'I Missed You:' Rich Shertenlieb Returning To Mornings In Boston On iHeart's 100.7 WZLX

THE MOUTH, MAY 7TH, 2024 - After his much publicized decision last November to exit from Boston's extremely popular Toucher & Rich Show on Beasley's 98.5 The Sports Hub. Rich Shertenlieb yesterday announced he'll soon be hosting “The Rich Shertenlieb Show” on Classic Rock 100.7 WZLX. With the heading: 'Hey Boston, I Missed You!, he posted on social: “Hey Boston, it’s Rich Shertenlieb and boy does it feel good to talk to you again because I have missed the living hell out of you,” he said in a message on the station Monday. “And it feels even better to finally announce that coming soon, The Rich Shertenlieb Show will be debuting right here on Boston’s Classic Rock 100.7 WZLX."

The news followed an earlier report that WZLX's lontime hosts Pete McKenzie and Heather Ford were leaving. The duo had helmed the morning show several months after co-host Kevin Karlson died unexpectedly. In a recorded on-air message, the station announced: "First and foremost, we'd like to thank Pete McKenzie and Heather Ford for all the laughter, wild stories, and fun moments they have brought to Boston morning radio over the years. We truly appreciate them. With that said, we have decided to close that chapter of WZLX."

The station later announced it was launching “The Rich Shertenlieb Show” in mornings. The show’s co-hosts will be revealed over the next couple of days. “After careful consideration, it was our decision to bring you, the loyal WZLX listener, a new show to take us into the future,” the station’s message stated. “We will debut this new show soon. Stay tuned to WZLX for more details today.”

Shertenlieb left Beasley's 98.5 The Sport's Hub morning show in November after a longtime run with Fred Toucher. In Shertenlieb’s announcement on social media, he wrote that “non-competes are the worst and should be totally illegal.” We're told the rest of Shertenlieb's cast members will be announced in the coming days.

Public Radio Techsurvey 2024 Station Registration Is Now Open

THE MOUTH, MAY 7TH, 2024 - Jacobs Media and Public Media Content Collective (PMCC) are proud to announce the opening of station registration for Public Radio Techsurvey 2024 (PRTS) with its new partner, National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB), on board for the first time in this 16th annual iteration. PRTS 2024 will provide fresh data on alternative ways consumers are using your station – smart speakers, mobile apps, the connected car, podcasting – all sectors that hold the key to radio’s future. This year’s study will also freshly delve into public radio shows and personalities to gain a sense of their relevance and popularity.

In addition, PRTS 2024 will explore how public radio’s news image and reputation, along with its levels of trust and transparency, are holding up post-pandemic. There will once more be a focus on “local,” and the importance listeners place on public radio’s role in providing local news and community information. Public radio’s fundraising efforts will also continue to be a focus with an eye towards what can be done to make fund drives more “listenable.” This year’s study will also again dive into, and track last year’s data on, Artificial Intelligence (AI) – ChatGPT, deepfakes, etc. – and how public radio listeners perceive its personal and societal impact.

“There’s no question public radio is at an inflection point facing myriad challenges at this time,” notes Fred Jacobs, president of Jacobs Media. “P1 listening in most markets has fallen off, with PRTS 2024 the perfect opportunity to answer key questions about changing needs in a contentious election year when both news and music-formatted stations can deliver a great service. We are excited to work with PMCC and NFCB to provide research guidance with our 16th annual study.”

For more information on how public radio stations can participate and register, please visit https://jacobsmedia.com/register-prts2024/ . The deadline for registration is Thursday, June 6th. Please reserve your spot now.

Cumulus Reports Q1 2024 Operating Results; Completes Successful Debt Exchange

THE MOUTH, MAY 3RD, 2024 - Cumulus Media today announced operating results for the three months ended March 31, 2024. Mary G. Berner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cumulus Media, said, “We are thrilled to have refinanced our capital structure to secure five-year maturities with favorable terms through a successful debt exchange and ABL Facility upsize and extension. This is an excellent outcome for the Company especially given the generally difficult financing environment for legacy media companies. Specifically, we extended maturities to 2029, reduced the principal amount of outstanding debt by approximately $33 million, obtained attractive interest rates, maintained a structure free of financial maintenance covenants, and increased capacity on our ABL Facility by 25%.”

