Salem Names Phil Boyce VP/Director of Spoken Word Salem Communications Corporation announced yesterday the appointment of Phil Boyce to the position of Vice President, Director of Spoken Word Format. In this new role, Phil will oversee the programming practices of all spoken word English formats. Phil will lead Salem's programming department as we improve the overall sound and effectiveness of our News Talk, Teaching and Talk, and Business formatted stations. Boyce joins Salem after three years as President of Programming at Talk Radio Network. Boyce is known for his 14-year stint as Program Director of WABC in New York. During his time there, Boyce was named Vice President of News Talk Programming for ABC Radio and later Citadel. He is widely credited with hiring Sean Hannity in New York and taking his show into national syndication for ABC in 2001. Radio Remembers Don Cornelius THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 2ND, 2012 –– On today's nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Show (shown left in circa 80's photo), he'll pay special tribute to his longtime friend and former Chicago radio colleague, Don Cornelius, whom we were saddened to learn yesterday took his own life at his home in Los Angeles. Corneilius, who once worked as an insurance salesman in Chicago, spent $400 on a broadcasting course and landed a part-time job in 1966 at WVON. Later, he moonlighted on WCIU-TV and began hosting "A Black's View of the News." It was there he first pitched a black music show and launched "Soul Train." Today Joyner will share his memories along with many other planned guests including Soul Train's first guest’ Gladys Knight, Writer Kenny Gamble, Cedric the Entertainer, Shalamar's Howard Hewitt and more. Both Don and Tom got to know each other while working in Chicago radio. Along with Joyner, others paid tribute as well. WRKS (98.7 FM) saluted Cornelius yesterday at noon with a music and a listener call-in segment. WBLS/New York PD Skip Dillard weighed in as well. He told The New York's Daily News "the extraordinary thing about Cornelius was that “He saw a need and served it. He had no investment or powerful network behind him, but he created a brand that grew far beyond the African-American base he sought. This Sunday's New York Times To Profile KFI's Insalaco's Journey With Filmaker Wood THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 2ND, 2012 –– The 1994 film, “Ed Wood,” staring Johnny Depp would seem to have dramatized nearly everything the world needs to know about that famous filmmaker. At the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, last week KFI Executive Producer of the Tim Conway program, Jason Insalaco, debuted the only known existing complete print of a 22-minute television pilot by Edward D. Wood. The odd, minimalist pilot, "Final Curtain" was written, produced and directed by Wood in 1957. Wood wrote script for Bela Lugosi. Hollywood legend has it that Lugosi died while reading the script. Insalaco's great uncle, Paul Marco, was Kelton the Cop in Plan 9 From Outer Space and reprised the role in other Wood films. Marco regaled Jason about this lost Wood treasure until Marco's death in 2006. This Sunday's New York Times chronicles Jason's personal journey to find and restore this lost film. Jason tells Jockline Daily: "It feels good to bring "Final Curtain" a receptive audience that it deserves after lingering in obscurity for the last 55 years. Letterman Celebrates His 30th Anniversary Tonight; Inspired Jocks With 'Realness' THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 1ST, 2012 –– Ask those in radio who remember David Letterman's ascent into late night TV and they'll likely tell you aside from bringing more laughs to late night, he also inspired more "realness" to personality shows. Tonight Letterman airs his 30th anniversary special on CBS. Superbowl Media Day; Artie Lange Draws Laugh From Belichick THE MOUTH, FEBRUARY 1ST, 2012 –– As best we can tell, there are a ton of radio shows headed to this week's Superbowl in Indianapolis. According to WTHR's blog, for a sports fan or career journalist, it was beyond cool to “people watch” as personalities from ESPN, NFL network, broadcast networks, top-flight newspapers and everywhere in between zipped by, making their way from station to station, player to player was almost dizzying."There's even a Facebook Media Page set up to see all the pics. Each team's coach was there for a special session and, like the event itself, some of the questioners lived up to the occasion. One included a caped reporter from Nickelodeon asked players about their favorite superhero. Another convinced Giants safety Antrel Rolle to belt out a chorus of Madonna’s “Material Girl.” Oh yeah, there in the crowd were none other than DirecTV's Nick DiPaolo and Artie Lange. Leave it to Lange to be the one who got Coach Belichick to laugh (according to our notes, his first time ever). That would go to AMP/Calgary who held it's highly debated "Breast Summer Ever" contest. The winner, as reported here exclusively in Jockline Daily, was won by transgender woman Avery Mitchell, but not before the station received major flak for what some called sexism. classic-rock radio station in Chicago is busting a controversial move. Last Sunday, the Loop announced it's winners which gave away a breast implant worth $7,000. Participants had the option of sending in a picture of their real breasts or under a t-shirt along with an essay on why they wanted the surgery. Clear Channel Puts Their Money In Seacrest Company THE MOUTH, JANUARY 31ST, 2012 –– Clear Channel Media and Entertainment announced today its acquisition of a minority stake in Ryan Seacrest’s television and film production company. In the process, Seacrest also will work with CCME's private equity firms Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital. Both firms are said to have committed as much as $300 million to the initiative, which could focus on music publishers, technology makers or other companies. Seacrest said by phone that the Clear Channel investment was an “efficient route for future growth” and said he would tap into the company’s marketing assets, including its many radio stations and Web sites. CCME's Bob Pittman called the collaboration a chance “to share in some of the success we think he’s going to have, and to enable some of it.” In the meantime, Seacrest is still dealing with his renewal on American Idol which expires this Spring. With a reported salary of $45 million from his host duties, The Hollywood Reporter suggested earlier this month he might have to take salary cut to remain. Of course there's always plan 'B' which would be a show on NBC who have aggressively pursued his presence on 'Today Show' after Matt Lauer's exit.
