, but a lot of people, again, continued to mock her,” Glenn said. “This woman is the way artists should be,” he said. “Somebody told me at one time on radio when I was really, really young. He said, ‘Don’t be a rule breaker until you know all of the rules.’ When you know all of the rules, then you can break all the rules. Because then you can break them with intelligence. You know why you’re doing it. And it makes it more effective. Where too many people are just rebels. I just don’t want to do that. They don’t master the craft,” Glenn said. “You have to master the craft first. And Lady Gaga proved last night, she is a master craftswoman.” Adding to Gaga's special performance, Julie Andrews, star of The Sound of Music, greeted her on stage saying 'It’s hard to believe that 50 years have gone by since that joyous film was released.”
Equally blown away were numerous media outlets, who seemed strangely surprised by his praise. Among them included mediaite.com whose headline: 'Glenn Beck Gushes About Lady Gaga’s Oscar Performance; She Thanks Him — World Explodes!" Writer Andrew Kirell added: 'Here’s a public positive interaction we thought we’d never see: Glenn Beck and Lady Gaga thanking each other. THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 24TH, 2015 –– Looking for a way to take your next prize giveaway from ordinary to extraordinary? Check this out: This one involves a grieving mom named Michelle who recently lost her 19-year-old son Blaine and, according to aplus.com, was struggling to get her life back to normal. As you'll see in the video link, her daughter, Crystal, reached out to Australia's KIIS 106.5's Kyle And Jackie O for help and they decided to pay off six months of Michelle's mortgage. But they also wanted to do it in grand radio fashion. The plan included Crystal taking her mother to the spa and making sure KIIS 1065 was on the radio. While listening to the Kyle and Jackie O, they announced the random recipient of a special "give back" gift, Michelle soon came to realize they were talking about her. Jackie O. literally spoke directly to Michelle through the radio and explained that with the help of Clarendon Homes, the next six months of her mortgage would be paid, and that she'd also receive an additional $5,000 to finish renovations that her son started before he died. Yesterday, the station released the video of the surprise and set up a GoFundMe page in the family's honor. Jockline reached around the world for this story, but it's one that any show in the world can appreciate. Go ahead and grab the tissues. This one is gonna make you tear up. WATCH HERE

CAT'S OUT OF THE BAG: Radio's Laura Cain Is An Oscar Seat Filler
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2015 –– After years of being sworn to secrecy, 2015 Oscar host, Neil Patrick Harris, finally revealed what we never could, that San Diego's Laura Cain, longtime member of CBS' Jeff & Jer' Show is a Oscar seat filler (see photo). On last night's show Harris put the spotlight on the seat fillers in two bits which included the seat fillers, three of them in particular. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his first on called out Laura and Heidi, and his third drew attention to a woman sitting in Octavia Spencer's seat. THR tracked down Laura Cain. As a sidebar, part of Valentine's Day, Jeff and Jer hosted "Laura's Week of Love," where contestants were selected to go on a date with her at a variety of restaurants. Cain gave a quick summary of her dates on her online diary she keeps on the station's website. Of course, none of this would have been possible over the years without the shrewd dealings of mega-producer, Tommy Sablan, who's been snagging at least three seats a year, then taking selfies and more with some of the biggest names in show business. And just to prove Sablan was smack dab in the middle of things again this year, he snapped this quickie with Oprah who, as you can see, looked just THRILLED with the opportunity before calling security (ok, we that part up)

[LISTEN] Louie, Louie Turning 50; How The FBI & DJ Arnie “Woo-Woo” Ginsburg Made It A Legendary Hit