Berner continued, “The importance of these transactions is underscored by the continuing choppiness in the macroeconomic environment. While our Q1 revenue was in line with guidance and a marked improvement from 2023 trends, it is also reflective of the uncertainty that continues to weigh on advertisers. With the advertising environment still unsettled, these new terms provide us additional time and flexibility to execute against our key business priorities - accelerating digital growth, reducing fixed costs, and continuing to de-lever our balance sheet - each of which is foundational to our ability to build long-term shareholder value." Edison: One Key Difference On Where Heavy And Light Listeners Spend Time Listening To Audio

THE MOUTH, MAY 2ND, 2024 - Edison Research’s Share of Ear® study answers this question by having respondents nationwide complete a detailed one-day audio listening diary. This diary details what they listen to, where they listen, what device they listen on, and for how long. While on average respondents spend about four hours per day listening to all forms of audio, some spend hours and hours with audio sources while others spend little to no time at all.

This week’s insight explores the audio habits of Americans at both ends of the listening-frequency spectrum. Heavy listeners are those who spend four or more hours per day with audio Light listeners are people who spend one hour or less with audio each day One key difference between heavy and light listeners is where they spend time listening to audio in a typical day.

As you might imagine, heavy listeners infuse audio sources into all parts of their day in a number of different locations. They spend the most time with audio at home (59%), followed by in a car/truck (21%), then work (16%). A small fraction of their time (4%) is spent listening in other places. We see a completely different story when we observe where light listeners spend their time with audio.

The car is key to reaching this audience, since light listeners spend the majority (60%) of their audio time listening in a car or truck. In fact, most light listeners (52% of them) only listen to audio in a car or truck. While some light listeners do listen in other locations, these people can be characterized largely as those who mostly just interact with audio while driving.

Additional information, such as the demographic composition of each of these audience segments, is available to Share of Ear subscribers. Visit the Edison Research website to find out how to become a Share of Ear subscriber.

Scott Greenstein: 'You Never Want To Be A Company Without Howard'

THE MOUTH, MAY 1ST, 2024 -SiriusXM reported on Tuesday that advertising revenue rose 7 percent to $402 million, despite being offset by subscription revenue falling. They reported it lost 359,000 self-pay subscribers in its satellite radio unit in the first quarter. The decline from a year-earlier loss of 347,000 self-pay subs resulted from dfewer trial starts in late 2023 and higher first-quarter churn.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paid promotional subscribers during the latest quarter fell by 86,000 customers, compared to a gain of 66,000 subscribers in the category last year. This added up to an overall first-quarter subscriber drop of 445,000, compared with 281,000 in the same quarter of 2023.

SiriusXM, led by CEO Jennifer Witz, also reported self-pay subscribers of its Pandora Plus and Pandora Premium services fell by 64,000 during the first quarter, compared to a year-earlier loss of 7,000 subscribers. During a morning analyst call, Witz conceded the launch of the new SiriusXM streaming app for some longtime customers had been “disruptive,” but added innovation to reach younger subscribers beyond cars was growing. “Our early engagement metrics and other consumer signals we are following from the new SiriusXM app are improving."

Scott Greenstein, president and chief content officer of SiriusXM Radio, talked about his company possibly having to replace Howard Stern should the “King of All Media” retire and not renew his long-standing deal when it comes up for renewal next year. “You never want to be a company without Howard and if he decides to retire, or do whatever he does, then that’s his choice,” he told analysts. In 2020, Stern last extended his deal with the company for his flagship show by five years. “You don’t replace someone, you come up with a strategy of what is your current demo and your target audience and you look at what would be best suited for that at any given time. And we love our bench,” Greenstein added about a potential post-Howard Stern world for SiriusXM radio. Stern as SiriusXM’s most valuable creative asset is not only key to retaining subscribers, but also holding onto and attracting top talent to the satellite radio and streaming service.