Ex-Factors: Scherzinger & Jones Not Returning To U.S. X-Factor; Abdul? THE MOUTH, JANUARY 31ST, 2012 –– It was bloody Monday for the cast of Simon Cowell's U.S. X-Factor. First came news of Host Steve Jones and Judge Nicole Scherzinger's exit. Then, Deadline Hollywood reported that a source also says Cowell's longtime friend and American Idol colleague Paula Abdul won’t be returning as well. The report also suggests that the trio didn't leave on their own accord. Last night Fox confirmed the departures of both Scherzinger and Jones with Jones tweeting: 'I won't be hosting next seasons XFactor which is a shame but I can't complain as I've had a great time. Good luck to everyone on the show." As you may recall, Cowell had predicted an audience of 20 million, but actuality drew a modest 12.4 million. Some have suggested the changes were linked to the controversy following the elimination of Rachel Crow. However, ratings was likely the culprit. What will be interesting is to see who Cowell picks as his host. OV_ _ BLO_ N: Pat Sajak Now Says Drunk Comment Was Exaggerated [VIDEO] THE MOUTH, JANUARY 27TH, 2012 –– Pat Sajak, longtime host of 'Wheel of Fortune', is known for his quick wit and, as a former radio personality, kind of hates to see all the publcity he's been getting lately go away. This, of course, from his comments on a recent appearance on ESPN2 (see video link below) where he admitted, back in the day, chasing a few margaritas between tapings of WOF with letter-flipper, Vanna Whilte. "Vanna and I would go across and have two or three or six and then come and do the last shows and have trouble recognizing the alphabet ... I had a great time. I have no idea if the shows were any good, but no one said anything, so I guess I did OK," said Sajak. But now he tells ABC News Radio he may have exaggerated a bit. "To be honest, and I hate to put an end to this drinking thing because we've gotten a lot of mileage out of it, but it was probably a half a dozen times we went across the street and had a margarita ... But when you're telling a story on the air, you want to make it sound more exciting than it was. In truth, you really can't do television if you're stumbling all over the place." Now, 93.7 The Bus Program Director Tony Ricciardi (shown) wants to make sure he remains a daily memory for commuters by renaming Park Ave. to Paterno Way. In his petition he says: "We at 93.7 The Bus want to honor the life of Joe Paterno. Rather than rename the stadium or force his name onto an existing structure already named after someone, we feel we can honor the Coach in a different manner. We would like to change the name of Park Avenue to Paterno Way. The existing Park Avenue runs along the Nittany Lion Inn, the soon-to-be completed Suzanne Pohland Paterno Catholic Student Faith Center, dormitories, it intersects with McKee Street where the Paternos lived, many students walk along the road to and from class, Schreyer House (where the University President traditionally lives), the Mount Nittany Medical Center, and of course, it runs along Beaver Stadium. Yesterday President Barack Obama stepped off Air Force One for a visit, there to meet him was the Governor who handed him a note (see doc. at link). But after a few seconds of chatting, the President brought up her book "Scorpions fro Breakfast" and he apparently wasn't too pleased with some of her comments. This was following by the well-publicize footage of her getting in face with a finger, then while she still speaking, he appeared to walk away. KFYI/Phoenix' Mike Broomhead spoke to her shortly afterward and she told him "I wanted to talk to him about the great Arizona turnaround." Museum of Broadcast Communications Gets $2.7 Million Boost From Comcast & NBC THE MOUTH, JANUARY 27TH, 2012/BUSINESS WIRE –– And you thought having Oprah's door was big. Now comes word that Comcast Corporation, NBC News and NBC 5 Chicago made a commitment to the new 62,000-square-foot Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago, pledging more than $2.7 million worth of in-kind and financial support to its completion and promotion. Comcast will donate up to $500,000 of 30-second advertising spots every year for five years to air on Comcast cable systems to help advertise and promote the museum. To assist the museum in fulfilling its mission of telling the story of the history of television, NBC News and NBC 5 will make available select historic artifacts to the facility that can be displayed as part of temporary or permanent exhibits and donate video clips to museum archives to enhance its collection. Entercom Thinks Contest Rules Should Be Allowed Off Air [DOCUMENT] THE MOUTH, JANUARY 26TH, 2012 –– Fresh on the heels of last week's proposed $22,000 fine by the FCC against some Clear Channel stations for what it said to be a failure to broadcast all material rules of a particular contest on-air, comes word that at least one company thinks it's time to allow stations to place their contest rules on the Web, or elsewhere. In a proposal submitted to the commission by Entercom Communications Corp., owner of 112 stations, it suggests its proposal is in line with the way most Americans get information today compared to over 30 years ago. In its petition, they stated: “Relying on broadcast announcements for material contest information may have been an acceptable way to attempt to inform the public about the terms of a contest when the contest rule was enacted in 1976, but it is certainly not the case today, especially when there are superior methods that are simple to implement." Entercom ask that the commission amend the current contest rules so that stations can either continue with how they're doing it now, or place the rules on their website or make them available via fax, email, mail or in-person. Go Figure: Campus Station May Lose License If It Keeps Training THE MOUTH, JANUARY 26TH, 2012 –– We're still trying to figure this one out. According to the Winnepeg Free Press, The Red River College student radio station in Ottawa was given notice Monday by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) that a new campus radio policy will affect its broadcasting status because the CRTC won’t license stations that exist purely for educational reasons anymore. On Facebook, the station posted "Today the CRTC informed KICK-FM that, under the new campus radio policy, we will no longer be allowed to train students for a career in radio. As you may know, our raison d’être is training students from Red River College’s Creative Communications program…It is doubtful that RRC will want to continue funding a radio station that does not work within its educational department. Therefore, it seems unlikely at this point in time that KICK-FM will remain on-air." said a statement posted on the station’s Facebook page.