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2015 –– The ginormous 60's hit 'Louie, Louie' will soon turn 50, but the controversy over its supposed lyrics remains one of radio and records greatest tales. In fact, those lyrics and the help of Boston jock Arnie “Woo-Woo” Ginsburg (R) along with an assist from the local FBI, help stamp this tune as one of radio's most legendary songs ever. According to tbo.com, the Tampa FBI office back then managed to find time in February 1964 to spend hours each day listening to a version of the song “Louie Louie” recorded by the Portland, Oregon, band The Kingsmen. Not because they were fans. Rather, they were charged with figuring out whether the lyrics were profane, a violation of federal law at the time. “Looking back, it’s funny,” said Dick Peterson of The Kingsmen. “But the FBI was serious. They wanted to prove the song was dirty and they wanted to punish us for it. Even funnier of course is there was nothing dirty about it.” . For those old enough to remember the actual lines such as, “Three nights and days I sail the sea. Think of girl, all constantly. On that ship I dream she’s there. I smell the rose in her hair.” Well, that ain't even close to what people THOUGHT the lyrics were. In fact, The governor of Indiana prohibited playing it on radio stations in his state. A A teacher in Sarasota wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy asking him for a national ban. “Who do you turn to when your teenage daughter buys and brings home pornographic or obscene material being sold ... in every city, village and record shop in this nation?” the letter wrote. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover had the album sent for evaluation to his Tampa region, which included Sarasota. According to FBI archives, Tampa’s FBI agents tried to figure out what The Kingsmen were singing by slowing the record down. It was still unclear. They even tried playing the song backward. In March 1964, the Tampa FBI office released the statement saying it was ending its investigation because no one had been able to decipher the complete lyrics to “Louie Louie.” READ FULL STORY HERE - “Louie Louie” celebrates its 50th birthday this year. [WATCH] Burst Pipe Leaves Worcester Cluster Under Water
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 20TH, 2015 –– Quite a day yesterday at Cumulus Worcester, MA cluster. Operations Manager Lance Ballance tells Jockline, 'At about 8:40 yesterday morning, Bruce Palmer (inset) was on air when he heard a thundering crash — a commotion loud enough to penetrate his soundproof studio. He told a local paper, "Someone looked outside the studio and saw ankle-deep water running down the hallway. We grabbed what we could and ran out of the building," Palmer said. Ballance said 'We didn't know what had happened until we heard water beginning to drip from the walls and ceiling. We looked out the studio door, and saw the water rushing down the stairwell. We first thought that our rook had collapsed due to the weight of the snow. We immediately began to evacuate the studios, as I ran upstairs to my office and our engineering area, as that seemed to be where the water was coming from...and saw even more water rushing in, as a 6 inch water main had broken in the stairwell. The first concern was for the rack room, but water was heading for the stairs, which spared that room. As water cascaded down the staircase inside, water began pouring from the ceiling into the WXLO studio, which effectively wiped it out. As I was retrieving some of our staff's personal effects (we got out THAT fast), I was met by the fire department, and let them in. We were ordered to cut all power until the electrical could be evaluated. After a time, we were able to continue to use the WWFX (The Pike), and WORC-FM (Nash Icon) studios. In addition to the damage to the WXLO studio, we also lost two production rooms. However, we were able to restore audio to all 3 stations before 1pm. We will have a makeshift studio for WXLO completed by Monday, as we get set to begin rebuilding. It turns out that the cause was that the water main had frozen completely solid, and finally gave way due to the pressure. WATCH VIDEO HERE
[WATCH] Anthony Cumia Calls Howard Stern 'Greatest On-Air Personality” In History; Doesn't Speak With Opie Much Now
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 20TH, 2015 –– Well, we didn't see this one coming. Anthony Cumia, longtime co-host of the Opie And Anthony Show sat down for a chat with Will Cain of The Blaze's Will Cain Show. In speaking about hi current relationship with his former co-host of 20 years, Gregg “Opie” Hughes he said, “We don’t talk much now,” Cumia said. “I think we both needed kind of a break from each other. Twenty years is a long time to spend everyday with somebody.” He also said he once had a lot in common with Hughes because the biggest goal in both of their lives in the beginning of their relationship was to build a wildly successful radio show. But as they got older and achieved success, he said, they “grew into different lives which weren’t that similar.” “He got married, had some kids and stuff and was doing fantastically. And I decided not to do that,” Cumia added. “I like it to be a little off-balance and unpredictable.” But somehow, even through disputes, Cumia said their chemistry inexplicably returned as soon as the microphones went on. In a bit of a shocker, after years of on-air sparring with fellow New York host, Howard Stern, Cumia named Stern as the greatest “on-air personality” in history. “I think you’d be crazy to not say Howard,” Cumia said. “We have butted heads with Howard for 20 years. … You can’t deny that from the mid-80s at NBC, up until he went to Sirius with that giant fanfare that he wasn’t the biggest guy in radio.” WATCH VIDEO HERE