Brand Manager Jonathan 'J' Steele added, "Industry professionals will tell you that R&B music won't work in a market like Phoenix. The reimagined Power is changing that narrative. All your favorite Hip-Hop that you heard Power play first is back, plus, with more R&B music that isn't being heard in the market. This is the most exciting radio station in the Valley! Big thank you to Jeff Trumper and our secret weapon team for believing in my vision and letting me cook!"

Longtime New York Radio & TV Voice Tony Pigg Passes Away

By Art Vuolo

THE MOUTH, APRIL 30TH, 2024 - Another well-known radio personality is gone with the sudden passing last Friday (4-26) of Tony Pigg. Pigg was 85. According to SiriusXM’s Pat St. John, a longtime coworker, “Pigg was the seasoned voice of Live with Regis & Kathy Lee has passed away. Tony, whose real name was Richard Quinn, had been a part of that show since 2001 when Regis first joined, provided announcer duties for several decades.”

“The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Tony is how we laughed so hard our sides split. He was so funny. It was a very special connection," said St. John. "As a jock, he was genuine and unaffected, nothing insincere or artificial about him, the same way he was when off the air. I loved him so much.”

Jim Kerr, who recently celebrated 50 years on New York City radio said “the warmth and wit of Tony Pigg entertained an entire generation of New York radio listeners. His talent was a major reason why in the 1970's, WPLJ became the most listened to FM station in America and is so fondly remembered today. Tony loved his audience. At the end of each show he delivered his signature line "Nothing but thanks" and he meant it.” Longtime friend and colleague, Maria Milito of WAXQ (Q-104.3) who remembers him from WXRK (K-Rock 92.3) said “I was shocked and saddened to hear that one of the NYC Radio greats, Tony Pigg, had passed away. Tony was funny, charming, sarcastic but most of all a very good friend. He ended his show with “nothing but thanks” but today, for all of us, Nothing but Thanks to you, Tony Pigg for being in our lives. Rest easy my friend.”

KKFR-FM Phoenix Working 'To Reimagine Power Brand'

s

THE MOUTH, APRIL 29TH, 2024 - As shown by a ticking clock above (from about 7:00 am est) at its website, Power 98.3 Phoenix will be unveiling a 'reimagined Power brand. In a staff memo, Jeff Trumper, Pres. & CEO of Desert Valley Media Group wrote: "As we work to reimagine the POWER brand, a more specific email regarding POWER is forthcoming and will lay out this reimagined brand to all.

dIn his memo, Trumper said, "It is with great sadness that I announce the departure of Dana Cortez, Automatic and Anthony, from the POWER morning show, effective (today) 4/29. DCS began their time here at DVMG almost five years ago. We will miss their professionalism, talent, work ethic, charisma, engagement, humor, and client friendliness. Please join me in wishing DCS the very best as DVMG and DCS move in new directions and journeys separately. On behalf of a grateful DVMG staff, I'd like to thank DCS for their support and engagement for these many years." Tracy Johnson: Not Knowing Who You're Talking With On The Air 'Drives Listeners Crazy'

THE MOUTH, APRIL 29TH, 2024 - In Talent Coach Tracy Johnson's latest blog, he weighs in on a common struggle shome host show's have with real-life conversations, particularly in the texting and social media age. Radio personalities frequently would rather be behind a microphone than in a discussion with others in real life because they don’t have to deal with human beings. However, mastering the art of conversations is a vital skill for air talents who wish to become personalities and not just announcers or “broadcasters.”

On the one hand, listeners are eavesdropping on a private conversation between hosts and cohosts. They tune in to hear what the personalities have to say. On the other hand, listeners aren’t involved in the conversation, yet the show must perform with that eavesdropper as the priority. This defies typical social cues we have learned since a young age.