According to ntgm news, Mark Levine, had a special love for food and enjoyed taste-testing hamburgers with his family. He first came into contact through her Ashley Lauren Foundation, an organization who's mission is to provide hope and help for New Jersey children and their families when facing pediatric cancer. It relies on donations to accomplish its goals which include offering emotional support, material assistance, financial assistance, parties, gifts and anything else that is needed to ease a child’s suffering in any way. When Mark passed away, he left behind his own hamburger recipe that he called the “Mark The Shark Burger.” Vermeulen then got together with Matt Ryan of 94.3 The Point, who approached Mike Jurusz, the executive chef at 709, and presented Jurusz with the recipe. Dial Global, which broadcasts nearly 100 NFL games and exclusively broadcasts all NFL primetime games, the Playoffs and the Super Bowl to a national audience, commissioned the study which was conducted by Edison Research. "People think of football as a television-only event. This survey shows that in addition, many millions of people are seeking out coverage of the games on the radio," said Larry Rosin, Edison Research President. “The overwhelming majority of radio listeners to the games listened on AM or FM radio, but the survey did show usage of Sirius XM and the Verizon Mobile App as alternative methods to listen to the games.”

Georgia Night Jock Shot And Killed While Leaving Station; Killer Remains Loose THE MOUTH, JANUARY 23RD, 2012 –– Stephon Edgerton, aka Juan Gatti, a night jock on radio station V96/Valdosta Ga, was shot just as he left the station following his night shift which he had just begun 3 month's before. Fellow host Lamar Freeman told WALB TV "Evidently someone was out waiting on him and just started shooting." Gatti was shot twice in the body and once in the head as he left work just after midnight. Surprisingly, he had managed to call 911 after being shot and told the operator he was shot by a man wearing a mask. After being rushed to the hospital, he died a short while later. Gatti is survived by his wife and 3 children. His killer remains on the loose.

Last year, on the heels of his addition to sister station WABC-AM New York's line-up, came immediate speculation that he would join KABC LA as well. However, when PD Jack Silver announced his line-up in late December, his name was surprisingly absent. Rivera will take over the 10:00 AM -Noon slot beginning Jan. 30th. He told The LA Times: "I think I represent a big swath of the middle, and it's kind of drowned out, or nonexistent," said Rivera. "It's almost as if talk radio is setting the agenda politically, and that agenda is extremely partisan. It's carving up the country, it has a strong racial undertone, and I don't think that's good for anybody," he said. THE MOUTH, JANUARY 19TH, 2012 -ART VUOLO –– Last Saturday night Indianapolis filmmaker David Fulton orchestrated a big-time premier complete with limo's, a red carpet plus a before and after reception at Loughmiller's, a downtown pub and eatery, just a few blocks from the IMAX Theatre that served as the venue. The documentary, "Naptown Rock Radio Wars," traces the epic battle back between 1958 and 1979 involving WIBC-AM (1070), WIFE-AM (1310) and WNAP-FM (93.1). Stern Rings Up Cannon On Return To 923 Now/New York; 'I Never Called Mariah Carey A B----h' [AUDIO] THE MOUTH, JANUARY 17TH, 2012 –– Following last week's false start of 923 New York's Nick Cannon's return to the air following a kidney failure, he officially made it back this morning. Welcome Back: Jenny Craig Pulls Ads From Kyles & Jackie O Over 'Fat Slag' Comment THE MOUTH, JANUARY 17TH, 2012 –– When last year ended, Australia's most popular show, Kyles & Jackie O, was hoping the brouhaha raised following Kyle calling a female journalist a 'fat slag,' (Australian for 'slut') had ended following Southern Cross Austereo standing by the team and saying they would return in 2012. Well, the new year didn't go off quite as happily as planned as weight-loss giant Jenny Craig pulled the plug on its advertising their first day back on the air on Sydney's 2Day-FM. According to smh.com, Craig made the announcement on its Facebook page, saying it "badly misjudged public perception of Kyle Sandilands". Originally, Craig had continued to sponsor the show in support of ambassador Mel B. "Our intention was to support our ambassador in her broader media role," the Facebook statement said. "We feel sorry we have offended so many people, underestimated the sentiment against Kyle and are clearly upset that we made such a mistake. Taking the news in stride, a company spokesman responded in a statement: "As a business Southern Cross Austereo constantly strives to deliver attractive products for Australians. We are confident the Kyle and Jackie O Show has been positively re-set for 2012 and our teams are committed to ensuring it is both entertaining for listeners and provides an advertiser friendly environment," the statement read.