Gregg “Opie” Hughes Upgrades To $6.85 Million Condo At Trump's Place
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 20TH, 2015 –– In case you're wondering how Gregg ‘Opie’ Hughes has been doing since his well publicized split with Anthony Cumia, you can relax. It appears he's doing just fine. According to the realdeawl.com, he has opted to remain in Donald Trump’s 200 Riverside Boulevard and trade up for a nicer condo, The Real Deal learned that Hughes purchased the five-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom apartment on the tower’s 43rd floor for $6.85 million, and will live there with his wife and two children. The 4,285-square-foot unit features sweeping views of the Hudson River from the living room, kitchen and dining areas, according to the listing. Douglas Elliman’s Gilad Azaria represented the seller in the transaction. It is unclear who represented Hughes. SiriusXM fired the “Anthony” half of the famous duo last summer following a series of racially-charged tweets about an alleged incident in which he was punched in Times Square. The firing forced the end of “Opie and Anthony,” which had been a radio mainstay since 1995. Hughes resumed the show with comedian Jim Norton as his new partner.

Former Cleveland PD To Launch oWOW Radio
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 19TH, 2015 –– After two years in the making, legendary WMMS/Cleveland, PD John Gorman is set to launch oWOW radio this Friday, a locally-based live and local internet radio station. He tells freshwatercleveland.com, "We're on the air right now, testing," says the chief content officer. On-air staff members include Ravenna Micelim Steve Pappas (R), Susie Frazier and Charlotte DiFranco (L), all of whom have lengthy radio experience. "What used to get people interested in radio was that it was exciting," says oWOW director of sales and marketing Jim Marchyshyn. "You looked in. You saw the DJ and you thought: this is cool. We are in show business. That's been forgotten." Gorman says of traditional radio today, "Studios are all empty. They don't have an air staff. Most of them are disembodied voices coming from another city. We're real live people. We're based in Cleveland. We can do all the things that radio can no longer do." Two sponsors are already lined up, including Budweiser who will join for the launch this weekend. And if the logo seems familiar, David Helton, who created WMMS's legendary buzzard, was its designer. According to the report, oWOW was funded by a host of private investors, a local bank and a loan and grant from the City of Cleveland. "We had the odds so far against us at one point that it looked like it would never happen," says Gorman. "It made us fight even harder. We refused to give up."
Mark Cuban Says Net Neutrality Will F--k Everything Up
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 19TH, 2015 –– Not one to mince his words, Shark Tank's Mark Cuban is not happy about net neutrality. Speaking at the Code/Media conference on Wednesday, Cuban plans to change how the FCC classifies the internet will "f--- everything up." He said there is little evidence that giant tech companies have ever "throttled" the internet to reduce speeds, so he doesn't see them as a threat. Cuban added, "net neutrality is just a demonization of big companies." According to businessinsider.com, The FCC wants to introduce laws that keep big internet companies from being able to pay internet service providers for priority web traffic. To do that, the FCC is planning to reclassify the internet as a utility. Cuban previously spoke to Business Insider about his concerns over net neutrality. He told us he did not want the government to have too much control over the internet: You may not like the depth of competition wireless currently provides, but wireless networks are getting better by the day and standards are being set for 5G that will compete with wired broadband. What Apple's Hire Of Radio Star Means For Talent
Plus, Five More Things They Should Steal From Broadcast Radio