Johnson says, "It’s hard to feel connected to someone if you don’t know their name and can’t identify who’s talking. It drives listeners crazy. Radio folks assume listeners know them, and some managers think listeners don’t care. That may be true for generic announcers but not for personalities. Listeners can’t follow the conversation between three or more personalities. It works in real life because there’s visual contact, but (again) your audience is blind." Read complete blog here

Tech Survey 2024: Personalities Edge Music Again As Main Reason For Listening; Skepticism Of AI

THE MOUTH, APRIL 26TH, 2024 - In yesterday's much anticipated Jacobs Media's annual Techsurvey 2024 presented in partnership with Inside Radio and sponsored by Quu, it revealed that Broadcast radio has its challenges, but the medium is showing stability and resilience. Other key takeaways show that key reasons for radio listening erosion continue to be less time in cars & lifestyle changes, but other audio options emerges as the primary obstacle. That said, Broadcast radio’s “connectivity” and “local-ness” set it apart from podcasts, DSPs, and personal music collections. And both rise in importance again this year. Other highlights include:

For 6 years, personalities continue to outrank music for station preference, and a new question series reveals a majority of fans desire a deeper connection with station hosts. ----- Even fans of radio grossly underestimate the percentage of American that listen to AM/FM stations each week.

Other takeaways show that “Regular radios” continue to disappear in homes, but thankfully, P1 mobile apps and smart speaker ownership are becoming more prominent. ----- Most radio listening among Millennials and Gen Zs takes place in cars.----- The social media hierarchy is mostly stable, but Twitter/X has incurred losses YoY.

With regard to AI, the study showed a high-level of alarm over its rapid growth and most are highly concerned about its influence on the 2024 elections. Similar to the results in Techsurveys for public and Christian music radio, core radio listeners are both highly skeptical and fearful of AI. They are especially against the idea of bots replacing human hosts.

Commenting on this year's key takeaway for radio, Fred Jacobs says, "If I were working at a radio station, whether in Nome or New York City, I'd be embracing my local market. It continues to be something that only broadcast radio can do (of the audio options)." Asked if there were there any surprises, Jacobs added, "Probably by how many traveled 200+ miles (one way) to see a favorite artist in concert. Had we asked, I wonder how many would have told us it was Taylor Swift!"

Edison: In The Digital Age, Social Media Platforms Influence Music Discovery And Beyond

THE MOUTH, APRIL 25TH, 2024 - In Edison's latest Weekly Insights it refers to the latest findings from The Infinite Dial 2024, supported by Audacy, Cumulus Media, and SiriusXM Media. It shows how platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are also sources for discovering music. Social media platforms are embedded into the lives of the majority of Americans 12+. Sixty-three percent of Americans use Facebook, 44% use Instagram, and usage of TikTok is close behind at 35%. Yet the power of these platforms is not just measured by usage — it’s also about influence.

According to The Infinite Dial 2024, 48% of Americans age 12+ say it is “very” or “somewhat” important to keep up to date with music. Among this audience, 40% use Instagram as a source to find out about music. TikTok trails behind at 36%, while Facebook maintains a solid presence with 32% of Americans using it for discovering music. So, what makes these platforms so distinguishable in the realm of music discovery? It's the immersive experience they offer.

Kevin is joined on-air by co-hosts Virginia Sinicki and Jason Pennington (shown L-R). Named in honor of the late Kidd Kraddick, the annual award recognizes those of unparalleled success, inimitable style and authenticity. exemplary service to their community and serving as a constant source of inspiration to other shows and personalities.

dTraditionally, each year's recipient is charged with selecting the following year's honoree. Last year's recipient, Dave Ryan (R) of iHeart's KDWB-FM Minneapolis, said in selecting Rolston, "The responsibility of choosing the next Kidd Kraddick Award winner is the hardest part of winning this award. So many amazing radio people went through my head like characters on a slot machine! But I owed Kevin for helping me hide that body at Boot Camp 2014 so I knew he was the one."