Stroke And ShortBus Go Live And Local At 97X Panama City THE MOUTH, JANUARY 17TH, 2012 –– While some say there's a shortage of new shows out there, Panama City's 97X, WYYX-FM is further proof, if you look hard enough you'll still find new shows launching and many are being courted to the majors. This was the case recently in Panama City where "That Guy Kramer" was sought by a number of stations around the country from Island 106, but finally ended up at Play 987 in Tampa. Now comes Stroke and ShortBus. They recently followed a syndicated show in favor of local programming. It features Stroke Mastro, who in eight years has worked his way up from the position of intern to Morning show co-host. The other co-host on the show is local celebrity ShortBus, who also started as an intern, seven years ago, and has since been a personality on every day part the station has in that time. So far, S&S tells Jockline Daily that local reaction has been outstanding. But being local in a smaller market means you have to keep up with the same caliber guests as bigger markets or as those who appear on syndicated shows. Recently they welcomed Moonlite Bunny Ranch proprietor Dennis Hof (who fessed up future plans of opening a brothel based on science fiction and space alien fetishes). WKDD's Jenn Ryan To Return To The Air Following Unusual Vocal Chords Procedure [VIDEO] THE MOUTH, JANUARY 16TH, 2012 –– Being on the air, we've all lost our voices from time to time. But imagine losing it and not being to get it back after nearly two months? That's what happened to WKDD 98.1 Akron's Jenn Ryan of Keith & Jenn's morning show who hasn't been able to speak since last Thanksgiving after a bout with bronchitis. According to WKYC TV, After antibiotics, steroids, lots of hot drinks and trusted family recipes," Ryan heard from a listener about an special procedure at the Cleveland Clinic which amounted to massaging the vocal chords. Dr. Claudio Milstein found that Ryan's vocal cords had literally moved out of position after hard coughing. No sooner had Milstein used his hands like that of a chiropractor, he was able to get her speaking clearly almost seconds. Louisville Legend Bill Bailey Passes Away At 81 THE MOUTH, JANUARY 16TH, 2012 –– Former Louisville radio great, Bill Bailey, known as the "Duke of Louisville" during the 60s and '70s, died at a hospital in Louisville on Saturday. He was 81. According to WTVQ TV, Bailey did on-air at both WAKY-AM and WKLO-AM and later worked at WVLK-AM in Lexington until he retired in 1994. Cumulus SVP Corporate Programming, Mike McVay, who worked with Bill back in '79 and the '80's at WAKY tells Jockline Daily: Bill Bailey was an amazing talent. He was capable of extemperaneous humor, that today, is unheard of. He could do no wrong, as far as the audience was concerned, and they were more loyal to him than they were to the radio station. I still have airchecks of Bill that I use as "teaching tools." His ability to paint-a-picture, and tell stories, came at a time when air talent talked over 10-second intro's. Family & Friends Say Goodbye To The Heywoods THE MOUTH, JANUARY 16TH, 2012 –– in perhaps one of radio's most tragic stories ever, came last week's report of an apparent double-suicide of longtime Phoenix radio host Bill Heywood and his wife Susan. According to The Tucson Citizen, this past Saturday more than 200 people attended the memorial service for Bill and his wife, Susan, at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, a place where the Heywoods lived and played for years before relocating to northeast Phoenix. Known for their attention to detail, the Heywoods left very specific instructions for close friends and family for conducting their memorial service including that guests not chew gum. “I’m not really sure how we’re going to force compliance on that gum thing,” iconic host Charlie Van Dyke said. “We don’t have gum police, but you have been warned.” On a lighter note, KMLE-FM’s Tim Hattrick spoke of Bill’s sense of humor that led him once to get Hattrick to get talked into joining Bill on a golf course after midnight to hit golf balls. The two men were in their underwear. “It began what was the most awesome apprenticeship, not in my career, but my life,” Hattrick said. Bill and his wife were found dead Jan. 4, n a Scottsdale hotel room. Suicide notes were left inside the bedroom, police said the deaths are still being investigated.aid. “We don’t have gum police, but you have been warned.”

TV's 'Hogan's Heroes' Star Bob Crane Nominated for Induction Into National Radio Hall of Fame THE MOUTH, JANUARY 16TH, 2012/PR Newswire –– Longtime radio star, Bob Crane, who later portrayed Colonel Robert E. Hogan in the television series Hogan's Heroes, has been nominated posthumously for induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame for his extensive work in broadcasting. He began his broadcasting career at WLEA in Hornell, NY, in 1950. In 1951, he returned to Connecticut and worked for WBIS in Bristol for three months before moving to WLIZ/WICC in Bridgeport. Crane was also program director for WLEA, WBIS and WICC. In 1956, he relocated to Los Angeles to work for KNX-CBS Radio, where he conducted interviews with approximately 3,000 celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Dick Van Dyke, Bill Cosby and Ronald Reagan. Crane left KNX in 1965 to pursue a career in acting but remained close to radio throughout his life, broadcasting for the U.S. Armed Forces Radio Network in the late 1960s and KMPC in Los Angeles in the 1970s. On June 29, 1978, Crane was murdered in Scottsdale, AZ, and the crime has never been officially solved.
Radio 2's Chris Evans Buys Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Car For $742,000 THE MOUTH, JANUARY 16TH, 2012 –– For those who read Jockline Daily regularly, you know two things about Radio's One's Chris Evans (shown inset): 1) He apparently is well-compensated. 2) He has a penchant for fine cars. Last year we reported his purchase another Ferrari once owned by Hollywood actor James Coburn that he paid millions for and was garaged along with his other Ferraris. According to The Mirror, Evans bought the car used in the classic film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for almost 500,000 pounds ($742,000). He plans to restore the Chitty Chitty auto and add to his extensive collection. The car — the only one in the film that actually worked — was built by the Ford Racing Team and has a Ford three-litre V6 engine.