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 19TH, 2015 –– As the media world continues to ponder Apple’s latest decision to hire a top radio star from the BBC, on the surface it may just look snatching a great talent for its radio arm, iTunes. But is there more to this move than meets the eye? Jockline reached out to a few of radio's top creative thinkers for their take, and how it could translate for broadcast talent in the future. Walter Sabo (above left), an influential International consultant and content expert says, "Hiring a radio star from a BBC popular music station is part of a historical progression. 40 years ago AM's top stars like B.Mitchel Reed, Don Bleu, Tom Donahue, Dan Daniels, Dick Summer, and others made the risky move to an uncertain future on FM. 20 years later, I recruited FM stars to digital Satellite radio. Now a number of celebrities like Adam Corolla and Tom Leykus are moving to podcasts. Today new digital stages like TuneIn, iTunes, iHeart, Pandora, Spotify and others offer an exciting, pristine stage for radio stars. Execs who embrace the power of radio stars, like Kevin Straley at Tunein, will thrive. Other digital audio execs will discover how important radio stars are to the future of their businesses or their product will become just a box of records. There has always been a box of records…right next to the radio." --- Mark Ramsey (above center) commented: 'I can't speak to why (Zane Lowe - right) stood out. My understanding is that he was one of the best the Brits have to offer. He has talent, musical cred, knowledge, and a national profile. National profiles are easier to find in the UK because more audio brands are NATIONAL. But the main reason talent should pay attention is because somebody will pay for talent. Assuming they are able to SHOW that talent on the radio station of their choice today. Did you see that a Hollywood agency just signed up a slew of YouTube stars? You have to be at that level to make a difference in this transmedia world. Apple and others will look for talent that can connect with millennial audiences, and that means it's likely that they will look beyond radio. In this case, after all, they looked beyond the US. The world is now their oyster assuming the platform is worldwide. ----- Valerie Geller of Geller Media International Broadcast Consultants says, "In truth, real talent is rare. And since talent is always a magnet for audiences, its a risk, but it's a calculated risk. While Apple has not exactly shown all their cards on this, like everything they do, they have a plan. This decision, which seems to have rocked the music radio world, is based on creativity, originality, success track with young consumers and hiring someone who they believe has great ears." - Meanwhile, Geller shared a link to a story from Chris Price which was posted as a guest blogger on Matt deagons blog, and James Cridland's post as well. It offers 'Five More Things Internet Radio Should Steal - Interesting read - SEE ARTICLE HERE

[LISTEN] Dan Aykroyd Weighs In On Eddie Murphy's Bizarre SNL 40Appearance
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 18TH, 2015 –– Of all the memorable takeaways from last weekend's airing of SNL's 40th Anniversary, unfortunately, Eddie Murphy's bizarre appearance and speech is what many are still talking about. That includes SiriusXM's Howard Stern who, along with guest Dan Aykroyd, weighed in, as well. Co-starring with Murphy in 'Trading Places, Aykroyd tried his best to be respectful of the comedy legend, but did admit that he would have loved it 'if he’d just gone off on that Eddie rant on somebody in the audience.' According to Mediaite, the whole thing was so uncomfortable that NBC had to edit the video clip before posting it online the next day. “Am I wrong in thinking that this Eddie Murphy moment was very awkward?” Stern asked Aykroyd. “It seemed to me like Eddie Murphy had a gun to his head.” With so many celebrities in attendance, Aykroyd said Murphy “could have riffed on that audience and just ripped it.” LISTEN TO AUDIO HERE
MOTION: Scott Miller Follows McMurray And McNeil To Chicago's Drive; Watts And Lolo Exit Magic 95.9 Baltimore
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 18TH, 2015 –– As first tipped last week by Chicago blogger Robert Feder, Hubbard's WERV-FM 97.1 The Drive made it official yesterday by announcing that beginning early next month, hosts Pete McMurray and Dan McNeil will follow longtime host, Steve Downes, in morning drive. McNeil said: "I've coveted a show like this for a long, long time. That it's coming to a reality on The Drive -- the crown jewel of Chicago radio, is incredible. I'm enormously grateful because my real life again is exceeding the dreams I had for it." Co-hosting with Dan will be Pete McMurray who exits WGN-AM where he's been since November 2012. McMurray came to Chicago from Rockford's WXRX-FM, where from 1993-1998. In 1998, he joined WCKG-FM. In 2001, he took over mornings at WLUP-FM/97.9 The Loop, which lasted until 2003, at which point he returned to WCKG-FM. In January 2007, McMurray returned to hosting mornings at WLUP-FM. He worked there through the end of July 2012. But the news doesn't stop there. Following McMurray from WGN, his producer/sidekick Scott Miller has accepted an offer to join Hubbard Radio, as well, to serve as producer.