Ryan adds, "Seriously, Kevin is amazing on two important fronts. Of course he's an incredible radio talent. His content is different and fun and innovative and absolutely compelling. He never plays it safe and it pays off. On top of dthat, he's a visionary. He sees where the industry is going and how to get his show on that same path. If you want to know where to point your show in 2024, follow Kevin. He gets it. I get such a kick out of knowing I had anything to do with Kevin's career and I'm honored to pass this award on to that college student that used to listen to my show back in the day."

On being named as this year's recipient Kevin says, "There isn't an honor I would cherish more. I believe Kidd Kraddick was the most gifted person to ever crack a microphone in our industry. Everyone to have received his award is an industry giant. I don't feel worthy, but I'm not gonna turn this down either! And to receive this award from Dave Ryan is such a cool full-circle moment for me."

"Dave Ryan is the sole reason I'm even in radio in the first place," Kevin added, "Hearing him on the Morning Zoo at WNCI in Columbus as a young impressionable kid at Ohio University who couldn't pick a career path, inspired me and gave me the idea that maybe I could do this too. I wanted to be him so bad. Kind of weird where life takes you."

Past honorees include Bert Weiss of the syndicated 'The Bert Show,' The YEA Network Syndicated 'The Kidd Kraddick Show, The Ace & TJ Show, 97X Quad Cities' Dwyer & Michaels Show, Big 105.9 Miami's Paul Castronovo, BJ Shea, co-host of The BJ & Sarah Mornings on KZOK-FM Seattle, The Roula & Ryan Show, on KRBE-FM Houston, Brother Wease Radio 95.1 Rochester, Mojo of Channel 955 Detroit's Mojo in the Morning and, of course, Dave Ryan.

STUDY: Telecommunications Among Most Impacted Industries By Technology in 2024

S

THE MOUTH, JANUARY 2ND, 2024 - “The Impact of Technology in 2024 and Beyond,” found AI as the technology most likely to have the greatest impact on a broad range of industries from film to medicine. The Impact of Technology in 2024 and Beyond: AN IEEE global study (IEEE) Extended reality, cloud computing, 5G and electric vehicles are also among the top five most important technologies in 2024, according to the IEEE. The survey of CTOS (Global Tech. Officers) from the US, UK, China, India and Brazil found AI to be the most impactful technology next year, encompassing predictive and generative AI, machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP).

Telecommunications, Manufacturing, Financial Industries Most impacted by Technology in 2024- The top five industry sectors that will be most impacted by technology in 2024, according to survey responses, are:

  • (41%) telecommunications (as compared to 40% in 2023)

  • (39%) manufacturing (as compared to 30% in 2023)

  • (39%) banking and financial services (as compared to 33% in 2023)

  • (31%) automotive and transportation (as compared to 39% in 2023)

  • (31%) energy (as compared to 33% in 2023)

According to the survey, among the top uses of AI in the coming year will be real-time cybersecurity, increasing supply chain efficiency, aiding and accelerating software development, automating customer service, and the speeding up screening of job applicants. However, integrating AI into existing work isn’t as straightforward as flipping a switch. In the study, nearly half of respondents said they see difficulty integrating AI into existing workflows as one of the top three concerns when it comes to using generative AI in 2024.

The benefit of AI is clear to many, but there’s a tricky part: potential risks. Among them is the risk of overreliance on generative AI for facts. As the IEEE puts it, the problem is that those facts aren’t always accurate. And with all forms of AI, it can be difficult to find out how, exactly, the software arrived at its conclusion. In the survey, 59% of respondents cited an “overreliance on AI and potential inaccuracies” as a top concern of AI use in their organizations. Part of the problem is that the training data itself can be inaccurate. “Verifying training data is difficult because the provenance is not available and volume of the training data is enormous,” said IEEE life fellow Paul Nikolic. In 2024 and beyond, expect intense efforts to ensure that AI results are more accurate, and the data used to train AI models is clean. Read Full Report Here