DUI Charges Dropped Against Merlin's Randy Michaels THE MOUTH, JANUARY 13TH, 2012 -- WHIO TV/Cincinnati is reporting A drunken driving charge against radio executive and former Tribune Co. CEO Randy Michaels has been dismissed in southwest Ohio. Michaels was arrested in October in Middletown, but today a prosecutor withdrew the driving under the influence charge and Michaels pleaded guilty to driving into a closed street. He was fined $30 plus scourt costs. Michael's attorney says he was not under the influence of alcohol and was innocent. More details later at Jockline Daily
BBC Head: 'Radio Needs To Provide More Video To Attract Younger Audience' THE MOUTH, JANUARY 13TH, 2012 –– Please, no thank you's required. Jockline Daily has been preachin' this sermon forever, but now Tim Davie, who runs the BBC'S radio output is giving us more ammunition. At a recent event sponsored by Absolute Radio, he said the increasing use of smartphones, tablets and other portable devices meant radio had to embrace a radical change which included the use of images such as studio webcams. "With some regret we are moving to a screen world. Radio needs to accept that and get on with it and enjoy it," Davie said. C-SPAN Pranked Again With Romney's 'Male-Member' Query [VIDEO] THE MOUTH, JANUARY 13TH, 2012 –– Apparently, someone is getting every inch out of this bit they can and it seems to be working. As we reported earlier this week, a man named Dan called into C-SPAN's morning show this week and after a bit of political babbling asked about the size of Governor, and republican presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney's male member size. Wayne MacDonald, Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican party didn't seem as shocked as the female host by the call; began smiling and saying “I want to make sure I heard him right.” This was followed by yesterday's appearance by former New Hampshire governor Judd Gregg on C-SPAN. He too took a call which later led to the same question. As if C-SPAN needed more publicity on this, it's been all over radio this week, even being replayed yesterday by one of radio's biggest talk host. The question remains: who is this guy? Son Of Fayetteville Group Owner Arrested Following Station Fire THE MOUTH, JANUARY 13TH, 2012 –– Fayetteville Arkasas police have arrested 28 year old Jonathan Butler whom they say set fire his father's company, Butler Broadcasting following an altercation with another employee. According to knwa.com, he building houses multiple local radio stations, including 104.9 The X. Jonathan,, who lives in a building near the stations, reportedly "came outside, made some threats to employees inside, then proceeded to go outside and pour some type of flammable liquid on top of a vehicle and then ignited that substance." Police say after igniting a fire in his apartment, he locked himself inside the station itself causing a brief stand off with authorities. Jessica Marquez was working in the station when the fire started, told KNWA TV, "When I finished my shift and I walked to the production room, and I saw the smoke from downstairs, and I hadn't even noticed the place was on fire." Lex & Terry Sue Jacksonville Station Over Cancellation THE MOUTH, JANUARY 12TH, 2012 –– The USRN syndicated Lex & Terry Show (shown) have filed suit against Seven Bridges Radio LLC Jacksonville, Fl, claiming that they were improperly canceled last October, just six months into their agreement. According to Times-Union, their attorney, John Phillips, filed the suit last week in Circuit Court against Seven Bridges Radio LLC, the owner of WJXL (1010 AM), also known as 1010XL. According to the suit, their agreement called for the WJXL to pay approximately $800,000 plus bonuses for rights to air the show. The payment included $12,500 every two weeks through 2012 and 2013. There were also bonuses and ad revenue incentives as well. Phillips told the Times-Union "I don’t know what they were thinking,” he said. “They won’t return my calls.” Lex and Terry were replaced on the air with "Final Radio” featuring Jeff Prosser and Dan Hicken.

Beck's New Digs Welcomed By Town Locals [VIDEO] THE MOUTH, JANUARY 12TH, 2012 –– As reported awhile back, the syndicated radio, TV host and publisher, Glenn Beck, is moving his media empire to The Studios at Las Colinas in Irving Texas. Originally he had picked a vacant mega-church site, but cancelled because of the amount of work and expense it would take to transform it into a broadcast center. Now, according to 33TV Dallas, Beck is busy remodeling a 15,000 square feet of studio space on Soundstage One for GBTV. Teams of construction crews are transforming the space into a state of the art HD broadcast center. More than just Beck are happy with the move. The Irving Chamber of Commerce is ecstatic. They told 33TV “It’s been great for us,” said the Director of Business Development Leanne Weymouth. “It’s going to create a significant amount of jobs and tourism, increased tourism for us.” And for those of you wondered how Beck's exit from Fox TV to launch his own subscriber-based show would affect his income, you can rest your fears. According to The Wall Street Journal, GBTV is on track to take in more than 20-million dollars in its first year alone. THE MOUTH, JANUARY 11TH, 2012 –– As the Supreme Court continued its discussion on fleeting expletives yesterday, the focal point centered on whether TV networks should be treated differently from their satellite and cable counterparts. A lot of attention was given to ABC's "NYPD Blue" in which a woman's breasts and buttocks were exposed. Justice Elena Kagan sympathized with the networks saying: "There is some amount of uncertainty, and ABC finds itself in that area of uncertainty," she said. "Because it turns out that nudity -- sometimes it's allowed as to some body parts and sometimes it's not allowed -- and the commission hadn't really said anything about it for 50 years," until the clampdown a decade ago. Radio apparently didn't get the same sympathy. In the Department of Justice's Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli, Jr.'s rebuttal on behalf of the petitioners, he said "With respect to the notion of self restraint on the part of broadcasters, I think a little history is in order here. The commission started with the rule that came out of Pacifica. What it faced in the 1980's, with that being the outer bound of the commission's authority, was the explosion of the shock jock phenomenon, Howard Stern and Bubba the Love Sponge and the rest of it which didn't use any of the seven words in the (George) Carlin monologue, but which was highly vile and lewd, and it required the commission to make a judgment. Now, that was all advertising sponsored broadcast. And so I do think the risk of the race to the bottom is real, and I think history is showing it." READ TRANSCRIPT HERE

ESPN's Cowherd Picks Tebow THE MOUTH, JANUARY 11TH, 2012 –– Not sure if ESPN's Colin Cowherd prayed about this, but while appearing yesterday on ESPN's Las Vegas affiliate KWWN with "The Afternoon Gridlock's' Paulie Howard and Seat Williams, he said Tebow's overtime magic "Is sort of like hitting on 17 in Vegas ... Yesterday Ford Motors announced they would be offering this TuneIn Radio app; thus, affording its drivers more than 50,000 AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations featuring music, sports and news from around the world. They made the announcement at the 2012 International CES. According to the pitch, an updated version of that app enables support for Dearborn's auto interconnect which'll allow drivers to tune into AM, FM, HD and Internet radio stations. And naturally like everything else SYNC, it'll be just as happy taking commands over voice. The updated app should hit the App Store soon, but we'd imagine an update to the Android version isn't far out. Ford’s current catalog of SYNC-compatible apps include Pandora, Stitcher, Slacker Radio, iHeart Radio and OpenBeak, a Twitter interface.