According to the Baltimore Sun, two veteran hosts at Radio One's Magic 95.9, Tim Watts and Lolo are off the air. Watts, a fixture on Baltimore radio for decades and at 95.9 for 17 years, and Milliner, a veteran of 22 years at the station, were reported to have been go last week. Radio One officials said they had been "challenged with the performance of Magic and we've tried various things in an effort to gain share. This change unfortunately impacted radio veterans Tim Watts and Lorraine 'Lolo' Milliner."

Zane Lowe Explains Why He Joined Apple
It's About Connecting With Audiences On A Global Level
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 18TH, 2015 –– A lot of radio eyebrows were raised this week with Apple's hiring of BBC/Radio 1's highly popular, Zane Lowe, for what presumably is a role at iTunes. While not many details were given other than the hire, he explains in an interview with The Guardian that the move came down to the opportunity of connecting on a global level. "It's not easy being faced with the prospect of leaving somewhere as amazing as the BBC," he said. "It's about the best place I've ever worked in my life. And it's got the most inspiring people, who do things for all the right reasons -- because they love it, they feel proud to do it there, they feel honored at the privilege of being able to do it for the people, and they take that responsibility very seriously. And you don't leave. You just don't." So why leave then? Lowe explained that he is excited at the prospect of reaching a bigger audience. His job, he added, has always been to connect the listener and the artist, so his decision has nothing to do with ego. "It's about being able to get great music to an audience on a global level. I know that there is an opportunity to come out here and to build something that will reach parts of the world that I've never reached before," he said. Lowe goes on to explain that he wants a new platform for music lovers while bringing back a human aspect that's been absent since the decline of record stores. Tomorrow, Jockline takes a look at what this move represents to other broadcast hosts.
[WATCH] TOM BARNARD: Reflects On Difficult Childhood
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 18TH, 2015 –– One of Minneapolis' most beloved personalities, Tom Barnard, longtime morning host on Cumulus' 92.5, tells WCCO TV that being wealthy is hard to explain; 'I don't care about money," he says. Barnard, who recently inked a new five-year contract opens up to Channel 4's Frank Vascellaro who says being so successful for so long is impressive, but when you understand how he grew up, it’s pretty remarkable. Barnard grew up in north Minneapolis, one of seven kids. He said his life choices back then were basically get out or go to prison. Walking in his old neighborhood, he stopped in front of a home on Russell Avenue North “This particular house: There’s not a whole lot of happy memories, a lot of misery in this one,” he said. He knew he was poor. Nine people were living in a three-bedroom house. To say times were tough is an understatement. “We went for stretches where we literally ate fried bread dough and watermelon for six months because we couldn’t afford any food,” he said. Despair was more prevalent than hope. “You grow up in a neighborhood like this and you are convinced you’ve got no shot because you’re told, ‘Basically, I’m never going to make it out of here,’ so why try?” he said. But Barnard did try, says Vascellaro. He worked hard. “I started work when I was 11 years old,” he said. “I was a janitor, and I’ve been working ever since.” Mom worked hard too. She was a waitress in a diner. Dad, Barnard said, was the problem. “My father was schizophrenic,” he said. “It caused a lot of problems. And my mother — he just wore her down.” Mental illness led to instability. Barnard said frequent evictions meant he lived in 43 different houses growing up. As for his father: “He came back for a couple of months when I was 15 or 16, and then he left and I didn’t see him until 17 years later when he died.” .... Money aside, Barnard still loves what he does.”“I will always work,” Barnard said. “I love doing the KQ morning show, I just love it, and now I have the afternoon show, and I love that, too, because I get to work with my family.” KQRS radio will soon begin airing the best of the Tom Barnard digital show on Sunday mornings. Blackberry Suing Ryan Seacrest's Typo Again