Filmmakers, David Fulton (producer/director), Al Stone (producer) and former air-talent and programmer for WIFE and WNAP-FM, teamed to create this documentary film "Naptown Rock Radio Wars." Among the interesting tidbits centered around the intensely competitive owners, managers and highly imaginative personalities. Bouncin’ Bill Baker’s phenomenally popular morning radio show on WIBC in the late fifties and early sixties was called “Toast and Coffee.” Back then he would get an occasional call from Elvis Presley asking what he thought of the new single. When Don Burden bought WISH-AM in 1963, the sellers thought so little of the value of their FM radio station that they threw the FM station into the deal for free. “The Emperor” Joe Light’s evening show on WIFE-AM reportedly had 99% of the listening audience. Robert W. Morgan, a popular morning host at KHJ LA, so impressed Don Burden that he cloned the character and created “Roger W. Morgan” for his stations. At one time he had a “Roger W. Fleeting Expletives Revisited By Supreme Court THE MOUTH, JANUARY 9TH, 2012 –– Beginning tomorrow, January 10th, the U.S. Supreme Court will once again review the constitutionality of on-air indecency. The case will center on expletives used by Cher during the 2002 Billboard Awards when she said of her critics: “F--- ‘em. I still have a job and they don’t.” Attention will also be directed at Nicole Richie who on awards shows said “Have you ever tried to get cow s--- out of a Prada purse? It’s not so f---ing simple.” According to Bloomberg News, Fox and ABC are asking the court to overturn a 34-year-old ruling that lets the FCC regulate broadcast indecency while exempting cable and satellite television and the Internet. “It just doesn’t make sense to say one rule applies to everything else and then say one special rule applies to broadcast television,” said Steven R. Shapiro, legal director of the New York-based American Civil Liberties Union. Broadcasters have long argued the the rules are so vague they violate the Constitution. As noted in a study by The Winter's organization: prime-time use of the word f-word, either bleeped or muted, already has risen from 11 instances in 2005 to 276 instances in 2010. Seacrest: "I Can't Imagine Life Without American Idol" THE MOUTH, JANUARY 9TH, 2012 –– Speaking at yesterday's TV Critics Association Press Tour, the uber media mogul, Ryan Seacrest, said "I love this television show ... and I can't imagine life without American Idol." According to The Hollywood Reporter, his $15 million contract is set to expire after this season wraps up and then of course there are those rumors of him being eyed by NBC's Today Show where he would follow Matt Lauer. He remained mum on that subject saying "I have a deal with NBC Universal that we're in negotiations discussing what I'll do, but I already work there." According the report, network executives insist they want to keep Seacrest on the show. Cannon Makes Slow Return To 92.3 Now; Howard Stern Might Make An Appearance THE MOUTH, JANUARY 9TH, 2012 –– In a rash of tweets over the weekend, it appears now that 923 Now FM/New York morning host Nick Cannon had left the hospital and was set to return to the air. Contrary to tweets that he would be back on the air this morning, he later tweeted: "Srry to break the news but @NickCannon needs just a BIT more time to rest. Get better Nick! Rollin' With Nick Cannon will be back LIVE soon!." In another homecoming of sorts, soon to be new judge of 'America's Got Talent,' Howard Stern, was making his own homecoming of sorts as he was mentioned to be joining as a guest when Cannon returns. Wife Mariah Carey tweeted: to top it off…the one and ONLY Howard Stern might JUST make an appearance during Monday’s “Rollin” as well! Yes–the once 92.3 shock jock just might be making a re-appearance!!" As you'll recall, 92.3, once known as K-Rock, served as home to the King of all media for nearly 20 years. While on vacation in Aspen, Colorado with Mariah and his twins Roc and Roe, Nick was rushed to the hospital due to a mild kidney failure.

A Knox Indiana morning host plans to be on the air for 187 hours in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for longest continuous radio broadcast by a single host. This would exceed the current record held by Italian jock who lasted a total of 183 hours, or just over a week, in May 2009. According to wane.com, Tom Berg (shown) of WKVI in Knox, Indiana prepares for July 9th launch. If all goes well, his mission will be accomplished by Monday, July 16 at midnight. According to Guinness rules, 2 people other than Berg have to be in the building to serve as witnesses. Berg said the reason wants to do this is because this is a record that needs to return to the U.S..

British Host Enlist Help Of His Million Plus Listeners To Go After Car Thief THE MOUTH, JANUARY 9TH, 2012 –– The highly popular Graham Norton, who hosts a Friday night chat show on BBC1 Television and a Saturday morning Radio show on BBC Radio 2 (10am to 1pm), decided to reach out to his millions of radio listeners over the weekend to find his £50,000 (about $77,000 U.S.) car after it was stolen by burglars. Bert's Dauler To Partake In CNN's Dr. Gupta's 2012 Fit Nation Triathlon THE MOUTH, JANUARY 6TH, 2012 –– Be forewarned, better have some hankies handy when you watch The Bert Show's executive producer Jeff Dauler's video appeal (see 3 video down) to Dr. Sanjay Gupta's to participate in his 2012 Fit Nation Triathlon. It earned him one the seven slots on this year's edition. They'll each train for the Nautica Malibu Triathlon with Dr. Sanjay Gupta along with a road bike and all of its accessories, a wet suit, and a gym membership. New Details Emerge In Heywood Deaths; Funeral Instructions Left At Home THE MOUTH, JANUARY 6TH, 2012 –– Following this week's tragic story involving the apparent suicide of longtime Phoenix host Bill Heywood and his wife Susan, new details have begun to emerge. According to the Tucson Citizen, Scottsdale police now say the Heywoods wrote down funeral arrangements and left instructions for family and friends at their home in northeast Phoenix. Police have not released the exact wording of the note but many friends have recall their “complete romance.” Longtime friend Charlie Van Dyke noted Susan’s declining health, but said their passion never wavered: “They were very intense into each other,” Van Dyke said. KMLE's Tim Hatterick of the Tim & Willy Show who was part of his KOY AM & FM show in 1986-87 told Jockline Daily: "The last time I saw Bill and Susan was just a few weeks ago at our induction to the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame. During our acceptance speech I told a Heywood style joke: "When I was a kid I would ride to school in my dad's car listening to Bill on KOY." One day he cracked me up so hard I said- "Dad! Former Phoenix Host & Wife Found Dead In Apparent Double Suicide THE MOUTH, JANUARY 5TH, 2012 –– Longtime KTAR/Phoenix host Bill Heywood and his wife, Susan, were found dead Wednesday afternoon in a Scottsdale hotel room. According to ktar.com: "Around 1 p.m., hotel staff found a suicide note in one of the rooms at the Homewood Suites near Scottsdale and Mountain View roads and called police. Heywood and his wife, Susan, were found dead inside the room by authorities. Heywood had spent several on KTAR following a long stint on KOY. Most recently he had been working in real estate. Finance and medical hardships may have been a factor. azcentral reported the couple filed for bankruptcy in August 2009 and lost their Biltmore-area home to foreclosure about two years ago. Susan Heywood was said to be suffering from medical issues as well. Heywood enjoyed a distinquished career dating back to the '60's. He spent 15 years KOY-AM (1230) and the former KOY-FM. His last regular on air stint was In 2005 when he returned to KTAR-AM to handle a Saturday morning news show.

Winans Says Key Word For Building Your Own Personality Brand: "Distinct" THE MOUTH, JANUARY 5TH, 2012 –– Among the top sessions planned for this year's Morning Show Boot Camp, set for Miami, June 21-22 at the amazing Eden Roc Hotel will be a special "social-media" presention by Stephanie Winans of The Randy Lane Company. With a sneak peek as some of what you'll hear, we've provided a few excerpts from her recent "12 month resolution for building your own personality brand" article. She writes: "If you were asked to define your personality brand in 3-4 words, could you do it? The American Marketing Association defines a brand as a "name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers ... The key word in this definition is "distinct." Today everyone has an opportunity with social media to strengthen and distinguish their personality brand," says Winans. "A brand is the personality behind the name. Defining your personality brand doesn’t end when your show is over. What you do online should reflect your on-air character and strengthen your brand by sending a consistent message to listeners. Make your online presence a focus for 2012. It’s an important part of radio today, and could be considered a strength when your contract is up for renewal. Here are social media tips to take you through all twelve months of 2012 (so no giving up on this resolution after January): January: Define your character in one phrase. (If you’re a Randy Lane Company client, you already have this down.) What adjectives describe you? Are you serious, comical, conservative, hip, edgy, fun? Use these to develop a “tone” for your brand voice. Listeners should get a sense of your personality by the way you write. (While we’re on the subject, read Angela’s article on How to Write Funny if comical is in your character.) February: Set goals for yourself. Do you want to increase your number of Twitter followers, Facebook likes or YouTube subscribers? Are you interested in developing relationships with listeners or others in the radio industry? You can’t measure progress if you don’t know what your personal goals are. March: Choose a social app to help you easily manage various social networks. You’ll be able to manage your own accounts on different platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and manage the station accounts as well from one interface. You can also schedule some of your tweets and posts so your message reaches a larger percentage your audience. Here are a few of my favorite apps: Social Bro
April: Develop a minimum frequency goal and stick to it (permanently). How often will you be tweeting or posting on Facebook? Regardless of your time constraints, setting a frequency goal will ensure your accounts stay active and don’t look stale. May: Share your opinion this month. What’s your take on the topic you’re posting about? Provide the information along with your thoughts on it. Your opinions are part of what make your voice distinct. June: Create organic content by making a hot topic your own. For example, when Scarlett Johansson’s nude pics leaked, Nat from Breakfast with Nat & Drew, Virgin/Vancouver, took her own Johanssoning picture. Instead of her butt in the mirror, though, it was a donkey (still an ass!). This was a fantastic way to put a personal touch on a hot topic. July: Share what you’re passionate about this month. Love cooking? Make a video of yourself preparing your favorite recipe, and share it with listeners via your social networks and station website. August: Be self deprecating. Find a way this month to showcase your endearing flaws online the way you do on-air. If you’re known for having great hair, share a picture of the oh-so-rare bad hair day. September: Give listeners a peek into what you’re up to off the air. Use pictures and videos to show what’s going on behind the scenes. October: Network with others in the radio industry. LinkedIn and Twitter are great for finding people you would like to meet, or reaching out to someone for the first time. Building relationships within the industry is important because you never know when that person could be your next co-host, PD or GM. November: Use social media for show prep. Following shows you admire can be the catalyst for brainstorming on topics, features and contests. With Twitter, you can favorite tweets and look back at them when you have time. December: Focus on your listeners. Talk with them, not at them. Developing meaningful relationships with listeners can convert them into brand ambassadors, and give you a sense of what listeners like and don’t like about your show. Just a reminder: All content should support the brand essence of your show and station, as well. In fact, ratings in the mornings among 25-to-54 year olds, slipped from October to December, falling from 11th to 15th, according to Arbitron. And mornings remained the River’s weakest time slot." Stern Edges Out Seacrest In Best Face For Radio Contest, But TV?
There She Is: Former Miss North Carolina, Monica Palumbo, Officially Joins Ace & TJ Show As Co-Host THE MOUTH, JANUARY 3RD, 2012 –– The Ace & TJ Show announced this morning that Monica Palumbo (pleasantly shown at right) will be joining the show as a co-host. Monica has been filling in on the show since May while she continued her fourth year as Miss Sprint Cup on the NASCAR circuit. Monica is a Charlotte NC native and brings over 10 years of broadcast experience to the Ace & TJ Show in both TV and film. She began her career when she won the title of Miss North Carolina USA in 2001 and during the Miss USA Pageant she was awarded Miss Congeniality. It coincided with the home movie release of ‘Miss Congeniality’ and Warner Brothers hired Monica to promote it. After three years in California and performing in the ABC show ‘All American Girl’, Monica decided to move back home and attain a career in NASCAR. She is also the host of a new TV series that just hit the airways on Direct TV called ‘Fastlane for Fun’ …showcasing what NASCAR drivers do on their days off. Ace told Jockline Daily, “We are very excited to have found someone willing to work for what we’re willing to pay. We should be ashamed.” TJ added, “We were so fortunate to be able to find somebody as talented, sweet, and driven as Monica. It’s just a shame that she’s not much to look at.”