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 18TH, 2015 –– BlackBerry is suing Ryan Seacrest's Typo again for copying its keyboard design. According to The Hollywood Reporter, after a US District Judge in San Francisco previously ordered Typo to pay BlackBerry $860,000, the Ryan Seacrest-backed company now faces another suit from the smartphone maker for continuing to sell its iPhone case with an integrated hardware keyboard. According to the report, BlackBerry has filed a new complaint against Typo in California this week claiming the company’s latest products "slavishly copied .. down to the smallest detail, including the layout of the keyboard itself, the shapes of the keys, and the surface sculpting of the keys." Seacrest reportedly invested $1 million in the company and has promoted the start-up on CNN, at the Consumer Electronics Show and elsewhere. Upon introduction to the market in early 2004, Typo was hit by a lawsuit from BlackBerry, which prevailed upon the judge to issue a preliminary injunction. In reaction to the judge's sanctions order, a Typo spokesperson stressed that the lawsuit "has no impact on the Typo 2 product currently in the marketplace." The lawsuit quotes various product reviews in the press that make comments like the "Blackberry influence remains," and stresses that Typo has willfully copied "instead of re-designing their product to steer clear of BlackBerry's trade dress designs." Seeking various damages, including another injunction, BlackBerry via its lawyers at Quinn Emanuel says it aims "to put an end to Defendants' pattern and practice of unlawful conduct." Typo declined comment about the lawsuit, but mediation is scheduled for this morning.

BBC's Radio 1 Denies Ban On Madonna Music
Alleged Report Sparks Charges Of Ageism
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 17TH, 2015 –– BBC Radio 1 has responded to this weekend's report by The Daily Mail that it banned Madonna from its playlists. Over the weekend, the Mail reported that the 56-year-old pop star was deemed too old to be played on the station, adding that her new single 'Living for Love' has been played just once since its debut in December. They later posted on Facebook, "Radio 1 does not ban anyone - please don't believe the papers. "The tracks played on Radio 1 are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis, and whilst around 40% of the country's 15 to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist's age is never a factor. "In fact, Paul McCartney currently has two tracks - 'FourFiveSeconds' and 'Only One' - on the Radio 1 playlist."
According to digitalspy.com, this isn't the first time that the station has come under fire for its apparent reluctance to play songs by older artists. Morning host Nick Grimshaw previously claimed that Robbie Williams was "not relevant" to the 13 and 14-year-olds who listen to the station. However, Radio 1 DJ Matt Edmondson denied that age is a factor - pointing out that Pharrell Williams has had many tracks playlisted recently, and is the same age as Robbie. Meanwhile, whether this story turns out to have merit or not, it's sparked charges of ageism. According to inquisitr.com, On Radio 1’s Facebook page, listeners decried the station’s alleged decision not to play Madonna’s new song “Living for Love.” Many of the posters said that the station’s blatant ageism towards Madonna is just as bad as racism and homophobia. Others mocked Radio 1 for being irrelevant itself. All bickering aside, Madonna’s “Living for Love” now registers as one of the fifty most-played songs at pop radio.
[WATCH] Popular Baltimore Host Gets Second Chance At Life
THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 17TH, 2015 –– As Jockline reported nearly a year ago, Mix 106.5/Baltimore midday host Maria Dennis was diagnosed with leukemia. Now, according to WJZ/CBS TV Baltimore, she’s getting a second chance at life and feels lucky to be alive. “They gave me a 50% chance of making it,” she said. Last March, after suffering from bad stomachaches, routine tests prompted hearing what everybody dreads. “I said, `Leukemia? How is that possible?'” Dennis said. She immediately began treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After four rounds of intense chemotherapy, she was put on a list for a bone marrow transplant. In June, Dennis’ prayers were answered. “I just can’t imagine someone going through a surgery for a stranger and giving their bone marrow and saving someone’s life,” Dennis said. She hasn’t decided what she’ll say to the donor. Dennis says she always expected to survive. Finally, Dennis has beat cancer. “I got an email from my doc. He’s like, `Congratulations. No signs of leukemia, cancer-free.’ It was wonderful,” she said. She believes her battle with leukemia has reminded her what’s really important in life and she hopes her message reaches others going through the same thing. Dennis says she'll continue to take chemo pills every day. WATCH HERE