Sabo Unlinked With Merlin Media THE MOUTH, JANUARY 3RD, 2012 –– Among the many wonders of social media is getting tipped to changing employment status. This was the case just before the end of 2011 on Linkedin where Sabo Media's Walter Sabo listed Merlin Media as his employer from May 2011 to December 2011. He also placed his Merlin position is in the “past” category there as well. As you'll recall, with the launch of Merlin Media's much publicized purchase of stations in New York and Chicago and their conversion to News/Talk, Sabo's appointment as COO led many to believe his highly successful history with live and local programming at stations such as Jersey 101.5 would lend itself to a similar approach at these outlets. Now, some 8 months after joining Merlin, it appears his job there is done. Of note, Sabo's never relinquished his management of Hitviews or Sabo Media and will now continue in those operations.
Furman & Artrell Hawkins Kick Of New Fox Sports Radio Morning Drive Show THE MOUTH, JANUARY 3RD, 2012 –– Veteran Cincinnati sports talk personality Andy Furman will host the network’s new 6 - 9 a.m. ET/3 - 6 a.m. PT program FOX Sports Daybreak with former NFL defensive back Artrell Hawkins, beginning today. Furman has been a fixture on the network for more than a year as host of a weekend show with former NFL All-Pro Lincoln Kennedy, in addition to filling in during various timeslots and day-parts. He will continue to host his Sunday evening program with Kennedy, which airs from 7 - 10 p.m. ET/4 - 7 p.m. PT.Furman, a native of Brooklyn, New York, has been a strong voice in the world of sports talk radio for more than 20 years, with much of that time spent in Cincinnati. He hosted “Sports Talk” on WLW-AM for 18 years, and was named the “number one sports talker” in Ohio by Ohio Magazine. Most recently, Furman hosted an afternoon drive show on “Real Talk 1160” WQRT in Cincinnati. Hawkins also spent much of his career in Cincinnati, where he played college football at the University of Cincinnati and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 1998 NFL Draft. While in the NFL, he played cornerback and safety for the Bengals, Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots.
Electrical Fire Knocks WIOO Off The Air; Home of Robin Quivers Career Launch THE MOUTH, JANUARY 3RD, 2012 –– Carlisle PA's WIOO started out the new year in a blaze, but surely not the kind they wanted. Morning host Craig Senior told penn.live “ the recovery will occur in stages. First, he said the station must find a temporary home for its studios, determine how much of the existing equipment needs to be replaced and then tie it all back in with the off-site transmitters, which were not affected by the blaze ... What's not known at the time is how much of the digitized music library was destroyed, though it appears much of the station’s compact disc and record library has survived,” Senior said. Of note, "WIOO is where Howard Stern sidekick Robin Quivers, got her start in 1979.”

WIRED GETS ALL TINGLY: Former Q101 Chicago Co-Host Joins Chio In The Morning THE MOUTH, JANUARY 2ND 2012 –– Former Q101/Chicago's Steve Tingle, one half of the Sherman and Tingle Show, is headed to WRDW-FM/Philly where he'll join the cast of Chio & Shila in the morning. According to Robert Feder's 'Time Out Chicago, the team had been off the air since last summer and hoped for a new home together. Sherman posted on his webpage: “We have exhausted all of our connections, agents and places to find work as a team ... Tingle and I as a show are no more.” Contrary to news that Tingle was headed to WRDW as a solo morning host, sources tell Jockline Daily he'll actually be joining as an extra cast member beginning January 23rd. Brian Sherman and Steve Tingle took over the mornings at Q101 back in 2008 after Alan Cox and Jim Lynam’s “The Morning Fix” exited.
Krenn Not Returning To WDVE Mornings; Remains With Station In New Role THE MOUTH, JANUARY 2ND 2012 –– Longtime WDVE morning co-host Jim Krenn is still employed with the station, but when the show returns this week to the air only players Randy Baumann, Val Porter and Mike Prisuta will handle mornings. Also gone is the show's moniker "Jim & Randy." According to The Post Gazette, Jim Krenn will no longer be on air with the WDVE Morning Show, said Dennis Lamme, president and market manager of Clear Channel Media & Entertainment-Pittsburgh. But Krenn remains an employee of WDVE and Clear Channel. Lamme told The Post Gazette: "We are currently in discussion with Jim about his role with the station moving forward." Krenn has been off the air since Dec. 6. and tongues began to over his absence and some wondered if it was just an extended holiday vacation. However, once his name disappeared from the show and website many began to think otherwise.

Howard And Beth Spend New Years Eve Drunk Dialing Fans THE MOUTH, JANUARY 2ND 2012 –– So what do you do when you're bored with the holidays an itchin' to get back to work? Apparently for Howard Stern you begin 'drunk dialing' fans. According to tweetcenter.com, Stern and his wife Beth Ostrosky Stern (shown left) reached out via Twitter posting “Beth and I are drunk dialing. What’s your phone number.” As luck would have it the first person he reached was Bryan Srabian, director of Social Media for the San Francisco Giants. Stern told him he was the first person to tweet back to him. Bryan wrote: 'Didn’t think he would call, was not prepared at all, it was about 90 seconds – If this doesn’t prove the power of Social Media, then nothing does – Just blown away.” MSNBC reported In most cases, he didn't reach the person, but tweeted that he left them a voicemail message. On last Friday's Nick Cannon Show on 92.3/New York, he and co-host Sarah Lee Owensby were talkin' Jersey Shore's Snooki and supposedly implied “you can get mono and herpes from Snooki’s dirty sheets.” The buxom actress was tuned in and apparently none too happy with the diss and quickly tweeted: that the hosts are “mean assholes” and that 92.3 NOW is no longer “her favorite radio station.” Show member Ben Harvey shot back "So @nickcannon and @sarahleegetit may have implied you can get mono and herpes from @snooki's dirty sheets.
